As a hardcore Yelp fan, I read a lot of the reviews before I came to the Palm and I had my heart set on the Lobster. Unfortunately, I was attending a set dinner and on our menu, there was no lobster being offered. That being said, the food I did order was delicious. However, be aware - if you are bad at portion control, you better have a HUGE stomach. Or else, you will be in pain (like I was later post-stomach-explosion). Here's my assessment of the food: 1) Complimentary: The bread - 4 stars. There was a wide variety of breads, with thick slices of white baguette, dark wheat, and walnut raisin. I had the latter two and while they were fresh, there was nothing spectacular about either. A bit too dense in my opinion - though that didn't prevent me from eating three slices (which I later regretted) 2) Appetizer: Mixed greens salad - 5 stars. Simple but with a variety of veggies like radishes, cucumbers, shallots, and tomatoes. I was impressed with the combination of flavors and textures of the fresh veggies. 3) Entree: Atlantic salmon with citrus butter and mango salsa - 4 stars. The fish was HUGE. Literally, this is the largest piece of salmon I have ever had as a single serving. At home, the size of the salmon I ate is probably what my whole family shares. xD That being said, the fish was well seasoned and tender. I ordered it medium rare and would have liked it to be a bit more rare next time. The mango salsa was meh, and did not complement the fish as much as I would have liked. 4) Veggies: The potatoes au gratin - 5 STARS. DELICIOUS. I normally don't like au gratin stuff because its grease/taste ratio is not high enough but the creaminess and cheese of these potatoes were so good and so well done that I really didn't care about healthiness. XD Green beans with ham and pinenuts - 3 stars. Meh, nothing worth noting. I liked that they had a touch of spiciness, but other than that, a bit on the oily side. 5) Dessert: Flourless chocolate cake - 4.5 stars. This killed me. Literally. It was just so rich and dense that I died eating it. At first, that was a good thing, because I love chocolate. I tried the other desserts too and was very pleased at my choice. However, I really should have stopped at jjust half a slice. But I have a bad habit of finishing off whatever is in front of me so a few moments later, it was all gone, along with the delicious creamy vanilla sauce that came with it. And that's when I knew I would have to be rolled out the door. SO MUCH FOOD. It took me like three hours of lying in bed before I felt it was safe to actually move again. XD Aside from food, service was good. We were in a private room, which made the environment enjoyable. While walking through the main room though, I can definitely understand why there were so many complaints about the level of noise. You can't hear anything - I don't understand how ppl would have conversations. If you are coming with a large enough group, I would definitely recommend getting a private room. The Palm's happy hour specials go until 7PM, which is great if you can't leave work early (or just like a happy hour that lasts more than an hour!). It's half price off of any wine by the glass, and the pours are generous. There is also a half price food menu, but none of the items are too special. The lobster sliders don't have much lobster; the flatbread is served cold (on purpose), and the fried shrimp are pretty unexciting. The crowd is primarily older men who work in neighboring buildings, but they never bother me and my friends. If you're looking to grab a decent glass of wine after work in Tyson's, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

Our waiter was clearly disappointed with our request for tap water at the start of the evening. Our family of 5 dined on a Sunday evening and I did note it was a birthday celebration on the reservation. It should be noted that we did have 2 bottles of wine. We had to beg for water, many times. One time we went and got the pitcher of water ourselves to refill our glasses. When it came time for dessert, I told our waiter it was our son's 28th birthday tomorrow, Monday, and he said his dessert was on the house. I then continued to tell him my birthday was the next day, Tuesday, and the waiter, no lie, said, "Then you come back on Tuesday." The food was good. Not great but good. But. honestly, for $857.00 for a family of 5, this is an expensive meal. I don't want to have to beg for my water to be refilled, ever. Not multiple times. Sorry Palm, there are other restaurants with better service that charge less. And I would have been totally fine with a pitcher of water on my table. THE BOTTOM LINE: 2 1/2 stars. In two words, "Don't bother." Either save some money and go to Clyde's or