Looking forward to trying this place for so long. I figured tonight would be the night seeing as though I was really craving a good burger and the community pages always mention this place. I should note that if you are handicapped, the tables are not spaced appropriately to be handicap accessible. The first thing I noticed was how small the menu was and their prices. $16 for a burger, $22 if you want fries with it. This isn't a fancy place people, you're sitting on a picnic table! If you don't want a burger you could also get tacos and corn salad which is also on the menu...interesting... I digress... I was not impressed at all with the burger. Incredibly greasy (had to put a napkin underneath to catch the grease), salty, and just not good. I was unable to finish my food. To make things worse I was sick within minutes of leaving the restaurant and had to cancel my plans for the evening. I do not recommend the food here. For drinks and a dog friendly patio, maybe...but take your money elsewhere and get a good meal at one of the many walkable restaurants nearby. read more

I was going on a date to another spot when I realized the other spot didn't serve dinner. So I quickly googled restaurants in the area. That's how I found The Moonlighter. As a person who doesn't live in the area, I was pleased with how easy it was to find and get in with no reservation. It's the best of both worlds: The restaurant with the sports bar feel. It's appropriate for a casual date, to hang with the fellas for drinks and a game, or to bring the kids. Zero stars for sure, ordered take out from here as we live 4 steps away. We all violently had food poisoning, my kids included. Had dinner around 6 and I definitely started feeling it right away. Ordered takeout from here tonight, but once I walked in to retrieve my order, I was amazed at how cozy the interior looked. Now that the colder months are upon us, a bar and grill with fireplaces, wall mounted TVs, and a piña colada machine are in the mix, this might be one of those spots to hunker down in on any given day. So I got one of their double cheeseburgers which was filling enough on its own without any sides. Good deal too for less than $15 in my opinion. The patties were thick, and the burger itself was covered in sauce, but not too much where it would become a huge mess. Also had some carrot cake, which is apparently brought in by the ever so famous Roeser's Bakery down on North Ave. Delicious, but I don't have to tell you that. So the meal was pretty good, but I'm looking to visit next time and have something else from Moonlighter indoors. Looks too comfy to pass up a good meal on, and that's a fact. read more

Large patio space that's dog friendly and tons of space between tables. The menu during Covid was small but, they have a pretty tasty double burger, decent beer list and Rosè on draft. We came here on a football Sunday while you could still dine in. My friend had made a reservation in advance as there was limited capacity. I ordered the burger and it was fantastic! I was really surprised here! They have some good food. I came with a friend on a Saturday night and we both ended up with 2 beers, 2 tacos, and we split a burger. I am very impressed with their tacos. I freakin love that they are deep fried!! The shell is amazing. I was also really impressed with their burger. We got the one with bbq sauce and fried onions. It was really well seasoned and the bun was awesome. The price was decent, especially for the tacos ($2 each) and the service was friendly and prompt. The only reason this is 4 instead of 5 stars is that they seem to think American cheese is the only kind of cheese. It really ruins the taco, and the second one I had (sans cheese) was 1000 times better. I really with they would use shredded cheddar. The burger had American too, and for what tasted like a fairly artisan burger was really leveled down with such a cheap, plasticy cheese. The fries were good but i wasn't sure how I felt about the beer cheese.. the texture was off to my liking. But good. COVID stuff - Plenty of indoor and outdoor patio space. I got here around 6 pm on a Sunday and was immediately seated without any reservation (this was my backup - because scofflaw was closed). However, it gets packed during the evening time so do call ahead. Staff wears a mask and it's mandatory for you to wear one upon entering as well..but that's kinda obvious. Drinks/food- I had the guilty pleasure cocktail and tried the sunsetter & go-getter. Guilty pleasure was quite tasty ( I was on an empty stomach so one already got me feeling good), it had a nice tang to it with the lemon, could've been stronger on the passionfruit. Sunsetter was alright, Go-getter had the nice smoky mezcal flavor to it. Honestly, the only letdown was the cocktail glass (if I'm not wrong, it came in a plastic one..maybe a COVID safety thing?). It could've been different but they did put a cute umbrella on mine so that was cute compensation. I also tried the charred spicy Brussel sprouts..it wasn't spicy and I liked it. Probably one of the best vegetarian patties I have had. If you don't want vegan or vegetarian, I would try the Moonlighter (American cheese, iceberg, grilled onion, pickle, tomato, sauce). Simple, but it hits the spot. Sides are à la carte here. So pubby: fries, garlic fries, chili cheese fries, cheese curds, chicken strips, wings, mac and cheese, nachos. I followed majority of Yelpers and ordered a pina colada. So refreshing that I ordered another. Our server seemed a little off and disconnected from us. Our electric skateboarding group has been patronizing Moonlighter for years & usually spends between $300 & $400 per trip multiple times a month. We had no issues with staff ever until the new GM Katie took over. She was extremely rude from the start & made insulting comments about skaters being degenerates. She then berated one of us for asking to use the bathroom & proceeded to throw us out. We were nothing but respectful the entire time but she was completely unreasonable & incredibly rude. We will never patronize Moonlighter again & will advise all the other motorcycle, car, & bicycle riding groups in the city to do the same. read more

