We ordered the beef carpaccio, oysters, jerk chicken flatbread, fries and calamari and we were stuffed. The patio is beautiful with natural lighting and florals everywhere. Our server was attentive followed up with us when we wanted to order more drinks. One of my friend's drinks had a hair in it and they replaced the drink and comped it. They do have a time limit of 2 hours for the reservation which is fine, however, they continuously remind you of how much time is left throughout the seating which is bothersome since we had no intention of going over our time. read more

So I go Friday night with my husband to happy hour for the roof...walk in..talk to the hostess. I say that I want happy hour, she asks if I have a reservation, I say no. She then says she needs information from me before she can seat me. She wants my name, my phone number..meanwhile being interrupted by other employees... Meanwhile, 14 people just pass us and go up the elevator to happy hour, one of the couples that went up was told by the OTHER hostess, just go on up you don't need a reservation. I counted them... 14 people. When she finally gets all of my personal info that nobody else had to cough up, she gets on an iPad and the, tells me...oh we don't have any availability up there anymore. Gee I wonder why, since you needed all this info and let FOURTEEN people that were behind me just "go on up". I walked almost a mile from my hotel to go to this happy hour...completely unacceptable!! I live in wine country and work in a large urban city known for its food. I don't understand why the overall rating for The Roof isn't higher. Best meal of our time here in Vancouver. From the Old Fashioned (appropriately strong) to the crab cake (fresh with perfect tartar sauce), to the Halibut (light with a subtle flavor profile from the accompanying vegetables) to the phenomenal butter cake, we ate so incredibly well tonight. Christina may have provided the best service we've experienced so far in downtown (and maybe anywhere recently?) and we loved the rooftop vibe and decor. The ONLY complaint was a lot of noise where we were sitting. Highly recommend across the board. read more

I came for a birthday happy hour session and sat by the bar. It was a delight to take in the buzz of the kitchen and the pretty atmosphere they've created on the rooftop patio. Oh, and the service was great! It's good to note that the roof is retractable and there are heaters for the colder months. We ordered the calamari to nibble on and drinks. It was a tasting of cockatils with Margaritas, Red Sangrias, Elderflower Collins and a Golden Spritz. We came for happy hour to the roof on a Thursday. Most of the tables were full but we were able to get a spot. I always love the view up at the Roof because you can see the Fairmont from there. We ordered the Wagyu beef carpaccio, the ahi tuna tartare and the oysters. For cocktails we got the sangria and Prosecco. The Wagyu beef carpaccio was lacking in beef flavour. It was cut a little too thin for me to pick up (just a snag). The tuna tartare was not bad. Very fresh tasting and I liked the addition of the pineapple. The chip went perfectly with the tuna tartare. The oysters were pretty standard. The sangria was delicious as usual. Overall for happy hour they have a pretty big menu compared to other restaurants. They have a wide variety and the portions are pretty big. The service was super friendly and helpful when it comes to making decisions on the menu. Stopped by for brunch with some friends on Saturday afternoon. We were greeted by friendly faces and took the elevator up to The Roof. Unfortunately, the weather was gloomy and drizzly, so we didn't get to experience the patio without the roof, but it was decorated beautifully nonetheless! Our highlight was the calamari - it was cooked and fried so perfectly. The bites were soft all the way through, no rubbery texture at all. The flatbread was also decadent, but I did kind of wish it had some kind of hot honey drizzle, however that is my personal preference. The mussels were also delicious with its slightly spicy kick, and the bread it was served with was perfectly crisp, while light on the inside. Surprisingly, the beet salad was the most underwhelming of the appetizers. I didn't have the oysters myself, but my friends seemingly enjoyed them. My main was the Ahi Tuna, as pictured. The serving size was generous, however I would say it was a bit underseasoned for my liking. Perhaps because the cut is quite thick, it would benefit from a bit more in seasoning to ensure each bite feels catered to. I tried to have it with the drizzled sauce, but it was not *quite* enough. We also had a bottle of Riesling