We went for the Sunday Jazz. The place was nearly packed and the servers were working hard attending to all the tables. They were generally very friendly but they could barely keep up with the crush of guests. They could have used one more person to help in the dining room. The food is acceptable, but nothing special. Not crazy about the round metal trays they use to serve your food instead of ceramic plates. These trays resemble inverted garbage can lids. Maybe if they were shaped like over-sized sardine cans it would make sense, but I just don't get the sheet-metal food platters. (They appear galvanized, so maybe a bit of zinc in every bite?) I ordered fish and chips -- big mistake. The fish had absolutely no flavor. The chips were good though. I ordered Cajun style, which I guess means they sprinkle paprika on them. The clam chowder was OK. My wife ordered the crab sandwich, which was decent -- just not great. The bottom line: the food is a bit pricy for the quality and taste. But if you're going to enjoy the Jazz or spend time with friends, do go, just don't have high expectations for the food, even though the prices rival those south of Market in SF. read more

I'm not quite sure why I've never reviewed the sardine can so let me get this in right now. The sardine can it's sort of a hidden treasure as it's a nice hidden place on the waterfront with really good food. I love all the options and I recently visited for Sunday breakfast. I had never been for breakfast before and was pleasantly surprised with the menu options and how delicious the coffee omelettes and potatoes were. The service is always good I totally recommend you check it out and don't forget about it like I sometimes do. read more

I have always enjoyed the marina views and the seafaring decor at the Sardine Can along with the usual tasty food. But this morning's breakfast was outstanding! The food was served piping hot. The eggs were done perfectly. The potatoes were crispy and brown on all sides. The other items served were completely delicious. I was so impressed! We had dinner here last night and was very disappointed with some of the good reviews. It looks like the other reviewers do not understand what is considered good food. The service was slow since it took over 30 minutes to get our food when they were not very busy. Then in came a group which made it very this small restaurant very noisy. Got sick turns out it wasn't just me my friend got sick too, guess who recommended she get the crab sandwich. Came here on a Saturday afternoon. We had, the crab sandwich, fish and prawn combo, clam chowder and my kid had a corn dog. We have read reviews about this place so my husband and I split the orders in case something was really bad. About the clam chowder, there were specks of clams, seems like they used can clams and adds so many herbs to cover the can taste. I did enjoyed the crab sandwich, and the macaroni salad was on point. However, the fish and prawn combo need some work. The fish was fresh but it was such a shame that it was not drained, the lettuce it sat on was drenched with oil. The prawns were perfect but the cod was under cooked. I'm giving this place 3 stars instead of 2 because the service was good and my Bloody Mary was on point. But I don't think I will be coming back here. It's such a shame, if the cooks would just drained that fish I would be back. read more

First time here yesterday. Came in around 11 o clock on a Sunday and it wasn't busy at all. My boyfriend and son came and the waitress heard my son crying so she came with a bowl of fruit for him. So sweet :) the younger waitress came to take our order but what I wasn't too fond of was that she didn't have a notepad to write down our order. You could tell that she was kind of having a hard time to remember what we just had told her. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and my boyfriend ordered the bacon cheese sandwich. It took pretty long to get our food and it wasn't busy so I'm not sure why we waited. The food was okay, maybe I should have ordered something seafood because that's one of their specialties. Love this place for the fish and prawn combo. The women that work here are so attentive and amazing. I don't know her name, but she is consistently our server. So nice to have a place in Vallejo by the water that doesn't just cater to regulars, but anyone that walks through the door. I only wish they had the outdoor seating with a waterfront view. This is the first restaurant I tried after moving to Vallejo a few months ago and I just keep coming back! Food is always tasty and the service is good too. It does get busy sometimes on weekends but staff is very accommodating. I usually go for the fried oysters and clam chowder every time but have tried the linguini and clams as well as the cioppino and both dishes were excellent. I just left and had horrible service. My server never came back after I asked for water, napkins. There was no silverware either. I waited after I even got my food and had to get up and ask for things myself. The server was folding napkins in the front and totally forgot about me. My appetite was ruined and got up again and asked for a to go box even though I didn't want my sandwich anymore and fries were cold. It was overpriced. I got up and also asked for the bill. I mentioned to the girl the incidences and she said sorry but I don't know how she makes tips. I did not tip her and I will never go there again. Wonderful place to go to during the week the crab salads are to die for. The owner is wonderful have been dining here since 2010. But on the weekend the service is awful has gone down tremendously. The waitress has forgotten our orders on several occasions. Just recently tried to call to place a pick-up order they left me on hold for 15 minutes I could hear them talking in the background.. Call back and line was busy for over 45 minutes. Evidently she forgot she put me on hold and left the phone off the hook . Oh, never again... I thought this would be a great place to take the relatives for a nice dinner with a view. I remembered that it had been pretty good the last time we were there. Walk in to picnic tables, nice ambiance. Only one other couple there but every table was dirty. Our server wiped one down for us and we read the menus. The vinyl table cloth was so sticky that our arms were sticking to it. Okay, I will admit, you aren't supposed to order steak at a fish place but I made that mistake. When my 6 oz ribeye steak came it was still cold. I ordered it medium rare but it was still cold and raw. I had it sent back and it came back hot. So did my veggies and my potato. I guess they microwaved it. Anyway this steak was only about 1/4 inch thick so it wouldn't be that hard to get it cooked. I had three good bites of it and that was all the meat there was-the rest was fat. I figured out of 6 ounces probably 2 of them were meat and the rest gross wobbly fat. The silverware they provided were cheap and bent when I cut my dinner. All in all, I was embarrassed with the whole thing, and I was sorry I brought my family there. I won't go back again. Cute location but dirty and bad food. Maybe that is why we were the only ones there. We should have walked out instead of paying 100.00 for 4 people. read more