Maggiano's, or spend the same amount and be blown away by Ruth's Chris (the Arlington location has big windows overlooking the river) or Morton's. THE BACKGROUND INFO: Sometimes I read other people's reviews about fancy or high-end restaurants and they say things like "the lightly seared bacon-wrapped shallot blintzes could have used a little more coriander" or "my servant -- excuse me, server -- only bowed to me nine times." Those reviews always make me roll my eyes and think to myself, "What a d-bag." I'm a level-headed Midwesterner; growing up, we celebrated our major life events at Olive Garden. I never thought that I would be in danger of becoming that snooty Yelper... until now. THE EXPERIENCE: Husband and I went for our wedding anniversary, which we typically celebrate by going to a really nice restaurant and then spending the car ride home saying, "Can you believe some people spend that much on dinner ALL THE TIME?!" So far we've anniversary-ed at Ruth's Chris, Morton's and Obelisk, all of which have felt luxurious and special. The Palm was surprisingly loud and not special, and the service was mediocre. I really liked the bread and wine, Husband said his steak was really good, and the asparagus and my chicken parmigiana were good. The pasta with my chicken parm was lame -- boring grocery store pasta, plain watery marinara sauce, blah. The weirdest part was that our server treated our table like open mic night at a comedy club. I kept expecting him to offer us shrimp shooters or jalapeno poppers, a la Brian the server in Office Space. He checked in mid-meal (nice!) and then disappeared until about 20 minutes after we had finished. Maybe he was working on his material, because when he finally came back he immediately quipped, "Oh hey what's in the bag?!" I was so worn down by that point I just said, "My leftovers; can we please have the check?" (See? I told you I've turned into a d-bag.) When we finally did get the check, it included a $10.45 charge for pasta in addition to the $31 for my chicken parm. (Husband just asked me to include a direct quote from him: "Who serves chicken parm without the pasta?!") When I asked our server about it -- extra politely, because I still felt bad about not humoring his "what's in the bag" joke -- he explained that all dinner items are a la carte... which I wish he'd told me when I was ordering. To his credit, he got the manager right away and she removed the pasta charge from our bill. But what a sad way to end the night -- haggling over $10 for not-delicious pasta, then shelling out $140 for a meal that can best be described as "meh." Go elsewhere. *** UPDATE: Go the the Palm in downtown D.C., on 19th Street NW. Husband and I went there for dinner, and we were both blown away by how much better it was than the Tyson's location. The D.C. restaurant actually feels like a high-end steakhouse, rather than a more dimly lit TGI Friday's. read more

Athmosphere: The tables are very close to each other, especially in the middle of the room, so the atmosphere is very noisy. If you are lucky, you get a waiter who knows what he or she is doing and is confident. If you aren't lucky, you get a waiter who is stuffy. Drinks: The wine's are good as are the cocktails and the selection of hard stuff. No complaints. Food: It's a steakhouse, so steak it is. How good your steak will be largely depends on when you go. Last time we went, one person in my party ordered a well done steak and it had to be redone three times till it came out well done. The first time around it was overcooked, which resulted in an argument with the waitress who insisted that well done steaks need to be just as dry and rubbery as this one came out. The next one was medium, which again resulted in an argument with the waitress who insisted that there is nothing in between those two options. The third one finally came our right, but we all had already finished eating 45 minutes before and were now just watching how the last person in our party was finishing her food. In my mind, at least her food should have been comped, but it wasn't. Executive Summary: If you are lucky, you get a four star experience. If not, you get a two star experience. This place just needs to get a lot more consistent in terms of the cooking and the quality of the wait staff. read more

