The food was great. I love a good Cornbeef hash. They seemed short staffed at the time I was there but service was still on par for the course. It was breakfast time so the ambiance was the sun shining through to get us going. Indoor or outdoor seating available. Nothing to complain about. I'm going back for more.

One of four Potholder Breakfast Cafes around the greater Long Beach area, Potholder Cafe in DTLB serves up a varied menu for breakfast and lunch, closing by 1 pm. It's within easy walking distance from my place, so decided to make it a spot for a big breakfast as soon as they opened at 8am. Intentionally ordered too much to try two of my favorite things at a California diner: chili and a loco moco. Ended up bringing the former back home, and finishing the latter. Service was good, food was OK. I was the first customer to enter, and was greeted nicely by the early shift server and allowed to choose a booth. Was immediately given a laminated menu, and ice water was brought immediately after I asked. By that time, I had my choice and the food came in a reasonable amount of time. Homemade Chili Bowl w/Cheese & Onion ($8.95). - a normal size bowl. Not chile con carne, but had a healthy amount of beans. Strangely the base tasted strongly like Mexican refried (pinto) beans, not chili or tomato as I expected...this is not a chili my wife would dip her fries in. There was a good amount of cheese and onion, along with some pieces of beef (steak). Maritime Loco Moco ($16.95) - not sure why this is called 'maritime', it was simple but decent. It's a diner, so used easily source able ingredients, like minute rice, brown gravy from a jar, and a quarter pound hamburger patty. The two runny eggs were prepared perfectly and really did elevate the dish for me. The menu description was accurate. As mentioned, service was good throughout. There is a small parking lot to the side that gets filled quickly. There is a small outdoor patio in front for al fresco. Due to the proximity to the Long Beach cruise port, Potholders is a popular breakfast stop for cruisers, expecting classic American breakfast fare. And as usual, value depends on what you choose. In my case, prices were high for what I ordered and got. A better deal would have been more breakfast centric items like their custom omelets or hash.

Returning to this location within walking distance (13 minutes) of our Hyatt Centric hotel. First time we were here, it was a quiet weekday. Today, January 1, 2026, it is BUSY! Not too many solid breakfast spots open today, so we were happy Potholder welcomed recovering NYE revelers. Management positioned a hostess stand out front, but no sign-in sheet. We arrived behind another couple and it wasn't long before another couple arrived behind us. After a couple of minutes, I "boldly" opened the door to make sure we weren't missing something. A server looked up almost immediately, plates of food in her arms, smiled and let me know someone would be out shortly. We were sat about 5 minutes later. While there was plenty of hustle amongst the staff, the vibe was still pretty chill for a business that would be closing 90 minutes later. In fact, they were still seating people 15 minutes prior to close. We happened to be there until 1:15, lingering a bit, and noticing none of the tables were meant to feel rushed. They kept the weekday special - today was Three for Thursday - despite the holiday in a fairly touristy city. That was appreciated. The Thursday specials offer A) 3 eggs paired with 3 bacon or sausage, toast and potatoes OR B) 3 eggs, French toast and 3 bacon or sausages OR C) 3 eggs, 3 pancakes and 3 bacon or sausages. Each option was $12.95. Pretty darn good deal! Hubs ordered option "A" w/french fries, I went with option "C" cuz the word here is the delicious pancakes. Now, y'all, you KNOW I love pancakes, and I know Potholder offers a "Mac Daddy Frankie", an 18" single pancake, but I scoff, that is NOT a lot of pancake! My stack of 3, 8" pancakes were cake-y, fluffy, but dense, in a great way, were STEAMING HOT and had, as another Yelper noted, a hint of cinnamon in that house scratch recipe. There HAD to be more batter in my stack of 3, compared to a single 18" pancake. Don't worry, I polished that stack, but goood! I ordered my eggs "over hard", so I could easily remove the yolks and just have the whites, but 2 eggs must've broke because only 1 egg was visibly intact and the yolk was mixed in with the whites of my other eggs. Bummer. Bacon was done perfectly crisp, not even close to burnt, so good job on that. Hubs eggs were over medium and a little runny, but he declared them a solid 'fine'. He was also happy with his bacon and fries, but the white toast was delayed, so his food cooled a bit whilst waiting for that. We had to catch our server's eye for a coffee refill, but Tyana was friendly and working hard. I wasn't offered a refill of water, which would've been nice. In all, we enjoyed a solid meal at a very fair price and the location was an easy walk from our hotel. We will keep it in our Long Beach list as an easy breakfast spot. Cheers! "CC"

This may look odd but its soo good! They are not kidding about the works. Ive been sick for sometime and this was definitely comforting. The oatmeal was covered in all sorts of goodies such as caramelized pecans, granola, banana and a little too much butter.. but that was ok. They also provide a side of milk and raisins too. We ordered for pick up but we definitely enjoy dining in. Service is always on point. The potholder never disappoints.

