Great place to go for Salmon Croquettes and eggs on a Saturday morning. I have gone there often for fish and grits as well. Its one of the few places here in Los Angeles that make this combo, and one of the even fewer that do it well. If you are into gluten free this and that, this ain't the restaurant for you. My eggs were fresh and sunny up but not runny, these came with on huge fluffy waffle. The Waitress Kenisha was just super, she kept coming by with coffee and made sure everything I needed was taken care of. The whole staff there is all about business but are courteous and quick. Never yet to have a bad meal there. The croquettes were seasoned well and needed nothing, tender and beautiful. That being said a regular 45 minute wait and a lengthy search for parking is quite a deterrent to such wonderful meals. We have been there many times and had to move on because we couldnt find parking. Wouldnt it be wonderful if The Spoon found a much larger location and had their own full size parking lot? Even better if they purchased the whole building and lot they. Even if they moved they have such a loyal following that they would lose few if any long time clientele. Do I recommend The Serving Stool? Seriously? An ok breakfast with lousy service. I mean a really detached and under-serving attitude toward the customer. Guess they don't need the tips. But if some of the Lakers came in to eat, I guarantee that the waitresses would be all smiles, while offering tits and biscuits, and I didn't mean grits. I come from out of state (from Georgia) and I was really excited to try a breakfast place with this vibe as I miss southern fried chicken and breakfast. Came in and literally received the worst service and rude stares. It was just not very welcoming and literally nobody had basic manners to what appeared to be just us. We were seated in the very back end of the booths and shortly after being served fake orange juice, we looked at the menu to figure out what we were going to eat. We sat there for literally more than 30 minutes and no one came to check on us or take our order. We had at least 3 servers come to the area, check up on every table except us and act like we're invisible not even sparing us a look. Was so disappointed in the service and having waitresses straight up ignore us. I would have given 4 stars but then the manager or owner came out and asked how we enjoyed our meal which was a nice personal touch. I went with the catfish since so many other reviewers had recommended it. I did enjoy it with the hot sauce but I think some of the reviews hyped it up too much. I come here a lot and there are some problems but the overall experience is never disappointing. If you get there early in the morning you can pick your seat. There is always music playing outside that just warms your soulful r and b heart. The food is TO DIE FOR!!!!! Got off our plane and headed straight here for a hearty breakfast. For a weekday morning this place was packed! We waited about 10 minutes for our table which we didn't mind. Hostess was super friendly and made sure to update us on the status of our table without us having to ask. They have really cute counter seating here, but sat us in a booth. Our waiter was awesome! You could tell he knew a lot of the diners there and was serving with a genuine smile throughout our whole meal. Food: I ordered The Cookie which consisted of fried chicken drummettes and a waffle. Their waffles were BOMB! And I prefer the drummettes as opposed to a large fried chicken breast which I usually order when it comes to chicken and waffles. Sides of cornbread and collard greens were nothing special IMO. Pineapple mimosa was refreshing, but I still prefer the traditional OJ mimosa to this one. Price tag for three of us to eat here was under $50! I couldn't believe it like seriously we spent more than that buying snacks at the airport, what a steal! The last time I was here, I had a four-hour layover in LA and someone told me I had to go there. This time, I got off the plane hungry and it popped into my head and off we went. First things first, read and learn the rules! I thought they were quite hilarious myself and unfortunate that you have to tell people to pull up their pants and get off their damn cell phones. We were seated in about 5 minutes. The staff is on top of it. And I do mean on top of it. It is quite clear they support each other and make sure the customer is well taken care of. I ordered the french toast, potatoes and scrambled eggs, while my dining companion ordered the chicken wings, a waffle, scrambled eggs and grits. Everything single item was delicious - especially the wings, which were saying something. And who knew mixing cranberry, apple and orange juice makes a great combination! We liked the food so much we ate there again. This time, we had to wait a little while (it was a Friday early afternoon), but everything I said above remains the same. Ordered take out a few days ago, we were an hour late picking it up,We got there and the lady who gave me our food was so nice and when we left a man out front stopped me and said " don't forget your rose" and handed me and my friends three beautiful roses. All of those dinners come with multiple sides. Let's talk about the pork chop dinner... Pork chop was fried, we choose mac and cheese and greens for the sides with cornbread of course. The greens were very tender and the cornbread was exceptional! I forgot to mention that we ordered five drumlets to start, and they chicken is BOMB and were fried very well. The French toast was great and tasted like homemade french toast, we got pork sausage patties, scrambled eggs, and breakfast potatoes. Very hearty meal everything was hot and good. The last meal we got was the same croquettes which we got grits with cheese scrambled eggs and sourdough bread. The salmon croquettes were well-prepared, but I got tired of the taste after 1. Although they were good too! I am giving this place five stars because I have been here so many times and my experience has been consistent. I've gone to Serving Spoon for just three years. Loved it loved it loved it. So I convinced my family from out of town who was visiting to go out to breakfast here on a Wednesday morning at around 11a. We waited for over an hour and had to walk out. Now, I'm not giving them a bad review for waiting. I've waited longer at Serving Spoon. My problem was that the table we were waiting for had been done eating for a long time and decided to just sit there. We watched people at the table play on their phone, burp their baby and chit chat with other people who just came into the restaurant to talk to them. It was incredibly frustrating to see 10, 20, 30 ,45 min pass and they were all obviously done with their food, just chillin in the middle of lunch time... my family had a very long trip back home and to watch the minutes tick away was frustrating. With all of the rules they have posted everywhere and on the back of their menu where was management when it