at the table. Our server was really kind and attentive, and stopped by periodically to ensure our glasses were filled. My friends had the Negroni and Passionfruit Margarita, which they both quite enjoyed, but will set you back ~$18-19/drink as fine dining does. They're also quite stiff at 2-2.5oz/drink! My boyfriend surprised me for my birthday and brought me here. He said dress fancy and I'll blindly lead you to dinner. He had me put Burrard street on the GPS and when we walked in, he turned to the ladies behind the desk and said "the reservation at 8 for the roof please." It's been a while I've been to the Rood for dinner. (I honestly prefer their happy hr) - side note, it's cheaper to get the fried Mac & cheese sticks from the regular menu vs the HH menu. Also the HH food downstairs was better than the food we got at the Roof. Tuna tartare was good, but the potatoes seemed a little stale so we asked for another batch which was much crispier. The mussels weren't good at all. Fishy. They said maybe it was due to the sauce and where the mussels were from, but we could not eat it so we had to send it back and they were very understanding. Steak, ribeye, ordered med rare ish but was very chewy. I know we are supposed to order ribeyes mor medium to render the fat, but still thought it was pretty chewy. At Dine Out Vancouver at Black and Blue (nearly a decade ago), the waiter had proudly told me about the under-construction rooftop and told me I should return soon to try it out. You can imagine my excitement when my fiancé made reservations for The Patio for our belated Anniversary celebration (we had to book a few weeks in advance, it fills up that fast). The Roof has a stunning WOW factor. Fireplaces line the entranceway, there are hanging greenery everywhere to give the feeling that you are (almost) in your own trendy oasis with a full bar and open kitchen. The staff are very attentive and we ended up getting a complimentary glass of champagne because it was our anniversary. The menu boasted a generous selection of appetizers, non-steak mains and (of course) the steak mains. For mains, the fiancé ordered the Striploin, while I had the Tenderloin. I devoured the Tenderloin and tried (and failed) to compare when taste testing the Striploin. Honestly, to my untrained palette both steaks were mouthwateringly delicious. You had the option to add steak sauces, but I'm glad I declined. The steak was tender and delicious without the sauce; to me that is a mark of a great chef. Sides (as we discovered) are ordered separately. I do see the appeal for being able to order the steak on it's own, as well as the appeal of mixing and matching the sides. We chose the Sautéed Mushrooms and Broccolini, and it felt like a nice way to share more of the meal together (versus just having our own individual plates of food). Hard to describe the mushrooms, to me they had that perfect little bit of bounce (versus being soggy), and the broccolini was crisp and crunchy. Overall, it was a perfect evening (covered patio was a bonus for dealing with the downpour) and a great way to say "cheers" to another year. There were only two downsides. 1) Camera did not work as well in the dim light, and 2) No room for dessert! (Ok ok, a problem with my camera and with my stomach, not with the restaurant). read more

I have wanted to go here since it opened and I finally got my chance on a hot August night last week. It's so pretty up on the roof, although quite toasty until the sun finally started to go down. We started with some appetizers and drinks, I had the prawn cocktail and Prosecco which was perfect for a hot evening. For my main dish I opted for a salad with grilled prawns and a white wine. My friends had the rib eye with Brussel sprouts, mashed potatoes and a Cesar salad. It was all absolutely delicious! Very disappointed with my visit to The Roof (on top of Black and Blue). We were seated right next to the speaker which was blasting music. I had asked the host at the front to switch to a quiet table near the street end of the restaurant, but the waitress moved the wrong table to the table I had requested. The host asked me in an aggressive tone if he wanted me to ask them to move, but I declined as I felt uncomfortable by his tone of voice. We ended up switching to a different table but the music was still fairly loud. I finished my initial glass of water and the waitress filled up a new glass with what looked to be water and some sort of fat. It had circles of floating oils at the top of the glass of water, so I requested a new one. We ended up ordering a few oysters off of their happy hour menu, as well as the tuna poke. The oysters were good, but the tuna