I will eventually have to go back and provide a more accurate update... But here is what I have from my first encounter: I wanted to grab a drink and something to snack on, so dad and I decided to check this place out since we had never been. As far as the "bar atmosphere" of it all, it was a significantly older crowd... I'd say a majority of the patrons were over 60. I just had a glass of sangria and a small salad to hold me over until dinner. The waitress recommended the red sangria over the white, and suggested I try it with the cider blend. It had a nice fruity flavor with a citrusy kick at the end. I could have easily enjoyed another glass. My salad on the other hand, I went out on a limb! Beets to me are as disgusting as olives... But I decided to give the poached beet salad a try. It was served with significantly more beets than anticipated, diced apples, nuts (walnuts I think?), and goat cheese. It was pretty yummy and the combination of the beets within it all provided a nice peppery flavor to balance the sweet. Not opposed to stopping back in for a full meal! Stay tuned... read more

The pub is one of our favorite places in San Diego! Patty (the owner) works hard to bring amazing "home cooked" style irish and euro dishes. They are the only bar in town with Kroebenburg Blanc on tap, which is one of our favorite beers. We bring our dogs here who get greated with dog treats. Its just a great place all around, and we love the food and drinks here. The soups rotate weekly and are incredible! Recently theybadded rack of lamb....highly recommended! read more

We've visited previously a few times when this was Dan Diego's; the husband is a sucker for a good fish and chips and they served a really good one. It's always been a little "hole-in-the-wall feeling, with the interior a bit worn and a general feeling of being run down, but that hasn't bothered us as he really loves his fish and chips. We hadn't been since the recent name and other changes they've touted in emails to us, so when we found ourselves nearby we decided it was time to give it a try. When we walked in we noticed not much had changed appearance-wise. We were greeted nicely by a young guy server and told to sit anywhere, so we grabbed a seat on the patio. The server got us water and menus right away and took a drink order, and came back in a timely manner to take our order. The husband had the fish and chips and I, having just had a snack, went with just some of the regular buffalo wings, a favorite staple of mine anywhere as they are hard to mess up and I can take leftovers home. The food came in a reasonable amount of time, and the husband was enjoying his fish and chips. My wings however, were completely dry on arrival; a little sauce was in the bottom of the basket but the wings themselves were completely dry, so I asked the lady who brought the food for some of the buffalo sauce. While I waited for that, I went ahead and started in on a wing. The meat was so dry, it was barely edible, even dunked into the ranch dressing. It was obvious the wings must have been done first and sat under a warming light to the point all the sauce had dried up and the meat had been over cooked. I knew no amount of sauce was going to make these edible I set them aside and when the lady came back with the buffalo sauce, I politely let her know I was going to pass on the wings and could I have a cup of the stew. When pressed on what was wrong with the wings, I let her know they were dry and tough and frankly inedible. Her response was "we always get compliments on our wings!" like somehow I was crazy to not like them. I found this pretty annoying but just nodded and shrugged, and asked again if I could get the stew instead. The stew took a little longer than I would have expected for a soup, and was served with a little piece of I assume Irish soda bread, which was fine. The stew was lacking flavor, needing some pepper and salt. The meat in the stew however, was tough - to the point that I need a fork and knife to cut the larger pieces. I found this pretty disappointing, as all you need to make in a stew tender is time. By this point the husband is getting closer to done with his fish and chips, when he gets to the end of the last piece and it is complete mush inside, the batter not cooked and the fish under done to the point of being translucent. This was the only piece like that though, to be fair, and he enjoyed the plate otherwise. But for both of us, to receive dry wings and tough stew, and then feel challenged and disbelieved when returning an item that wasn't up to par, hit us very wrong. Not sure how this experience lines up with their ambition to become a "gastro pub" as their emails proudly proclaimed, but it's a non-starter for us. We sadly won't be going back. read more

Food was a-ok. We stopped by for brunch and the brunch menu was very diverse- it had lots of Irish dishes, English dishes, and random other brunch stuff. My salmon brunch dish was ehh. It wasn't very impressive and the flavors were okay. I would not get this again. My husband had bangers and they were really dry. The waiter accidentally dropped a fork onto my husband's head. I get it- things happen. However, he didn't really say anything except, "can I get you some napkins?" We still tipped him but he should have done something more than "can I get you some napkins"? This place was an utter surprise!!! Loved all the Irish faire including beer selection, entrees and desserts. I don't recommend the fried chicken, but then again why order fried chicken in an Irish pub/Restaraunt. The soup of the day was fantastic and I will go back to try the beef stew. The staff was very friendly and attentive, I would definitely recommend this place. I'm going to have to come back because there are so many options on the menu. I tried a hamburger which was great and bread pudding that was exceptional!! Looking forward to trying their chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy!!! They really have a lot going for this place with lots of comfort food types to try.. But you must leave room for the bread pudding, you have to try it. Well, my friend and I came in for a pre-St. paddy celebrations and we were looking for a traditional Irish dishes- Corned Beef and Ruben! Not that I was fully brought up with it, and last time I was in Ireland. Corned Beef didn't caught my eyes. My experiences of Irish food was rather heavy stews and such. I was pleasantly surprised by this places food, and its friendly hosts and servers. They are all very attentive to our needs. They would checked on ours to see if we need refilled in our glasses or things on our plates. The place can get loud by its regular patrons that seemed to populated this tiny pubs, its very cozy by its sized based on its friendly atmospheres. Just look at the sized of the salad!!! You know that they ain't shy in filled the tummy of the patrons! The fries with the appetizer were pipping hot!!! Loves the fries! And the dip with the dish was delish!! So, this is an unfortunate story. I've loved Dan Diego's for years. Their corned beef and cabbage, their fish and chips, their shepherd's pie, all of it has been superb. The founder and the owners are amazing people who are friendly and caring. Here's the problem, I went there with my son a couple of months back and he ordered the fried chicken, bone in. The chicken came out and was still bloody in the inside. It happens. Not a big deal, remake the order, recook the chicken. Whatever. Tonight, I'm there with friends who have celebrated Dan Diego's for the same number of years that I have. One of them ordered the fried chicken sandwich. A sandwich came out with a big bright pink spot in the middle of the chicken. She is not in a position to take chances with food due to situations that I don't need to make public. They took the sandwich back and said they would heat it up some more but it would come out dry. The lovely lady that is one of the owners brought the sandwich back and explained that the meat is pink because it is near the bone. They do their own fillets of dark meat in house. I get that. However, my friend had already been put off by the pink meat and was not going to eat the sandwich. The cook came out of the kitchen and told us, "We can't just throw away food". Really? Don't tell me what you can't do, tell me what you can do. Don't ever come out of the kitchen and expect to blow shit up a customer's skirt. My friend had already decided she couldn't eat the sandwich because the specter of possible food poisoning was already there. These aren't people who just blew in on the latest train, these are people who have been going to this restaurant since the first week it opened. Is this the way they're treated? Fuck that. I don't know if they're done with Dan Diego's but I am. This is no reflection on our service staff. They performed spectacularly. read more

