Zesty Armenian baked goods; sweets and pastries galore! LIke several Yelpers, I've been coming to Old Sasoon Bakery for some years ever since it opened on this sleepy segment of Allen Street over 20 years ago. I still recall when this place was a drab, flourscent-lit bakery with a cheap sign, old glass windows, and a crotchety-looking, flour-dusted Armenian granny staring out at me from around the oven. Old Sasoon has stood the test of time, and it certainly caters to the sizable Armenian community along the foothills of Pasadena, Glendale, and Monrovia. However, it's neat to see the motley bunch of customers standing in line for lahmejuhne, manaeesh sandwiches, baklava or whatever. Call ahead for large orders, and note that this little hole-in-the-wall only has street parking. Also, no real seating except for some small tables and chairs on the sidewalk outside -- a nice change. Service: Acceptable, but nothing special. This small establishment makes its money on volume sales, so don't expect much chit-chat or friendliness. What you'll get are some good carbohydrate-laden Armenian eats, that's for sure. I can't speak to authenticity of this Armenian food, but it appeals to my palate and that keeps bringing me back! 4 stars for good, simple food. Minus 1 star for high prices relative to what you're getting -- seems expensive for simple flour-based foods. But still good! Yum! read more

So we stopped in front of this bakery because we saw their poster that claims that they have the best baklawa in town ! Waw how exciting !! But unfortunately we were very very disappointed : very dry, there is no taste . it should be the worst one in the town . I've driven by this place a hundred times and finally stopped. Boy am I happy that I did! It is amazing! The zaatar and cheese manakish was delicious and hot. I picked up a little something sweet which I thought was baklava but actually was called shaabiyat. It was seriously the best thing I've tried in a long time. A (special) friend--who's never steered me wrong in terms of food suggestions except once--noted this place to me as the go to spot in Pasadena for Manaeesh. That's the Arabic flatbread/pies/turnovers. He was not wrong here! I called them up in the morning and they agreed to take my catering order (even though they prefer a day in advance but were super understanding considering I had just been given said recommendation). The gentleman that answered was super polite and thorough and took my order for spinach pies, cheese pies and the thyme/olive oil flatbread. Coming from OC, I hit massive traffic on Friday crunch and I called them to let them know I was on my way and would arrive literally at closing and they were unbelievably sweet and kind. They waited for me and I arrived to this adorable quaint LITERAL mom and pop shop, run by this heart melting elderly Arab couple who made me feel like their granddaughter. The bakery smelled phenomenal, just like the ones in Syria, so I knew this was going to be legit. When my party and I took our first bites O M G!!! The freshest softest dough. Delicious lightly salted cheese. Authentic flavor. I am so coming back here for an LA detour to the Middle East because unlike other places, this feels like that little corner hole in the wall I love in Lebanon and Syria. This place falls into the exclusive category of "Places I Can See from My Front Porch", shared only by Old Sasoon Bakery and Soumarelo. Recently I've found myself at OSB more often than Soumarelo, partially because it takes time for Arthur to work his magic at Soumarelo and because Soumarelo is not open for breakfast. OSB opens at 7am. The menu is short, very short; it consists mostly of beoregs, which are sort of like a hot pocket. Soft Armenian bread stuff with various meats and cheeses including the spicy Armenian cured meats of soujouk and batsurma. Other varieties include, mushroom, spinach, olive, ham, chili, and zatar chili. I personally prefer the batsurma and cheese and the spinach. You can get them straight from the case or warm in the oven. They also carry a variety of flatbreads, package to go, as well as a case full of cookies. However with Vrej pastry a few doors down, I'd skip the cookies here and head form Vrej if you are in the mood for something sweet. OSB also does some catering and will cook your holiday turkey for you. Seriously this place is great for a quick breakfast, lunch or snack. If you are in the neighborhood, it's definitely worth the stop. I forgot something and I figure same day is a bit too soon to post a full update. OSB also serves Katchapuri, which is a Georgian/Armenian cheese bread. Essentially, it is a "boat" shaped bread, filled with the Armenian cheese and one or two eggs, and baked. Ta-sty. Back in the 1980's, when I was in middle school down the street, I used to save my lunch money (and not eat lunch) just so I could have some of their Lahmajun - it used to be 50 cents each. Delicious! Far better than those nasty"Taco Snacks" that our school offered. I remember a barbershop (the space they expanded into) that use to give me crappy haircuts and the Arco gas station right next door (it's now a condo/apt complex). Don't ever shut down!! Food is usually good but the last couple of times I was so disgusted on how they handle the food that I will not step foot in this place anymore. The old lady touches the food and wraps it after handling money and sweeping the floors with a broom. They need to use gloves. No sanitation here at all. On top of that, she is extremely rude. After we told her that she got us the wrong food, she yelled in front of other customers for $2. We gave a $20 so they understand money isn't what its about and walked out. Kibee is ground meat mixed with herbs wrapped in fried dough. Sadly, Sasoon's kibee was dry and bland. They sell on a plastic container, 4 for $4 bucks. I also had the yogurt drink, and it was a big mistake as well. Very sour. Service is still very good and fast. read more

