Can't believe I just discovered this place - it's easy to miss since it's hidden in Fairview Crescent at UBC, a bit separated from the main campus, but worth the visit if you're looking to broaden your horizons. It seems to be a family-run business and they offer an eclectic assortment of food and drink: the standard coffee shop fare of sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee/tea, plus milkshakes, smoothies, tteok bokki, and some interesting desserts to round it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of everything I ordered! I got the Pesto Melt Bagel, Tiramisu, and an Apple Cider. The bagel was grilled lightly (any less would have been not enough, but I liked the way they did it, which gave it a little crispness and warmth without loosing the fresh texture), the tomatoes were fresh, and it wasn't too oily, which is sometimes a problem for me on this type of sandwich. The tiramisu was nice and a little bit different from the usual since it was more like a trifle or parfait than a cake slice. I liked the custardy mascarpone layers and the syrupy espresso sauce at the bottom. Finally, the apple cider was really good. It came with a piece of dried apple and lemon slice and had a spicy flavour, and was sweetened tastefully. The prices are pretty fair (cheaper than other UBC coffee shops). The shop itself is really cozy - it feels like walking into a home - they have lots of couches in addition to regular tables and chairs, and there's also seating upstairs which I didn't check out. The staff also seem to be very nice. I do think it would be nice if they had more vegetarian sandwiches, but otherwise I'm really happy to have finally tried this place, and definitely will be back again. read more

If you lived on campus this would be a great little winter hangout. Kind of an 80s/90s designed space and the coffee is passable as are the bagel sandwiches if you were hunkering down with your study buddies or Settlers of Catan people - but not as a stand-alone destination. read more

A bit pricier but is a nice, quiet location that is tucked away and cozy to spend time at. Great for sitting down and getting some work done with many selections. A black currant lemonade and English muffin was 13$ before tip. read more

One-line review: A fun adventure at UBC, but the jury is still out. My wife was excited about trying this place, so away we went. We found the inside cozy and relatively quiet, as a number of students were there studying. We ordered: - Rose tteokbokki (a melange of boiled eggs, meatballs, mandoo, hash browns, rice cakes, and fish cake in a spicy sauce -- in this case, more than spicy enough. This was fun to try once, but there's not enough food here for what they're charging, so if I return, I'll get something else.) - Strawberry milkshake (fine but unremarkable) Parking is NOT easy or cheap on campus, but because of her work, my wife has free parking not far away, for which I was grateful. The servers were kind to us as first-timers who didn't really know what we were ordering. Bottom line: This looks like an interesting spot, and I'd try it again. I cannot believe that a) I haven't reviewed this place until now, and b) This place has never been reviewed before. You see, the Beanery is THE BEST COFFEE SHOP IN THE WORLD! The first time I ventured into this fabulous wonderland was around 1990, and it has remained so ever since. Let's start off with some logistics. This place is two stories, and full of both comfortable couches for lounging and plenty of tables and chairs for sitting. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, yet often lively with chatter. A huge array of polaroids from days gone by are displayed at the front counter, which I've always felt conveys a sense of community. Next, entertainment. There is a selection of games behind the counter that you may use free of charge while at the shop. Not in the mood for board games? Perhaps you would like to use the pool table, or one of the computers. Or you could just watch TV on the monitor by the main counter. And last but certainly not least, the food and drink. I've heard the coffee is great, but since I don't drink coffee I'm going to skip right ahead to what really matters: the hot chocolate. Not only is the drink itself worth its weight in gold, they top it with chocolate whip cream, and then add chocolate shavings. And, as with all food and drink at the beanery, it comes with a complementary melon slice and a mini cup of chocolate covered almonds. As for the food, besides the bagels and muffins, it's mostly re-heated stuff. But it's still pretty tasty, and always served with a smile. I hope this place never closes. read more

