A classic of long standing in Missoula. They appear not to have raised their prices over the course of several presidential administrations. Combine this with the absence of sales tax in Montana and you can eat very reasonably here. It doesn't hit you over the head with the fact that it's an old place, but the sign appears to have been designed before the world wars, and the pressed tin ceiling might be on its third century. There's shiplap under that, high on the wall, that doesn't look a heck of a lot newer. The barback is certainly antique. The beer signs are new--they appear to have been hand-colored with Crayolas by the staff during slow moments in service. Trust me, they're a lot cooler-looking than that description might lead you to believe. The booths are hammered together from rough-hewn cedar. There's a big newer deck outside, made private by arbors and trellises. The whole thing obviously has grown through decades of affectionate patronage by locals and tourists alike. The staff is all right on point, very friendly and at ease, completely in command of everything the place has on the menu and in the bar. The chicken wing specials are delicious, and a steal at $0.25 a wing. The spicy andouille sausage sandwich was toasty with great flavor from the horseradish spread as well as a nicely spiced link. The posole was startlingly good, and the pretzel was a really good effort with decent beer cheese dip. On my way out of town, I grabbed breakfast. OK coffee, great service again, and a tasty scramble. The bread was clearly out of a supermarket-type bag, but had great flavor, and the scramble itself was delicious. The jalapenos added nice counterpoint. I'd definitely hit this place again. read more

The Old Post is an excellent choice for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu is extremely large so regardless of what you're craving, there's a good chance they'll be able to provide you with plenty of options. I've never had a bad meal here. The new remodel ads some light and it feels slightly roomier. The service, however, has remained unchanged from the "Slow Post" of the past. When we arrived, we were one of four tables, none with more than two people (so 8 customers total, including us). We saw two bartenders, two waitresses and several people in the kitchen. Staff definitely outnumbered customers. We sat for about fifteen minutes before we were approached by staff. We placed our drink order and, when the drinks arrived, one was ok (not the best, but nothing to complain about). The other was very definitely a short pour. The menu is typical upscale pub fare. Definitely different than the old menu and prices are quite a bit higher. We will probably try it out again in the future, but I feel like that visit will determine if we'll be back. read more

Burger - very good. Hush puppies good but the sauce is fantastic. Fish tacos also really good. The only thing keeping it from being 5 stars is the brussel sprouts, its like they poured sugar all over them and roasted them. Sickly sweet. Food mediocre, mostly fish and seafood menu that not that prepared well. Worst customer service from the people that answer the phones and wait your tables. They act like Gods gift to you for taking your order. I didn't want to go there so we used ubereats and after we place the order I called and asked what drinks they have that they can deliver and the girl said rudely "I don't know, coke I guess, do it through Uber" and hung up. Gave them a second chance tonight and they told us 30 minutes then it changed to 45 minutes then it changed to one hour and then it just changed to an hour and 10 minutes. Stopped by for lunch on 4th of July - the staff was friendly and good service, despite the holiday and busy crowd. The food was amazing - we enjoyed every bite of the sweet/spicy/salty caramel sweet potato fries, and the buttermilk chicken was tender and perfectly fried, with a light, crispy coating. The biscuit that came with it was flaky, golden brown with sea salt sparkling on top. What can I say? We're only visiting for a week and look forward to going back. read more

I had the Cajun Catfish sandwich with the soup of the day, Andouille and Red Bean Soup - $9.95. (Picture also posted). Being from Louisiana I am usually disappointed in anything that claims to be "cajun" on most menus. But I am in the mood for a fish sandwich and I say why not, lets try it. Delicious!!! The food is made with care and attention to detail. Wonderful white flakey catfish fried crispy with a cornmeal batter that was not too thick (often the problem) A crunchy crisp catfish filet nestled in fresh toasted bread with lettuce tomato and pickles just how it should be. The homemade chipotle mayo and green tabasco (on the table) made me feel like I was back home in Louisiana enjoying a catfish po-boy. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their lunch as well which was a Turkey and Brie Panini with Spinach and garlic mayo and a South West Turkey sandwich. I was terrified by the variety of the menu. Greek, Mexican, American, Asian, who knows what else? But we stuck it out. The drink selection was great, chill atmosphere (a little loud), and the waitress' cute and friendly. We got the nachos for an appetizer. Mistake. They were huge!!! Multiple people could have split them as a meal. I got the spinach feta pie for dinner, and it was very good. Only complaint was that the pita bread that came with it sucked. Dry and stale. I recommend this place for brunch not dinner. I've been here for brunch multiple times and it's been good everytime. Stuffed french toast, biscuits and gravy, and cheese grits. Delicious. However, their dinner was not so great. I had the catfish sandwich. (My first mistake; ordering fish in a state that isn't on the coast) Reading other reviews gave me high hopes that maybe the catfish was alright. NOPE. It was obviously a frozen tasteless filet which was soggy and mushy. The breading was delicious, but the "catfish" itself was horrible. For an $11 sandwich I was really hoping for something great. I came here for my graduation, my birthday, and once in the twelve days in-between the two trips. The sweet potato caramel fries and spinach and artichoke dip are both incredible. The first time I had a meatloaf sandwich and I have also had one of their burgers. The service is great, the menu is not overwhelming because you truly cannot go wrong, and their alcoholic milkshakes are everything you never even knew you needed. I love you Old Post! read more

