My first experience of The Shack was in Hawaii and I was pleasantly surprised to find this location when I moved to LA. This place is pretty much a part of the local community with their annual chili cook off and annual Westside rib cook off. They've had fundraisers here for some of the regulars and has been a communal space for every walk of life on the west side. This place is your classic neighborhood bar. They have a decent selection of alcohol and a surprisingly extensive food menu. Their small parking lot is located on the right side of the bar with an open patio area on the opposite end. Joey is fantastic, April is great, and Liz who bartends there and runs karaoke on Wednesday nights is the best. I will keep coming here as long as I live in the area. read more

Let's start with how good my Burger was: amazing. I got the pineapple Burger every time I came and I was not disappointed at any time. I also got a side of fries and they were some of the best I could ask for. Everything was good perfectly and tasted great, no complaints whatsoever. The atmosphere when we came was calm, but thats during lunch and when they open so not too many people. But when some regulars show up, its gets loud with laughs and plenty of friendly customers that get to chat it up with the staff. All in all, I enjoyed my visits. Came here 3/4 days I was working in the area and all 3 times were exactly the same. Sadly this is not my home and I probably won't be back anytime soon, but for those in the area, you're lucky because I recommend this place . read more

Bar service is great, and the staff is unbelievably friendly. Recently learned of this spot due to the passing of a friend and coworker of 12 years. The Shack hosted a gathering of his friends and family for us to come together and celebrate his life. The staff was there with us, making sure we had what we wanted or needed and kept the drinks flowing. It's a very nice classic surf bar with a nice outdoor patio with patio heating in the cooler months. A great place to stop for some drinks and food (they have a very nice menu, but unfortunately, I wasn't too sure what I'd be able to order due to my NCGS. read more

I stopped in here one day to grab a beer with my then girlfriend who is a professor at nearby Loyola Marymount after we had enjoyed some food right down the street from this place and was heading to the beach to enjoy a little sun. It smells and feels like a dive bar/good bar food type of place and even though we only had a couple beers before heading out I'll be sure to revisit this place again in the future. It was just what we were looking for. A "dive bar," with a great atmosphere. We saw parents and kids enjoying their Saturday evening dinner. A group of friends catching up over beers. A group of regulars around the bar. Order your food in the kitchen and your drinks at the bar. I ordered the bacon-blue-cheese-burger with fries. My boyfriend ordered the turkey BLT. Funnily enough the "hero" of the evening was the "funnel fries" that came in a basket.... nearly funneled fries with powdered sugar on top and a tub of icing. I do not have sweet tooth, but I couldn't help myself. Good pub food, reasonably priced, friendly, a great smile from the barkeeper. What's not to like? We will definitely be back! read more

My boyfriend has lived walking distance from here for 7 years so he wanted to do a local bar hop for his birthday at all our favorites in the neighborhood. Every bar was so lovely except this one. We started at the Grain, then came here as stop 2. The bartender saw us walk in and as we tried to order drinks, she was extremely rude right off the bat and said she didn't "give a shit about anyone's birthday" and to "go fucking drink somewhere else". We obliged, but wow, it was so uncalled for and really soured the night for about 20 mins. We were just shocked that after coming here so many times over the years, she was just such a jerk for no reason literally the second we walked in. Needless to say we won't ever be back. We went straight to Harbor Room which was a blast. Pete is a solid bartender, tied with Rocky at Prince o Wales. We love the neighborhood community vibes we feel hanging out there, so I'm really happy we could salvage the night after such a shocking experience at the Shack. Do yourself a favor and just go next door! Wish the owners would do something about this woman, it would be great to have this bar back on the list of cool local spots. read more

Went on a Wednesday afternoon. Website said there are specials everyday. Fiesta Wednesday offered 2 Taco & chips for $ 6, and pitchers of Pabst for $9. Got there and asked about the Fiesta Wed. special and was told they don't do that anymore. So why is it still on the website? The woman who does that hasn't updated it. Asked about the PBR pitcher for $9. "We don't have PBR anymore, and Bud light is $11 for a pitcher. All other beers are $17 a pitcher." Dishonest advertising. Burger was average. Fries were good...very similar to McDonald's. No big deal. Not likely to return. Don't believe any Specials on the website. They don't have them anymore. Nice patio! read more

