So I went to The Pie Store in Montclair this morning, thinking I would get myself a Cornish Pastie. I'm the only customer in there and I'm walking around for a good five, maybe ten minutes looking at stuff. There's four people behind the counter. Not a single one says anything to me. Pretty much pretends I'm not there. The last time I was there, I got no service either and it's a tiny store with just two aisles so it's not like you could wander around and not be seen. No one spoke to me until I approached them to ask if they had sticky toffee pudding (which they didn't). Funny enough, as soon as an older white guy walks in, he immediately gets a "Good Morning, how can I help you?" Mind you, he was dressed pretty casual too so it wasn't a "class" thing. I don't know about you, but I find it funny that the white customers got immediate attention while I'm left to roam about like I don't exist. Just sayin'. I was going to buy something but left with nothing because I'm not going to give my hard earned money to a place that obviously doesn't want it. Not to mention, they're overpriced. read more

This place is an Irish girls dream come true. They have all the goodies from Cadbury's, Brennan's, sausages, Easter eggs, custard, bistro gravy, fairy liquid etc- all the creature comforts. I didn't actually try their pies but they look tasty. read more

OH MY GOD! I'm having the banoffee pie now, and IT. IS. DELICIOUS. Also tried out the Madras soccer pie, sausage roll as well as the lamb and feta pasty. To begin with the flaky, buttery crusts are just amazing!! Out of the savory items, I definitely, thoroughly enjoyed the pasty, the most, and after that the sausage roll. That crumbly lamb filling which melts in the mouth with the cheese...mmmm...The Madras pie was nice, but I wish it had just a little more of a spicy kick. Such a cute, little store with a range of lovely chocolates for sale as well. Went today, on a Sunday afternoon, and there was ample street parking in front, by the store. The bill did come up to quite an amount for two individuals, for bakery items. So maybe wouldn't come here on a regular basis. But looking forward to trying out more of the pies from here, both sweet and savory! read more

OMG! The Pie Store has the BEST turkey/Stuffing/ everything pot pie! And oh those little custard desserts- I can NEVER just eat one!!!

A longtime customer and fan, I was utterly shocked by the rudeness I experienced from Samantha, the owner. However, given her reputation, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. I had driven from Jersey City, but due to traffic delays, I arrived 20 minutes after closing time. But, because I could see that Samantha was still inside the store, I called to see if she might be willing to let me make a purchase. While I didn't expect it since I was late arriving, I also didn't expect the attitude. Samantha answered the phone, I apologized and explained how far I had driven, etc., Her response was "I don't even know why I picked up the phone. What do you need to buy?" I replied and her response...." no, we are SO closed". Again, I realize she didn't owe it to me to let me in given my lateness, but her rudeness and leading me on by asking me what I wanted, then shutting the conversation down was uncalled for. Taking my business elsewhere, as are several of my other Brit expat friends who are Montclair residents. read more

Good, GOOD food. I mean really. AND - Fun in the tea shop -- truly. Atmosphere is everything in a way - I mean, it reflects the content of the place; and the warm atmosphere, the cool stuff, the whole British-pie and British candy and the food is SO good. The staff is clearly happy and that means to me that the food is made with love and care and I can taste that. The key lime pie is kind of magic. read more

This place does not disappoint. Everything I've tried has been great. The double crust berry apple pie is my favorite.

On my first visit I LOVED the soccer pie and would rate it 4-5 stars. On my second visit I tried the Cornish pasty and was not a fan, but this was my first time ever trying a Cornish pasty so it may not be for me in general. Reason for the 3 stars is that the chocolate bars I purchased are dated best by April 11 2017 and it's May 30. I'm still going to have them because it's not the expiration date and I know they're still fine, but as a business I don't think they should be shelved any longer. read more

