The quality of the ingredients was very good too. My husband had the whitefish poboy and we both agreed that it was the best preparation of white fish we've had- which is saying a lot, because were door county junkies. 10/10 recommend. read more

Walked to this restaurant from our B&B, and we were super pleased with our experience! Staff were super friendly, and we had a wonderful view of Lake Superior from the outdoor bar seating. The food was great and I definitely recommend going there, especially if you like fish tacos!! read more

When in Rome... gotta do the whitefish liver and sauteed with peppers and onions is the way to do it. This place did it well. If you like liver, try it. Much more mild than other liver. Pair it with an IPA and your set. Would recommend better local beer selection, but hey, can't be all things. read more

All depending who you get for a server and your location foe a seat, love this place. But lack of air flow inside and a busy restaurant means, put that perfume on your wrist to smell something nice besides the person sitting at the table next to you has bad body oder. We were staying in Minocqua and realized we had to go to Bayfield--one of our friends said they've heard Bayfield is the prettiest town in WI! Very cool to be able to sit right next to Lake Superior and have some trout and whitefish straight outta the lake. We were here on a Saturday afternoon around 1:30. We happened to go on a day where an annual bike race was finishing up. Lots of people out and about, but we didn't have a wait to be seated outside. Most of us had the fish n chips but with fries instead of American chips and with mixed fish (trout and whitefish). Really well done--their fries were the right size, crispy, and delicious. Fish was thin, but the batter was a good proportion and not oily at all. It seemed to be cornmeal based. Tarter sauce was good, too! One of us had the blackened whitefish sandwich, which was also great. Lots of fish on a big, buttery bun. Their pickled herring drink was much-hyped. Surprisingly, it wasn't as sweet as I thought it'd be. Not too strong. It's worth a try if you haven't had it. Great spot, would go back. Fish was so delicious! We were hungry and stopped in to have a snack. We ordered two appetizers-cheese curds and nachos. Both were subpar. I'm not the sure the nachos had cheese-there was a creamy substance on them, and the salsa was like katchup-there was also a sprinkling of lettuce on top. All odd choices and not great. The cheese curds were the breaded mot battered variety (I prefer battered) and not very hot or melted. It made sad to think that I spent time, energy and calories to eat them. We recently visited Bayfield on vacation. After taking one of the boat tours, we needed a place to go to dinner. We decided on The Pickled Herring / Pier Plaza Restaurant. When we walked by earlier it looked nice and had a decent crowd. Despite it getting kind of late (I think we had dinner close to 9:00) they were still open and very friendly. The crowd had died down which was nice too. The place was nice - sort of a bar area and a dining area with a nice outside area too. We sat inside. My wife ordered the Rib dinner - large amount of food. She got Ribs, two half ears of corn, potatoes and bread stick. The double starch was a bit much, but all was very tasty and good. I got the Pickled Herring sandwich - which by the way does NOT have pickled herring on it. (we had to ask). It was FANTASTIC! Ham and Turkey (I think, maybe chicken) with bacon, cheese, lettuce on very yummy ciabatta bread. WOW, so good I wanted to go back the next day to have another. Really top notch. Service was very good - fast and friendly. Had a couple of beers from the bar. Overall a great place to dine. Glad we went. read more

Ice cream window review: Avoid it. Vanilla ice cream is an unchanging standard across all dessert locations from NYC through L.A. Somehow, someway, this location has substandard vanilla ice cream. It's a shame as any grocery store has standard vanilla ice cream by the gallon bucket for purchase. Restaurant review: Blackened trout sandwich was forgettable. I tossed the top bun as it was too much bread for the hunk of bland fish. The appetizer we ordered, fish livers, is recommended though. Taste is similar to fried chicken livers. Service was okay, if slow. While we were there, it seemed like there were 1,000 house flies both inside and outside, perpetually landing on you and your food. My husband and I came to the bar to have a beer before dinner. Plenty of space to sit at the bar. Beer list is very extensive. We loved the strawberry rhubarb beer from New Glarus (although it's seasonal!) but even more we enjoyed chatting with the bartender who was very friendly and attentive. Can't speak to the food but wish I would have come on multiple occasions to enjoy a drink. Service was great! read more

Located right by the Madeline Island Ferry in the cutest district in town. Food was amazing! My picky 10 yr old that eats literally nothing plowed through his cheese burger and fruit cup. Spectacular view and cheap beer! We came for a quick snack and drinks. We ended up trying the lake superior Oatmeal beer stout (dark beer with a sweet twist to it). The fish is good. Get the fish. You want something else? Tread carefully. Or get the fish. The fish--they were serving lake whitefish the day of our visit--was fresh, light and flavorful. The breading was tasty, if laid on a bit thick. The sandwiches aren't bad, but are unnecessarily huge and come with WAY too much bun. If you lose half the bun and partake in some additional disassembly, you'll probably do OK. For sides, get the potato chips. They're not particularly great, but they're edible, which makes them an order of magnitude better than the fries, which came to us chewy, overcooked and gross. The coleslaw is also worth avoiding unless you ABSOLUTELY NEED COLESLAW, NOW. It's watery and without much flavor. The service was kind of slow and our server did that thing where she disappeared right when we wanted the check, but otherwise the experience was fine. Nice view if you can get a window, too. So, this isn't a restaurant to seek out, but it works in a pinch. Especially if you get the fish. read more

Love love this place! I've lived on Madeline Island most of my life, so we rarely actually spend enough time in Bayfield to eat, but when we do this is the go-to. Fabulous food, friendly staff, and a convenient location. Today I was absolutely starving and needed some lunch, but didn't have the time to sit in and dine. I called in for a whitefish sandwich, no onions. People on the phone were friendly and efficient. Had a great variety of sides, I chose sweet potato fries, which are the BEST I've ever had. The family was starving after walking to the Apostle Island ice caves, so we were happy to find this little gem along our path back to the hotel. I have never had fish and chips that were so fresh! I was literally looking out the window at the waters where my fish was caught, which was pretty cool. This also means that they don't have a bunch of frozen fish in the freezer just waiting for folks to order it. There is a limited amount everyday because they fish for it everyday. So if you are one of the lucky ones, check it out! Overall the lunch was a bit too pricey considering that there are only three of us and the bill was over $60 for lunch. Our server was amazing and really knew her stuff. Her name was Mary, and she took a lot of pride in how they get their fish and the attention that they pay to the preparation of each person's meal. Busy holiday weekend crowd, so we expected a bit of a wait. Hostess was very friendly and attentive dispute the tired, over warm tourist rush. Our server was busy, busy but was super nice, gave great service and even paused a moment to answer questions. Ordered the risotto balls appetizer (yum!), the whitefish sandwich (super yum!), the pulled pork Cuban sandwich (very tasty!) and the north Cobb salad (huge and excellent!) Really nice lunch place. Ate outside with a great view of the marina. Wife has the ruben sandwich which was a special and they actually ran out of it while we were eating. Stopped in for a drink and appetizer. We had a Pickled Herring to drink. It was quite good and went down easy for having 5 different shots of alcohol in it. Friday night fish fry did not disappoint. Good tap list and the patio seating was nice.

Food: good. All you can eat fresh fish fry on Friday was a treat. You can pick from trout or whitefish or both. One tasted fishy-er than the other...unsure which was which tho. The Cobb salad was excellent. Dessert: ice cream from adjoining ice cream shop is very tasty. The cookie was hard. Atmosphere: nice inside.
