I took my corporate chef here during a stay over near the airport. I thought it looked better than anything else nearby. And for the most part, it was pretty good. Chef had the prime rib and thought it was excellent and I had scallops. Can't complain about the food, but I had issues with the service. I can't say it was bad, just a little uninformed about table presence. First off, it was a really long approach time to our table after being sat. Sometimes, a busser will come by and pour water and collect the extra settings which eases the anxiety. But it was really long. The waitress collected the extras and poured water. This was disappointing. The next was timing. She must have had the kitchen fire our entrees when she picked up the salads. With a cut of prime rib and scallops done scampi style, not much production time. The chef ate his salad really fast and figured he would run off to the restroom while I was finishing my salad. Out of the corner of my eye, here come the entrees. She dropped them, warning me to warn others that the plates were hot. Meanwhile, I'm still working on my salad. Then, the empty salad plate stayed there the entire meal. She never returned to check the table. Again, I don't think I had a bad server, I think they need to be better trained when entrees hover around the $30 mark. One high point for me were the wine by the glass prices. Typically, this is a very profitable area for a restaurant. When you get a glass of pretty good wine for $6.95 at a fine dining restaurant, it's a pretty rare occurrence. read more

We used to love the fish fry drive thru on friday nights. The problem we have with it is that the price kept going up but the quality of the fish and food kept going down. A little disappointing considering that we used to go there all the time. Oh and it was also frustrating that they only accepted cash the first time we went we didn't realize it waited 45 minutes in line and then got up to the window and then they said all cash only too bad. read more

We did the famous drive-thru fish fry. We actually were fortunate enough to go at a time where there was no wait... which was nice after hearing how the line of cars can go quite a ways down Layton Ave. Very solid fish fry with good quality fish and french fries. The drive-thru version made me think that actually eating inside the restaurant would take this food experience to another level, so we plan to do that next. It's not that the fish tasted old... I just imagine it'd be even better if I was able to get at it even faster than when it sits in a to-go bag for a little bit. read more

Im not sure if it was just on off night, or if The Packing house has lost its edge. I visited last night with a party of 7. Only two of us had steak and both of us were disappointed. I had a barrel steak which I ordered medium. When it came it was done medium well to well done...no pink at all. The taste was good but when you are paying almost $40 for a steak at a steak house it should be done to order. My friend ordered a fillet done medium well and it was burned and charred on the edges. She sent it back and got chicken. All the non steak eaters meals were fine. The waitress was good about making things right. I will think twice about going here for steak in the future with so may options in Milwaukee. read more

I had friends come in from out of state late on a Friday afternoon and we headed to the Packing House from the airport. It was not even 5:00 p.m. and the parking lot was almost completely full. The restaurant itself was full (they do take reservations) but there was room for us at a high top in the bar area. The service was excellent and the fish fry outstanding. The cod was moist and fresh in a light batter and the potato pancakes much fresher and better tasting than others I've had in town. We also enjoyed the clam chowder that started the meal. The rye bread was very salty but good tasting otherwise. The coleslaw was fresh and the tartar sauce had a homemade quality. We took home leftovers and they reheated well. read more

This makes 2 years in a row for being at P.H. for New Years Eve. I had salmon it was good. Prices seemed to be kicked up for New Years or the New Year ? The war dept. had steak and lobster, the steak was ordered medium well came barely medium but the waitress brought a new perfect steak back to her. Wanted to see Lem and his band again since they were great last year on New Years. For the most part the band was doing there best to carry Lem last night. He did not seem to get into it until after midnight and several disappearances and a gentleman that stood in for him that got things going at about 11:20pm. read more

Spent a great evening with friends enjoying a fabulous meal. We selected two appetizers - the stuffed mushrooms and fried eggplant sticks - each was delicious! Followed by a creamy Wisconsin cheddar soup and homemade bread and then the main course. I selected the scallops with asparagus and rice and enjoyed every single bite. We had our after-funeral luncheon for about 30 family and friends. I'd been here a few years back for another funeral but this was the first in which i had to help with decisions. The waitresses were very friendly, offering their respects and accommodating, especially for our family with many different dietary restrictions/requirements. One level with no stairs was great for guests with physical limitations. For their price they included salad, entrée and dessert with bread on table for a very reasonable price. Everyone was very satisfied with the taste of their food, chicken, pork, steamed veggies, or pasta alfredo. Some beverages were included but they also made some good Old Fashions as extra orders. High chairs were available. Their banquet room was tucked away in back for our privacy as well. Fantastic and highly recommended. read more

A great meal for sure!! We celebrated Thanksgiving today at the Packing House. A very nice meal indeed and wonderful staff. The meals were cooked superbly, the Lobster stuffed mushrooms were the best I have ever had. Mushrooms were coked to perfection and the lobster was real and not overpowering. Topped with a nice bearnaise sauce. For the mains we had the roasted duck and the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. Both cooked perfectly and generous portions. The turkey was a nice mixture of dark and white meat - delicious. I make this comment as other Thanksgiving meals we have had elsewhere served what was a "processed turkey". The packing house had fresh baked turkeys with the meat freshly sliced!! WONDERFUL!! Our waitress was very attentive and friendly, she was super busy and did an excellent job. My thanks to her for working on Thanksgiving and making our meal so nice!! Looking forward to going back. read more

