Here's why I go to Red Cat Coffee at Pepper Place when I roll through Birmingham: 1) drink: The Burmese iced latte has a good balance of vanilla and coconut without being overly sweet. I like my stuff sweet, but not sugary, and this is a repeat order for me. That said, if you're getting a specialty espresso beverage, expect to pay around $6 with tax. I will say that if you leave a tip, it's gonna run you close to or over $7. (Note: I don't know if the baristas are getting paid a living wage, but if they aren't in this economy, that's a shame.) Quite honestly, I am not trying to pay $7 for a drink that will ultimately be diluted by ice, but if Red Cat steps into the light that is coffee ice cubes, I will mourn no m 2) service: on the whole, most of the time I have had good service across different times and different employees. I have never felt unwelcome or disrespected. 3) lost and found, at your own risk: I was in there recently when I noticed a fellow patron had left quite an expensive tech item behind. I shared this info with an employee who promised to retrieve the item. Two hours went by, and this employee did everything but go get the item. Perhaps they were having a bad day and forgot. When I left, I alerted another employee who promptly went and got it for safe keeping. That said, two things: First, we as customers need to be mindful of our belongings and not rely on the goodwill of others. Second, if we do choose to report something missing, I hope that employees will respond more speedily and demonstrate more concern the next time they are approached. 4) ambiance: lots of light, different types of tables for in-person meetings or working by yourself. If you beat the afternoon rush, you'll have a good chance of getting a table near an outlet. That said, come charged up in case you plan to sit outside at a table with an umbrella or you choose a couch. Compared to other coffee shops in the area (cough, mountain brook coffee shops, looking at you, cough), this location gets a diverse crowd coming in. I like to see that people of all different ages and cultures patronize this place. 5) parking: lots of free parking at pepper place. This motivates me to come here over other coffee shops near/in downtown. 6) bonus: they close at six, but occasionally they close early for an event. It would be great if they would tell patrons that when they arrive. I get sad when I come and I settle in only to find out I've got to leave an hour early. First world irritant, but easily fixed, I should think. All in all, that Burmese latte is tasty and I'll certainly be back. read more

I love this coffee shop! I have been coming here for years and the staff members are always so kind. There is a lot of seating inside and outside, so it is perfect if you want somewhere to study/hang out with friends. They also have a lot of outlets so it is easy to find a seat where you can charge your laptop. (Fair warning: the line does get long on Saturday mornings because the farmers market is right outside). The espresso and cold brew here are great. I am not a fan of sweet coffee, so I prefer a plain latte with almond milk, but my friends all love their flavored lattes and matcha. They also have almond, coconut, soy, and oat milk substitutes which is really nice if you're dairy free. If you're feeling hungry for a snack I recommend the house-made granola bars! read more

So first and foremost I have to say that the coffee here is great. If that's what you're looking for then go ahead and order some and you should be more than pleased. The pastries are also high quality and they usually have a nice variety to choose from. Besides that what makes this place awesome is the space itself. High ceilings, lots of space, plenty of indoor seating, some tables outside, and the decor manages to avoid the minimalist approach that you see in a lot of coffee shops without coming off as overdone or cluttered. For such a large space it has a quaint feel to it and it's definitely a good place to kill some time working, meeting friends, or doing whatever it is that you're doing when you're killing time and drinking coffee. Prices are reasonable, and they have punch cards that reward your loyalty with free coffee drinks after a number of purchases, so get one of those whole you're there and don't forget to use it at the railroad park location as well. Absolutely loved Red Cat! The service is great, coffees are perfectly hand crafted and ambience unbeatable. I've always loved their drinks and food and it's a Birmingham staple for a reason. I picked up coffee and breakfast for myself and my roommate this AM and unfortunately their ham & Swiss panini had hairs in it, they couldn't continue eating after finding the third hair (lol). Really love this place and will continue being a customer and tipping service workers (TIP YOUR BARISTAS PEOPLE!) but thought I would let y'all know someone in the kitchen needs a hairnet... love y'all! read more