Few appropriate words come to mind when I think of the deliciousness that this place creates. We had the Steak, Ale & Mushroom pie, the Chicken Tikka pie, Chicken and Mushroom pie and the Bangers & Mash pastry-type things and everything was fantastic. I'm ashamed to admit that I was a kinda upset that I had to share the Steak, Ale & Mushroom pie with my wife, but she did pay for it so that was just me being a greedy b@stard. Came in for banoffee pie after searching on yelp and left with 2 bag filled with goodies - very nice owners and people working there - they didn't have banoffee on the weekday I was there but she made me one on the spot - couldn't resist the other pies because the combo of ingredients was outstanding: - sweet potato and blue cheese (strong fresh cheese!) - lamb was super savory - chicken masala delicious with chickpeas pouring out To top it off, it's a heaven for anyone looking for goodies from the UK - dairy milk chocolates, sodas, h&p sauces, curries, beans, golden syrup...so many random things that you didn't you could find ! Don't ever plan to order a pie for Thanksgiving here. It is a monumental disaster waiting to happen. My family ordered a pie a few days in advance. We had it all ordered and it would be ready to pick up the day before Thanksgiving. We end up getting a call back a few minutes later saying that our order was "past the deadline" and that we would only be able to pick it up after Thanksgiving. Really? Talk about customer service...and that's only the beginning! We decided to suck it up and settle for a post-thanksgiving pie because of all the great reviews. The establishment also failed to mention that they were closed on the day after Thanksgiving. Anyhow, fast-forward now to Saturday, we go to pick up the chocolate mousse pie. My mother notices the pie in a box dated for a pickup the day before thanksgiving. They took the pie out of that box and put in a new box and wrote something on the box. All the sudden it is Saturday's date and time! What a surprise! My mom asks if this pie we are picking up is actually fresh and was made for today and not pre-Thanksgiving. They assure her it is. We take the sucker home, take a knife to cut it, and the mousse is hard as a rock! Gotta love some nice chocolate mousse that'll chip a tooth! That's the definition of "fresh" right there. Yes, we heard that the mouse pie should be left out to "defrost" for a couple hours. However, after over 6 hours of being left out and it still being hard as a rock, we gave up. Anyhow, it is clear the pie was made days before we picked it up, and we were blatantly lied to. We ended up calling and giving the workers there our voice and indeed we ended up with a refund, so kudos to The Pie Store for that. All in all, I wouldn't trust a word a worker here says and clearly they do not care for their customers. The rock hard mousse was a disaster. Maybe it is a good thing we didn't get it on Thanksgiving when it was all said and done. Had we brought a rock hard jawbreaker-mousse pie to someone's house for Thanksgiving, we'd probably never be invited again. read more

I live 5 minutes away from this place and I've lived in the area all my life, I can't believe I waited until last weekend to try it for the first time! I wish I never waited. I got the medium chocolate mousse pie & large apple pie for dessert for my family dinner, and everyone LOVED both. My cousin probably had half the apple pie, and the large is huge and so heavy. They may seem expensive but you definitely get your money's worth. I want to get back here ASAP and try more pies, especially the peach one before summer is over! Definitely go here if you're a pie lover, it's like heaven. read more

This. Place. Is. Awesome. We've driven by it a thousand times, saying, "we should check that place out." We finally did, and were not disappointed. It's a tiny little slice of England, right here in Montclair. The pies are incredible. We had a savory one, chicken and mushroom, and a sweet, blackberry/ raspberry/ apple. They were both so delicious. The chunks inside the pies were very generously sized, no mistaking what was chicken, what watt mushroom and what was crust with these pies! The lovely lady behind the counter was cheerful and genuinely kind and happy to have us there. It felt like we were back on our honeymoon in England. Complete with the snacks and chocolates straight from England too! The space for shoppers is small, because the bakers' area took up at least two thirds of the space. But well worth it. It was a bit pricey, but for handmade pies that were so well made, it's worth it! If the budget allowed, I'd be there daily! Definitely going back again! read more

not impressed. in fact, a let down. i ordered a berry "pie" & some kind of beef pastry. the beef pastry, which was ground beef & potatoes in a half moon looking pastry tasted good. it had the taste of beef stew minus the chunks of sirloin, carrots and peas. the so called pie, however, was a disaster! firstly, they shouldn't call it a pie, cause it's not. it was just some jelled tasteless fruit underneath hard latticed pastry dough. we couldn't cut pieces... we tried, but the lattice (which was rock hard) popped off in a few places. so we took it all off & the fruit was just sitting there in the little square foil pan. we started to eat it right from the pan, but there was absolutely. no. taste!! we wound up throwing the whole thing (yes, the whole thing) in the garbage. and this place isn't cheap, so that pissed me off. a lot. the beef thing was good, but not worth the price. all in all, not worth a second try. read more

The most unbelievably good, savory and sweet pies you can get ANYWHERE. Made on the premises, you will find vegetarian, fruit, and meat pies. There are also delicious soups made on the premises as well as a small amount of other dry goods like cookies, coffees, teas and other comfort foods and beverages. No space to eat in but your order can be heated and utensils provided if you want to take it elsewhere to eat. I highly recommend this place. read more

I've been meaning to check this place out since I moved to the area last fall. So last week, I took advantage of the fact guests were visiting to go there to pick up dessert. I purchased key lime pie and blueberry pie. On the positive side, the food looks good, the place smells fantastic, and the staff is quite friendly. On the negative side, the fruit pies were quite expensive. A pie that my friend and I assumed would be the small pie based upon its appearance, was the large pie (according to the staff), and it was priced at $23.95. This was perhaps a 7 or 8 inch diameter pie. On the more neutral side - the taste. The pies both tasted OK, but just OK. The key lime pie was nicely presented, but a bit on the rich side. Let me clarify that - I expect key lime pie to be rich and creamy, but this was leaning toward sitting in your stomach heavy. The blueberry pie was comparable to ones I've had at people's houses. Nothing earth-shattering. I think I need to go back and try the savory pies. Those are dishes that I am less likely to make myself, so I might appreciate them more. read more

