The Serving Spoon is always a must-visit whenever I'm in Los Angeles. The vibe, energy, music, and food are consistently top tier. This visit, I ordered the salmon croquette with cheese, grits, eggs, and a waffle. Everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The customer service was outstanding, and the staff made the experience even better. It's one of those places that never disappoints and continues to be a staple every time I'm in LA.

We were able to be seated immediately at the counter, though there was a little bit of a wait if we wanted a booth, which was fine because we are counter people. Immediately, after sitting down, we were asked what we wanted to drink and hot coffee was brought right over. Not too long after that, the server took our order with a smile and we waited not long at all for it to have been as packed out as it was to receive our food. We ordered two Spooner Breakfasts, one with scrambled eggs with cheese, pork sausage, homestyle potatoes, and a biscuit and the other was two eggs over easy with bacon, cornbread, and grits. When I tell you every single thing was absolutely incredible I'm not lying. Those homestyle potatoes were easily the best I've ever had, and I'm a potato girlie. Unfortunately we don't live too close, but if we did this would easily be our breakfast spot.

I love to come here and eat before I get my day started in Los Angeles and this time I went before hitting up LAX. It was a bit frustrating that they wouldn't seat us before our guest arrived especially since we had somewhere to be by a certain time. We decided to just forget about our guest and get seated since we were starving in a small, four person seated area but once our fourth showed up it was so uncomfortable and tight! I have been trying to be good so I didn't want to get anything super sweet, deciding to go with just eggs, potatoes, turkey bacon and toast. I love that they give you four pieces of bacon and I especially love that they have non pork options! The bacon was cooked crispy just the way I like it but the potatoes were not good to me at all. I'm not sure if they douse them with ketchup or not but they had a red tint to them. I will continue to come here to get some great non-pork breakfast. The service is always super friendly and nice. I love a good family oriented and operated place!

Best, crispiest chicken wings I've had in my life. Everything I got was delicious. Everything. The cornbread was like the best cornbread I've had. It was grilled and came with honey butter-- can't stop thinking about that :)

I got "The Big Spoon" and the name is absolutely appropriate. I didn't finish it all. Standouts? Those chicken wings! The waffle was also very good. They're a think waffle, as a heads up! Atmosphere-3/5 It's a laid by diner. Old school R&B music was on, the tv was playing and it was nice vibe. Totally compliments the comfort food that you're eating. Service- 5/5 Service was fast, very courteous and personable. I had to spend a certain amount to use a coupon I had and the sever was very supportive and accommodating. Value- 5/5 Totally worth it. No comments on the value. I'll be back! Opportunities for Learning- 3/5 This is a typical "southern," soul food restaurant. Not much to learn, but much to enjoy! As a note. They are James Beard award winners, so that was really cool to lean.

Popped in today for fairly traditional breakfast. Went with an extra sausage link which I didn't touches I overestimated my hunger. Smh The grits, sausage link, and eggs were made to order- another great experience. I didn't get the name of the main server, as there were more than one who actually helped out. Today was more of a team like effort-which was fine. The last thing of note is the timing when you descend on this business. If you're going to come after the morning rush, you're absolutely going to be good to go whether you are solo as I was or in a larger party. Count on a wait time of about 5 to 10 minutes max. On the other hand, if you're doing a real morning breakfast in a true morning time slot, be prepared to wait a while, and make that reservation via Yelp as soon as you arrive. And during the morning rush, even coming by yourself won't necessarily mean you're going to be able to bypass any lines and go straight to the bar-as I found that out on a recent visit. All in all another great experience.

Pros: -Super friendly staff who are quick to serve you despite the long lines and wait times -The CORN BREAD. This was a favorite in our group because unlike many locations in So Cal, this one was NOT overtly sweet. Instead the corn bread was salty. The texture was perfectly crumbling in the inside yet firm with a crisp slightly burnt crust on the outside. Add some honey and butter and this was DELICIOUS. -The cinnamon butter. The waffles came with a delicious cinnamon butter that added a great flavor to the waffles. -The Chicken Wings. They were perfectly cooked making them piping hot when they arrived and were simple but delicious. Cons: -Dry Food. The fried chicken breast, red snapper, and waffles all tasted over cooked. The chicken breast was butterflied so it was very thin, not like a traditional bone in breast. I think this led to a drier chicken. Similarly, the red snapper tasted dry around the edges of the fish where it was thinner. Lastly, the waffles were a mix. The cinnamon butter added a great flavor yet the texture of the waffles were dry meaning I added more syrup and butter to soften them up. By comparison, the French toast were super soft and fluffy but lacked the cinnamon flavor. Final thought: -Overall, I would defiantly recommend this place for the great hospitality and great options. Not everything is a hit but if you stick to wings, corn bread, and French toast with cinnamon butter, you would be have a lights out dinning experience!!!

