I've always had to wait awhile for my food, but the food is always good. I like to do take out bc it's cold in the restaurant to me.

One of my favorite Philly Cheese Steak spots in SLC. But it's only thing I get there, and I always do it to go. Definitely a hole in the wall type of place but there's a reason why the line is always long. My dad and I have been coming here for years, and on occasion make a bigger order to bring phillys to work for our coworkers. We always get the philly cheese steak with hot peppers and mushrooms. It's not the cleanest looking place, and the service isn't the best. The fries and onion rings are usually bland. Either the oil needs to be changed or they need to be seasoned more. When you enter The Philadelphian, take a look around. Examine the finely tinted ceiling tiles. The floor is custom built to match whatever has been eaten at that place for the last few years. It's a site to behold. Okay, okay, it looks sketchy. Try to look past it. This is a no-nonsense, in-your-face steak sandwich shop. They're huge, cheap, and delicious. I usually get their signature sandwich, 8" (which is a small), and it's stuffed. Avoid the lunch rush by any means necessary. Around lunch time, the line goes out the door and you can expect a 30-45 min. wait AFTER ordering your food. If you have the time, take the time because they're really good. Also, try to eat it fast. This place is absolutely filthy. Almost all of the employees look like they are suicidal. There is often almost no sound in the diner whatsoever, making everything incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. If you wear clothes that absorb scents, rest assured that you won't want to wear it anymore after visiting here. Really, there is nothing pleasant about the ambiance here. That being said, the sandwiches here are great. The fries and onion rings probably aren't worth getting, but that's okay. The sandwiches more than make up for that. They're cheap and the serving size is very generous. I will agree with every other review about how filthy this place is. However, that is the only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars. The Philadelphian is located in the nastiest location you can imagine. One you step foot in this strip mall sandwich joint, you'll smell like grease the rest of the day and wonder if they've ever cleaned the place in the many years they've been in business. But if you can look past a dirty environment (workers included), then you won't be disappointed. These sandwiches are a little piece of heaven. Everyone I take there loves the food. I highly recommend the hot sandwiches. More specifically I recommend the Hot Combo (steak, pastrami and hot pepper relish) and of course the Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches. They also have fresh fries, onion rings and even battered and fried mushrooms. You'll be surprised how far your money will go and how large the portions are. This is one of my favorite go tos for cheap eats. Their philly cheesesteaks are excellent and come loaded with meat and cheese. They are huge considering the price of under $10. I will fair warn you. The place is a dive. The first time I went I was grossed out. I only stayed because it was so highly recommended by friends. The staff is also not the greatest. If you can get past those two things though the food is again phenomenal for the price. They also serve hand battered fried mushrooms and onion rings that are incredibly delectable. I recommend both. I'm not a huge fan of their french fries so I usually stick to those other two options. So to sum up. Great food. Reasonable price. Dumpy location. Poor service. read more

I'm shocked again by the glowing reviews. I'm shocked that Moochies still hasn't choked out the Philadelphian and put them down for good. This place is the definition of grease pit...but the bad grease. Wilted peppers and a grease drenched bun. The steak is literally chopped low-grade luncheon meat like chopped Arby's "roast beef" (as another reviewer accurately states), or like Sling Blade's "potted meat" in a can, MRE-style. Observe the 1/2" layer of grease covering every surface; walls, ceiling, windows, etc. Don't think for a second that you will not drop dead from a heart attack after taking one step in their front door. I don't think anyone has ever eaten a real cheese steak, or has eaten anywhere aside from Arby's who posts these raving reviews? I would almost bet my life that the owner is from West of the Mississippi, and probably Sandy, UT. I would venture to say they've never stepped foot in Philadelphia. I had heard great things so decided to give it a try. Had the most popular Philadelphian Steak sandwich that was suppose to have mushrooms and onions with provolone cheese. There was so much meat, which may be good for some people, but it was salty and I couldn't find an onion and because of the amount of meat, the cheese was practically undetectable. We also got the Krab sandwich which was good. The onion rings were F minus!! There was so much soggy batter (and we ate them in the car) that by the time I took it all off, my bag still weighed a pound! I'm not a fan of The Philadelphian and my husband that is a huge steak sandwich fan says there are better places in the valley! read more