was served very warm. The customer service and experience really affected the visit. We were unsure at first as the weather is chilly but when she said that it's enclosed and heated, we thought we'd check it out. You get on the elevator and look and behold, it's now a different name -- The Roof. Fireplace was not only a nice touch but a very welcome one for a cold weather. The menu seems to be the same as the downstairs black and blue. Don't know why they named it differently. Upstairs is a more relaxed and casual atmosphere. Happy hour starts at 2:30pm which is earlier than most places. It's nice that they have an extensive selection of happy hour items. For the drinks, we got the grapefruit negroni and the Meyer lemon whiskey sour. Both were good. We got mussels with fries, shrimp phyllo with baby eggplants, steak frites, beef short ribs with sishito peppers and fresh oysters. We enjoyed all the items except for the flank steak. Good value and portion. Oysters were fresh (liked the kushi more than the daily special but both were good). Service was also efficient. Love the happy hour here! It can be hard to get a table when it's super busy though and it looks like they just changed their happy hour hours to 2:30pm - 5:30pm (previously 3-6pm). Kale and artichoke dip $11 - did not arrive as how I expected but it was sooo good! I highly recommend this one. It's a unique take on the usual spinach and artichoke dip. Crispy calamari $10 - it was indeed crispy. I'm usually disappointed with calamari but I happily enjoyed these, size was a bit small though. One of the "it" places to be for patio happy Hours. The rooftop patio is called The Roof and the indoor dining area is called Black and Blue. Although they are the same restaurant, they have different names depending where you want to sit. I'm not really sure why, but I'm just guessing it's easier for people to determine where they want to eat or maybe it's the cool thing these days. The Roof can get quite chilly on a cloudy day so ask the staff to turn on the heat lamps. It's a comfortable place to enjoy a few drinks and snacks after work as well as a prime people watching spot. The menu is 50% off during happy hour so we may have over indulged. Besides our massive drinks order, we shared the mac n cheese bars, smoked salmon pizza, jerk chicken pizza, calamari, fresh oysters, mussels and phyllo prawns. Our favorites were the mussels, phyllo prawns and calamari. Happy hour is only from 2:30PM-5:30PM, so get there early. read more

I stopped by here after work for some happy hour snacks and drinks but we were so full after that we ended up just getting frappuccinos rather than a real meal! The phyllo shrimps were so unique and crispy while the mac and cheese sticks were indulgent and satisfying. The ahi tuna appie was sort of like what you would get at a Japanese restaurant and the sliders were just a bit disappointing. We also decided to try their happy hour drinks and we preferred the strawberry one over the lychee one. ($5 drinks!) Anyways, the service was great but the patio was extremely loud and we could barely hear each other. We were in an out within an hour because the food was made so quickly but apparently the patio's seating time maximum is only 90 minutes anyways. We went Sunday after getting a last minute reservation from seeing it on the list of the best rooftop bars/eateries. The vibe was definitely nice upstairs, but I didn't feel relaxed with the screaming kids next to us. We also went for drinks and dessert and the waitress seemed disgusted by the fact that we didn't come there to order a super expensive steak. I don't eat meat, nor do I like eggplant or mushrooms (only vegetarian options), so I was a pass. We did order appetizers though and ended up getting more than planned. Our bill was $195 and we gave a nice tip. We saw the waitress walk over to another gal working there and give a nasty look while shaking her head. We both assumed it was because we didn't spend double or triple that, which I'm sure their used to. There is an elevator to take you to the "Roof". (You can take the stairs)."The Roof" is covered and heated very well. No need for blankets at all. If you sit at the bar be prepared for the occasional smoke out by the Wood Fire Grill. Simple solution for that...don't sit at the bar but ORDER from the grill...HA!!! Genius. I noticed right away they do NOT use Alberta beef, it is from PEI, apparently because it is of higher quality. We enjoyed the slider trio during the famous Glowbal happy hour (3-6pm everyday, 50% off appies) One had huge chunks of bacon and blue cheese. Another had housemade BBQ sauce with red wine. The beef was grilled to perfection