We came before 4PM and were the only car in line! Score! The fish fry is only $12.95 when you come through the drive and is huge! You get a few pieces of fish, fries, rye bread, some slaw, and a full belly. We only ordered three dinners and still had left overs. Our family of four couldn't even finish the whole meals! We went on a Saturday evening to listen to some music and have a nice meal with a group of 6. The music was perfect with all the patrons and staff smiling and enjoying themselves. Drinks were excellent with great old fashions and a nice wine selection. We had a reservation for 7:00 and waited in the bar listening to the live music. I did not want to leave to go to my table. The bacon wrapped, garlic filet was cooked to perfection. My wife said it may have been the best steak that she has had in years. The ribs were also delicious and a table favorite. After dinner we went back to the music in the bar. All the patrons were friendly and mingling together, the bar service was outstanding and friendly. We only tried the drive through fish fry here but boy was it good. We all agreed that this was the best fish we have EVER had. That is a pretty strong statement from me. We have since tried the Final Approach and we'd return to The Packing House hands down, esp for the fish. I was at the packing house for an earlier dinner last night. There was maybe one other table sat in the very front area of the dining room. It was hard not to notice what was going on in the restaurant. There was a young woman who came up to the hostess stand and was talking quietly to the two women and then what appeared to be the general manager the man who is always on the news commercials for the packing house, he stormed to the hostess stand and was red in the face and a kind of anger in his eyes and we noticed he started to make her cry. He told her that he DID NOT CARE how she felt or how he made her feel and he's not sorry... yet the two other women expressed care and concern for her and asked her not to leave. We heard another coworker say they had no idea what his problem was or why he's been so mean and that pretty soon nobody will want to work there anymore. I lost respect, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I will not support a business who treats their employees so poorly. Do better packing house management. read more

A Milwaukee institution! A family owned business we great steaks and excellent service. Stopped in the Wednesday before Thanksgiving had an amazingly tender prime rib, and savory steak au poive. An old school supper club, but with more of a Nixon yrs-1970s-early 1980s old school feel to it, as opposed to a rat pack 1950s atmosphere. The dining room had one of those bars that was a bar on one side and a serving station for the dining room on the other. Outside its pretty hard to tell what the inside will hold, but its location opposite the airport makes it possible to watch the planes start their approach for landing close to the airport, and that gives it a certain cache, (not sure that's the right word but I liked it.) So, we came for their Easter brunch, which was featured along with their traditional dinner menu. The special easter dinner offered featured a ton of ham, potatoes with orange hollandaise sauce and asparagus. I had something called Chicken Monterey which was pretty good and was enough to take home for a second meal. Surprisingly though, my mom's vegetarian and gluten-free risotto was probably the best dish. They gave you a huge portion of risotto with goat cheese, Portobello mushrooms and other veggies. All the dinners came with a large loaf of homemade bread to start. The food was good, but I'm guessing steaks are their forte. Definitely had a nice experience here with the family tonight. We got here about a half hour after they had opened and it wasn't busy at all. The attention was on us. Classy restaurant, good service and jazzy music playing for a nice relaxing dinner. Most of us had ordered the beef wellington with green beans and some sides to go with it. Wellington was cooked perfectly. Sides were great. Ordered an old fashioned and that was tasty. Sometimes I don't know if you're paying more money for the classy dining experience or the food itself. We had a pretty hefty bill in the end, so don't expect the bill to be small. If you have ever been in the area of the 900 block of E. Layton on a Friday, you may have wondered what the line of cars pulling into the Packing House was for. That is their fish fry drive through. Super convenient and fast. You must have cash though. I have done the drive through fish for years. Recently, I decided I should go have a sit down meal. Know that the hostess stand is sort of tucked away. Make a right, walk by the coat room and then make a left. I am unsure if they take reservations. One employee told me they didn't. Another asked me if we had reservations. We got there around 5:30 and were told we could get a table at 7:30. I normally never would wait that long anyplace but decided we could sit at the bar and sip Old Fashioneds. By 7:45 we still weren't seated so I went to see what was up. The hostess said someone would get us and a few minutes later that happened. We were starving and ordered their onion rings. They were $9.99 which seemed excessive. Until we got them. Check out the photo. They were so good. Super crispy. I got the cod fish fry. It was even better than the drive through version. Perfectly breaded cod with delicious fries. Our server was great. We were told to experience a "supper club" when we visited Milwaukee, and this was the first one we came across. Convenient to the airport and our motel, we decided to give it a try. The coat check was quick, and we were seated immediately, even it being a busy Saturday night. The food was out of this world, and the steaks cooked to perfection (done all the way through, but not burned). The Packing House is an old fashioned type of supper club restaurant. They have live music many nights of the week. They have steaks and traditional foods that many would expect to find on the menu like lobster and shrimp. It is a great place to go for a special occasion or to take friends who are visiting from out of town. It is right by the airport so location is excellent for that. They are known for their fish fry. Make reservations if going for Fish Fry it is a Milwaukee Favorite! I will say it is a bit more expensive than I usually like to spend on my usual nights out. For a special occasion it is excellent and I would recommend it for that. The food is good and so is the service. read more