The stars are for the food only. I really wish they would move to a nice clean place because their sandwiches are the best! The staff is friendly and the sandwiches are reasonable for all 3 sizes. Fresh cut fries could be cooked a little longer, but their small size is big enough for 3 people. However, the place is old and doesn't look clean. Get ready for a serious gut buster! If you like hole in the walls, like you joke when you walk in if this place passes health codes type hole in the wall. Then come eat here because you will leave happy. Obviously with the name your going to get the Philly. Unless you frequently do eating competitions or you plan to split, go with less than the 12" (they should call it the 12lb). The menu should read: side effects include MANDATORY siesta. I give this place five stars for their food and prices. Their food is great and super cheap and big. I like the sandwiches with everything. Their fries are good, the oil seems a little old but it really just gives it more flavor. Their onion rings aren't my favorite, it's kind of like a donut with an onion in the middle. I have a reason for the harsh rating. I went in for lunch and did not have a very pleasant experience. Don't get me wrong! The service and speed was great. And the sandwich I ordered looked and tasted fantastic. But as I was eating, I found a tiny piece of paper in the sandwich. Ok, no big deal. Maybe it was part of the paper the meat was wrapped up in. I picked it out and continued eating. But then I found a short black hair (about an inch long) in my sandwich. I had to stop eating after that. I was on a date and felt too embarrassed to let the owner, who was sitting at a nearby table, know what happened. Once my date finished eating, we got up to leave. As I grabbed my coat from my chair, I noticed a cockroach sitting on the wall less than a foot away from me. It looked like it was dead, but it was still disgusting that I was even eating near that thing. I don't want to condemn this place based on my sole experience, as I'm sure other people have had pleasant experiences. And the food really was very good. But I wanted to write this review in hopes that the owner will see this and that this won't ever happen to anyone else. read more

There is one amazing thing about The Philadelphian and it's the fact that I saw a handful of patrons actually dining here. The Philadelphian missed more than a few marks across the board: 1. The beef in my Philly cheesesteak sandwich was NOT hot at all. Not to mention, no flavors. 2. Fries were dripping with oil and soggy. 3. Fry sauce was bland. 4. The restroom was dirty. It smelled and the trash can was overflowing with used hand towels. 5. The staff are condescendingly rude. If I were a secret food inspector, I would have had a great time coming down hard on The Philadelphian, but unfortunately I am not, so my experience here can be summed up terrible and unpleasant. I have been coming to this dive for years. I always get the steak sandwich with bell peppers and mushrooms and tomatoes. Bright colors let's me know the veggies are fresh. The six inch is so full of fresh chopped steak no need to order the large . So delicious. Thick cut fries. The half order is plenty. The onion rings are odd but good. Like donuts with onion inside. Great price for a big 12" cheese steak with almost 1 lb of meat, not a fan of the breading they used altho. The English fries were awesome, I would highly recommend getting a side. The wait time during noon is horrible. Hopefully next time they would be okay with me bringing my own french bread that actually crisp and crunch when you bite down into it, their bread is too soft and small to fit so much meat. The place looks like they just threw it together in a hurry to open for business. At least get nice furniture for your cuatomers. Yes, this place is downright dirty, the true definition of "hole in the wall." But you can't deny that they make great sandwiches. I've been going here for years, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon! While I don't recommend the onion rings and fried mushrooms, their fries are home made and are good. Not great, just good. The staff is always friendly when I'm there (always at lunch, never been any other time), but you WILL have a wait, and it WILL take a while to get your food. All that said, their sandwiches are great and if you go for anything over a 6-incher, you'll end up in a food coma the rest of the day. Only eat here if you can follow it up with a nap. I'll have to say I've had better Phili sandwiches in my life but I'm giving them 3 is because I actually like their dipping sauce (french dip) I'm a sandwich gal and the portion they give you here is pretty big and filling but flavor wise ehhhh its ok to me I feel like all the sandwich on the menu would all taste the same except their bbq just by the looks of it (no offense). I tried the Philadelphian cheesesteak and it was average, although I didn't think it tasted much like actual Philly cheesesteaks. The meat was tender but it lacked cheese and other toppings us has peppers (it came with grilled onions). It did take quite a while to get the food but I think we went during a peak hour (Saturday night). We also got fries which were pretty average, nothing special. This place is worth a try, I haven't tried a ton of cheesesteaks in the Salt Lake area but I'd probably try other places before going back here. read more