You want a classic, home-y, comfy diner feel for breakfast? This is your next stop. I would hear about this lil cafe and would always be piqued to try it. I finally had an early Sunday morning to beat the rest of the Sunday crowds. I was in a party of 3 and was sat indoors. Which was perfected because it was pretty gloomy and humid and I'd rather eat my breakfast out the dumpster than be in humidity. Needless to say they have both indoor and outdoor seating. I ended up ordering the Frankie's special which was the perfect balance of protein, carbs and fats. Their sausage was REAL sausage meaning it wasn't the small little sausage links that remind you of your ex. I'm unsure if it was pork chicken or turkey but it was pretty savory and flavorful and gave a nice balance for the eggs and French toast. The egg wash/dip for the French toast was the best bath for the bread. I didn't even need to use syrup, the powdered sugar was plenty sweetness for me. I ended up sharing the Mia's stuffed French toast with strawberry cream cheese with my additionals. I really enjoyed the corn flake crispy crust on it was nice to have the texture of a crunch with the softness of the bread. Service was average or subpar to average. Our waitress wasn't the friendliest and had the whole "I don't want to be here it's 9am Sunday" attitude was there it was off putting but it didn't ruin our breakfast. Overall I'd come back when I want to have the home feeling diner. Parking is street parking otherwise there's a parking structure conveniently across the cafe.

Came here for breakfast the other day, and must say the few times I've been here, it's always been good. Nice portions. Good service. This past visit not so much. Food was great, been better before. But I ordered an iced tea, and the server returned to let me know they forgot to brew it. So I got a club soda instead. But never got a refill. Sat at the counter. It was slow. But the servers were too busy chatting or doing roll ups.

Pay attention to the little things and the big things won't go wrong. This was the lesson I was taught over and over while learning the restaurant business. So, they have a podium which says, please wait to be seated. And then no one is there to seat you. So, just to see how long it would take I started a stop watch. 4:35 later, one of the servers tells me someone will be with me shortly. What are your standards for greeting your customers? Is 4 minutes and 35 seconds appropriate when there is literally not a single customer in sight? Then, I wanted to sit at the counter. Which is fine, except literally half the counter was turned into a silverware rolling station. And... I want given silverware until I asked for it after the food arrived. Little things. Now, I ordered the Waffle Wednesday special. 2 eggs, choice of 2 meat, a waffle and 2 eggs any style. I thought I asked for hash browns to go with it. It was missed. Little things. The eggs and sausage were brought out right away, since the potatoes were missed, I waited for those as well as the waffle. The orange juice came with no straw. Little things. The staff is friendly. They were simply unfocused. Teach me to show up 15 minutes before closing. The total bill with tip ended up being just over $30! Yikes! The food was very good, but, $30 for breakfast?!?

Tina (just remember like Tina Turner) is an amazing waitress. She was so attentive, kind, and funny. Really pleasant personality. I wish every serve was like her. The food here is classic diner style and the menu selection is massive. 10/10 recommend

I wanted to like this place , since seeing a cute review on Social Media, but I was disappointed. We went on a Wednesday morning around 11 am. Not busy at all maybe 5 tables inside and outside dining. Male & Female servers. Took awhile to get our order placed, once we ordered the food came quickly, nice and hot and that was it. She never came to refill our coffee or check up on us. Finally we asked for a glass of water and she brought it to us after about 5 mins. The food was average breakfast diner food. I got a chicken fried steak the gravy seemed watered down and needed salt 5/10. Hubby ordered Grand Prix he gave a 6/10. I probably wouldn't return. Parking can be challenging on the street metered parking. Restaurant was clean and well decorated.

This is a great place for a hearty brunch, with all of the standard diner favorites. The staff is cheerful and helpful, though perhaps a bit busy with the weekend crowd, e.g. I asked for butter a few times and it never came. They did, however, keep the mimosas coming, and who could be anything other than happy with that. read more

Decided to stop in here the morning after our Mexico cruise. I ordered the Mr.Potato Head (potato skins covered in eggs, chicken, bacon, cheese, avocado, and sour cream. Hubby got the Turbo Omlette. Food and aervice were awesome! Every server who walked by our table made sure our coffee and soda were full. Will remember this place for anytime I'm in Long Beach. read more