My b'ness associate previously picker the Tripel - what a TS2 (Two Star 2uesday disaster). However, this time he picked a winner located at Culver, at the foot of Vista del Mar in Playa del Rey. The Shack is a dive bar specializing in burgers. We both ordered the signature Shack Burger ($7.99 | burger topped w/ Louisiana sausage, produce, and cheese if you like). It was a Mon so we also received complimentary fries: Score! The burger was genius! The texture of the sausage contrasted nicely w/ that of the burger. Both were savory & moist, and filled you up nicely. In addition, the fries were hot and crispy: 5 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, it was tiki bar like, and literally is a run down shack. There are inside seats, as well as high tables outside: 5 Stars. Likewise, the service from the bartender was excellent. He was very friendly, attentive, and the food came out quickly: 5 Stars. I wish The Shack was close to my office (maybe not because I'd be here all the time drinking beer - LOL). The food is reasonably priced, the ambiance is chill, and the service is excellent. I do like if not LOVE the "SHACK BURGER" with the Beef Patty coupled with a Butterfly Grilled HOT LINK. I don't have the tomato or pickles otherwise it becomes a monster burger with too much stuff that ends up making it hard to eat and hold without using a knife and fork. I prefer mine without cheese as well as prepared MEDIUM RARE. The only things I'd say could improve it is... which one of 'em I did do, was add BACON... 'tho it's no mandatory nor necessary since the cholesterol and swine is already represented by the hot link... the other thing would be to have a thicker beef patty, so it can be properly hold a true MEDIUM RARE preparation, so that it's thicker, and more juicy, pink and fleshy. I once saw some oddball kinda weird looking guy in line griping with a little bit of disappointing anger about the lack of The Shack not having a fried egg available as an add on to buy... so a legitimate comment (maybe not so much a warranted complaint) in the "build a burger" spirit... I guess they could also offer those other unique gourmet toppings. I know Fatburger, Red Robin and The Counter amongst others offer that fried egg, it's definitely a high profit margin add on, and people do like it. For that reason, I'd say if they offer a hot link, mushrooms, bacon and other delights, why not EGGspand the menu and for an EGGstra charge, offer the EGG... I'd also say, what would make this place perfect and I could have sworn they used to have it years ago, is offer FRESH CUT FRIES as opposed the thing frozen variety. I think in part, fresh cut fries is what makes a burger joint whole. All-in, without a soda you're looking at about $10 for a burger and fries for your meal price. The parking in the area isn't super easy, but with enough karma and perseverance its attainable. The seating is okay during off peak (duh? I guess, right?) hours or times, since this replicates a sports bar of sort, so if you go during college and pro football seasons on the weekend, or summer (since it's walkable to the Playa Del Rey Beach... literally 3 mins or 3 blocks to the sand and ocean), you might find it crowded. Los Angeles is a burger town. I grew up here and have had more than my fair share of burgers. In-n-Out is now a familiar name to much of the country; fewer people outside of LA may have heard about Tommy's, The Habit, Fatburger, and others. But almost nobody knows about The Shack - which is why, out of all the burgers you could have when you step off the plane at LAX, this should be your first stop. Yes, it is worth driving farther than that In-n-Out right next to the airport. It is THE hidden gem of LA burgers. The first thing that you will notice about The Shack is that it's a tiny joint. It's been that way since I came here in the 80s as a kid. It hasn't changed, and it shouldn't change. Parking is limited, but it's usually easy to find street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Just be mindful to not park in front of people's driveways and everyone's happy. When you walk in, you'll be struck by how simple yet cozy it feels. Sports are always on TV. Low ceilings, exposed beams, some tin siding, and old wooden furniture adorn the interior. Old-timers with sun kissed skin make up the majority of the clientele. This is a quintessential dive bar where Playa del Rey locals go to hang out. The only thing missing from how I remembered it was the sawdust-covered floors - which probably disappeared decades ago. I ordered a Shack Burger with cheese and a side of fries. It's a simple, unassuming 1/4 lb patty, grilled with melted cheese. But the best addition is the Louisiana sausage link, sliced in half lengthwise and put right on top. With your first bite, you may be surprised how well it all works. The sausage does not overpower or compete with the burger flavor, but rather complements it with a slight bit of Louisiana heat. The char from the grilled meat balanced nicely with the fresh lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. If you want more heat or more complexity, each table comes with hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce, respectively. Until flying back into LA today, I hadn't eaten a Shack Burger in more than 15 years. Having one today was like reuniting with a long lost childhood friend. I took comfort in knowing that no matter where I've traveled, if I make my way back to LA I can always count on this little, windswept dive bar within walking distance of the Pacific for one of the best damn burgers in town. My series of healthy alternative eats continues as the saga continues this week at a local favorite spot in Playa Del Rey - The Shack. Let me be honest, I love The Shack Burger. It's one of the better burgers around - although I am quite partial to burgers topped with outrageous things - sausages, pulled pork, eggs, etc. So, each time I go here it's tough not to order The Shack Burger. In order to avoid the discomfort of feeling fat in a tuxedo in a few weeks, I ordered a tuna melt. I am not saying that the tuna melt is the most healthy thing in the world but it is, relative to rest of the menu - you gotta work with with you got. You get a good amount of tuna in your melt, so its a good portion. The tuna melt in combination with a cup of water, although very boring, is a good healthy alternative at the Shack. PS - I'd honestly just suggest going to Shack and enjoying their burgers. Diets can always start the next day or the day after. read more

The old cliche that bacon makes everything better might just be getting trumped by the underrated sausage link. Yes, the sausage link. And this sir, is the Shack Burger. I'm even contemplating suggesting to the Dodgers that they top the Dodger Dog with a hot link. Maybe then I wouldn't feel ripped of with paying $8 for a hotdog. The Shack has great beer specials for the local teams, $5-6 pitchers for Dodgers, Lakers. You get a lot of local Playa folks in there and general beach people as well. I'm not a big karaoke fan so I only come in for the sports. I liked the smoking patio, when I used to smoke. They only have 1 TV there though. They take cards, which is good. But, don't make the mistake of accusing them of not giving you back your CC when you close your tab. They give it right back to you when you open it. My friend wanted to go and get a good burger so we decided to try the shack. The atmosphere is great and upbeat and the people are very nice but the hamburger was overcooked and the bun did not seem like the freshest. The beer was nice and cold and there was a great crowd at the bar. I got the combo burger with the sausage on top of the hamburger patty. The sausage was tasty and it was fine but it's a very thin burger and when they overcook it it really didn't have much moisture. The next time I'll make sure to ask to make sure that it's not cooked any more than medium I did not ask this time and I learned my lesson. read more

Walked in around 9:30 on a Saturday night with a group of about 20 for a birthday party and we were severely mistreated. The older lady bartender was immediately rude to our entire party and started cussing at us. She told us we should f*** off and go drink elsewhere before we even got a chance to try and order a drink. Coexisting fans from Houston and L.A. during game 6 of world series, priceless, mostly because as we all know, Doyers won that game in style... it was exciting.
