This place was probably one of the biggest disappointments I've had in Utah. I'll start with the appearance. It was incredibly filthy, the floor was stained with grease and that's no surprise because walking in you're decked in the face with ollllld fryer grease smell. Ordering my fried mushrooms and English chips confirmed this. The bread of very soft but more so doughy than anything. I ordered the hot combo and a small meatball and both very lackluster. The meatball sub didn't even melt cheese and I think a light toasting of the roll would helped it not be a mess. The Phili meat was bland and I couldn't tell there was cheese on it. The toppings fell off on first bite. Finally... the staff. The least inviting and personable bunch I've been faced with ordering from. I don't think anybody smiled both patrons and employees. I think the staff made it uncomfortable because they were trying to vacuum and close an hour before close and we were screwing it up for them. So, we got a monotone response and sighs as did those following us. They wouldn't acknowledge you from clear across the restaurant until the kid got to the register and took his head phones out to basically ask, "what the f*** do you want?" read more

For a place that is considered "ghetto" for Utah, they sure make some amazing sandwiches. Mike C is absolutely correct when he says you have to look past the dirty environment, including the cooking equipment dripping with grease and oil. If it is your first time going to the Philadelphian, the Hot Combo is by far the most delicious sandwich you can eat there. Their fried mushrooms (which my wife and I call fried rats because of the way they look) are also extremely tasty. Just make sure that you call the order in before you go, because they can take upwards of 30 minutes to get your sandwich done. Just don't call in if you do not know what you want, they'll give you an ear full or just hang up on you. read more

I had high hopes for the deep fried mushrooms and onion rings, so I ordered them with one of their sandwiches. Big, big disappointment. Literally 2/3 of everything I ate that was coated in heavy battering buried the taste of the mushrooms and onions. Heavy on the grease. I love this place and order here often. Today I went to get an order for pick up and left and I found they later added a $5 tip to the transaction when I did not authorize it. I called the store and the manager was extremely rude and said that there was nothing he was willing to do if I did not bring in my bank statement. I do not live close so for me to go on the weekend when I'm not at work is not a quick drive. The store was refusing to refund the over charges leaving me only the option to dispute it with my bank. I will never order here again and I will make sure that I spread the word about how dishonest and disgusting the manager and staff are. read more

I was there years ago and I wasn't impressed, I think I had a run in with the owner that time and was not impressed by the way they dress up the Cheese Steaks. At that time they added lettuce and tomato and anyone from Philly knows that is not authentic at all. But someone I work with lives down the street and keeps telling me it's better, still a dive in terms of cleanliness, but much better food and service. So I took him for his word and walked in for lunch today expecting a bit more. First of all, the tall lanky guy at the register called be "bud", which isn't my name and not super professional to call a customer unless you have a great deal of familiarity with them. Second, he asked me what type of Cheese Steak I wanted, so i told him no tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, but substitute with a special request with marinara and pepperoni's which DP Cheesesteak, Moochies and every Cheesesteak location in Philly would give you without a hesitation. He said his cook wouldn't do it because it made the grill too greasy?? (SAY WHAT!!!??) Beef and cheese make the grill greasy!!!! Then of course he said, "Sorry bud" and when I shared my displeasure just shrugged his shoulders. It was at lunch, but only 4 tables were in use so it's not like they were too busy. Food quality, french fries were disgusting, soggy greasy, obviously they have no clue how to fry crispy fries. Cheese Steak was the only good part of the experience, bun was average, meat was decent. There are so many better choices then this location. Owner won't change for anyone from what I can tell, he must get enough business to not change. Unless this place is ever fined by the health inspector I don't imagine anything changing. read more

Forget the decor unless you are some interior decorator. Want a satisfying sandwich better than the same in Philadelphia? Then this is the place. They use provolone cheese rather than that "cheese whiz" stuff. The cheese makes the difference. They pile up the beef and put hot peppers on it. They use soft sandwich rolls, which sandwich aficionados know is better than hard rolls when you bite into it and the crumbs fly everywhere. The 12" is a man-sized sandwich which will fill you up. Skip the restaurant chains and enjoy this one of a kind place. Order takeout and enjoy the game on TV. Leave your delicate sensibilities at home and bring your appetite. Just avoid the fried food. This is the greasiest of greasy spoons in the whole valley (maybe even the whole world...exaggeration? Maybe, maybe not. There's only one way for you to find out). I am not going to lie, part of what makes this place...well, this place, is the absolutely divey atmosphere. They've had the same tables, chairs, and pictures of their adorable grandchildren on the wall for years (and probably the same fry oil too) and It is a guilty, guilty pleasure of mine. One surprising favorite choice from the menu, besides the obvious choice of a steak sandwich, is their burger. I smother mine in their house made fry sauce...it may end up more fry sauce than burger, but it's amazing. read more