Love this place. I live down the street and this is our go-to when we want to get out of the house and have some great food but we don't want to travel too far. We made a reservation and visited on a Saturday night around 9pm. It was packed and we sat on the patio. The patio is a nice space and has tvs and lights. I ordered an Off Color beer and the Double Cheese Burger with fries. The cheeseburger was very good with a very very subtle "special sauce". The fries were good and you got plenty. It was a bit disappointing that you have to add fries to the burger for $5 though. The only other negatives were that the patio was really loud with music + tv audio + talking and our server came by twice the whole time we were there. I've been here a handful of times and I've enjoyed every visit. In the winter, when the patio is closed, it can sometimes be crowded inside but we have always been able to get seats at the bar right away. The patio outside in the warmer months is gorgeous. There's plenty of seating, nice lighting, and comfortable chairs. It's a great place to just sit and enjoy the weather with a nice drink and some good food. I'm also always impressed with their mocktail menu. I quit drinking awhile back and I always appreciate a nod to the non-imbibers that's not just soda and a lime. They had great juices, mocktails, and a number of sodas and zero alcohol beers. Great job, Moonlighter. I also love that they have a vegetarian/vegan version of their menu. I appreciate that the same foods are made veggie/vegan instead of having a totally different set of meals. I love veggie versions of things like nachos and burgers even though I'm not a vegetarian. Plenty of parking on Kedzie and Armitage and, even though it often looks full and busy, it's usually easy to get a table. Service is always good and quick, especially if you want a drink refill. I've always enjoyed my meals here and I'll be back to enjoy the patio this summer. read more

The burgers appeared to be the specialty here, so I ordered their Coronado burger (pepper jack cheese, guac, pickled jalapeno, and spicy mayo). My favorite part about the burger was how fresh the guacamole tasted. The Moonlighter carries a large selection of sour beers. I've never been a huge fan of this category of beers, but they definitely had a lot of sour beers that sounded interesting. To drink, I had the "Surprise Horizon" cocktail and a glass of rose. Both drinks were excellent, but I did find it a little weird to drink wine out of a water glass vs. a normal wine glass. They serve all of their beers, cocktails, and wine out of the same type of glass. We ordered vegan wings in a to-go order. I tipped $12 in cash on a $55 on that order. We get home and they are real chicken wings. I call. They will not refund for the wings, or deliver. All I wanted as a refund. NO. Never again. It's sad how much money we have spent there, and how much we will never spend again. It's ridiculous they will not refund us for just the wings. They went straight into the garbage. Don't offer vegan options if you are not going to follow through. read more
