The potato pancakes were hockey pucks and had a weird taste, and the coleslaw was limp and flavorless. FISH FRY EXPERIENCE Made reservations for 7:30 on a Friday. It was a packed house.."the packing house". We've had their carry out fish fry multiple times and it's been one of the best fish fry's we've had. We were super stoked to actually try their fish fry in house as we've sampled/rated over 30 fish fry's in Milwaukee! Dining inside the food was definitely not of the same quality. Potato pancakes (more like dehydrated crackers) and fish were both super dry. We've sampled over 30 fish fry's in the Milwaukee area and packing house carry out was ranked #1 but after this visit it's definitely dropping down on the list. Every single place we've visited for a fish fry we've always split one. Note at the packing house they charge a "split fee" which I'm totally cool with but my issue is you actually get two fish fry's. We didn't want two fish fry's because the other one will just get thrown out and with how much food waste takes place in the world just grinded my gears. Also note none of this was explained to us. Again I get it I don't mind paying a split fee but we didn't want twice the amount of food as it's wasteful and doesn't get eaten. Asked for extra tartar sauce which usually would mean two tarter sauces but nope came with four. The bus boys and bus girls were great but the rest of the experience wasn't worth coming back for. Took an hour plus for food, service was slow, lots of managers running around wait staff looked stressed. A structural staff change would help. Overall disappointing experience. If you like fish fry's stick to the drive thru. The skinny is just an ok steak house. I was unimpressed by the service and the food. I have taken a photo of the meal. I ordered the filet special $49 with a side of Alaskan crab $20. The food arrived and my thoughts were no cocktail fork for the crab. No lemon for the crab. My side of potato was missing. With the bottle of wine I ordered it was a sup par $130 dinner for one. Thank for the staff didn't know about wine or I would have ordered the Caymus wine. I asked the vintage and the response was I don't know no one orders that. Ha ha. I would know the year of the most expensive bottle of wine in the place. When the potatoes arrived they needed seasoning like salt. Steak was more medium than the medium rear I ordered. The interior at the bar was casual and classy. Watched the jazz band do pop covers old and new. John Legend, Stevie wonder, etc Great band in a cozy setting. Service was good. Food was super hot and I love that. Plate was almost burning hot and kept the food warm throughout the meal. Friday breaded perch was perfectly fried. Fish had a good texture. But it was a bit fishy for fried perch. I suspect the raw fish got a little old or warm at some point, whether that was the supplier or cook's doing. The Packing House is practically a super club legend in the Milwaukee area. My grandparents and parents both have fond memories of eating fish fry in this intimate, dimly lit setting. With live music, great food, and stellar service, this place seems to only get better with age. My husband and I ate there there several times before my Yelping days, but we had the joy of experiencing it again with some friends this past week. It is a perfect place to dine with friends because tables are well spaced to allow for conversation. The live music is in the main bar and can only faintly be heard in the dining area. The gentlemen started the night with Brandy Old Fashioneds. They came with fancy cherries, rather than the maraschino variety. Anyone looking to try a Wisconsin cocktail tradition ought to start with this one. We appetized (yes, I turned eating appetizers into a verb) on the crab stuffed mushrooms, freshly baked bread, and relish tray items. The mushrooms were a generous portion of six large caps packed with a flavorful crabby stufffing. They were topped with a dreamy hollandaise sauce and served piping hot! The salads followed. The Ceasars were something really exceptional. They were sprinkled with a nice amount of freshly grated parm, and coated with a beautiful, slightly salty dressing. The house salads were average, but taken up a notch by the dressing. The ranch and blue cheese were undoubtedly house made. I have a second stomach for basically any kind of salad, but find particular joy in eating minimalist dressing that doesn't come from a bottle. Entree selections included beef wellington, garlic stuffed filet, and salmon. The wellington was exquisitely executed and downright picture perfect on the plate. I ordered the salmon, which was flakey, moist, and well seasoned. It came with a dill sauce, which I requested on the side. It was fine, but I didn't feel like it added anything to an already delicious dish. My husband had the garlic stuffed filet. It was a. Perfect medium rare and kept the vampires away for sure. Dessert choices were equally