Well this place has been around for over 15 years in Sandy. How its past the health department standards year after year is beyond me, but even though they aren't the cleanest looking place by any stretch of the word in town, from before walking into the place when you see the path outside on the cement of grease from people tracking it in and out to after you walk in and look around at the grease packed carpeting, or the fully open kitchen that looks like its never seen so much as a bucket of water & a sponge, this place definitely could use a week long clean up, but as long as you either order Togo or don't pay attention to it all their food is second to none. I always get the same thing when i go, the 8 inch American Meats substitute the cheddar cheese for provolone and add tons of sliced pickles, it comes packed with Ham, Bologna, & Salami and when i say packed i am not using that term lightly because there is probably at least 1LB of meat on an 8 inch sub they don't skimp like everywhere else does that either weighs their meat like Arby's, Quiznos & Blimpie or Counts each slice out like Subway & others no they just add it on till literally they cant wrap it anymore that's well over the top of the sub by about half then they pry it open & stuff shredded provolone into the sides of it then all over on top then the pickles somehow get stuffed into the sides & on top too and after all that they manage to wrap it up in a double layer of wax paper to hold it all in if your taking it home, beware when opening its like its spring loaded & your going to have a hard time if you think that your going to keep all of that in the huge sub bun while you eat it, then i get their delicious greasy fries that are like a staple, i think the reason they are so good is that they don't change their grease that I've ever seen and there all fresh cut in store thick when you order a small don't expect a small cuz it'll be about 4 full size potatoes worth and get some of their homemade delectable fry sauce that is more to the mayonnaise side than the ketchup and you have yourself the perfect meal that will fill you up for a good long time. I usually get it to go and when i pick it up its all in a brown paper bag and even though the sub is double wrapped in wax paper and the fries are triple wrapped and you watch them put it into the bag 5 feet away from you, by the time the walk the 5 feet to hand you the bag you can already see grease seeping through the side of the bag and that's how you know its going to be good and that its from the Philadelphian. If you usually get a foot long from other sub shops don't think you can down a 12 inch here by any means cuz you'll get their foot-long but you wont be able to eat it all unless you have a massive appetite. Oh did i mention when i order all of that the 8 inch sub, the fry, & a large drink i get it all for about $10, now if your looking for the same comparison as a $5 foot-long or a $5.00 6 Inch meal then i suggest you get their 4 inch sub hot or cold with chips and a medium drink and they'll be around the same price but it will probably still be more food than you usually get. To sum it all up, If you can ignore the surrounding you wont be let down by the food or the price, they don't skimp on anything they don't charge you extra for extra cheese, toppings, or anything else unless of course you where to ask for extra meat which I've never done cuz I'm usually taking some off to share with my dog cuz i cant eat that much but even that I'm not entirely sure they'll charge for. I try and limit my eating their to no more than about once every two weeks or so cuz after you eat their you'll feel full for about that long and it kinda sticks to you. If you've never been their GO try it because my belief is that when a restaurant is dirty like that it just means they pay more attention to providing you with the best tasting food possible unless of course you see things moving on the ground then that's just going over the line. But the Philadelphian is the perfect mix of dirty and perfectly tasting food. I challenge anyone to find a better tasting, more loaded, filling sub anywhere around for anywhere near that price..... read more

This was my second time eating here and will be my last. The first time was pretty bad, but we figured it might have been a bad night. We were in the area today and decided to try again. I ate half my sandwich (the cheese was horrible), ate one onion ring, a few fries and was done. The services was slow, the building and tables were dirty and the smell was horrible. I finally left to sit outside while my finance finished his meal. I will say the portion sizes are huge and it has a huge fan following. I would like to review this store solely on their food but I feel like I would not be giving this place its full service. When I went to the Philadelphian I was amazed at the many smells that were emanating from the establishment and I was also astonished with the mine field that is the floor. You really have to watch were you step. The thing that is most amazing about this place is the restrooms. If you are afraid to go into the restroom, you are not alone many people would not even let such a thought cross their mind and would feel the need to repent after entering the restrooms. But its time that you become a man and put your pants on like a man, two legs at a time and take a walk into the unknown like Chuck Norris. When you walk into the restrooms first fight the urge not to run out screaming, for if you do you will miss out on an opportunity that many do not have in this life. If you walk in and flush the toilet once, pause 1.6 seconds and flush it again and then spin around and flush the toilet again a portal or gateway to the past will open up inside the toilet bowl. If you step into the toilet bowl you will be transported to a land before time. Remember you have to follow the steps exact or you will step into a toilet bowl that as not been cleaned since Clinton was in the oval office. How did I end up back on the east coast? This place nails it for me. I ended up getting their flagship Philadelphian with cheese, peppers. tomatoes, and lettuce (6 inch) and yes it was greasy, but so very tasty. The hoagie rolls were also very moist and just what I would expect on a cheese steak. Also be sure to get the fried mac n cheese and the fried mushroom. You might be hitting the gym the rest of the week to work of those calories but certainly well worth it. read more

I grew up in L.A. and I can tell you that some of the best places to eat are total dumps that no one would dare go into unless you are a local and know that the food outweighs the decor. The food is ok, definitely not the best sandwich you can get, the portions are large though. The restaurant itself is pretty disgusting, you'll be questioning if it actually meets health codes. The staff however are the worst part of this place. They are rude and all the times I've been there I am always disappointed with them. Worst part of this place the old slob with the glasses with no gloves ever touching money, wiping down tables, phone, etc... never washed hands and was handling and slicing up the meat. My favorite place for Philly cheesesteaks. I like that the sandwiches are packed with meat, but the flavors aren't overwhelming. The hot peppers are awesome! I can't handle too much heat so I get the peppers on the side, but they really make the sandwich. I also tried their onion rings, which are really good. They will definitely fill you up, so be careful. Fries and fry sauce are also great. My husband got the French dip, which was really good, but we both wished the bread was crispier. read more