I really wish I had a place like this where I lived. I had the vegan Benedict with potatoes and it was amazing. The best part about it was the potatoes. I've had a lot in my day and these are absolutely, hands down, the best! Crispy, flavorful, hot and fresh. I'm not even a potato fan but I just can't say enough about them. The vegan Benedict was also delicious. The description does not do it justice. If you are vegan and in long beach you have to come here for breakfast. read more

The place can become pretty busy with about a 25 minute wait on a Sunday after about 10:30. I really can't see why. Our food wasn't anything to brag about. We each had eggs, bacon, and home fries. The home fries tasted like peppers and onions because they were filled with them. Our service was pretty good, our server was attentive. There are certainly better places around for breakfast. read more

Delicious!!! My chicken fried steak was so yummy and unhealthy. Exactly what I wanted. Almost went to a diner across the street from my friends but this was definitely worth the drive. We went for breakfast, party of six and had a variety of menu items. Nothing really impressive, normal portions, kids menu portions small. The one exceptional item was the flaky French toast, it was very good. But eggs didn't come close to how ordered, which I find strange for a breakfast place. read more

I LOVE the potholder in Belmont Heights, but I'll never go back to this location in DTLB. The number one reason, FLIES! Yuck! There were so many flies inside that I had to sit there guarding my coffee and food. It was really uncomfortable and gross. Reason number two, the service was slow!! There weren't that many people and our waitress would disappear for long periods of time. Last reason, it's super dark inside. The windows are super tinted and hardly let in any light. And from the outside it looks empty and depressing because of these windows. I'll stick with my usual location in Belmont. read more

This place used to be a 5 out of 5 but now it's a 2. Just because it's super bowl Sunday and their traffic is reduced, they decided to close over an hour early and not even warn customers. It said open from 7am to 4 right outside the door. The reason I am so upset is because the staff gave us a very snotty response of " we are closed. Look at the open sign outside. It's turned off" with a tone. There was also another couple after us that got the same treatment. Awful. read more

Food was AWSOME! I ordered something from the "vegan" menu but then the server said the food was "cooked in butter" without realizing this couldn't be correct. She was then corrected by another server but I didn't have confidence that she could help me navigate dietary restrictions. Otherwise, the outdoor seating was pleasant, the crowd was groovy and the food was pretty good! We would go back again. read more

Great breakfast and lots of yummy options including vegan! Loved the vegan spuds and the Benedict option as well. My friend loved the pancakes. They have a small parking lot but there's several garages with free 2 hour parking nearby. Service is very friendly too! I definitely recommend. read more

This place is awesome. The place is old school diner. The server was helpful but not fast like going to chain. All the choices are LARGE . The server made great suggestions. My friend and I both had "The Couch." 3 ppl could have shared one of these. The potatoes that comes with this dish can be ordered by themselves. I sat there having a foodgasm. We tried to come back before our trip was over bc it was sooo good. Love it. Breakfast is awesome next trip lunch. read more

A month ago after an intense workout at Downtown Long Beach's 24hr Fitness, a buddy of mine as well as my girlfriend wanted to grab a large breakfast immediately after. So much for a great workout right? LoL. My buddy suggested The Potholder Cafe Too since it was just a couple blocks away and claimed that it's a pretty good breakfast joint. And so we went. It wasn't busy or crowded at all. We had gone around 1pm on a Saturday. Items ordered were: The Couch, Mary's Aphrodite Omelette, and the Hobo Omelette. Prior to ordering The Couch, I contemplated on whether I should try out the "Mac Daddy Frankie". It's a large 18 inch pancake meal with eggs and bacon strips or sausage. I wanted to order it just so that I can say I've had it. Haha. But it wasn't a smart idea. Once the order was placed, all the food arrived within 12 to 15 mins. Quite impressive for the amount of food ordered. A couple quick bites of each item, and to my surprise... quality was very good. Everything tasted great. Nothing was considered poor quality nor was anything close to being bland. All the ingredients were fresh, everything was seasoned well, scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly, pancakes were fluffy and delicious, bacon strips were crispy, and the sausages were good too. Not a single thing that I didn't dislike. Another factor that enhanced our first time experience was how friendly and helpful our waitress was. She helped described some of the food items in detail when we weren't too sure on what to order. She always strolled by our table to make sure that our cups and glasses were always filled. The restaurant itself is a simple, clean, and inexpensive place to dine. The seating / booths are average to spacious. It's not cramped like some of the smaller diners. There's a small section out in the front for outdoor patio seating as well. It's mainly for those individuals who love the take-in all of the lovely Southern California smog in the air. Haha. Totally kidding. It's a pretty easy place to find. It's at the corner of a T-intersection across from the Long Beach City Hall and Long Beach Pacific Library's parking structure. For those who are tourists, it's a few blocks away from the Long Beach Pike. This is another good quality breakfast place on my list that I wouldn't mind coming back to. If prices and portions are compared, I would say that it's worth the money. The portions would be rated somewhere between "average" and "generous". read more