So your asking yourself if the Philadelphian is right for you? Simply put, there is no right answer to this question. The Philadelphian is like that one woman you know you shouldn't see but keep coming back cause no one does it quite like her. Come in, sit down and don't let your eyes deceive you. The place looks like it should have fallen apart in the late 90's. Use the restroom at home before you come in because having to use theirs is a battle of epic proportions you don't want to find yourself fighting. The place is cleaner now than it has been in the past but lets just say $10k in renovations and an interior decorator could do the place some good. Once you get past the decor you have nothing to lose when you realize $20 feeds a small family. Don't get carried away and think you can handle the large fry by yourself because its a battle you will not win one large is enough for three or four adults. Even the small fry is enough to put an NFL linebacker into cardiac arrest. And don't forget to grab your own self serve bottle of fry sauce to smother every single bite you take of their thick fresh cut fries. Every sandwich is to die for. They overflow every bite with well seasoned meat, veggies and whatever else your heart desires. The staff is neither friendly or rude but they are damn good at what they do. You will find yourself talking about the Philadelphian to all your coworkers and friends for months. Tried this place for the first time today because I'd heard it was good and they're open on Sunday. I ordered an 8" cheesesteak with fried onions and asked for no other toppings. We also shared an order of onion rings. I knew as soon as my steak arrived that something was wrong because it wasn't the eight kind of beef for a cheesesteak and some of the pieces were quite large rather. My sandwich was SO dry and also SO salty. There was ZERO grease from the meat (bc they use the wrong cut) and it felt like I was eating glue bc it was so dry. I also only had literally four pieces of chopped fried onion on my entire sandwich. Meanwhile, the onion rings were completely unsalted and bland and have so much batter on them it was like eating a piece of plain white bread. I threw away more than half of my sandwich and all but 2 onion rings. No idea who considers this to be an authentic cheesesteak place, but it is most certainly not at all. I'm from the Philly area and will be sticking with DP cheesesteaks from here on out. read more

The fries are fresh cut but the place is a total dive. Really I can't seem to figure out how they stay open but the food 90% of the time is great. I say 90% because every so often it is not any good. Don't plan on eating there as it is somewhere out of the movies, not very clean, a good solid coat of grease gently layers itself over everything including you when you leave its not just a meal you get filled up on the rest of the day it's a meal you get smelly from the rest of the day. Don't eat there, call ahead and get it to go and just to be safe if it's your first time wait outside. For many years this has been one of our favorite places to get Philly Steak Sandwiches. However, I guess we may soon be crossing it off our list. We have tried it twice in the past month. Once, since I was coming across town from West Valley, I tried calling along the way to order ahead. No one answered the phone. I kept driving in that direction and tried to call a couple more times. Nothing. When I got there, a sign on the wall said, "We are out of steak". I don't know how this happens to an eatery that specializes is steak sandwiches. This past Friday I called early in the day to make sure they had steak and I was assured that they did. I'm sad to say though that although the employees are great, the steak was of quite a bit lower quality than it has been in the past. Our sandwiches were rubbery and gristley. Maybe this is just an anomaly and it will be better soon. I hope so. I will only make the journey across town one more time to give them a chance at producing the kind of quality we have had in past years, and if not, then there are other places to go that have good philly cheesesteaks. read more

This place did not meet my expectations. Their bread was stale and they had thick pieces of pure fat in the cheese steak they served me. Their sandwiches do not have a lot of flavor. Their onion rings were soggy and had enough grease on them I could squeeze them and they would drip oil. The building is very dirty and had me concerned about the sanitation of the surfaces they were preparing my meal on. I admit this place isn't any white glove sit down joint, but the food makes up for it. The sandwiches are great tasting with a great price. I had the 6 inch combo that filled me up, but maybe because I couldn't get my fill of the sides. The tender beef with the great bread was the perfect combo. The English chips are by far are the most addicting. I was full and kept picking on them. The fries were great too. Let's not forget about the deep fried mac-n-cheese bites. I deducted 1 star for decor/bathroom. .5 for staff. .5 for using roast beef instead of steak. Also Small drink is a 12oz paper cup which they charge $2 for. Portions are large. I got the 8oz Cheesesteak - and it was PACKED! I am guessing roast beef is cheaper than steak given that is what they use. Small fry is also HUGE. Easily enough for 2 or 3 people. Moved 10' to other side of front desk, by 1 person waiting in line. When that person told them coke was out, he also asked where he should wait. Cashier told him, right there (same place I wanted to sit). Was asked what I wanted. Explained I was just waiting for someone. Was told I needed to wait outside. It was 35F outside. There was 1 person waiting on a drink and one table occupied way in the back. But I was told I needed to wait outside for someone? Went back in to explain I'd be eating someplace else due to service. Call in orders works just fine. If they write down what you ordered correctly. We ordered and picked up our order. It was done fast and they brought it out to the car. We got home and and noticed that one of the sandwiches was not what we ordered. We called and they offered to remake our sandwich. My wife went down again and Frankie decided to accuse my wife of or lieing about what was ordered. They brought her to tears yelling at her and telling her she was wrong. Almost 30 minutes later they brought out a new sandwiche. We will NEVER eat here again. Thanks to Frankie and his piss poor attitude I will encourage everyone I know to not eat here as well. This place is THE BEST! Their veggie sub is my favorite veggie sub. My husband loves the pepper steak. Their "small" fry is GINORMOUS! The employees have outstanding social skills, which are rare in customer service positions. I enjoy talking to the friendly employees as much as I enjoy their food.