This place is the most overpriced, trash steakhouse I have ever been to. I ordered a 59 dollar rib eye expecting it to be high quality meat. When the steak arrived at the table it was extremely rare even though I ordered it to be cooked medium. I sent it back and they came back with it still undercooked. The meat was extremely fatty and absolutely terrible quality for a very expensive steak. I could legit go to Outback and get a better steak for 15 dollars. Seriously this place sucks. Whoever the chef is has the competence of a 2 year old. What chef at a well known restaurant can't cook a steak to the right temperature.... I'm not a snobby eater in anyway I just want good flavors. getting seated: The manager/male hostess whatever you want to call him (older, rounder gentleman) took 15 minutes to get us seated even though we had a reservation. A group that came in after us was seated within 2 minutes. I find that ridiculous. When we were seated, there weren't even enough settings for our group of 4. once seated: The waiter greeted us 12 minutes after we were seated and asked us if we wanted wine or water...no he did not give us our menus. After asking for our menus he grabbed the two closests ones and went to find 2 more...I find that quite odd. appetizers? He came back 5 minutes later and told us the specials which we ordered the bacon covered scallops to start. IT SUCKED. OVERCOOKED and I ate sand. bread? Yep, we got that about 10 min after they took away our scallop plate. Yum, stale, hard bread. entree: We ordered: 4 dishes rib-eye (delmonico) which he did not ask if we wanted it in any special way was the only thing mildly cooked right. sea bass nathanial by the waiter's recommendation was packed with a ton of hollandaise sauce..NASTY. OVERPRICED at $53. Atlantic fish company in boston makes a great sea bass for only $35 tops. Daily special-Rigatonni with sausage and meatballs in a red sauce...we figured we would play it safe with the scallops being overcooked. WE WERE WRONG. The pasta was overcooked, the tomato sauce was out of a can, sausage was pure salt and no flavor and the meatballs were the worst meatballs I've ever tasted. Veal Martini (their SIGNATURE DISH SUCKED). If you have the balls to call something your signature dish make sure it tastes decent. It was tasteless. I got tired after 3 bites and sent it back. I requested a salad in it's place. You can't screw up a salad right? wrong. This place is known for their lobster..so lobster cobb it is....IT SUCKED. Once again, I got a dish that was OVERCOOKED, SALTY and overpriced. $33 for a cobb salad is a bit much. desert? We were celebrating 2 birthdays that day..did they offer anything? NO. Did we want to pay for more shit? no. paying the bill? Plan on waiting 15 minutes and then taking the bill up to the manager yourself to pay it. The manager knew of all the complaints we had and did nothing. Actually the cheeky guy had the audacity to say "I hope you enjoyed your meal, have a nice evening". Overall: I wouldn't come back if this was the last place on earth with food. I would rather starve, maybe lick dirt. i'm sure that has more flavor. The waiter was doing his best to try to save the evening and make up for the manager who clearly has no experience and the chefs in the back. The fact that they only had 4 waitors to run the entire restaurant is stupid. If you are going to do that at least group the tables for the waitor. Sure we were going to give the waitor a big tip for his efforts but waiting 15 minutes to pay and having to take the bill up myself deducted his effort for the night. I wanted to leave as fast as I could. This was one of the most painful experiences I've ever had. SAVE YOURSELF and just go to Maggianos down the road or better yet go home and make yourself a bowl of spaghetti i'm sure it'll taste better. read more

So, if I had paid half of what I ended paying I may have stretched myself to give this restaurants a couple of extra stars, but at $100+ per person, I wonder how this place could be this crowded. The quality of the food is comparable to what you get at restaurants that are 4 to 8 times cheaper. Ambiance is the one that one finds in restaurants that are 3 to 6 times cheaper. Some of the tables (the one we were sitting at) are organized in booths, which makes the waiter's life harder and forces patrons to roll up their sleeve and help sending plates and bottles back and forth. I am OK with the extra work in your average moms and pops shop, but not at a place that is supposed to be upscale. Also consider that some of the plates were hot, which introduced some unnecessary excitement to the operation. Did I mention that the menu is overpriced? the shrimps in the cocktail were undercooked. The broccoli were undercooked. Again, I knew that the restaurant would be expensive, but this expensive does not make any sense. Wonder if all the money is going to marketing. Room was small and noisy. Talking to our friends was difficult. In fact we ended up talking to the person next to us with very limited table-wide interaction, which would have been the purpose of the evening. Waitress was doing her best. So no complaint in that area. Well, I