Last day in Missoula, I tried the Old Post for brunch. A bit bummed we didn't get to sit in the patio area. It was a nice day and I really felt like it would have been perfect. We ordered the Hummus appetizer and I ordered the Surf & Turf Benny. I can honestly say this was a good breakfast for a pub. The Hummus was served on a huge plate edged with Pita bread the size of the plate. It was delicious. On my S&T Benny, the sauce and crab cake were savorous. We hadn't been to The Old Post since the big changes made to staff and menu. We were a bit hesitant to go there for breakfast based on reports from friends and family, but got a gift certificate for Christmas so we gave it a go. The good: coffee, wait staff and parts of our dishes. We both chose the crabcake eggs Benedict and the cakes were ample and tasty. The bad: VERY limited menu (miss the New wave-o), cold and dry grits and Bernaise sauce (a bit bland and without tarragon). I'd give our meal a C+ and will probably return. Hopefully the food will improve and management will bring back more of the favorites. Don't be afraid -try the Post again and support the American Legion! read more

The girl at the front desk admitted that she was a bit biased when she recommended that I come here to eat. She has a few friends that work here. That's alright, though. I figured if I was gonna be eating at a pub, then I best get a big juicy hamburger hot off the grill. It was good. I got a local amber ale to go with the burger. The burger was well seasoned with a big thick patty. Very good. But as far as getting something you can't get anywhere else... this was just good bar & grill food. We came for dinner between first night events. First off, our server was so fun. We loved her! I think her name was Jenna? (Sorry if I got that wrong) I had a Cajun catfish sandwich and fries and was totally satisfied after I added Tabasco. The bread was really nice. The fries were awesome. My table mates started with some amazing looking cheesy fries with bacon and truffle aioli, which they did pronounce amazing. Others were happy with burgers (order medium rare if you want some pink) and fish and chips. Tots were meh, but again, really good fries. Good and generous vodka martini! As a vegetarian, I used to love going to the old post - hummus wrap, veggie burger, and portobello sandwich were great. Just went back unknowing of the menu change and was super disappointed. The only vegetarian option was the vegan burger and it was greasy, "meaty", and just terrible. Would not go back or recommend it to others. In a positive note, they still had good side salads! Different eggs Benedict, cheese grits (all 4 were different, 2 in our group are from the South and did not like how really thick, like wall paper paste, they were) coffee, iced tea and 2 bloody Mary's. Why they get a 2 instead of 3 stars was due to the attitude our server had. Not difficult to keep drinks filled and ask if you would like another Bloody Mary, right? Well, obviously she thought it was too difficult. I wouldn't consider The Old Post to be amazing nor horrible, rather it is the sort of place should enter without expectations. The atmosphere is extremely casual and makes for a great place to meet up with people and enjoy some excellent local brews. They have excellent wings and when its happy hour those wings are what bring in the patrons. I've heard their weekend brunch is fabulous but have yet to experience it myself. This is definitely a hangout for the older undergrad and graduate students. As such you'll often run into someone you know - for better or worse. The tables fill up quickly and if you have a large a group it may take some work and quick maneuvers to snag enough seating for everyone. Nonetheless it can be done. Most people are willing to donate one of their unused chairs to your cause. Sadly I have never experienced good service here. Never, ever be in a rush at The Old Post. I have been there when the place is packed and when it is practically empty and the service quality doesn't change. It can be an effort to flag down a server, even when you're with a group of 8+ people sitting almost next to the bar. Not so great service but the food and brews are good. So having no expectations means you won't be overly disappointed if its not the best bar experience. read more
