The ambiance is fantastic. Dim lit with nice music. Open table tops to walk in with a small bar, then a little nook on the back that provides more privacy. Nice for a group or couple, or alone. Bartender hooked up a few decent mocktails, but I didn't find him to be welcoming or particularly of much help really, even when I asked questions. Then, the bartender gave my friend's credit card to someone else, and was rude and condescending, calling her "babe" when HE lost her credit card! Used to really love this bar but had a terrible experience the other night. The bartender accidentally gave my credit card to another person who left with it. Totally understand it's really dark in there, and mistakes happen but he was so dismissive, rude and condescending to me as I asked questions. Kept calling me "babe" which I find so offensive and unprofessional/inappropriate even for a bar. It's been days and I left my name and number but nobody has contacted me - I'm not surprised. The drinks were okay, definitely overpriced, but I didn't like being made fun of for ordering an espresso martini either. I felt judged from the minute I walked into this place. A friend recommended we come here. It's not a dive bar but it's not a fancy cocktail bar. It's somewhere in between, which was perfect for what we were looking for. I've been meaning to come here for years and was so glad to have visited this past weekend. Came around 4pm on a Saturday and there was plenty of room to grab a seat. They have a good beer and wine selection and while the cocktail menu is short, it's very good! The bartender was also very friendly and accommodating. Yes, this place is dark, but not THAT dark. Definitely great for a date. Pro tip - bench seats on the side are cocktail table height so be prepared to do a little jumping if you are below the height of 5'7"! read more

The 2014 Vaca Das Cordas Vinho Verde from Portugal is one of the most reasonable drinks at $12 a glass, but it is fabulous - crisp, refreshing, and full of ripe green apple flavor. I really don't share the majority of sentiment regarding reviews here on Yelp. Sorry! But I just don't love it. Been here a couple times. Seems to be a date spot or for a small group of friends. As everyone stated, it's very dark--the addition of candles helps somewhat but not much. First off, it's quite a walk from West 4th Street subway and nearly by the river. It's really out of the way. Upon entrance through the curtain adorned doorway, there's the front part--high top tables situated in front of cushioned backed seating all side by side. This makes it difficult to speak with an individual since its against The wall. The cushioned seats appeared worn out and in need of upholstery. There's a back room with a few sofa like seating. This is where, I am sure, some PDA might take place. I get it. The setup for this bar is about creating a cozy, dark and inviting atmosphere (especially if it's a date so I hope the couple fancies one another), but in my opinion there's nothing special about it. Without naming other establishments, there are so many that truly have that impressive ambiance. The ones with the wow factor whether it's a date or chilling with friends. Their drinks/wine merits the stars and in the end, it's also about the company one is with. Still, meh for me. read more

Awesome place! Perfect for a date night or a pre dinner drink. There is one bartender and the place isnt big so if you dont find a seat it may be tough to fully experience the place. I wouldnt consider this a cocktail bar but it is a great atmosphere where you can get a cold beer and a specialty drink if you are in the mood. Love this little gem in the west village! This place was built for dates (cozy seating, candle light, fun music). It is mainly a beer and wine bar with limited cocktail options. On quiet nights the bartenders would also make custom cocktails based on your preferences, which was fun! Pre-COVID, I loved coming to the other room for drinks and wandering around the west village afterwards - it doesn't get more romantic than that. They have since built outdoor seating and it was nice in summer but I can't comment on their winter set up. read more

My friend and I wanted to try a speakeasy in the West Village, and this came up in our searches. It wasn't anything too special, in my opinion. Not sure what classifies it as a speakeasy, either, other than the fact that it was just in a more obscure street where there were more residential houses than other restaurants. Just seemed like a regular bar. A regular bar in Manhattan, anyway, which means expect to pay more than you'd like to spend for drinks. We both got ciders, bottled, since they didn't have any on tap at the time. I suppose a contributor to the speakeasy vibe was the dark, cozy setting, though darkness is just something I've come to associate with bars. It certainly didn't have an amusing, disguised entrance. The bar was packed, though, at least when we first got there. We managed to snag seats at the counter, and then halfway through our drinks, a couple behind us left so we could sit at one of the tables. I've been here three times, and two out of the three it was because every other bar in this area was packed. Don't get me wrong: this isn't a last resort type of place. Far from it -- literally, it's kind of far to get to from the main thoroughfare of the West Village. It might look like it's packed on the outside (especially on a Thursday/Friday/Saturday evening), but usually you can find seats inside. The place has an interesting set up. There's a sleek leather booth running along one entire wall with three tables. These are probably the prime seats in the house, so to speak. The space is bigger than it looks on the outside, but you can tell they're not trying to maximize real estate to cram more people in. They are really all about creating that intimate vibe. Great date place. Drinks are on the pricey side. Cocktails run from $15-18 last time I checked, but they are a better deal, in my opinion, than wine. For a couple of bucks more you get a really delicious concoction that is STRONG. Have gotten the Negroni and the Old-Fashioned. Both are excellent. You can nurse one drink all night and feel very good walking out. read more

