I have had breakfast at this establishment several times, over the years. The service and food are rather good and consistent. The staff, for the most part, is friendly. I gave it only 3 stars, for the following reasons: Coffee refills were not forthcoming. I waited more than 10 minutes, with my cup on the edge of the table, and no one offered a refill. This was not the case, in the past. I finally asked for the one refill. That's all I got, one refill. They also charged me for the small glass of milk, which I requested for my coffee. I do not use Coffeemate. I also felt like they just could not wait for me to leave, especially the hostess. It appeared she wanted to get the regulars seated. One final note, the hostess indicated that I should pay at the register. She would not take my money. Meanwhile, she collected other people's money and/or credit cards, from their tables and brought the money to the register for the customers. I call this favoritism. This is a great spot for breakfast. I eat hear when I'm off during the week. I'm sure it's crowded on the weekends. I usually get the Rambo; beacon, eggs, a waffle, and I opt for grits instead of potatoes. The eggs are fresh, the beacon is very good (it's hard to find good beacon), and the waffle is very good as well. I've been hear about 5 or 6 times and the food has been consistent. The service is ok for a very popular place. I usually find busy, popular places lag on service because of volume and other reasons, but The Serving Spoon is good, not out standing but good. I gear service on if I need to ask for refills on my drink or if they offer. I have to ask here. I've talked to other people and they have told me it is a great late night joint as well. Even though I have never tried lunch or dinner all the offerings sound good and they have daily specials. All and all I would strongly recommend this place for weekday breakfast! read more

What a delightful place! We had just arrived at LAX airport and needed to find some good eats nearby. The people here are very welcoming. It is, or certainly feels like, a family -owned restaurant. Great breakfast and lunch (they close at 3 pm except 5 pm on Sunday). We had waffles, eggs and turkey sausage, and the vegetable plate - all delicious. We would go again in a heartbeat. Just came back from my first ever trip to Los Angeles and went here upon the recommendation of a very nice and helpful Hertz representative at LAX. It was after midnight, we were tired and hungry and thank God this place was still open! I was a little apprehensive at first only because I think we were probably the only white people at this place but, I have to say that it was definitely more than worth it. I had the t-bone steak with collard greens and cole slaw while my friend had the fried catfish and waffles with grits. In fact I loved my friend's catfish so much I ordered another one to go, that's how good this stuff was! It was probably the most succulent, tender and perfectly seasoned piece of fish I've ever had and I don't even like fish to be completely honest!!! This is hands down my favorite breakfast spot in a LA. It's a family owned breakfast/lunch spot and I've been eating here for over 10 years. I'm from the south so I'm very picky about my food. The serving spoon is one of the few places that reminds me of home cooked southern food. The staff is friendly and the owners often stop by your table to say hi and catch up on your life, like old friends. I bring everyone I know and every person who comes to visit LA here and no one has ever been disappointed. In fact they often go back without me :). My favorite are the French toast, veggie omelet, waffle and griddle biscuit but everything on the menu is amazing. Just don't come if your in a hurry. I'm being lenient with the 2nd star. My friend and I had a taste for a really delicious breakfast, so I mentioned the serving spoon. I'm so sorry I did that. First off we get in and order then after everyone around us was served (including 2 men who walked in some time after us & ordered what looked to be a 30 piece fried chicken) the waitress comes over and casually says she forgot to put in our order. It had been at least 20 minutes. After we finally are served we were very excited to finally eat. I ordered the Salmon Croquette meal with a waffle. And my friend just ordered a breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. The waffle was cold and spongy with little flavor. You can get a better salmon croquette at Panns, it wasn't that great here. My friend said his food was a lot less to be desired as well but I'm sure he'll be here to give his own account.. After I paid 36. something for some crap food I decided to stick with Fabulous Burger which is a short walk away and really serves "the Best Breakfast in town". Today we decided to try the serving spoon since we havent been in over a year, the experience was horrible. We ordered the catfish and the Hugo special, the pankcakes were yellow but they were ok... The fish,grits and everthing eles was horrible... When checking out the manager asked how the food and service was. I explained to her it was different , when she asked me what was wrong , I told her the grits werent so good and the food was cold she immediately take offense to it.. I asked what brand they use for grits she said " the same kind I have at home in the red box" , I thought this was very rude. So why ask about the service if you can not handle constructive criticism. really hate to do this but, this is the second time since the new owners have taken over that i have been totally disappointed, the food was great before, now the food is still good if you can stomach the service, they use to have people friendly host now their a Joke, no urgency no pride, like they dont give a " " , Situation, we work nights there open til 5AM on saturday night, our heaven for a minute, months ago, they closed it down for the earlybirds, now back open, call in, wouldn't take call in go down there, order at 4:15AM, waiting , waiting ,waiting, now its 5AM and im on Lunch they say now how did you want your sandwich, WTF , the other orders sitting on counter, only to get cold while i wait another 10 minutes, HUH.............. Went for breakfast Sunday morn. The wait to be seated was 30 minutes; 1st time there, must be good. Waitress was attentive, cordial. I ordered Veggie omelet, no cheese please, with avocado. Sorry, we don't serve avocado. Food came rather quickly. Omelet was small. Grits were a little runny, Cornbread good, pancakes were excellent. Saw the owner when leaving, and shared my opinions. He was anything but receptive; had a comeback for each complaint and a look like 'of course' for each compliment. They also have one of those motorless roller deals that is suppose to quietly pick up small paper and crumbs; this thing was as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Man, you're making money.
