Pretty disoriented staff. Went to pick up a order and after asking a few times they finally admitted it was lost. After asking an employee to check on the order, they snapped at me and claimed the person I was working with before was checking on the order and that's why they never came back. Like why are you going to snap at me when I'm just asking a question because I have no idea what's going on? Remember, it costs nothing to be nice. Some of the staff is pretty respectful. But, for the most part, it's pretty disoriented and difficult dealing with them. They usually cannot handle all the pick up orders coming from everywhere. And it's pretty concerning. I was blown away at how good this place was! It's so hard to find good Chinese here in Texas. The portions were huge and everything we ordered was delicious! I have mixed feelings about this place.. The first time we ordered from The Rice Box, I found not 1 but 2 hairs in my food! Which was unfortunate because it was really delicious. I sent a message to the restaurant and to my surprise, they responded promptly and apologetically, refunded our meal and gave us a gift card to give it another try. We decided to give it another shot a few weeks later which I'm glad we did because it was delicious! Lots of food for a good price and they have great vegetarian options. However, our struggle this time was that we couldn't get delivery for orders over $25? Which seemed pretty backwards to me. We also couldn't use our gift card for a to-go order, which had to be placed online, no orders over the phone. So we had to go in just to give them a chance for redemption. A favorite date spot of mine! The ambiance is great, especially at night. Parking can get a bit hairy on a busy night but that's because the lot is so small. The food is usually great, but sometimes the meat can taste old/reheated. This is an average of two reviews across a couple of visits. The first time, I was there in person not too soon after Rice Box opened. I remember being really impressed by the atmosphere and aesthetic of the venue - a flurry of neon lights, street art, and cool people (I think there was someone filming a music video or something at the table next to us). It felt like we were at a club. I ordered the Sesame Chicken and it came in a large cardboard take-out box that you dump out onto a plate (rice box...I get it!). It was extremely underwhelming in flavor, neither savory or sweet enough, although the quantity was notable. Easily enough for two full meals. 2/5 on try #1. Fast-forward several months, and I found myself getting takeout from Rice Box last night. I got the General Tso's chicken, and it was surprisingly tasty, and the portion size was as massive as I remembered. The meat was juicy with a nice savory-sour crust, with a sticky sauce that clung to every bite and had a mild kick to it. The egg rolls that come with the dish were solid in texture but very, very peppery. 4/5 on try #2. I think Rice Box is a fair bet for American Chinese take-out, especially if you're hungry. No thrills fast Chinese food. This isn't the most authentic but it hits the spot. It's definitely junk food and I love it. The little boxes come PACKED with food and all meals come with an egg roll. I ordered the shrimp fried rice (made it spicy) and it did not disappoint, the burn is so good. I hadn't been to rice box since back when it was parked in front of poison girl. The portion sizes are HUGE and the price is great for the amount of food you get. Most entrees range $10-12 and could easily feed two people, or give you plenty of leftovers! The sweet and sour chicken was tasty and the sauce has a nice flavor. The chicken was crispy, but not too dry. The pepper steak was good for the first few bites, then it kind of got a little boring. But we got that dish with fried rice instead of white rice, and that was definitely a good choice to liven up the dish. We enjoyed the food and would definitely come back, but it wasn't quite enpugh of a wow factor to get 5 stars. Definitely going to come back to try the green beans and beef and broccoli! The green beans were very flavorful, wasn't a fan of the battered covered tofu but that's just because I don't like battered tofu otherwise the tofu was tasty as well. Been going to the Rice Box since the food truck days at UH and Montrose. The recent location in River Oaks always catches your eye with a ton of neon as you pass the S curve. Anyway, it's great Chinese fast food. Classic dishes you're familiar with and multiple options to customize with meats, sides, rice etc. Quantity of the dishes is plentiful, my wife and I always have enough to save for later. Big plus for late night snacking. Order online to avoid the line. The food is usually ready within a few minutes so it's piping hot for the drive home. My go-to is the General Tso or sesame chicken. General if you're feeling a bit spicy, sesame if you're feeling a little sweet. Sauce goes perfect with white rice, plus you get an egg roll. For drinks, try the Thai tea on nitro, light fizz in a classic Thai tea. Parking is bit cramped but you can usually find a spot in the lot or on the street after a try or two. There are people constantly coming in and out. Also, the place is a local hotspot for modified cars. Spend a weekend afternoon chilling at the window (when lockdown is over, of course), and you'll see lots of nice rides coming in and out. read more