Wow! Not much from the outside, but what a great place! Fun live music with a supper club feel. Had a delish beef wellington, and my boyfriend had a bacon wrapped, garlic stuffed steak. Went here for Father's Day with my uncle. I had a filet mignon, which was fantastic. I can't rave enough about how good it was. Then I ordered a chocolate peanut butter cheesecake slice, which I found to have a strange after taste. Not terrible, but nothing to rave about either. My uncle had some kind of pasta dish, however, that was really watery and below average quality. The staff were pretty nice overall, but some didn't look terribly enthused to be there. Overall decent, but wouldn't recommend them above other restaurants downtowns for anything but their steaks. read more

Well it took a while for us to come back, at the invitation of Chris Wiken, to see if our first impression was wrong. I'm happy to say it was. Our server, Lisa, was outgoing and friendly. She knew the menu well and made good recommendations. She checked on us often, but did not hurry us along. My husband and my mom both ordered the crab stuffed shrimp Alfredo. They both enjoyed it very much. I wasn't as hungry and just ordered a bowl of the chicken and spätzle soup. It was ok. Nothing exciting. They must have been making it fresh, as the spätzle were slightly undercooked. Thank you for inviting us back. We enjoyed our dining experience and the food was delicious. Lisa is a treasure! I had an amazing experience at the Packing House. It was my 50th birthday and I was traveling so wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner. Being at a hotel near the airport it's hard to know where to eat. I checked Yelp and decided to give this a try. The atmosphere was so nice and the service was top notch! My server was attentive but not overly intrusive. The food was outstanding. I had the garlic stuffed filet which was cooked to perfection. I loved the added touch of the relish tray and the bread was fresh and hot. The salad was a nice blend of spring greens and the Italian dressing was the perfect compliment to the lettuce. I ordered wine and the pours were generous. If I am staying in Milwaukee again I will know right where to go for a delicious meal. read more

Changed our reservation on a Friday night was very busy so we went to the bar which had a great jazz band. They sat us was right at the time of reservation was change for which was great. French onion I thought was very good the bread was good. Had steak and salmon for dinner two of us. Disappointed in both I was shocked the steak tasted like Sizzler steak. Service was good I did like the bacon dressing on the salad, I was just surprised for the money the steak was definitely not up to par and either was the salmon good service probably won't be back. read more

Awful food. I ordered the $40 Garlic stuffed filet mignon, one of their signatures, and I had to force myself to eat what I did. It was over cooked and the presentation was unimpressive. One of the worst steaks I have ever eaten and that says a lot. It even looked odd In color and the meat had a processed taste. The sides are small and bland. Bread is stale. They try to up charge you on many items. The place smells funny and is much in need of updating. The outside is drab. The place was virtually empty too at 8:00. The servers are very nice and welcoming but I was there for the food! Do not recommend sadly. read more

Many years ago we would frequent the Packing House they always had delicious food. This week we decided to go back to celebrate two family members birthdays. It started off by the hostess not being professional nor welcoming but forgot about it because our waitress was fantastic. Now the food was a different experience. Everything we had was way overpriced for the quality. So it just goes to show white linens and expensive prices won't give you fine dining. Try Mader's. You won't be disappointed. read more

This place transported me back to 1980 when I was a busboy at the Wigwam in Litchfield Park Arizona. They had Old school type relish tray (haven't seen these in over 35 years). The fresh, hot homemade bread was tasty! And the homemade mushroom and cheese wontons were good. I had the Garlic stuffed Filet (Great and tender), Onion Strings (Good), the sauce on the side was very good! And the Blue cheese potatoes, Piped on a a plate were good. They even had a live singer in the bar. Again, while some of their techniques a presentations transported me back in time, they don't need to change, the food was really good! read more

I took my fiance to the Packing House because we were craving steak. I ordered the Prime Rib, and my fiance had a sirloin filet. Both were absolutely delicious. Staff was kind, atmosphere is nice. Parts of the place seem really finished, others seem a little dim, as if the main dining room is used for something else. So, it's not the most entertaining place to look at, but if you're having a quiet fancy night this is a great destination. We stopped here for a quick lunch before a flight. What a great way to stay our vacation! Our food was quite literally fantastic. Sister and I had a stuffed chicken dish and the chicken with mushroom and rice (Monterey Chicken?) And they both were wonderful. Dad had the spinach salad with hot bacon dressing. My husband and I came here for dinner for our anniversary. We came based on Yelp reviews, and were very pleasantly surprised at how great the food and service really was. At the bar, we were taken care of by Konrad, who was up to my challenge of coming up with crafted cocktail based on my preferences. In the dining room, we were served by Janet. I don't know where they found her, but she is a true gem! I ordered the roast duck, and my husband had the grand steer filet, Oscar style,with the add on lobster tall. The food was all prepared perfectly, including my husband's request for extra bernaise sauce. The atmosphere is great old style steak house, complete with low lighting, wood architecture, and sinatra playing. We will be back! read more