This place is next level good. I stopped in to grab 2 dessert pies for a Super Bowl party this weekend. I got the apple-blackberry-raspberry combo and the chocolate mousse. Both were amazing. The combo may have been the best fruit pie that I've ever eaten. At first, they may seem pricey - $25 each. But don't be dissuaded - they are GIGANTIC. Both pies were huge and dense and can easily feed 10 people each. They also had key lime, coconut creme, and various other desserts. What looked even better was their dinner pies. They had pot pies, shepherds pies, curry pies, and all kinds of other delicoiusness. If you live near Montclair, definitely come here for dinner and/or dessert to go. Honestly we were very underwhelmed with the pies we purchased. We went based on yelp reviews and a restaurant review we saw online. We purchased the Chicken Tikka pie and the Apple pie. The Tikka pie was a real disappointment - very little chicken, too much grainy sauce (like you would get if you bought the packet mix from Patel Bros.) and no bottom crust. The only redeeming part for the Tikka pie was the puff pastry on top, which was good. The apple pie didn't have a bottom crust (what apple pie doesn't have a bottom crust?), the apples were bitter/sour and undercooked and the top crust was chewy and not flaky at all. We felt the apple pie was on par with the pathmark $2.99 special. It was like they were cranking pies out in a factory kitchen, not a small pie shop. We won't be back. read more

This place is really great! First noticed it after my boyfriend accidentally found it walking home one day. It looks very low key on the outside, but once you enter, your nose quickly realizes that these are no ordinary pies! Not only do they sell delicious dessert pies, but SAVORY PIES! So hard to find, especially fresh and homemade. My first pie was the key lime and it was fantastic. The second one, which was my favorite of the two, was a sweet potato pie with a hint of blue cheese. Amazing!. I will continue to visit the Pie store as much as possible. read more

Delicious pies, many made from unique and creative ingredients. All are made fresh. I've enjoyed the chicken pot pie, the thanksgiving pie, and the beef, ale and mushroom pie. The 'small' pot pies can easily feed two adults. I haven't tried the sweet pies yet BUT I am dying to try the key lime pie! The hours are really great too. read more

As a shop that sells British grocery goods, this place only gets 2.5-3 stars. The shop is teeny-tiny and they don't have a very big selection. I was hoping for more variety in the tea offerings, for example. But they bake all kinds of fresh goodies, and that's what bumped up my rating. I got a cheddar scone that warmed up beautifully the next morning, and my husband got a pasty with steak and cheese that was really buttery and delicious. I am excited to go back and try more of their fresh-made offerings! read more

Love this place...has a unique selection of items you can't find anywhere else. The staff is very friendly and helpful in describing their inventory. Am addicted to the Mincemeat Pie. I generally go in for their fresh mincemeat pies...the owner has even cooked up a small batch for me when I called in on a Saturday (later in the day) to see if they had any...they told me they were sold out, but asked how many I wanted and to stop by in about 45 minutes. A cute little shop in a small row of stores that at first glance, looked like the ones you'd find in Once Upon A Time land. There's a little parking strip in front of the stores or park on the street nearby and walk a bit. It was my first time at the store and the lady behind the counter was graciously helpful and friendly. We decided on a selection of savory pies which we took home and later warmed in the microwave: Chicken Madras Soccer Pie was so scrumptious! Spicy Madras curry inside a round mouth-watering pie crust - we are definitely getting more of this next time. My guy loved the Steak, Ale and Mushroom Pie - it was very robust. We also loved their Cornish Pasties - they were simple and perfectly crafted - filling was moist and tasty. . We brought their large Apple & Cranberry pie to a dinner the next evening and it was a big hit. Normally, I don't like sweet crust because they tend to be too much when combined with sweet pie filling, but Pie Store's crust were only slightly sweet and the apple & cranberry filling was on the tangy side. It was perfect with vanilla ice-cream. Moreover, the crust held up nicely when warmed in the microwave (I nuked mine for 55 seconds). read more

The pie I got from The Pie Store was the best pie I have ever had, ever, by far. Filled with berries and rhubarb, it was wonderful. No gooey pie filling, just the natural fruit, and spices, perhaps. The crust was amazing - not mushy or crumbly. The Pie Store takes pies to a new level. I would post a picture, but it is all gone. I will definitely go back for more, often. read more

Excellent sweet and savory pies! I have tried the apple pie, pumpkin, chicken pot pie and Thanksgiving pie. My least fav is the pumpkin pie due to too many spices including cloves. Hard to find a simple pumpkin pie these days. Thanksgiving pie was amazing. Highly recommend. read more