The Old Sassoon Bakery makes the best baklavas I have ever had. They have the walnut, pistachios, cashews, cheese, etc. I tried all of them and they are all good! The combination between phyllo sheet, nuts, and sugar are just perfect. Trust me, I bought many many baklavas and they are the best!!! I also like the Armenian Pizza there; I normally stop by the morning and get them when they are still hot! Sooooo yummmmy!!! I don't live close to Pasadena anymore but whenever I have a chance, I would definitely stop by and order me some baklava. It freezes really well. read more

So my delightful daughter turned 24 recently and wanted knefeh for her birthday dessert... huh? Not sure how that happened because we're pretty far removed from being middle eastern folk but that's cool because I love, love, love middle eastern food, too. So a good friend of mine turns me on to Old Sasoon Bakery. So I get up sort of early and drive to Pasadena to buy it for her and unfortunately they were out.... :( I ended up buying some really delicious cookies, though. My favorites were the unsweetened buttery/savory ones. Yuuuuummmmyyy. I will definitely be back for those. The guy that helped me was super cool. I asked him where I could get some (she wanted the kind with the ashta cream, not the nuts) and he directed me to Vrej and Sarkis. Review is for the boreg and khachapuri. So good! Maybe the best khachapuri I've ever had. The boreg was good but it wasn't made to order like the khachapuri so you can tell it wasn't as fresh. You can customize the khachapuri and add a sunnyside up egg, basterma (cured beef), or sojouk (spicy sausage), and cheese. The dough used is delicious. If they made their other menu items at the time of order rather than warming up this place would for sure be a five star location. No seating inside but they have a nice outside set up with tables and umbrellas. read more

I never used this bakery so my review is simply on a phone call and the only reason I leave this review is hopefully owners see it. I called to ask some questions about their products, because I'm looking to buy middle Eastern sweets to serve at our restaurant so this could have been a great income for them. I called and asked if owner was in and the woman that answered the phone very rudely told me no they are on vacation and as I was asking when would you like for me to call back she hung up the phone on me. Old Sassoon Bakery serves a wide variety of both sweet and savory pastries. I'm more into the savory stuff - the beorags (baked bread turnover-type stuff, filled with spices, cheeses, veggies, meats or a combination of those things), lahmajune ("Armenian Pizza"), manaish (round flat bread topped with a thyme/sesame mix, chilies and/or Aleppo pepper), and the khachapuri. The cookies and baklava, however, is also very delicious and highly recommended to anyone with a sweet tooth. Their offerings are very affordable and amazingly good. I'm a fan of egg dishes, and their khachapuri with egg and cheese really hits the spot. Khachapuri, however, are made-to-order, so either call them ahead of time or be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes for yours (for one khachapuri. Larger orders may take longer). Otherwise, if you're in a rush, they usually have most everything else ready to enjoy and/or take home. For those who aren't lactose intolerant, I highly suggest the spicy cheese (with a white cheese, aleppo pepper and mint filling) and regular cheese beorags (with a white cheese, mint and minced onion filling). If you eat meat, the soujouk (Armenian spiced ground beef and onion) and cheese and basturma (Armenian spiced and cured sliced beef) and cheese beorags are worth trying. read more