actually do. Who designed the uniform of the waiters? They are ugly and oversized. This review applies to the bar. The restaurant itself is very good. I've eaten at the bar and in the restaurant several times. The restaurant is generally excellent, but the bar is a nightmare. It seemed like a good option for my friend and I when we just wanted drinks and apps, but after three tries and three horrible experiences, we won't go back and will likely avoid the restaurant as well based on the way the 'Manager' handled our last situation. I'll spare you the details, but the common themes are: VERY slow service and waiters that think they're being funny but quickly cross the line in to disrespect. On the last occasion, after our waiter disappeared for 20 minutes (literally...we timed him), I shared our concerns with the Manager. He assigned a new waiter who was no better and, after we tracked waiter 2 down following a long absence, our check (which we asked to have split 50/50 on two cards) was split 90/10 and added up to the wrong total. Things happen and go wrong with dinners--I get that, but the mark of a good service establishment is the way they resolve the problem after the fact. The Palm simply falls flat. I agree with other reviewers that, for the price and service, I'd rather go to Capital Grill. read more

Ordered a fifty dollar steak medium rare and got a gamey and undercooked piece of meat with some melted butter that solidified to room temperature. I can do better with a $20 flank steak and an overnight marinade and still feed two people. The waiter did not ask which sauce or sides I wanted. So note for $50, you don't get any sides with your steak. Absolutely pretentious pricing and atmosphere for the standard overpriced "fine dining" experience. Cocktails start at around $12 during happy hour despite using mid-shelf liquors in bog standard recipes. Seems like a place to spend money for the sake of spending money. I am writing this review after communicating directly with the restaurant and receiving an email response 5 days later that took a defensive tone about the underwhelming experience 2 friends and I had on Thanksgiving 2018. While I appreciate your apology it does not make up for the bad experience that happened, mostly concerning service. While I am not interested in a gift certificate or any compensation something should have been offered! My date and I decided to dine here on NYE. We were one of the later tables arriving around 9:30pm and appreciated that the staff wasn't rushing us out the door. Decor and environment was a classic old school steak house vibe, cozy and romantic. We ordered the seared tuna, sea bass and wagyu steak which were all phenomenal. Three stars for a few reasons- service needs improvement The valet driver was strangely rude, didn't say one word to us, just took our keys and drove off. Once seated, we waited 5-7 minutes before the sever took our drink orders and gave us dinner menus. We had two different servers, the reason behind that was unclear, maybe one of them was training. This made simple things like requesting water more complicated as communication was lost between the two and we didn't get our waters until midway through our appetizers. The rest of the night went smoothly until it was time to get our car from valet. It took 15 minutes for him to pull our car up and we later found out that he was sitting in the car, with it RUNNING for God knows how long. I would give the place another try but they should iron out these hiccups, they are small but significant to the overall experience. read more

We were underwhelmed with their Thanksgiving dinner. We had enjoyed their steak dinners before and expected much more. Puree of stuffing; really? Tiny amount of cranberry sauce; really? The Palm is similar to a Mortons or Chris Ruth's or Capitol Grill stake house. However, it's located oddly in a hotel and doesn't have the great 'extra' stuff that makes those other steak houses so great. Love this place! Food is amazing: the Palm showcases awesome ingredients, nice-sized portions, and each dish is beautifully presented. Came here for an anniversary dinner (thanks, babe!) and really enjoyed the atmosphere. We sat in a booth (def. recommend/very cozy!) and each enjoyed our meals very much. We had calamari as an appetizer, I enjoyed the Chilean sea bass (with an awesome glass of Sangiovese), while hubby enjoyed the steak sandwich with some craft beer. Very filling, very delicious! Side note: my sister had made the reservation for us ahead of time; Tim, one of the maitre d's with whom she talked, was kind enough to offer a lot of info, explain the dress code as well as have the staff include a little note for me and the hubby congratulating us on