I am a fan. I do miss this coffee place. I miss living in Fairview Residence simply because I miss being around this coffee shop. The prices are reasonable. You can stay here all day comfortably studying and eat all your meals here. It's definitely infested with all of us students, but parents often bring their younger children here in the day time. I have gotten many-a paper done here in my lifetime. I love the coffee. I love the chocolate almonds they serve with it. I love the mochas topped with chocolate whipped cream and chocolate flakes! No one else does that!! :( The cookies and muffins are delicious. I can't believe I didn't think of reviewing this before Desiree M posted this! The guy at the cash is a little rude. he outright insulted me the other day for paying in cash. so maybe don't pay cash, ignore him and enjoy the coffee and the ambience :) The mocha is so good. It is one of the best mochas in town. The food is a little on the pricy side and of much lower quality than you might expect, but there's no other option nearby unless you feel like talking a break from study and you are willing to walk 5 minutes to the UBC village. Plenty of option for food over there It's an excellent place to study or work. On working days this place stays open till 10 or so. People are very quiet most of the time, particularly in the upstairs. During the exam periods this place is busy all the time and it is very hard to find a spot to sit. Usually people are nice and are willing to share a table with a stranger. You can get UBC visitor wifi from here. The store doesn't have their own wifi. There are only two parking spots for customers on Pearkes Ln next to the beanery. Parking is limited to one hour, although I have asked the person at the cash if I can leave my car there for a longer period and they said it's fine. If you are here after work, there is free unlimited parking after 6pm on agronomy 20 meters from the beanery. This place is a little hard to find since it is hidden away inside the student housing. The beanery is a small cafe tucked away in the Fairview Crescent residence of UBC. Provided you can find a table in this tiny little cafe, it's a great place to study, hold meetings or simply relax and contemplate the meaning of life. They provide hot tea and espresso beverages at a reasonable price, and they also have hot food and some really cool desserts! I'm a particularly big fan of their cinammon rolls (which I am told were ordered from a bakery on Broadway and Alma, however they arrive sweet, gooey and mildly crunchy, and can be that tasty treat that you need to wind down from a hectic day of classes and extracurriculars. Their London fog is sublime, and acts as my go-to beverage whenever I pay them a visit. Their brownies are acceptable, but I can't say much about their hot savoury dishes, as I've never tried them. They do go into a microwave which may be upsetting for some, but I haven't heard any complaints from the friends that have tried them, so I'd assume they're reasonably good. read more

So I'm happy to say I've found my new favourite place to study on campus! I'm sure many other people share this same love, judging from the colourful array of hundreds of Polaroid photos covering the walls showing satisfied customers. This is one of those coffee shops that you can't help but feel super cozy and warm in, even if it's bright and sunny outside. It's got 2 floors with plenty of comfy couches, as well as tables and chairs, which is super useful seeing as it's constantly full of students cramming for midterms or writing papers. I love all the drinks, especially the teas and smoothies. but what boosted my rating up by 2 stars automatically is the fact that they serve everything with a little cup of chocolate-covered almonds!! :-) read more

I was a bit surprised to see all the great reviews. While it's true that it's a nice place to study and quite convenient because of its location on campus, there are way nicer coffee shops in Kitsiliano not too far from UBC. I still come here sometimes because some of my friends live in Fairview. As for the food, the cakes and cookies are quite nice, but don't get the vegetarian lasagne! I shared it with a friend once and we both didn't like it at all. The Beanery is still a nice place to study for students who live in Fairview - for everyone else, I recommend trying Calhoun's or Platform 7 on Broadway! read more

Well, my husband and I are having breakfast there 4 days a week and find it just great. The coffee is one of the best on campus and the people are just great and friendly. The chocolate whipped cream on top of the hot chocolate is just to die for. I love getting my morning paper read and just relax before going to work. Great place! read more

Me an my boyfriend call each other bean as pet name so when we saw this place we knew two beans belonged in the Beanery! I live pretty close to ubc and so do my boyfriends parents so we are around this area a lot. On days we both dont have work and he stays over it goes without saying that we will be visiting the beanery! The location and atmosphere in the store is my favorite thing about it and the hot chocolate is one of the best I've had in the city (aside from my famous white chocolate hot chocolate :p) I get the coffee mostly though because I do not have the metabolism of an Olympic swimmer :'( The coffee is good and I really enjoy the lazy early morning/afternoon breaks I spend here with my bean! read more

Love this place. So glad I discovered it in it's well-hidden location in Fairview! I come here sometimes in the early mornings to study/read, and I just love the atmosphere and coziness of the place. The couches upstairs are so ridiculously comfortable...my favorite spot on campus to do some reading. All I usually order if coffee and their coffee is decently good so I'm happy. The man at the front (the owner?) is always so friendly and greets you with a cheerful "Good morning!". And they also got renovated this year so now they still have those same great couches but the color coordination is better and the tables and chairs are matching. Love love love The Beanery. The Korean guy in the cash counter is a total jerk. He is very rude to customers and he talks sarcastically to almost everyone in response to their questions. Few days ago he almost kicked out few customers during the time of closing. I have been going to this coffee shop for last 6 years. All the previous owners were very nice people. This guy is ruining the reputation of this famous old coffee shop in UBC. read more

Good for studying (unless people take their kids here and let them run around to all the tables disturbing the studying students, which has happened a few times). Hard to find a table usually. If you take your kids here please don't let them run around and scream and disturb everyone. There are playgrounds right around the coffee shop, get your coffees to go. read more