They are known for their steaks, and have had the beef Wellington... but my favorites are the veal Oscar and the walleye almandine with linguine Alfredo.... the veal with that sauce and crab... ooooh and the flaky firm texture of the walleye... steaks are good. I went here for lunch because of the many local recommendations. The outside is very simple and does not do justice to what you find inside; nicely decorated, clean and modern. Great atmosphere!!! I imagine this place is hopping at night. I had the soup of the day (potato au gratin) and the chef salad. The soup was so tasty and fresh and the salad was more than enough for lunch and contained two cheeses, plenty of ham, sliced hard boiled eggs, and choice of house made dressing. We heard about this one Friday morning on WPR and wanted to try it out. Apparently, it is a Milwaukee favorite. If this is the best fish fry in Milwaukee, I am sad for the citizens of Milwaukee. High level summary: Bartenders, great. Host staff, great. Music, great. Food and service, not so great. I think their bar is fantastic. The bartenders were great and honestly, I had the best muddled Old Fashion I've ever had. I'm not an old fashion drinker normally but when in Rome, right? The bar also had great live Jazz music. The band on deck that night was amazing. I would go back to this place just to sit at the bar. The host staff also were attentive and accommodating. The fish fry and the service however was lackluster and unimpressive. I can't speak to the rest of the menu because our intention was to have "the best fish fry in Milwaukee". I challenge the citizens of Milwaukee to travel a ways up North here to truly find a great Wisconsin fish fry! We have so many options that beat the pants off the Packing House. Overall, I love Milwaukee and won't let this deter me from visiting a highly underrated awesome place to visit. I also would go back to the Packing House for the bar and live music. We had our son's rehearsal dinner here and good not have been more pleased. From our first meeting with Joan right up to the event we were thrilled with our choice. Joan helped us plan a very spectacular event that we were proud to give our guests. Joan was responsive to all inquiries and questions. Joan, Dawn (the bar manager) and waitstaff helped us put on an elegant event providing food, beverages and service our guests raved about that night and even at the wedding. The Packing House has been my "go to" restaurant to celebrate a birthday or dinner with friends. The latest visit shows that everyone can have an off night - or that standards may be slipping. While waiting at the bar, I ordered a brandy old fashion sweet. I was surprised that the bartender mixed brandy with a pre-mixed liquid, not adding any sweet soda or muddled fruit. Dinner began with lukewarm soup, and entrees appeared too soon after. My pork tenderloin was also lukewarm (and dry) but the stuffing was super-hot, indicating the use of a microwave. The accompanying mashed potatoes were just offensive. Dessert was the highlight of the evening, the banana cream pie was delicious. Service was pleasant, but rushed. I may give the Packing House one more try, but only after trying out other supper clubs. read more

They had a band playing in the bar area which I enjoyed. My friends and I had a good time. Service was good. Employees were friendly. I will differently stop in again when in the area. Still filling seats and grilling meats! To say that the Packing House is a "South Side classic" is a bit of an understatement. Many others have come and gone: The Rafters, Salen's, The Columns, South Wood's, etc... In the Pantheon of SSSC (South side supper clubs), The Packing House is IT! Serving up all of the classics, for many years now, when I'm looking for a "nice" place for lunch near my office, I never look past the PH. Universally loved by every salesperson I have ever taken here, I'm always happy to oblige. Whether is be a sandwich, pasta, or a salad, the PH never disappoints. The fish fry here is also a staple. Not sure if it was the PH or Serb Hall that pioneered the drive-thru fish fry, but I am positive that the PH invented the drive-thru Thanksgiving dinner! My mother is handicapped and some years it is just two or three of us for Thanksgiving, certainly not worth going all out on a bird with all the trimmings, so why not let the pros cook for you?! It can be very challenging for my mother to go to a restaurant, so the drive-thru at PH ticks all the boxes. I was going to give them four stars, but I just decided to pump it up to five as I am remembering how thankful I have been for their drive-thru Thanksgiving dinner! read more

My generous daughter from NYC called me today and said she had ordered a fish fry for me. All I had to do was pick it up. I did call the Packing House and talked to Alissa, who is so personable and professional. I indicated that I would pick it up at 3:15. Upon my arrival, the older hostess' attitude needed an adjustment. Not the first person I would want to interact with. I asked for Alissa, who had my order ready for me. When I got home the fish fry was not even warm. It probably was one of the ones that was for the drive thru. To add insult to my order, the two small end pieces of the loaf of bread were suppose to be part of my order were stale. Talk about disappointment. read more

First visit, table for 8. Ordered beef wellington. No flavor whatsoever. The sauce had flavor but wasn't a good flavor. Soup was ok. Vegetables had no flavor. Bacon wrapped water chestnut appetizer was best part of the meal. Though others had the salmon which they enjoyed.