our anniversary. We tried the lobster dinner for two at $79.95. The highlight was the lobster itself. It was tasty and cooked well. The downside was that they split it for us and I have never seen so much tomalley in a lobster in my life. It oozed a lava flow of green goo. Now, I know there are those for whom that would be a good thing. I am not one of them. If you get a whole lobster, you don't need to deal with the tomalley if you don't want to: lop off the tail, clean off the end of the tail meat and forget the body. It was the single most unappetizing plate of food I have ever been served. I asked the waiter to immediately take the body away. So: what could the restaurant have done? I suppose they could have said, before they served it, that there was a lot of tomalley and asked if we wanted it. In my family only one in 10 people eat it, so I don't think I'm alone. Other disappointments: my husband's fries were cold, my side dish was barely heated up and the caesar salad was tasteless. The experience was absolutly horrid. Ordered the "Monday Night Salad" that was a complete disaster with mashed vegetables and not sure what else was in it. The "Chicken Parmigiana" was a combination of canned tomato sauce, limp chicken breasts and a glop of awful cheese on top of it. The hamburger was so so but the fries were tasteless (can't imagine a steak restaurant that cannot even do fries right). Suggest you avoid this restaurant completely. Went there on 7pm on a Thursday to celebrate our 26th Anniversary. They acknowledged the anniversary and places us at a corner table in the back. Even then the place was noisy and it was hard to hear each other, let alone have a romantic dinner. I had the 9 oz filet with crab, hollandaise, and asparagus. Crab was cold and filet seemed a little small. Server brought warm crab. Taste was good but not worth the cost. My wife had the sea bass special with crab and shrimp. Very good but a touch salty. a group of us were taking a steak loving friend out for his birthday so even though I don't eat meat or fowl I went along. I do eat fish and knew there would be 3-4 options on the menu. I started with a $13 Caesar salad (shared with my wife) which was very generic and forgettable. I then had the $37 salmon for my main course and it too was fine but nothing special. Tastiest thing I ate all night was the asparagus - perfectly cooked. But who goes out and spends top $ for good asparagus? Service was very good - attentive, friendly wait staff. I had heard about the Palm for years and wanted to go but the time was never right for whatever reason. Then the time was right and we went and had one of the best dinners ever. I started out not all that impressed with the political and celebrity characters painted on the walls as I didn't really expect it. but my eyes adjusted and they became more cute than kitsch. The is supposed to be what really matters and that was on the up and up, bus ride straight to nirvana. My dinner companion suggested we split a "medium" 36 ounce New York Strip, knowing that I like a little texture to my steak. Great choice. It came on a beautiful simple plate like Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby. Medium was absolutely medium. No raw meat and no rawhide. That is 36 ounces prepared to perfection. The skipped the apps as we were ordering a Mombo hunk-o-meat. Sides were good but not excellent. Service was also very good, if not a little snooty. We chalked that up to the individual being a an older gentlemen and not very warm. We will absolutely go back and it will be difficult to try a different main course. read more

A girlfriend and I decided to give this place a try on a Sunday evening around 8pm because we had nothing better to do. The place had a moderate crowd of stuffy and buttoned up middle-aged couples on what appeared to be double dates as well as two families. One family was a female adult, male adult and three young children. Mommy was dressed inappropriately in an incredibly revealing sequined number with her plastic bazooms nearly falling out. What didn't help is that this family seemed to have a date with the bathroom, outside, anywhere but their table and continually walked around the facility. The floor space of this restaurant is minimal and their behavior was distracting and unnecessary. No one said anything... The other family held the only under 30 men in the place and it was clearly a birthday celebration. I would not recommend this place for anyone under 40. Absolutely no frills, terrible ball park style wallpaper with unappealing charicatures... Not at all what I envisioned for my first trip to the palm. Also, when the manager is "pulling out your chair" in a booth, he slides the table in one direction to