During my Northwest Sojourn I was fortunate enough to layup for the night in The Dalles after my drive in from Boise. Surprisingly impressed with the eastern Oregon landscape. Anyway, took a morning walk through the town and up into the surrounding neighborhoods where I happened on this Gem of a place. A converted Church. Had an Americano and an excellent egg muffin sandwich. Homemade muffin highlighted a very tasty and perfect combo of egg, bacon, cheese... highly recommended. Pretty small portions but ok pricing. Food was tasty. Cute little chapel setting. Ordered a breakfast burrito and biscuits and gravy with two drip coffees. Greeted with nothing but smiles in this cozy old Chapel Café. We were given great opinions for breakfast by the Barista, and a run down of the different coffees they served. From talking great, to looking great, and tasting great- we were more than pleased. There was a little mix up in the kitchen with one of several orders BUT, the staff was so kind about it. They left the extra food and offered the original order for free. As we kindly declined because it was so yummy either way, a second person came out to apologize and show their kindness as well. Not something you see a lot. Tried to go back a second day I'm a row but sadly they were closed. This is a great spot if you're looking for a great start to a great day. plan to go here 30 to 40 minutes before you actually want to eat. we haven't been to the riv since 12/2023 because the service was poor, at check-out they request a 15% tip to bus your own table. there are no free refills on anything except water. you end up spending $30 to $40 for a breakfast that's lackluster. they were out of chicken, and any Benedicts, on a Sunday. I understand that some people don't show up for shifts but if the kitchen is slow, communicate that to your customer. if the people working the register had been upfront about the slow kitchen, we would have been given an option whether to stay and wait or to leave. read more

I've eaten here twice now but only for take-out so i'm not yet qualified to comment on the full experience. The food is very high quality, and the prices are... adequate for that level of quality, a bit beyond my budget. The service is wonderful, but is it sustainable? I didn't get quite what i wanted but i take that to be a communication problem i just wasn't in the mood to sort out at the time. The owner and his wife are front and center to give you a really personal and atmosphere-enhancing experience. I'll revisit this review after i try dine-in. They go above and beyond with presentation but could spend a little more attention on texture. The chicken/waffle sandwich was very good but not a sandwich at all.. i had to eat it with the provided fork because there's no way it would stay together in my hands, which meant there was extra waffle and lettuce left over ( because it's hard to proportion equally with a fork between five or so layers of different ingredients ) and that meant some of it was waste because those flavors don't work together alone. I know they'll pay more attention now, though, because i know they really care. :) I give 3 stars for ordinary experiences, not 5 like most people. Read my other reviews and you'll see my praise is hard-earned, and 4 stars is above average, as it should be. read more

If there's one coffee shop in The Dalles to stop at, it's here. The staff is incredibly friendly and talented - passionate about high quality food and coffee. They accommodated a specialty sandwich to be vegetarian. Delicious. With the occasional live musician and otherwise calm music, the ambience of this spot is my style. What a find! Fantastic brunch with many vegan options. The avocado toast came with beautiful chunks of avo and thinly sliced cucumber; the porridge was a big surprise with lots of vanilla; and we loved the Rise and Shine smoothie! What a pleasant surprise. Not a big menu, but great food regardless. We walked in the front door of the church and almost didn't think we were at the right place. There's not a fancy sign or anything, but just keep walking all the way to the back. We got a chef salad, and the fried egg (instead of hard boiled) was an amazing idea. I know other places have probably done that as well, but it was the first time I've tried it that way! Great portion, and I was very satisfied. If we ever pass through again, we'll probably stop at the Riv! Honorable mention: There's an old fashioned organ in one of the bathrooms. Very tempting to play! read more

They always make my Arnold palmers with the perfect lemonade to iced tea ratio which makes me think: are they baristas or wizards? it's the perfect working and crocheting environment. Beautiful and unique place to stop for lunch on our way to the coast. This over 100 year old church was spotless and the food delicious! It would have been nice to sit outside on the patio but not when it was 108 outside!! I had the Ode to Thankfulness and it was delicious with the turkey, cranberries and pecans. My husband ordered the First Love chicken sandwich - a large piece of friend chicken with Buffalo sauce on a bun with the fixings. Yummy! Our grandmas order the Cobb Wild salads and they enjoyed it - almost like a breakfast on a salad! If I'm ever in The Dalles again we will be stopping here again! read more

Riverenza was just what we were looking for! If you are passing through or staying in the Dalles, stop here. The atmosphere is quaint and service friendly. We love the old church turned community space. We enjoyed meeting Noah, the Riverenza manager. He can make a mean Gibraltar! ;) Riverenza means "reverence" in Italian. This place has been serving the community for the past decade. We are grateful to have found this little gem in the gorge. The Vanilla latte was delicious and breakfast hit the spot--an egg and sausage sandwich and the ranch hand sandwich. We spent awhile on the patio, enjoying the first day of summer by reading books and drinking coffee, surrounded by the thick honeysuckle plants. Can't wait to come back. read more

Neat place in an old church's little off the beaten path but not too far. When you walk in main entrance you will likely have second thoughts. You feel like you are walking into a church hall or the like. But the food was very good. I got a gyro and my customer got a panini of some sort. Both quite tasty. Outstanding! Have eaten here every weekend for a month. Fantastic breakfasts. The BEST in The Dalles, by far. Their handpies are some of the best I have ever eaten. My favorite so far is the strawberry. Wow. Serious deliciousness. Have not been disappointed with anything I've ordered. Tried their tomato soup this weekend with a chicken curry wrap and it was absolutely terrific. I only wish the smoothies were a little cheaper so I could afford them more regularly. read more

I like the rivs food very much . We came in on a Sunday 3 -12-23 around 1:40 and we were told the kitchen was closing . I find that very odd and they were putting up chairs . So we went to mamma janes at 1:50 they also close at 2pm but had no problem with us coming in and sitting down for breakfast read more

My first visit to the riv. Initial impression is favorable. I arrived at 2pm and asked for breakfast. They had no problem serving breakfast at this time of day. The building looks to be an old church-very interesting and unique. The interior Decor inside is plain and spacious. I ordered an egg with bacon cheese and avacado. The portion size is on the small side but the ratio of egg to other items was spot on and the favor is fantastic. Very good food. I will be back to "test" other menu items but by all accounts this is a rare treat in The Dalles and one I'll be returning to. read more

This place is Amazing! So glad we stayed in the neighborhood that this GEM is tucked away in! The food was delicious and Aestheticly pleasing to the eye! I have yet to be disappointed here; And I know that even 5star establishments mess up sometimes (usually with grace and minimal impact to the patrons). I digress. I love The Riv. I freely admit I was suspicious and leery as I was a big fan of the previous owners (The Riverenza), and I was not excited about something good being tampered with. But I can say with confidence that this place is a NEW (not so new anymore) GOOD THING! The coffee is skillfully crafted, the food is quality, thoughtfully planned and executed. I have enjoyed every special they serve when they have evening events - like "Friday Night With Ben". The food is adventurous but classic (and not like down home country fried classic, but like classic dishes with agreeable twists). Love that it is a family business, and there's always a quiet sweet precious wee bebe on someone's hip, just loving life.
