Love this spot! I've been a few times (mainly for the live music). The food and drinks are ok, but the place is definitely a vibe. The performers are listed online which is nice. It does get pretty packed on the weekends, so early arrival is suggested in terms of seating.

Location: Downtown Kansas city MO Ambiance: bar restaurante, Jazz vibe. They offer live music several times a week. We went for brunch on a Sunday with live music Food: Amazing. I was expecting more bar quality food, I was surprised when they brought to our table this high-quality, well executed dishes. I highly recommend the skillet or the crab cake. Service: The best I've ever had in Kansas City. When I got there with my family, they were having a farewell celebration for the bartender that was leaving to California. One gentleman from the restaurant gave my mom a beautiful flower arrangement The server was always smiling and helpful. They brought us cake from the farewell event. The musicians were also smiling all the time and hi 5 us on our way to the exit. Yelp factor: This is the place to go if you are looking to experience Kansas City vibe, Food and music. I can't wait to go back there

TL;DR: If you love live music, especially 80s/90s and jazz, come by the Phoenix. Would highly recommend for fans of Green Lady looking for some place to grab a bite earlier in the day. The drinks are decent, the prices are reasonable, the portions are good, and the atmosphere makes up for everything else. The Phoenix is a bit off the beaten path and less well-known than Green Lady and Black Dolphin, but it has a strong history in Kansas City (it served illegal alcohol during the Prohibition) and still has a long list of regulars. This bar feels like a neighborhood joint but is very welcoming to newcomers. DRINKS I tend to get their cocktails--if you're looking for a lighter cocktail like I am, I'd recommend the Ride the Wave and Am I the Asshole. Ride the Wave tastes mostly like ginger beer, and Am I the Asshole is a lot of vanilla with notes of lemon and blueberry. They also have a solid pick of anything else you may be looking for. FOOD This is your standard bar fare. I've heard better things about the Phoenix's brunch, but don't come expecting anything outstanding. I would recommend the spin(ach) dip and get it with a side of fries. The fries aren't listed as their own side on the menu, but just ask the staff and they're super accommodating. MUSIC My friends and I came earlier in the evening and got to see Talya and her Boyfriends, who put on an amazing show. We loved the time here and will definitely be back!

Not your average eatery! The quality of the food certainly surpassed my expectations. The live jazz and classics was a definite plus. Generally speaking, I would have lowered my expectations for "bar food" but was pleasantly surprised when the work of art was served. The servers made us feel welcome and ensured that we received the attention we deserved. For the full experience recommend scheduling a visit during a weekend~enjoy!

These biscuits are stacked so high and loaded so heavy, you'll need a game plan, a fork, and maybe a pep talk from your server (who, by the way, is probably the nicest person you've ever met before 10 a.m.). Let's start with the Bloody Marys--absolute perfection. Spicy, savory, and went down easy! Pair that with the fact that my biscuit sandwich came out looking like a Jenga tower of delicious chaos, and I knew I was in for something special. The first bite? Fireworks. The last bite? A fork fight at the table over the remaining crumbs. One of my sandwiches came dripping with sauce like it was starring in its own Food Network slow-mo reel. The other was a crunchy, tangy, biscuit-lovin' masterpiece stacked with perfectly fried chicken, cabbage slaw, and dreams. This place is not for the faint of appetite. You will leave full. You will need a nap. And you will already be planning your next visit before you even finish your drink. 10/10. Bring your hunger, your friends, and stretchy pants.

I also got a breakfast burrito (not gf) the second morning, which was delicious + had great heat. The coffee here was also amazing, although I opted for very basic oat milk lattes each morning. My husband got a maple tahini latte one morning + a smoked something or other on the other morning we went. My husband + son got croissants both mornings and loved them, but they also had some seriously cute rainbow donuts on display, which I was a bit shocked that my five year old passed by. The baristas were all very friendly and helpful, which I appreciated + the space was great with an open kitchen concept/plenty of seating. This seems like a great spot to work from, although they also had a wonderful (windy) rooftop to sit on also.. that looked like it had a fireplace for chillier days- so cozy. Best coffee in KC.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.

A few months ago my sister and I hosted a baby shower for our other sister and after looking around an options we decided to go with McLains. It was a smaller group, and we were doing a brunch theme, and our sister LOVES sweets. That paired with our desire to support local, and our shared love of McLains, this was just the most obvious choice. We ended up ordering a cake and first of all I have to say their cake flavor choices are insane - I think we settled on a chocolate cake with peanut butter filling (YUM), but I don't think you can go wrong here. We also ordered one of their pre-set pastry bundles for pick up and honestly everything was wonderful. I think I placed the order about a week out and it was ready when I came to pick it up. What pushed this experience into five star category for me? Just the friendliness of the staff, the serving tools they send you home with, and how thoughtful everyone was. The food was also really just exactly what we needed and it was so good there were hardly any leftovers, I think the kids cleared us out by lunch! At any rate, if you're on the hunt for a great spot to support for your next brunch event consider McLains - they won't let you down!

Seating might be full, but there's both counter seating in the open concept kitchen or tables on the other side. A lot of people rave about their breakfast burritos or breakfast biscuit sandwiches. My out of town guests love them too when I bring them here. I'm here to rave about their weekend only croissants. You can only get them on Saturday or Sunday because it takes a days to ferment and laminate the dough. The quality of their ingredients shines in even the simplest plain croissant. I'll occasionally venture into the chocolate or almond version. They rival some of the best I've had in NYC, SF or Paris. In KC, the only other rivals can be found at French Market or Sour Rabbit Bakery. I'm glad their croissants are weekend only so I can have them as an occasional treat. I find their other pastries, especially the tarts, biscuits or scones are also lovely. For a baked goods focused spot, I'd say their cold brew is also pretty great quality as well. Usually I'd go to another coffee shop for a fix, but I'm okay grabbing both a croissant and cold brew here. I haven't been for their "after hours" dinner specials, but that's next on my to do list there!