Been some time since dinning here and it has always been a valuable experience. Food fresh and cooked with care and attention. Service professional, personable, like you're at your cousins. The crowd is always on ten. Ordered the Spooner Breakfast. Had a taste for Turkey Sausage Patties Eggs (w/cheese and Green Onions) Grits Sourdough Toast and Coffee. My meal hit the table not too long after, cooked to perfection with all fresh ingredients. All I had to do at that point was tap a little Seasoning Salt and Pepper on the Grits (with a dab of Butter) and chow down. Had to hit the Buttered Sourdough Toast with some Grape Jelly and there was just no looking back after that. Everything paired well together. I literally had a fork with Turkey Sausage Scrambled Eggs and Grits on almost every bite. Nostalgic. Like my Mothers kitchen growing up. The Hosts Servers and Staff were all great adding to a great experience. They owe me nothing for today's meal and experience. Got everything I came for. Gratitude and give thanks to The Serving Spoon for a very pleasurable Breakfast experience that I look forward to repeating.

Pretty consistent neighborhood restaurant. The turkey chops were good but cooked a little too hard for me. Grits were nice and thick. Waffle tastes like it was made with wheat flour and was a bit rubbery. Eggs were prepared well. Coffee is a little mild but hot. Food was hot. Service was fast. We were charged for one meal x2 but thankfully caught it before paying.

I haven't been here in a couple of years. I decided to stop in this morning. The food is just outstanding- if you're looking for a good southern breakfast. This is the place to definitely visit for those of you that are visiting out of the country for FIFA . I'm telling you this is the place to come and have a wonderful delicious down home southern breakfast. I had scrambled eggs, egg whites with spinach and a little cheese the wings - fried wings. They were excellent not too greasy. The home fries potatoes were cooked to perfection. They were better than mine and I know mine are good. Pancakes were nice and hot. The Service was outstanding. I highly would recommend this place. For those of you who live in Los Angeles or in the neighbouring area please stop in. This is a wonderful place. I will tell you it's crowded. It is a little crowded but it's worth the wait! Bon appétit!

I love this place. If you want to feel like you woke up and came to family's house for breakfast for some good old southern cooking this is the place to be. Now the building is pretty small so the wait can take a little while. Our wait was about 45min but honey I parked myself right there because it's definitely worth it. Once we were seated we were offered a complementary glass of champagne, Only offered on sunday. Once our food was served, boy was I surprised. The portions are sooo big. Everything was cooked to perfection. One again I was pleased and I will definitely be coming back. read more

Love love love this place! Been here several times when I'm around Inglewood, and it's a MUST for home cooked breakfast! Friendly service, and consistently good food. I always have The Silas-has a waffle (fluffy and delicious!!), chicken, and eggs. Goooooood stuff. I rating the food 4 stars, the service would be a 3 or lower because no one served us for the first 15 mins or so, the waitress saw us but didn't come by until my boyfriend asked one of them if she could take our order. And after she left with our order the drinks didn't come until another waiter came to ask us what would we like to drink (even though we ordered it 10 minutes ago) The food was really yummy! My boyfriend had the chicken and waffles and he really liked it (though not as good as Roscoe's, he said). I got the the French Toast with eggs and sausages with a side of their spoon potatoes. The potatoes were amazing, so were the eggs and spicy beef sausage. THe french toasts were cold when I got to it, but It still tasted good and would've tasted a lot better if they were still hot. Overall it's a nice place to eat but I don't know if I would come here again because we didn't feel very welcomed here, only one of the waitresses were friendly to us, the waiters were nice and the lady and the front was nice too. read more

Came here during lunch with only one thing in mind: chicken and waffles. The line for sit-in was too long, so we got our orders to-go. As such, my waffles, lamentably, were soggy by the time I got to eat them about 30 minutes later (but that was on me, for waiting to get home to eat). However, the fried chicken drumettes kept surprisingly well, and were delicious -- crispy and well-seasoned skin, and moist on the inside. Tried some of my friends' orders (corn bread, mac'n'cheese, breakfast), and thought they were passable, yet laden with butter (like all comfort food is). OVERALL: Standout dish: fried chicken--probably some of the best fried chicken I've had in a while. Will definitely have to dine-in to try their chicken and waffles fresh, though. read more