Coffee and environment are great. Food at this location - I only had breakfast but the eggs are basically fake hotel eggs. And the meat was rubbery frozen turkey patties cut up. Grits were bland and almost sandy. No salt or hot sauce. For the price I would expect real food. This was a bad microwave breakfast bowl. In the past I haven't been much of a "work from a coffee shop kinda gal", but of recent, I may have changed. My supervisor and I needed to work on writing a paper, but we knew if we stayed in the office, we would be distracted and not make any progress. We were planning on working for 4-5 hours, so we knew we wanted to go somewhere with food. So we decided on Red Cat. We got there and settled in and started working. At the time, the volume level was ok (music and people talking), but as the day went on, the volume/# of customers increased, and I found it harder to concentrate! For lunch I decided on the chicken and blue cheese salad. A couple of people at neighboring tables were ordering grits, and they looked SO GOOD, but trying to watch carbs, I opted for the salad. For $9, the salad was pilled high with toppings. So much chicken, cheese, apples, and BACON! a ton of bacon... and bacon wasn't even listed on the menu. So if you don't eat bacon, don't order the salad... or ask for it to be taken off. But if you do like bacon, you'll love this salad. My supervisor ordered a grilled cheese and tomato basil soup. She enjoyed both. By the time we left (3PM), people were staking out our table and waiting for us to leave. This is a super popular place, and I'm sure we'll be back again to continue working on our paper. read more

Loving this original location more than the newer one by Railroad Park. Ample parking on the street outside, plenty of seating inside. Nice and relaxing atmosphere. Darn good lattes and food items on the menu. Great place to go for a read, studying session, or meet up with some friends. Had a couple of their specialty lattes. I have heard of The Red Cat for a year from one of my co-workers who comes to The Red Cat every Saturday morning. We were in downtown Birmingham, in the Pepper Place District and stopped in. Their full coffee menu offerings included French Press, Americana, Latte, Mocha and more. Their Danish options included muffins, crepes, spanakopita and more. The red cat is an awesome cafe located around the pepper place area of Birmingham. It's very spacious allowing for social distancing while enjoying a great coffee and snacks. I had the chicken breast panini and the chicken was out of this world juicy. After something savory I paired a homemade pop tart up with a cold brew. I went outside my usual and got a Burmese latte, which has coconut and vanilla. Life changing! Seriously the best latte of my life! The Bengal iced latte is my new favorite drink. It has two shots of espresso, so it was definitely what I needed for that midday slump. My friend got the Havana Brown, which was also good! Good seating options with tables, couches and stools. There are outlets and power strips so that was handy. The only miss for me was the spotty wifi and limited hours. The space was exactly what we wanted. The bride wanted casual, intimate and fun. At the end of the evening she said it was perfect and she wouldn't change a thing. Tre Luna (HIGHLY recommend) was the caterer. Only one glitch...but it all worked out...the owner mistakingly put down the wrong date. I've been to both the main Red Cat location at Pepper Place, as well as the smaller location at Railroad park. Nice atmosphere, AMAZING coffee!! It is literally my favorite coffee in the state of Alabama! Smooth and well balanced. Much better than Starbucks..or even Ohenrys! If you get a specialty drink, they don't over sweeten it. I have tried 3 of their specialty lattes now: Burmese, Abyssinian, and Persian. All are so good in their own way, but I think if I had to pick a favorite, I would go with the Abyssinian. We came here looking for some coffee and scone, we noticed they had crepes, so we order the Dutch and French one, one blueberries scone and two coffees, the total was around 30 dollars. We wanted to try to it, so wasn't a big deal. The scone wasn't an scone, was more a muffin, a very plastic one, taste was good but still we were expecting an scone. I'm not an expert on crepes but I'm sure is not normal that your fork will bend when you're trying to eat one. They were hard to eat, flavor wasn't great. Coffee was decent I don't have anything to complain about. But for a breakfast with that kind of price they didn't deliver a great product. There's also plenty of parking in front of the coffee shop or in the lot across the street. It's a good spot to study, but it is a pretty popular coffee shop, so make sure to come at a good time! The hours at this location are different from the Railroad Park location, which is the only con. I wish they were open later, but the Pepper Place location is a good place if you want somewhere slightly quieter and roomier than the Railroad Park location. read more