pleasing. We went with shaum torte, baked Alaska, and the banana cream pie. This is the only Banana cream pie I've ever had that came close to my Grandma's homemade version. The nanners were sweet, but firm enough not to be mushy, the almonds gave a little crunch, and the crust was layers of flaky goodness. Finally, I'm going to compliment the service. Our waiter, Robert, was a newer server at The Packing House. He was actually our server at a different (and horrible) restaurant a couple years ago. He is a veteran waiter that is among the best we've ever had anywhere. It was great to see him thriving at a place worthy of his skills. He timed our orders just perfectly to ensure we got our apps, entrees, and desserts with enough time to actually enjoy them. He was quick to refill drinks and water glasses whenever needed. The best part, he's got personality and a little sass. I like a lively server and he fit the bill! I'd highly encourage patrons to request a table in his section. This was a bit of a roller coaster for my wife and I. We were in town for a couple nights and this was one of the only non-fast food restaurants open on a Sunday night in Milwaukee. It was rated great, so we went for it. Getting there left us with some questions, as it's across the street from the airport and in what appeared to be not the greatest part of town. The outside could pass for a pool hall/biker bar almost if you glance too quickly. However, upon going inside all was forgotten. It felt like stepping into a fairly upscale steakhouse. The food was downright delicious. My wife enjoyed the chicken parm and I had the salmon, and both far exceeded our (perhaps unfair) expectations from the exterior of the building. A fairly traditional steak house with a decent menu and good service. Our lunch order arrived quickly and was spot on. The menu has the meat and potatoes spectrum well covered which was great because that was our objective. Between the French Dip, Milwaukee Cheese Steak Sandwich, and half Cheese Burger... Wow! The Packing House is a moment in time, an anachronism and a hall of mirrors all wrapped up in one. Drinks are crisp and cold, service is very good and prices are pretty high. My Son Bob took me there for an early Mother's Day lunch. I can tell you it was Wonderful. And, my Bloody Mary & Chaser a 5 Star all the way. Believe me I'm a pro at that! Walking in I was so impressed with the ambience. Love the look. So spot on Atmosphere. The Waitstaff so friendly and courteous, very attentive. A great selection of food, it was hard to choose. The Onion Soup so delicious. The bread was perfect. I ordered Chicken Parmesan, nice and hot and so tasty. The Onion Strings and sauces, delicious. Great raves on the Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and spring Green Beans. The Owner stopped over and such a delight visiting with him and learning more history about The Packing House. It's Father's Day and we are in Milwaukee for a race. We wanted to have a good steak meal and decided on the Packing House because of the reviews. We arrived at 6:30 and had drinks in the bar area. After we were seated in the dining room the hostess realized it took so long to get our appetizer and comped us for it. It took forever to get the soups we ordered. The bread was delivered with the soups without butter and we had to ask for refills of water. The waitress told us it was taking longer because we asked for them to butterfly the filets which makes no sense because it allows it to cook more quickly and evenly. We finally received our steaks at 8:00 and were told by the waitress that it would be a couple of minutes if we wanted the baked potatoes we ordered with our meals. She said the mashed potatoes would be faster. The steaks were really good but we finished them before the baked potatoes came out at 8:30 which was not two minutes later. The hostess asked how our meal was and we told her the steaks were really good but we didn't receive our baked potatoes with our meals. The waitress could have been more attentive and caring about the wait. We were also charged for asparagus that we didn't order. read more

Our 5 friends went to the iconic Packing House to celebrate the 2 of us who had birthdays this month. We had been there about 3 months ago and the food and the service was amazing.... Then today was totally different. 