I have been here around 4 times. I love breakfast so when I saw the reviews for this place, I had to come! I had delicious waffles and bacon! I believe the bacon was best when deep fried. The corn bread was also really good. The servers are friendly. It's usually really busy when I go, so they seem to be all over the place at times. Expect to wait awhile to be served when it's busy! There was one particular time when the servers were extremely attentive...I soon recognized some sort of food critic... -__- Even still, it was nice. We even got champagne!! Customer service is great! Friendly and quick! There's usually a wait for peak hours (Sat/Sun 10a-12p). My favorite is "The Cookie". You can't go wrong with chicken and waffles. Oh, and their grilled corned bread is REALLY good. Put some honey on it. I would definitely come back here again and maybe even make it my go-to brunch spot. Decent prices, good service, good food, easy/ample parking. :) read more

Once you get past the initial intimidation of the area, the entire experience is amazing. Food was spectacular, service was wonderful and it's generally a pleasure to attend. I have been here twice, and both times I got The Cookie (waffles and wings). I think the wings are fantastic, the waffles just so-so. Service is super friendly and attentive. The parking lot can be a bit tricky, but I found street parking in the surrounding community. Definitely a place to come early on a Sunday in order to beat the crowd. read more

This place is amazing. First time visit and you can just see the family atmosphere. You feel like family the second you walk in the door. Everyone is smiling. Then the food came and did not let down on that aspect either. We had an omelet with chili, home potatoes and English muffin and the salmon croquettes with a waffle. Everything was delicious. Friendly environment AND good food. You can't go wrong. read more

WOW! The reviews don't lie. This place is outstanding for breakfast. Be prepared to wait a little bit for a seat. But it is well worth it. DELICIOUS. And the wait staff is extremely courteous and responsive. Thanks, we will be back next time we are in LA. :-) read more

Omg this was the best food I've ever had!!! It took 40 min to get seated but it was a Sunday at brunch after church so that's expected. Lauren was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! Her service was fast and friendly. She was super cute and so personable. We had every waiter checking on us and clearing our table when we were finished with our plates. One of the waiters even came over and gave us the score of the game since we couldn't see the tv. They go out of their way to be of service to us. He took my waffle back to put cinnamon on it which was soooooooooo good!!!!! Definitely will be back. This place has been here since 82 and there's a reason. There are a ton of celebrities pictures with autographs on the wall thanking them because they are so good! read more

Everytime I visit LA, I come here for breakfast. Their food is soooo delicious and the value of it is great. I can get a meal for $20 and still wouldn't be able to eat everything because the portions are decent size. I love their food, and I highly recommend them to anyone who wants breakfast or even soul food. 10/10 read more

Great people, great energy and amazing staff. It is a little bit nerve wrecking from the outside but once you walk you see nothing but beautiful people and art work. The food was good as well. It is a little crowded and there is a small wait but it's 1000% worth it. We ordered an everything omelet no chili, potatoes, pancakes, pork sausage patties and scrambled eggs. I'm normally not a fan of sweets at breakfast but these pancakes were PHENOMENAL. I'm from Houston and I can't wait to go back. I'm already planning my next meal. Saw it's amazing review on Yelp, so I decided to give it a go. Love the staff! My boyfriend and I were greeted as soon as we walked in, as well as when other staffers would walk past. We felt so welcome! I ordered the French Toast (I saw in an earlier review that there were six or seven slices, I only got 4, but still SO GOOD!) French toast was sugary, buttery, and yummy. He had eggs over-easy, bacon, and potatoes with biscuit. Bacon was crispy all the way through, thick slices; everything tasted fresh. Whenever he comes up to visit me, we're going to make it a tradition to come here. read more

Ate at the serving spoon this morning, and it was quite good. I need to eat there a couple more times just to really get to the best combos of tastes. Today I had the Silas, waffle, fried chicken wings, eggs, and a side of grits. Good lord when I type it all out I am so greedy! So the waffle was just blah, everything else was great. Whoever seasoned the chicken was a little heavy handed, but other then that, yum, yum. The only other beef that my breakfast mates had was that while the chicken was pipping hot everything else was lukewarm. I explained to my breakfast company that they clearly didn't love food like I love food. As long as its not below room temp, I'll gladly eat it. Again, I'm greedy. Go it's delicious! Next time I'm having a biscuit, or pancakes. And as everyone else has noted the staff is really great. read more

