Ordered the general tso chicken and it was extremely salty. I couldn't even finish half of my order. Also one of the workers helped open my box for me and dropped the egg roll onto the counter. He didn't offer to replace the egg roll and just walked away after it fell out. The food here is also pretty pricey so it was a big disappointment. Woof. Welcome to the absolute best Chinese takeout in town. Nothing else tastes this good. Nobody else has ingredients that taste real and fresh like The Rice Box. I've been blown away every time I've been. I've tried a lot of the chicken dishes and stir fried noodles and fried rice and Mongolian beef. All have absolutely been better than I even hoped they would. You guys are killing it with flavors, quality of ingredients, texture, and quantity for the money spent. Confessions of a first time mom: Something has gone wrong here. A couple of months ago, my husband brought home leftovers from Rice Box. I had a few bites, and thought it was pretty decent. So today on our day date, the hubby suggested coming back. The restaurant has an industrial look to it. Rather small as is the parking lot, but has a dog friendly outdoor patio. We placed our order and waited for a while. I had thought this place was fast food Chinese. After a while my husband went up to the cashier inquiring about our order only to realize it had just been sitting there. No one brought it out or called our order. I shouldn't have been surprised. When I looked back I saw one person just texting away on their phone. Another person trying out another customer's potato chips. Yes...service could use some work. It's ok, I thought, because the food is good...at least that's what I remembered. The hubby ordered the orange peel chicken and I had the cumin beef over broccoli. We also shared some wings. The presentation of the dish was excellent, and I was excited to dig in, but sadly everything tasted just mediocre. The orange peel was the same dish my husband ordered the last time he went, but he wasn't impressed by it this time. The cumin beef had such little flavor it was hard to believe any cumin actually went in it. I did appreciate the option of having a broccoli base, but it should have been cooked longer. This is a place where you go for a quick bite after a long 12 hour shift at the hospital. Parking can be a bit difficult, but just find parking right behind Backstreet Cafe and you're golden! I had the orange chicken and my friend had the chow fun! Both of them were great in size (enough for tomorrow's lunch) and flavorful! The orange chicken had actual orange pieces, so it can be a bit too sweet, but nonetheless, I loved it! They both come with an eggroll and fortune cookie. The staff was super nice and the food came out just on time. They have a decent beer selection, in case you feel like grabbing a cold one! I've had Rice Box several times and typically get the chicken chow fun, extra spicy. The meal is always consistent and despite the seemingly small container it comes in, it's truly a lot of food. I can almost never finish it all without hurting myself! A note to you spicy food lovers like me, even though I always order extra spicy, I never feel like the heat is hot enough for me personally. I've also tried their chongquing chicken because I was hoping for something spicier, but didn't love it, so I went back to the trusty chow fun. The beef chow fun is also good and so is the sesame chicken. The size of the pieces of chicken in their dishes are sometimes too large and need to be cut rather than being bite size. I started eating Rice Box when I started attending UH and I fell in love. Unfortunately I switched to night classes and always missed the food truck. I started working at greenway plaza and to my surprise they have a location in the food court. I then found out they had a location on Shepard! I was super excited to visit with my friend after work. First off the location is small and has little parking but we found a spot as soon as we pulled up. The location has an inside and an outside eating area. The inside is counter seating and the outside are large picnic tables. They do have large fans but it's was so hot outside I could not even imagine sitting out there and eating. We came in an ordered, this is you order at the front type location then they call out your name. I had the chow fun with Chinese Sausage and the most amazing apple pineapple cider! The food was delicious but the cider was the highlight of my meal! My friend has the cider also and she was in awe also. We sat down we found two seats inside by the door to the patio and waited for our food. Our food came out quickly one thing to love about Rice Box is everything is made to order and hot. While we enjoyed everything the number one issue that caused us to leave 1/4th into our meal is that it was EXTREMELY hot my friend was sweating up a storm. My hair and dress stuck to me we just could not enjoy our food. We had our egg roll packed up our food and ran to turn the a/c in the car on. It's summer time in Houston noting can ruin a meal more than a hot restaurant. I really hope they get the A/C situation fixed. Until then I will be sticking to To-Go orders. read more

Their menu is pretty self explantory, you choose your rice box and the protein you want with it (also have tofu and cauliflower) and then upgrades (steamed rice comes with all the rice boxes but you have the option to get brown rice, fried rice, or noodles). My boyfriend got the Mongolian Beef and I got the Yang Chow Fried Rice. Flavor was 3/5. It honestly wasn't anything special. For $11 a box, I rather go to Auntie Chang's down the street and get more authentic food. I also tried the Nitro Thai Tea which was actually pretty good. Come hungry! You get so much food with your order it's insane! Definitely worth it! The prices are also really great for the amount of food you get. I think this is their 3rd location (could be the second), but I was impressed with the taste consistencies from the other location. The staff were all super friendly. The guy actually came to our table to take our order (you would typically order in line at the register) but it wasn't packed so I thought that was cool. This location has egg custard buns!!! They are delicious!! Super sweet and so good, so save room for dessert. The owners are Jenny and John and they are always at one of their locations! I ordered food as delivery and it started off good but the more I ate the worst the food tasted. My wife had general tso's chicken and it didn't have the kick that we were accustomed to having. She also said it tasted like it had been sitting out all day. Like it came from a buffet that was about to close. I had chicken fried rice and I'm use to white meat being used and this was cooked with chicken thigh, which I'm not a fan of. This is one of our favorite Chinese places. We often order the chow fun noodles, the green beans and then anything else as a side. The curry rice with an added protein is a meal all on its own, and very good. The egg rolls are good. The to go boxes are always super packed if you will have left overs for days! I wish i could give this 4.5 stars but I can't. It's not a 5 star experience but I feel it's not enough to give them 4. Others may feel the same so I'm rounding up this time. For the life of me, I don't remember what I ordered. I seriously think it's not on the menu at the moment. That being said, I can say with confidence it had brown sauce, with veggies and tofu and fried rice. I added a little chili oil after the fact to give it some heat. I do think their egg rolls are all right...they're not the best I've had, but I wouldn't turn one down. I feel like this is one of those places that is likely to be consistent, but not mind blowing. I enjoyed the cool urban-modern look of the Shepherd location, I love the graffiti wall and all the details and lighting inside. Parking could be an issue as its very limited. It's a small dining area with long tables meant to be shared and there's also a patio. The food is very good street food super flavorful and made with fresh ingredients. We had vegetable dumplings to start with and I really liked the dipping sauce is savory and sour. I ordered the Chow Fun with shrimp mmm mmm! and my husband ordered the Compow Chicken with brown rice it was good too, both come a chicken egg roll. We're definitely coming back here.