3 of us ordered the special which was described to us as beef sirloin Wellington. When we got the Wellington it was a ground up hamburger in a pastry shell very disappointing I have never had a hamburger it was alway a steak wrapped in pastry. This had no flavor and we all ate only a few bites. When we got the bill it was labeled "hamburger Wellington " the waitress never revealed it would be a hamburger patty. The main complaint at the table was the liver and onion order. My friend ordered it medium rare! The liver came to the table and the liver was well done and burnt around the edges. My friend notified the waitress who then went to talk to the chef, she came back saying the chef did cook it correctly and called it a medium rare meat. The waitress had an attitude while explaining what the chef told her. My friend asked to send it back. When the waitress left with the liver we all wondered if the chef would sent it back RARE .... And sure enough the liver came back swimming in blood and was almost RAW my friend said oh my the chef must really be mad at her for sending the dish back, the waitress came back with a manager and seemed to double team her saying the chef did the first liver correctly stated he is been a chef here for years and there stood the two staff members "shaming " my friend about her opinion on her liver and how it was done They took back the liver again, the chef recooked the same piece of liver over, and boasted about how the chef put in back in the oven so not to dry it out. This new plate of liver was ruined and tasteless. My friend felt intimidated and didn't want to say anymore she didn't eat any of the liver and told us she couldn't even eat it she added " I am going to pay for it but I will throw it away when she got home. It was incredible seeing the staff shaming the customer who has a right to be satisfied with what she ordered , especially at the iconic Packing house. At the end of the meal when the bill came the waitress then (because it was tip time ) became more attentive and seemed to drop the attitude umm. I know the 5 of us will most likely not return to the packing house and will tell at least 5 other people about our very bad experiences ..... all because the Chef and waitress was not professional and blamed the customer !!!! But we had an appointment near the airport and this was the only restaurant open on a Monday. It is not in the books, but it should be! The Packing House has been a Milwaukee institution for many years. From the decor to the live music they have throughout the week, it is a step back in time to the Supper Club era of days gone by, which I absolutely love. The service and the staff here are excellent. You are truly made to feel welcome. And as for the food: I have never had a bad meal here. The two big things The Packing House is known for are their steak and fish fry. However, they have an extensive menu with many, many options, including seafood, pork, veal, chicken, and even vegetarian. The last couple of times I was here, it was to pick up one of their famous fish fry's. Every Friday, from 3-9pm, they open their drive thru just for the fish fry. Just be aware, it is cash only, so if you're looking to pay by card, you can step inside and place an order to go. The fish is a delicious hand-breaded Icelandic cod and is served with homemade tartar sauce, fries, marble rye bread, lemon wedges, and coleslaw. If you dine in, you also get your choice of fries or potato pancakes and a cup of clam chowder. The fish is delicious, and the portion size is very generous. Another reason I am a big fan of The Packing House is their support for the community, including law enforcement. They recently held fundraisers for two fallen Milwaukee Police officers, donating $1 from every fish fry sold to the officer's families. They also held two fundraisers in honor of a City of Milwaukee employee that was killed on the job. Please keep up the great work, and thank you for your support and generosity. read more

Showed up after 8pm. They decided to close early. I hate this. You advertise hours you should accommodate your customers. Walked in, the staff in the bar said nothing, walked into dinning room and was notified kitchen closed an hour early. Was told they werent from around there when we asked if they could recommend another option. We were looking forward to trying out this old school steakhouse. I drove past this place several times before deciding to give it a shot. The outside appearance of a "classic" upscale restaurant wasn't something that I really felt was "me" but we'll try it. Also, they have fish and I wanted a lighter choice. I started with the French Onion soup, which was perfect to recipe - a crock bowl with melted provolone on top, some croutons floating in a rich beefy broth with lots of tart onions. Anything I couldn't reach with the spoon was soaked up with pieces ripped off the huge loaf of bread. The fish came next - a big piece of breaded tilapia with steamed veggies and a big pile of wild rice. The veggies were good - not too mushy - and the rice had a great flavor. When I am in the area around dinnertime, this is a great restaurant to visit. We have been here twice and the food is just amazing. Since the last time we were here, they added a drive-through which is a very interesting (and apparently successful) concept for a steakhouse. We started with a couple of old fashioned, which were sweet and strong. And we ended up with an extra one because the bartender wasn't happy with how the first one turned out (the ice cube took up most of the