The food here tastes like it just came out of your own kitchen. Good fare at a decent price. The staff treat you like an old friend. No more than 15 minutes passed from the time I walked in the door and when I had a piping hot plate of delicious food sitting on my table. The waitress checked on us frequently and was extremely friendly. -Not the annoying "leave me alone and let me eat" kind of friendly though. Just the right amount of friendliness :) The pork sausage here is addictive. The Serving Spoon does not disappoint. read more

Once we walked in the door we were immediately greeted and shown to our seats. The hostess called me beautiful, 5 stars for her service! We were told the waitress would be with us and was checked on twice in less than 5 minutes for drink preferences. Awesome so far! I use to live right by here but never came in for breakfast. It's larger than it looks from the outside and the staff is SUPER nice! I picked this place because my co-workers want chicken n waffles but we all didn't want to make the trek to Roscoe's. Waffle and chicken wings was definitely satisfying. I can't say it's better than Roscoe's but I can't say it's really worse either. I wish they did have more chicken options though since it seems as though they only have chicken wings and don't offer thighs or breast pieces. Try it for yourself and you make the call. read more

It was 1983, Harold E. Sparks, a handsome young man from Hamilton, Ohio leaves the security of a foreman position at Fisher Body, a division of General Motors, and moves to Inglewood, CA to fulfill his dream of opening a soul food restaurant. "The Serving Spoon" TM The idea of providing excellent food that is not only "Love At First Bite", but a place where customers feel like family, quickly caught on. "The Spoon," as often called by many, has served customers ranging from entertainers to politicians to the neighbor next door. All in the spirit of making you feel at home, with food that's good for the soul. Harold's two of three grandchildren now own and operate the family business, and are developing "Urban Eateries" in key markets throughout the United States.