came time to enforce them and move folks along? I am definitely not bringing anyone important here no matter how good the food is and I will not bring a party of five or larger. Again, the food is great, the service is amazing, but this particular experience was a waste of time for my visitors who decided to leave the restaurant and now I feel embarrassed that I recommended Serving Spoon in the first place. This place has a real neighborhood feel in a city that sometimes feels like everything is a commuter drive-thru. The employees are invested and on top of their game. The rule list posted on the wall is both serious and tongue in cheek. The food here is taken seriously. The grits and fried items are delicious. I loved the speedy and nice service. We only waited 15 minutes. We "spooned" or shared a table with the nicest mom and daughter. Overall the whole experience was perfect. The Serving Spoon is one bae's family's favorite spots for breakfast when visiting the Los Angeles area. It's easy to get to from most areas in the city (directly on Centinela in between La Brea and La Cienega) and offers an excellent home-cooked-style menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This review is for our most recent visit to the restaurant this weekend. Initially, we planned on trying another place in Manhattan Beach for our breakfast before going back to the hotel, but as we neared the restaurant, noticed there was a marathon going on and the roads were blocked off close to the shore. My mind immediately went to the Serving Spoon as an alternative, so we turned around and began the short drive to Inglewood. As soon as we entered, we were warmly greeted by multiple employees and sat in a comfortable booth. Almost simultaneously, a man got our drink order and brought back our much-needed coffee. Our waitress came over a minute later to get our order which also was delivered quite quickly for a Saturday morning. I ordered a waffle with bacon and he also got a waffle but with 2 eggs and a ham steak, which were all excellent. We received our check towards the end of our meal and paid at the cashier with yet another friendly member of the staff. The food is great, no question, but the real appeal Here is the beyond excellent service and the warm environment they provide to their patrons. As stated above, immediately once we walked into the restaurant we were welcomed and acknowledged (which is becoming more of a rarity) and that continued until we left the building. I was disappointed the last time that I went because I asked the person who was on the counter if she could give me permission to post a flyer for an event that I was going to have in the community of Inglewood, it was give away to the families in need, well she said NO, I went again while I was waiting and said that it was posted that community events are welcome she said NO again. To me I understood that this place only welcome African Americans, she the person at the counter was very friendly with every African American that walk in but not to us. Being from the south, I love comfort food and this place does a great version of it even though they're in Los Angeles. Our table had chicken wing drummettes, mashed potatoes, collard greens, cornbread, candied yams, chicken & waffles, chili & pepper omelet and home fries. Everybody's food tasted delicious. The chicken wings were well - seasoned and the batter was crispy and stuck well to the chicken. The portions were generous without being obscene and the all the sides seemed homemade rather than prepackaged like at some places. Overall the food wouldn't win any awards for presentation but the taste was great and I don't buy food for presentation. One potential downside of The Serving Spoon is that it is crowded. We went on a Wednesday at 10am when you'd think a lot of people would be at work and it was jam packed. We waited about 20 minutes but the hostess made sure to keep us updated and she was very friendly and professional. The wait staff was fast and friendly and they were very attentive. Be prepared to search for parking since the lot is small, but otherwise go and have fun and eat a good plate of soul food. read more

Free (but limited) parking, hurray!! No line when we went on Tuesday around 9AM. The employees are all so warm and welcoming! Everyone greeted us with a huge smile from the entrance all the way to our seat. The bf got waffles, eggs over easy and bacon (5 pieces). (We can't remember what combo this was). Waffles had a hint of cinnamon, not the best but the BF said it's much better than the ones at Roscoes. Eggs and bacon are like the usual, but done well. I got the Fonda's combo - 3 pancakes, 2 eggs, and ham. I was expected a few pathetic slices of ham but it was a huuuuge piece of thick ham! Totally not what I was expecting (in a good way!), but I didn't really enjoy it because it was too salty for my liking. I had my eggs scrambled and they were done with butter, though not as watery as I usually like them. Pancakes are not suuuper fluffy, but still acceptable. We just had an amazing breakfast here. I ordered fried catfish with pancakes- best fried catfish I have ever had, and the pancakes were fluffy and delightful. My husband got the international omelet and was very happy- their potatoes were insanely good!! Service- top notch- everyone was so polite, and we were too. Some reviews have complained about the posted rules, and to that I say- the real shame is that a place like this has had enough bad experiences with customers that they have to post basic guidelines for how to be a polite customer- which in my mind is equally as important as polite staff. I actually appreciate that hey provide an experience without ass hats loudly talking on cell phones, children running rampant, and customers treaty if servers like crap. This was a really fun place to grab breakfast. I'm sorta sick of the basic breakfast and this joint had some happy alternatives. Although hubby had the traditional type of egg oriented meal, son had an unusual but tasty fried chicken sandwich! I was joyously presented with grilled catfish! Yum yum. It was cooked perfectly. So moist and fresh tasting. The men got some grits and loved em as usual. The service here is so super friendly and cheerful. We went on a slow Monday Morning and got a table right away. Why only 4 stars? 2 reasons: 1: daughters potatoes were very cold, so were the fries with the sandwich. So maybe they need a heat lamp. 2: the restroom was gross! The floor was so sticky from dried on urine in front of the toilet that my shoes stuck to the ground! I couldn't maneuver around without sticking somewhere. I had to actually wash the bottom of my shoes off so I could walk and not feel totally grossed out (that's probably a great reason to have separate bathrooms). So, maybe they should have someone clean this floors and toilet more often to avoid this unsanitary experience. We're probably going to go back, but I hope that they fix those two things first. read more