glass). I was feeling a slight buzz after two of these. There was also a relish tray with radishes, celery and carrots. I had asked for a side of ranch dressing for the relish tray. Dressing was really good. We also received hot, fresh bread with a nice crust and a decent sized salad. The bleu cheese and italian were both very good. Hubby and I both had the beef wellington and it was excellent. It has a nice crisp puffed pastry outer casing with a medium cooked steak on the inside. I had the mashed potatoes which were delicious and hubby had the baked potato. For dessert, ordered the banana cream pie and creme brulee. The creme brulee was very good, with a nice carmelized crust and great flavor. We saved the pie for the next day and it was really good the next day. It wasn't watery and had good, creamy banana flavor, but not in an overpowering way. Definitely recommend this Milwaukee gem. read more

Well, I went to try their steaks since they came highly reviewed. I opted for for their signature filet..this garlic infused bacon wrapped filet. It was $40 for starters... So based on that price point, expectations were high. My started salad was just ok...as much as I hate to say this, but I've had fresher salads at hotel restaurants and even some diners/coneys. For $40, you'd figured on getting a pretty substantial crispy/cold salad...not here. The steak, well it was just ok. It wasn't muttony like some places can be, but I really don't feel it was $40 worthy. I would have given this place 4-stars if they'd drop the price to a more equitable/fair price of $28-$30 for that steak. Just saying... I like the location - close to airport hotels etc so that's nice. read more

Perfect kid friendly Sunday buffet brunch, standard selection of bad-for-you breakfast foods plus a decent salad bar, shrimp, salmon, small lunch menu items included in reasonable brunch price (Just under $20 for adults, $10 for the kiddies). Our comical waitress provided excellent service (clearing plates as soon as we got up for our next buffet trip). Decor is hotel-like, parking is ample and convenient, it's easy to get to, right off either 794 or 94 across from the airport. Skilled chefs will make fresh omelets, waffles, or carve some roast beef for you. A fair choice of desserts. I recommend the Sunday brunch for families. We hadn't been to The Packing House since we were dating, some 28 years ago, and we weren't too impressed then. That being said, I've been seeing some Facebook posts since Summer, and being enticed by pictures of decadent desserts, decided that tonight was the night to venture in for dinner. Walking in the door, the bar is straight ahead, and a funeral-home type room off to the right. We turned right and kept going until we came upon a dining room where we were immediately seated. The menu was very old-school supper club, and we both decided on the traditional fish fry as the line outside for the drive through was long and we thought it had to mean something, right? Our waitress, bless her heart, tried hard, but she was loud, placed our dishes hard, spilling things, and her grunt and groan style of communication didn't add much to the dining experience. We skipped the clam chowder and didn't want to spend $2 for an iceberg salad, so we had tomato juice and a small but fresh relish tray and some very good salted rye bread. The fish came, cod "squares" breaded in a plain breading, four pieces, with a serving of coleslaw and some tartar sauce. One order of fries (the standard fries) and one order of potato pancakes with a side of applesauce. The potato pancakes were almost burnt around the edges, and tasted bland and of flour, and the applesauce was somewhat warm. Overall, the meal was remarkably underwhelmingly bland. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate mousse cake. The mousse had an odd aftertaste, and was very oily, the berries were completely unsweetened, making them very bitter/sour and almost unpalatable to eat. I am not going to say the food was bad, I'm going to say that a fish fry is like a pizza--everyone has their personal tastes, and this one just isn't ours. However, I will say that if you enjoy white linens on your table, high priced entrees (for the regular menu) and a few carrot, celery sticks and pickles before your meal--with a retro heavy dining room--then The Packing House is for you. read more

One of my coworkers has a blackened steak salad and really enjoyed it. If it would have been a Friday I would have ordered the fish. They have a drive up window specifically for that! After taking several minutes to find anyone to help get us seated, was advised there wasn't an open table. After pointing out the lit sign outside, she just flipped the switch off and asked if we wish to wait. Hell no, I said. The food here is well-made and very delicious. The bread they give out is the best bread I've ever had! The only downside is that this restaurant is a bit too overpriced - but only just a bit.