I was disappointed in the taste of the food and the service provided could have been better. The waitress did not stop by my table too many times at most maybe twice to see how we were doing. My plate had a crack in it. For the first time in my life I was absolutely disappointed in a restaurant. I have never had to say those words. read more

I met up with my friend for breakfast at The Potholder Cafe on a Sunday morning, and overall we had a really good experience. My friend parked on the street in metered parking, but since it was Sunday, parking was free. I drove around looking for street parking too, but then noticed they have a parking lot behind the restaurant. It was completely full, which showed right away how busy and popular the place was, but luckily I was able to grab a spot just in time. One of the main reasons we chose The Potholder Cafe was because they offer outdoor seating. My friend had his two beagles with him, and I brought my dog as well, so it was the perfect option for us. Since it was a busy Sunday morning, there was a little bit of a wait if you wanted to sit outside, but it was worth it. The staff was very friendly from the start and gave us great customer service. After we were seated, our waitress even brought bowls of water for our dogs, which was such a thoughtful touch and made us feel very welcomed. For breakfast, I ordered the chilaquiles and my friend ordered a club sandwich. The food was good and definitely hit the spot. My chilaquiles were not traditional Mexican-style chilaquiles, but they still tasted really good, and I ended up finishing the whole plate. My friend also finished his sandwich, so I'm assuming he enjoyed his meal too. Even though the restaurant was busy, our waitress stayed very attentive the entire time. She checked on us often, made sure we had everything we needed, and kept up with refills, which I appreciated. Another plus was the price. The food portions were satisfying, the service was great, and the total bill for both of us came out to only $48, which I thought was very reasonable. Overall, The Potholder Cafe was a great breakfast spot with friendly staff, good service, reasonable prices, and a nice dog-friendly outdoor seating area. If I could leave a -10 star rating I would. Was dining today and a young man who lives across the street parked in their parking lot. Instead of staff leaving a note on his car they directed their employees to block his car in with their car. When the young man returned and asked them to move and be let out the REFUSED!! They twice told him that he would have to wait until their staff ends their shift to move, despite there being NO SIGNS indicating it was "employee parking" as they stated. It was a whole scene once his friends/family showed up to try and talk them into moving and the manger AND the OWNER both refused causing the place to be completely disrupted, thought they were going tear it down. WHO DOES This??? As a local business OWNER myself, I would NEVER in a million years...You inconvenienced your customers and placed your employees at risk by being petty?? Food is beyond subpar, Long Beach has way better to offer and I will take my business elsewhere. This was low key blatant racism in practice. read more

I was looking for a quick breakfast place for friends who were in town, and staying at the Hilton downtown Long Beach, and The Potholder exceeded my expectations. I initially chose the restaurant because they have a dedicated lot, and I would not have to search for parking, and was pleased when I saw they also had outside dining. The staff was friendly, and the breakfast menu provided a lot of options. I chose the veggie omelet with a pancake instead of toast, and really enjoyed it. The omelet itself was Delicous, but core veggies (spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes) were sparse, and the topping of sour cream and olives were unnecessary, and took away from the flavor. I will definitely return, and have breakfast here again, but I will add more veggies and no sour cream. read more

Came to the Potholder with some out of town friends from Texas after we got off a cruise We sat down to have Breakfast and when the waitress came to take our order, I looked at the window and I then told the waitress and my friends I am sorry I wont be eating as I see a Roach crawling down the wall next to my friend and next to our table. I wont eat at a place that has Roaches and the fact that it was crawling down the wall I am sure the owners or management is aware they have them, when I told the waitress that was there she didn't look shocked and said I am sorry as we walked out. We always have an excellent experience at The Potholder Cafe, thanks to Tiffany's outstanding service. She is consistently warm, kind, and welcoming, and makes every visit feel easy and enjoyable. Ordered some takeout from here for breakfast yesterday and was very pleased. I got a omelette, French toast, and biscuits. Everything was delicious, my favorite was the French toast though. The way it was prepared and the texture was phenomenal. Not too soggy and not too dry, just right. Will definitely be back and try to come in for a actual meal. The server made us feel right at home and offered us cold water as she saw us sweating ! We looked at the menu and went with the eggs & pancakes . The pancakes were so fluffy and the eggs were delicious ! I highly recommend the French toast as well., I taste it from my friend's plate and I wanted more for sure ! The coffee was freshly brewed and was so rich. The vibe was so chill I would come back here for sure ! The restrooms were clean and well maintained for the busy Sunday morning they had .