I don't know what it's like during the day but at night it feels like a secret. It's dark and candle lit with a friendly but somewhat moody bartender who has a killer play list. I came here on a date last night because he had heard that this spot was cool and he wanted to check it out. Upon walking into the bar, it was EXTREMELY dark, like, only candles keeping the place lit. There is a bar area, some seating along the wall, and then this back area with a big couch where believe it or not it's even darker. We sat at the bar, as that was the most comfortable spot for sitting with a stranger in the dark. The place was pretty empty, it was a Monday after all. They don't have any beer on tap, just bottles, and then a good selection of wine, spirits etc. I got a glass of wine and my date got a beer. The bartender had friends at the bar and she was chatting with them the whole time, which is fine, but not really paying attention to if we wanted a second round or not. I would not come back here mostly because I was getting creepy dungeon vibes like I wouldn't be able to leave if I tried. I wonder if the owners/employees of The Otheroom are aware that this a go-to spot for couples who aren't afraid of a little PDA. I mean, it's pretty impossible to ignore. Other than one larger group in the back, everyone here was paired up when I came here on Saturday night. It's basically a makeout den (that's a huge exaggeration - we did not walk into an orgy - it's just sexy). I wouldn't come here on a first date though - go with someone you're really interested in. Everything about this place is intimate. For starters, it's nestled away on Perry St., so it's removed from the craziness of the West Village. When you enter, you find yourself in the love cave. It's probably the darkest bar I've been to, the only lighting coming from small candles on each table. For seating, you have your choice of chairs or couches. But mostly couches. So don't despair if you can't sit at a table immediately - there's plenty of couch space between tables as well. This place is exclusively a wine and beer establishment, so go elsewhere if you want a gin and tonic. I stuck with beer given that personally, I've found that wine drunk is very, very dangerous. Sadly, I wasn't a huge fan of the two beers I ordered. They weren't bad, just not what I was hoping for. Oh well. This a great little beer & wine bar in the West Village. It is very laid back, and relaxing - a great place to unwind with some friends when you are not looking for a nutty night out. Be warned - it is dark in here, like really dark. As in, you need to give your eyes time to adjust to see anything dark. That is ok, they had lots of comfy seats. The music they played was very eclectic to say the least. The Greatful Dead were playing when we came in and played for a while, then the mix changed to Depeche Mode - a bit depressing, but I enjoyed it all the same. Seductive, Sensual, Intimate and Charming! This small dimly lit wine bar is such a find. I have read that it is great for first dates and dates period. I agree with the casual first date where the low light and mildly scented candles set the mood. Around 9pm on a Friday night is a medium crowd, mostly mid twenties and very friendly. The music is mild and subdued so you can hear yourself speak. By 11:30/12:00 am the place gets packed, the music gets louder and the place is in full swing. The velvet couch seating area in the back are great! The area is small but not tiny, so you get to know your neighbors, but not feel cramped. Two warnings: 1. There were only two bartenders, but they were attentive. Since the place is small you have to go to the bar to order your drink, you can not expect them to come and serve you. 2. I went to a friend's birthday party here on a Saturday afternoon and I liked it a lot. Very cozy, nice beer list and friendly bartender. They have a very nice lounge-type area in the back but even the front part is nice, with a cool bar and a high banquette against the wall. Only weird thing was that it was super dark in there! My eyes are not the best but the back part of the bar was almost pitch black. I could barely recognize some of my friends. It's too loud to be a lounge. I just began playing on my cellphone because I couldn't talk to my friends without hurting my voice. Yet, it's not loud because it's meant to be dancing?! It's just loud for no reason other than to be obnoxious from what I saw. Also, the whole look and decor didn't match the electronica music they were blasting. I couldn't even tell who were bartenders. We went because we heard the back was a good lounge area but all I saw were velvet couches that I would never put a backlight to. Nary a light in the place, this very romantic bar is well placed outside of the highly trafficked part of the West Village. Dimly illuminating your way through the bar are many candles and a slight glow from the bar. There are seats at the bar, high top tabls and comfy couches in the back -- where it is even darker. A mile of taps and a cornucopia of wine complete the treasures of the Other Room. More so, since this bar is in a desert of quality drinking establishments in this area of town. The only problem is the douche-y crowd. The ones that have a lot of money and need to show it. Who must talk about your last European vacation --- again and again? 'Eh, nothing too special about this place. It's a dim type of bar/lounge with some cushioned chairs in the back room and along the side, some high chairs in the middle and of course, your bar area. They only serve beer and wine (HH is Mon-Wed from I believe 5-8pm), and a few things to munch on. It's pretty simple so if you like to get fancy cocktails, skip this place.