and the bread was soft and tasty. The prawns...HOLY GEEZ.. they get that big? Those were some biiiig, prawns. And the cheese that they use for the Mac & Cheese sticks. Like yumm...,I think it takes MAc & Cheese to another dimension. Came here on a Saturday night. My friends had reserved us seats at the bar. It was crowded, but didn't interfere with the service which was exceptional. After a number of Mai Tai's , has a shared pitcher of white Sangria, it was time to order. I had the Steak Salad - it was amazing ! It was grilled to my request ( tender on the inside charred on the edges ) and the salad part was a very unique combination of pea greens, cucumbers, cilantro, carrots and bean sprouts. It was perfection. I ordered some bread on the side and if was a large portion of crispy goodness. Desert was the Creme Brullie with macaroons on the side. A few more drinks and off we went. The house white ($5) is a chardonnay blend. It's quite sweet. Not dry. Much like moscato. Overall 4/5 Crispy calamari ($9.95) are tender strips of squid rather than the overly chewy garbage that some places serve. The seasoning was good, just a tad salty. Overall 4.5/5 El pastor taco ($3.95) a minuscule soft taco not worth the price. 2/5 Artichoke dip ($9.95) is quite large. The bread is soft and the dip has ample cheese. 5/5 Ahi tuna poke stack ($9.95) is small but the miso misago is amazing and the ahi tuna is fresh. The wonton chips are good especially with the poke on it. The only thing I'd change is to remove the coconut pieces- luckily they're not very strong and they're used sparingly but they dont be long with ahi tuna. Overall 4.5/5 Wagyu beef carpaccio ($9.95) is a decent portion. I'm not a fan of the blue cheese on it but the aiolo sauce and garlic knots were yummy. I tried to bring a group of colleagues to The Roof for happy hour. When I called, the hostess told me they don't take reservations. At best they could reserve us in the main restaurant and then take us to the patio if there was room. I was disappointed because we specifically wanted to be on the patio and The Roof has a much better happy hour than Black&Blue. But I was willing to take the chance that we would get patio seating. Then they told me that there was a minimum charge of $500.00 for large groups. ??!!??!! For my group of 14, that works out to $35.00 per person! During happy hour, with discount drinks, it's like they're forcing us to get drunk. And with several of my colleagues being light drinkers, the rest of us would have to have 4 or 5 drinks which is irresponsible since we only plan to be there about 2 hours. THEY WON'T GUARANTEE A RESERVATION BUT THEY'LL GURANTEE A $500.00 TAKE FOR THEMSELVES ! This obnoxious policy has lost them my business and I have lost my appetite. read more

Came here for the happy hour after scouring for some decent mac n cheese options (I blame the pregnant cravings). During happy hour, their mac n cheese sticks with truffle cheese dip are $4.50! There's also a lot of other great snack options including smoked salmon flat bread for $8.50, or ahi tuna screamers for $8, or beef sliders for $6.50. Despite our low spend, the service here was fantastic. They ensured our water glasses were full all the time and checked up on us often. The mac n cheese with the dip was delicious (4 sticks), but the two on the bottom sat in a pool of oil so they were super greasy. I'd recommend doing a plate tilt right away or soaking up some of the oil early on. The tuna screamers were good too - but heavy on daikon as opposed to tuna. Flavour-wise, it hit the spot! And here's the kicker, here's where they earned the extra star. So when the bill came, we paid with a gift card we had. Turns out, the card came from Costco, so it was purchased at a discounted rate. And it says on the back that you can't combine it with any promotions. Since we got the card as a gift, we didn't realise this, and thus a confusing 10 minutes ensued of us trying to understand why we couldn't use a gift card which we thought was as good as cash. The staff were extremely understanding of the situation (I guess they'd gone through it a few times), and offered up a reasonable work-around for us. What could've been a really pregnant grumpy moment turned out to be better than expected. Our server was FANTASTIC (I think her name was Lia?) and I would go back just to see her! So if you're looking for good food options for happy hour in a nice setting with great service, I would recommend The Roof. Just don't come if you've gotten your gift card from Costco. And if you don't know if your GC is from Costco, check the back - it'll say in the fine print you can't use it with promotions. Helpful tip!