The one drawback is the noise level...this is a popular, busy place, and with all those folks chatting, the noise level is so high you can barely hear your companions. I would seriously recommend noise dampening efforts.

It was a decent meal, but with so many breakfast spots in Long Beach to explore, it's questionable if we'll commit to round two. I will say, the service was top tier. The cafe is very cute and quaint. It is very small and can only seat about 6 small tables, though they have about 4 or 5 tables outside on the sidewalk. Over a decade ago, I volunteered for a special event in Long Beach and was given a volunteer shirt to wear during the event. The shirt has the words "Long Beach", and it was a good thing I saved this shirt because it really did save me $16.49 on an order of pasta! I only recently learned about 908 Day when I picked up a 908 Day booklet from a different business in Long Beach. After perusing said booklet and all the deals listed, I determined that, besides a free car wash, Tony's Kitchen offered the best deal: Any pasta for $9.08 from 2 to 8 PM, though there was a stipulation that stated some items, including steak, would be excluded. I arrived just after 7 PM, and it was just about packed! There were a couple of tables open, but nobody at the front desk to greet me. I went up to the counter in the rear of the restaurant to ask about the 908 Day promo since it mentioned what I said earlier about some pastas being excluded from the $9.08 deal. 908 Day booklet in hand, I spoke to a younger server and asked her which of the pastas would be excluded from the $9.08 deal, and she mentioned all of the pastas on the menu would be eligible for that pricing. She then asked if I wanted to dine in or order to go. I initially said "to go", but then she said the deal was dine-in only even though the booklet didn't specify that as a stipulation. Well, okay I guess, but it didn't leave the best first impression, that's for sure. She told me I'd be seated in a bit, and so I sauntered back to the front desk to wait until I got seated at a table for two closest to the front door with less lighting compared to all the other tables for four. The other, older server handed me a menu for me to look over. I studied the menu and was intent on getting a $24 pasta dish since $24 was the highest price tag on their pasta menu. Furthermore, I saw that all but one of those dishes would use chicken as the main protein; the odd one out was the Creamy Chipotle Shrimp, which sounded like a winning combo that I had to go for. The pastas with chicken sounded good too, but the shrimp was calling my name. As I was looking through the menu, I noticed a party of four was seated at a table right in front of me, and they were given glasses of water by the younger server before the older server came back to take my order. Hey! What about me? Well, it only took a minute more for the older server to come take my order. Even though shrimp is not the same as steak, I wanted to confirm with her that the Creamy Chipotle Shrimp would still be eligible for the $9.08 pricing, to which she answered affirmatively, and that was my final decision. She then asked, much to my surprise, if I wanted for here or to go. I didn't want to walk back to my car through a dark alley in the dark, so I chose "to go". She then took the menu and went back to relay my order to the kitchen crew. And so I waited. They had two TVs, one showing the LA Dodgers and the other showing LA Angels, so that kept me company while I was scrolling through my phone during my wait. I wish I had remembered to ask how long it would take for them to prepare my order, but I timed the wait to be approximately 20 minutes before the older server approached me with a takeout bag. I hadn't paid up to this point, so a part of me thought that an unethical customer could just snatch the order from her hands and run out. Of course, I'd never do such a thing, but she did instruct me to go up to the front to pay. Wouldn't it have been easier to just pay up front instead of asking me to take a seat at a table? I guess they like to do things the long way. When she rang me up, she did specify I had to be wearing "Long Beach", which was clearly present on my shirt, and so I had to point it out. I almost thought she was going to say "not good enough", but luckily, she still honored the 908 Day pricing. When I got home, I saw the pasta came in an aluminum pie tin with a plastic cover, and a piece of garlic bread was wrapped in aluminum foil. However, they didn't include utensils?! Surely, they could have included at least a fork, don't you think? The portion size seemed quite small for $24, but reasonable for $9.08 + tax. However, I counted only 5 pieces of shrimp in the pasta; I thought there would have been a few more for that price point, but at least the shrimp was peeled. The pasta was cooked al dente, and that creamy chipotle sauce was packed with so much flavor that I believe they added too much salt to the sauce. Garlic bread was good too, especially when I used it to scoop up the remaining sauce on the pie tin after I finished the pasta. Even though I enjoyed the pasta, I didn't enjoy my overall experience enough to give a 4th star. I'd consider a return visit for 908 Day next year if they offer the same deal, but not so much if I have to pay full price.