There was a banner out front that bragged about their being the best fish & chips in San Diego! I can't tell you how many times I'd driven past, and saw that banner! Finally, I said we need to go try this spot out! With the utmost luck we arrived as the first patrons of the day, with our two golden retrievers in tow! We had the best meal, served by the most delightful woman. Well two of them, one I learned who brought our dogs biscuits was the owner, the other a lovely representation of this restaurants vibe! I remember Dawn was a part of her name, and she had every answer I sought, about the menu! We truly enjoyed the fish and chips, my favourite thing was the flake salt on the chips! It was over the top. The fish was divine! My guy had the Caesar with chicken, he said it was one of the best he'd ever had... The fare is tilted Irish, which if you hadn't noticed my last name, I totally fit into that community! I can not wait to go back and try their other offerings! His Highness just walked in asking me what I was doing, when I said writing a review about the restaurant we enjoyed, he retorted I was just thinking of them, and can't wait to go back!!! Then he leaves without even telling us and we had to ask another person working there where he was. Last night my small company had our holiday party here in their private room. It fits 14 people comfortably and had more seats in the patio. The set up was really cute like as if we we were at someone's kitchen. The Charcuterie plate, pickled veggies and olives were so good! The baked breads were so bomb I wrapped some in a napkin and took it home with me. I loved the soda bread, cornbread and garlic bread. That was really addicting. We had a buffet style dinner with fried southern chicken, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and my favorite collard greens. We ended the night off with peach cobbler and yummy ice cream. I think that was our best holiday party yet. The food was just so good I think I forgot about the stress of work. The home cooked, Southern mealmade it worth it. read more

Dan Diego's is definitely one of my favorite local spots in Bay Park/Clairemont. They are run and owned by a local family who pour their heart and soul into their restaurant and it shows. With the homemade food (from scratch!) and extremely friendly staff it's easy to say when you're there, you are treated like part of the family. The food is fresh and the portions are huge. I LOVE the new decor and additions to the food and drink menu (they now serve liquor with their extensive beer and wine)! For dessert... they are known for their delicious bread pudding, but if you're a chocolate fan ask if they have "Patti's chocolate cake." You will NOT be disappointed!! Amazing!!! Such great food at Dan Diego's! We have been several times, every time we visit San Diego. Twice this time! They have recently remodeled and the place looks better than ever. There are new menu items and they now serve liquor. I tried La Llorona which is a margarita made with house made jalapeño infused tequila and it is a great cocktail. They still have lots of beers that rotate. I tried the Forager's Pie which is a Shepherd's Pie but vegetarian. It was filling and delicious. We had several of Patty's desserts, which were amazing as ever. The S'mores one is a must try! The food is just wonderful and the hospitality here is off the charts. This place has ambiance and a great local vibe. It feels like a whole lotta of regulars hit this place and come from around the immediate neighborhood. The parking lot might as well not exist because it only a handful of spots. Park on the street. The beer selection is decent, but did not overwhelm me or impress me. I ordered the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. I enjoyed it, but was turned off that the meatloaf was served with ketchup on it. I wouldn't have put ketchup on it if it was served to me plain. The gravy and mashed potatoes were delicious. Would I go back again? Maybe. Would I go outta my way to go back again? I have been here a few times, always kinda O.K. Shepard's Pies are good and have to give them 4 stars. Today though on St. Patrick's day I gotta bust on them. Ordered the corned beef and cabbage . (Duh). $17, Served in an aluminum take out pan, cheap plastic 'silverware' at the table to eat with, come on ! How about some real silverware and a real plate instead of the drive through crap you are pushing to save a buck, The cabbage was awful, pure white and under cooked and who wants shredded corned beef? Wanted a nice thick slice (I know the menu said shredded but I decided to go with it, way to salty, not rinsed.) with horseradish, not spicy mustard. Up your game! read more