The Serving Spoon has the best "soul food" in greater L.A. Soul food is supposed to be cheap and hearty - it's supposed to contain no-frills ingredients, cost less than $15 per entrée, be served in a divey restaurant in a not-so-nice neighbourhood and be cooked by an old lady that looks like Moms Mabley. The Serving Spoon delivers on all of those (although I didn't see the cooks so I couldn't determine if they were Mableyish enough). This place seems to be a pillar of the Inglewood/Ladera Heights/Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills black community. It's always packed, and on a Sunday you can expect to wait up to an hour. The last time I stopped in for lunch on a weekday I had the oxtails (served as a special every Wednesday). They were fall-off-the bone tender, not too fatty, and nicely seasoned. On previous visits I've had the fried catfish (delicious), fried chicken (a bit disappointing...not as good as Roscoe's or Johnnie's Pastrami) and chitlins (also delicious). I ordered the collard greens and red beans and rice as my 2 sides and they were well prepared, although I would have preferred if the collards were drained before serving to get rid of the bitter broth. On previous visits I've had their black-eyed peas (outstanding) and their yams (sickeningly sweet). The oxtails + 2 sides cost $14.95, which is a fair price. Other entrees typically cost between $8.95 and $15.95, which is reasonable considering the large portions and high quality. The staff are all super-friendly and treat you like a house guest, but when the place is especially busy they can get a bit frazzled and service can suffer. The overall cleanliness of the restaurant is OK, but I would like it to be a bit cleaner (i.e. no spilt food on the floor, counters and tabletops wiped better). The restaurant is located in a strip mall with a decent size parking lot, but since the joint is often so crowded the lot is usually full. Five stars... and that's before the kids even finished redecorating the table with juice. Taking two little ones anywhere that has a line is basically an Olympic event, but somehow The Serving Spoon makes it part of the experience. We ended up chatting with the people around us, my kid pointed out a guy wearing the brightest yellow glasses I've ever seen (apparently he's a famous podcaster... if you know, you know), and it reminded me why this is one of the places that makes "The Wood" feel like home. The staff deserves a medal. Before our food even came out, they brought the kids a biscuit to keep the tiny hunger riots under control. They also gave us plastic placemats, which I originally thought was for the kids. After watching the juice spill, syrup spread, and crumbs multiply like they were on a mission... I realized those placemats were really to protect the restaurant from my children. The food was worth the wait, the service was patient, kind, and genuinely welcoming, and nobody made us feel bad for dining with two tiny tornadoes. Great food. Great people. May have been a little out of our minds to try score a seat at The Serving Spoon on Super Bowl weekend Saturday morning, days after Eater posts a feature article, noting it as one of the "must eats" when visiting LA. Expecting a decent wait, by the already building crowd, I put our name down for counter or table, whichever was available first, and after about 30 minutes or so, a couple of counter spots opened up. There was a great energy in the lot where locals and visitors waited, repping their respective jerseys, as well as inside the diner itself. Now the food - So many options and combinations, and peering at the dishes the other diners are enjoying, it's quite difficult to choose. I got the Jerry (3) pancakes w/chicken wing splits with eggs sunny side up. Super fluffy pancakes, plump flavorful (all about that skin) wings and the perfect runny on those eggs. Plentiful enough to take half home for a round 2. My friend got the chicken and waffles, which also looked delicious. The food came up pretty quickly considering how packed they were, service and check-up were great, and one of the best breakfast experiences in the city. Do you love comfort food? Do you love breakfast? Do you love delicious fried goodness?! This is the place for you. I got the yelp $10 for $20 deal and decided to finally use the deal yesterday! We ordered 1) the catfish (breakfast) + grits + eggs + cornbread (our choice) and 2) chicken & waffles. The catfish was fried DELICIOUSLY - perfect crispy batter on the outside with juicy and tender meat inside. It was my first time having grits so I have nothing to compare it to... but it was very smooth and buttery. I like that they add cinnamon to the chicken & waffles - yummm. My favorite thing about this spot is the service. Everyone was SO friendly and SO inviting. As we left, the owners (the older couple I think?) asked us how everything was and asked us what we ordered and hoped they would see us back again. Everybody was GENUINELY nice and gave you genuine smiles, it felt like everybody was happy to be there. And I love their cute little signs around the restaurant with happy and inspiring quotes. Such a great environment. Complimentary champagne sundays... is the icing on top of the cake! How awesome is that? I'll definitely be back to spoon some more :) Ps. Service and Chicken: 5/5. Food Options, Wait Time, and the Environment 4/5. We arrived about 10:30 a.m. for a Saturday brunch and had to wait an hour and five minutes to be seated. Many individuals here tend to stay at the tables long after they've finished their meal and paid, which has increased the wait time. Our server was extremely courteous and attentive. The menu is small and lacks a variety of selections. They are more simple and classic foods, such as pancakes and eggs. They have a parking space immediately in front, but it was full when we came, so we parked in the Baptist Church parking lot, which is permitted according to the signs. As previously stated, the Fried Chicken Breast was really wonderful. I seldom order chicken for breakfast, but after seeing so many positive reviews and so many other customers eating it, I decided to give it a try. The pancakes weren't my favorite; they tasted exactly like Denny's. Also, I wanted over-easy eggs, but they were incredibly runny, therefore I gave the kitchen a 4/5 for total experience. They also do not offer many alternatives on the menu that I typically order, so I had to deduct a point for all of those reasons. read more

My omelet was also well-made, not over or undercooked, nicely seasoned, with fresh veggies. My friend ordered the fried chicken with waffles. The chicken breast was moist and had a nice crispy coating but could have used a little more flavor. The waffle was okay. I like mine a little crispier. You just got served. And in a good way. By the Serving Spoon. Huge props to Trayvonne for the 411 about this restaurant. He's right. Yelp's right. In the words of my Aunt, "It ain't healthy and it don' matter." Cookies Combo with chicken wings and waffle is like fried crack with cinnamon crack. I was addicted from the first bite. He got a Sparks Combo with fried catfish and the same sweet waffle. I added a side of grits dripping butter more than Trayvonne sweats. For the price, it is hard to imagine any better comfort food. I stopped here last month with a friend of mine who recently relocated to the Los Angeles area. We were looking for a breakfast spot near his house before the USC game. I checked Yelp and found this gem. This place is great. My buddy and I had to wait about 5 minutes for a table (it was jammed packed with people.) The staff was friendly and they knew exactly what they were doing. Our server suggested we try the catfish and grits. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny. The food was excellent. BEWARE OF THESE THIEVES. I used my credit card after eating this mediocre food, and someone shortly after tried to steal and charge over $1,000 dollars at NIKE on MY CREDIT CARD. I try to support black-owned businesses, but scam businesses like this are never to be trusted. BRING CASH if you plan to eat here or you may be unknowingly paying for SOME GHETTO THIEF to sport new NIKES and CLOTHING. Such a shame to steal from your own community and your own hard-working people.