My husband & I were born & raised in Vallejo and make a point of patronizing Vallejo establishments. We will give credit where credit is due, good or bad. We have eaten at the Sardine Can for years, and use to eat here at least once a month for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Today, this review is for their dinner & service. I have to note first that when we arrived that there was a large, happy & loud group on the deck outside so we nixed the idea of sitting outside. I honestly can say that service was BAD and went down hill from the time we walked in (dinner was not much better). Usually the servers would recognize you when you stepped into the door way and say "Sit wherever you want." None of this happened for several minutes. Finally one of the servers slipped out from the kitchen area, crossed in front of me & proceeded to key in an order without any acknowledgement. Finally she looks up and said "oh, yeah. You can sit anywhere." And returned to her computer. Really made you feel welcome, NOT! It took 10 minutes before the server brought us menus and another 15 before my husband received his mixed drink and my glass of water. I guess she didn't see the aspirin that I had sitting out on the sticky table. We should of got up & left but considering we just left church to have dinner we would give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. My husband ordered his usual clam strips dinner with a side salad. I ordered the fried shrimp (& was promptly corrected by the server that it was fried prawns) & baked potato with butter. 15 mins later salad arrives & within mins we rec'd our main meal. My husband had just barely started with his salad. My baked potato was served loaded so my husband had to catch the attention of the server that it was served wrong. Server came back 5 mins later with a new potato that was barely warm. Prawns had cooled off while waiting for a new potato. PLUS prawns were too greasy for my liking. They were sitting on a lettuce leaf that was covered in oil. Needless to say I couldn't finish my dinner. I would say that this was just a night that the service was off, but there was a table of 4 behind us that complained to the server regarding their food this same night. I know the 2 servers were overwhelmed with the outside group (as the inside was not packed, there were several vacant tables) but customer service and food needs to improve before I could ever recommend this place. read more

It wsd 80 degrees in their little lean-to shed aka dining room with no AC. Dinner finally came. Did she bring napkins and silverware? Of course not! Had not been to Sardine Can in about 1 year but I had friends over from L..A. and I wanted to share a sort of "downhome" restaurant with them. I read several posts and I was concerned that change of ownership might have affected quality. Well. I needen't have worried. We got there around 12:30PM. We had a terrific experience. The waitress was very attentive. The tables were clean and as people left the restaurant tables were immediately cleaned. The weather was beautiful, mild and clear. We had Fish and Chips; the captain's plate and bowls of clam chowder. It was all absolutely delicious. Bar none, some of the best fried fish I ever had. Scallops on captains plate was terrific. The portions where huge so we needed doggie bags. Others in the restaurant had great looking hamburgers and dungeness crab sandwishes which they raved about....So for me, it's a what's not to like day. My wife loves this place but last sat night was a complete miss. We arrived at 6:00 p.m. and only one other couple was there . I ordered the captains platter- fried beer battered shrimp, cod, scallops and oysters-the batter just fell of because the cook just dumped the fish from the fryer onto a bed of lettuce-yuck. It was so greasy it would drip when I picked it up, and oh the rice pillaf was like sticky rice. I've fried a lot of fish and you have to drain it before you plate it -come on clown. I'm hoping the cook was new and short term, I'll try it next time in town cause the wife enjoys this place but I hope they get back to what they once were. read more

LOVE this place. The food is awesome. There are always great specials. I've tried many different entrees here before but the crab and avocado sandwich, though pricey, is to die for. And it's worth every penny. The fries are perfectly crispy, and the ranch is the best. I'm kind of a ranch snob. The atmosphere makes this place though. I was not impressed with this restaurant. The waitress was very good, but the food was not good at all. My 1st order of a crab sandwich, I had to send back. I replaced that oder with fried shrimp which was pretty good, but took a long time to receive. My bottom line is I would NOT return to this restaurant which could use some sprucing up, and a better menu. read more
