I love going to this store! They have just about everything you need for wine making, and the prices are competitive with the on-line web sites. I've had great luck with all the items I've purchased, including yeast for fermentation that I used to turn out 5 gallons of amazing triple-berry wine. You'd be surprised at how many products they carry; I've picked up high quality wine bottles, corks, bentonite, fermentation buckets, 5 gallon carboys, a floor corker, and many other items. I don't know her name, but there's a very helpful and friendly girl that works in the store who really knows her stuff and has given me some great tips. They also carry some cheesemaking items, which I am going to check out today. I feel so fortunate that there is a local company here in Reno. Love this place. Fully stocked with everything you need to make beer, wine, mead, even home made rootbeer and soda. The help is very friendly and knowledgeable. After wasting hours on YouTube trying to figure out how to make my home kegerator stop pouring foam, I went there to get first hand advice. The woman there told me exactly what to do and even gave he a how to guide that outlined the steps I needed to take. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I LOVE THE PEOPLE !! I LOVE THE STAFF! They are open during the street construction, so stop thinking about making your own beer wine or cider and just get down there and do it. The store is organized, clean and super easy to find stuff!!you can hang out and have a beer, play some darts or bags.... while you mull over what you want to make. There are tons of recipes all ready for you to choose from and the staff will help you hone in on the one that will fit you me time and taste needs! I got a yogurt culture that did not produce anything resmanembling yogurt. i contacted the manufacturer and gave them the production numbers and they affirmed that it was an old very old culture batch. This place is pretty rad (if you're into brewing and GOOD, rare beer). We opted to try and use a "local" shop for our second-ever brewing experience, and the Reno Homebrewer did not disappoint. Hidden away in the "industrial" section of Reno, next to artsy tile shops and random "new, artsy" condos, the Reno Homebrewer exists. Shelves of hops, malts, sugars, mesh bags, carboys, etc etc line the (rather small) shop. A decent selection of dried fruit and spices exists in the center of the store. On one side, you can find the wine essentials across from a 'fridge stocked with rare beer that I've only seen here. A bar sits in the front of the shop (a place to enjoy those rare beers), where they also ring up your brewing purchases. We wanted a relatively easy brew session and we wanted to follow a store recipe, so we opted to check out the recipes printed out in the back of the store to "build" a Nut Brown Ale. Basically, the recipes line the shelf and then it's up to YOU to walk around the store gathering the essentials. (It's easy-enough, though. Everything is marked remarkably well.) The price was absolutely right and on-par with anything I've seen on More Beer or Midwest Brewing's websites....but you don't have to pay shipping if you buy in-person! The store help was also exceptional. Both workers were super-friendly and not-at-all judgemental, snobby, or anything that might make a new brewer self-conscious about important questions. We bought everything we needed and splurged on a liquid yeast over a dry. We bought a new mesh bag, some new metal caps, and a $10 bottle of Alaskan's 2009 Baltic Porter Ale. Our total came out to about $50 with all of the ingredients we needed, as well as the "extras." (There is a surcharge of about $3 or so to use the credit-card machine. I felt this was a bit steep.) We found out that you can get $2 back if you return the container that the malt extract comes in (clean, of course). I only took off one star because, well, this place is pretty dirty. There was dust pretty much everywhere. I realize that you sterilize your equipment before using it, anyway, but I would expect a brew store to be a bit cleaner. I also didn't like the steep credit card surcharge or the rather high pricing for the bottled beer (Dogfish Head was about $4.25 PER BOTTLE. You can get a 4-pack for almost double that price - even in Tahoe. I'd only buy beer here if you're looking for something super-rare.....the equivalent of seeking out a fine wine for a special occasion; for this, the Reno Homebrewer rocks.) All-in-all, I think this is definitely our new spot for brew equipment and ingredients. It's more fun to pick out your brew stuff in-person and the staff is really nice. I'll be recommending this place to anyone who asks about brewing beer. read more

When pulling up, Reno Homebrewer looks like a loading dock. When I entered through a walk-in refrigerator door I was surprised to find a dozen people hanging out, drinking and talking beer. They are always willing to help you interpret a recipe and will make sure you have everything you need to complete your project. They have a lot more than they list on their website! Grains are fresh, hops are numerous and in pellet, whole, and plug form, and they have a wide array of liquid and dry yeast. Also almost any piece of equipment you could need. There's also wine, cheese, and soda making products. Everyone who works there is incredibly friendly and helpful. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable about all things fermented - beer, cheese, yogurt, kombucha....if you're planning to ferment, come here for advice and supplies! I home brewed a few years back, and then quit for a while, and started again last year. For those who don't know, there are basically two camps of brewer, extract and all grain. Extract is easier and faster, I've done both, but prefer all grain because you end up with a better more personalized beer. If you want to home brew this is the only place in Reno to get supplies, literally, and Rob, the owner is an information booth. Whatever question you might have, he'll usually have the answer. Now I've ordered some hops and yeast online in bulk and saved a couple of bucks, but it behooves you to buy the majority of your supplies here. For one thing, he does a brisk business, so you know with that kind of a high turnover you get fresh grains, hops, yeast and extracts. Also the fact that you can have it now, and get free advice makes this the go to place to get your brewing done the same day. It's located in an industrial area and is totally lacking in décor, as it should be. If you drink good beer, (Budweiser, Coors, and such don't count) You need to learn the art of brewing your own. read more

This place is what a brewing supply store should be like! The father/daughter owners know their stuff and simply breakdown the process, thus you stand a good chance of making some great beers. And their library of recipes is far larger! They will also help you with modifications to tailor your beers to your likes. I should also mention they are friendly and if you saw them outside the store you would make it a point to say hi. Yesterday I went to a competing supplier that is four hours closer. They too only had two people working, but I got very little help. There is also the huge difference in how the recipes are written out. I got my first starter kit here and have had such a great experience! Rob accidentally forgot a yeast pack with the first batch and answered the phone and hooked me up with a packet, despite being closed that day. I have been able to email and ask him questions, which has helped if there is too much info on the Internet. I absolutely love that his kits are down to earth. He suggests the cheap and easy use of bleach and dry yeast, instead of trying to upsell to things I probably don't need. I don't initially get a friendly welcome, but when you ask for help you have their full attention.