make room. Once the first person is on the booth, the table is slid towards the seated person to allow the other to settle. What is this? Nothing short of a joke. When my friend and I arrived, we were greeted cooly and escorted to our table. The first table was too small. The second table was too large, but we settled because the lighting was more comfortable and we believed the new table to be a bit more airy. BOY WERE WE WRONG! The place was so hot and humid that my girlfriend who was wearing a thin summer dress was sweating. SWEATING! She had a cocktail, but it couldn't be helped. We mentioned this to the server who was apologetic and mentioned that he was warm as well and would consult the manager. Later we received an offer to move to the bar, which we accepted because it was a bit cooler .. mainly because it was empty and poorly lit. The bar was silent (Crickets) with exception to the Host/Manager who looked homely in a bar stool and seemed more interested in staring disapprovingly at the bartender than doing his job. The bartender was loud and obnoxious. Completely unimpressed. When we moved to the bar, the manager offered to comp our next round of drinks. My friend and I had already had one. We weren't interested in anymore drinks. He then went on to mention that they had "ice cream" for dessert, but no mention was made that this would be on the house. GREAT! We're sweating in your sauna of an establishment and all you can do is laugh and give us the opportunity to buy ice cream? It was so ridiculous it seemed comical. Maybe it was a ploy? Make the environment so hot and uncomfortable everyone is forced to spend on drinks and ice cream. The server was nice. The food was.. blah. The before dinner rolls were quite tasty. I'd venture to say they were better than anything my friend and I ordered.. My friend had the lobster bisque which had an overwhelming fishy taste( Lobster bisque? Maybe seafood bisque? it didn't have ANY lobster pieces in it.. NONE! Disappointing and uninspired at best. I've had better at Mike's American Grill.. no kidding). I had the scallops wrapped in bacon for a starter and they were "okay," but incredibly greasy, the bacon of poor quality and the 5 pieces of iceberg lettuce that was meant to garnish the plate just looked sad. I had the crabcakes and I have to say they were good for broiled crabcakes, but nothing spectacular and certainly not worth the price. The topping of fruit(maybe mango? maybe pineapple) and peppers was boring and tasteless. My friend ordered the clam linguine and ate three bites before we decided we wanted to leave. She didn't think the clam linguine was worth taking home. $35 for three bites of pasta. If it had been up to me, I wouldn't have paid for this meal. After the ordeal that was dinner, we just wanted out and we wanted out fast. We paid and left promptly. The Manager gave us an unapologetic and empty "I hope you enjoyed your meal" as we left. It was nearly insulting. For the server, the rolls/bread and the crabcakes.. 1 stars. For everything else - 100 stars? I've never been so unhappy with an experience in my life. Beyond disappointing. I would not be honest if I said I liked the food here. My wife and I decided to visit here on our Anniversary. The food in general was average at best when compared to similar restaurants. The high price did not match the food - I am not saying the food was not edible but under all the presentation, the food was generally tasteless. I will not be visiting here again. It appears this is a haunt for business lunches where customers talk more than actually enjoy the food...!!! read more

Meh, it's ok. Pretentious people who drive expensive cars and have blend taste for steak, that's about all. Great if you're over 50 with dead taste pallets, not so great if you're younger crowd and want something with rich flavors. read more

We came here for our anniversary because we usually like The Palm. We ordered the double steak and ordered medium. It took a while to come, and when we cut into it it was practically raw. We sent it back. After another 20 minutes it came back cooked better on the outside, but again when it was cut into, it was still so rare that we couldn't eat it. Our server suggested that we just order normal strip steaks, so we did, again requested to be medium. 20 minutes later they came--one was cooked medium, but the other rare!! We had been here already for 1.5 hours--our bottle of wine was finished, we had eaten enough mashed potatoes to be completely full, and we just got the steaks which were still not as we wanted. We have never been in a steak house so long and had so many things go wrong! At the end the manager came over and said that dessert was on him--we weren't interested.
