We were heading home from Denver and decided to stop at The Shaggy Sheep for breakfast. Our meal was yummy. I had the baked avocado, layered with 2 eggs and fried potatoes and my husband had the Classic with smoked brisket. He raved about the brisket and the potatoes. The service was friendly and fast. The restaurant is welcoming and feels homey. Plus they have a little gift shop. We'll stop again. read more

We have passed this spot many times on the way back from hiking and skiing but have never gotten the opportunity to stop. We planned a hike near Grant today so we could stop at the Shaggy Sheep on the way back. The staff were super friendly and had great suggestions. We liked the food and would definitely love to try other dishes as well. It a small spot inside but came in at open at 11am and we were easily sat. Four days in Bailey, four days of eating at The Shaggy Sheep. Is that a record? Considering how good the food is, maybe not. Our top fave was the burger: amazingly flavorful with each ingredient fresh, carefully chosen, perfect. It looks so much more simple than it is. Next to it, the hand-cut fries are spectacular and the dill-laden potato salad is bright and refined. Chilaquiles (with excellent salsa verde), fluffy French toast and a French dip with smoke-ringed brisket rounded out our dining tour, and there's still more we'd like to try. The service from both the waitstaff and co-owner Sarah was bar none and so much fun. Great people who take a lot of pride in this wonderful thing they've built. And they don't miss a beat with the funky sheep decor! We're fans for life. read more

The Shacky Sheep is a fun, delicious gem. It's off of Kenosha Pass. If you blink you will miss it. The breakfast is amazing with large portions and homemade jams and hand cut breakfast potatoes. Great service! Don't leave without a homemade fried pie! They have a fun outdoor area with picnic tables and a food track with more snack like things. Could be a nice break spot on a road trip. read more

This place more than lives up to the hype! I'm staying about a mile down the road, so stopped in yesterday and went with the burger, which is one of the best I've ever had (and I'm a burger lover). Went back today, and while I wanted another burger I needed the salad. The calabacitas didn't disappoint! Everything was fresh and delicious. They've got a bar area to the right, cocktail menu, and several good beers on tap. To the left is the gift shop (local jams, t-shirts, mugs), and further down is the main dining area. They've even got some "bar" seating right by the windows overlooking 285. Staff couldn't be more friendly! You'll feel at home right when you walk in. Pull over! You won't regret it. read more

Arrived at 2:30pm to be told there would be a 30 minute wait and that we would only be offered "small bites" after 3pm once we were finally sat. We were the only ones waiting... there were zero efforts made to accommodate. As a local, I won't be returning. read more

Stopped at this place randomly driving from Denver to Buena Vista and glad we did. Super comfy little cafe and bar with great decor and awesome little gifts. We were immediately welcomed with the most friendly staff, they are simply wonderful! Good selection of draft beers, wine on tap, and terrific house made cocktails. I had the short rib sandwich that came with grilled onions and a jalapeño cream sauce on a brioche bun. It was tender and delicious. But the star of my meal was the hand cut French fries, so very delicious. Perfectly salted, crisp-tender, and golden brown. You'll love this little gem in the mountains! read more

We asked our son-in-law for advice on where to eat along the highway 285. He suggested the shaggy sheep. We didn't have high expectations, but we were pleasantly surprised at this excellent spot. It is located in Grant, Colorado. Don't blink or you will miss it. When you walk through the front door, you will see a selection of delicious empanada fruit pies that are fresh baked. We had lunch here and found the Carnitas tacos, the brisket sandwich, and the burger all terrific. The potato salad was some of the best we've ever had. A potato soup with chorizo was also wonderful. It seems all the food is baked in-house from scratch. Service was attentive, even though the place was packed. Word seems to be out, the shaggy sheep is the place for home cooked gourmet dining along 285. We agree! read more

I stopped by for a burger while out on a drive, and it was super tasty. And that was despite making an unfortunate choice to get green chile on it, thinking it was just chunks of chile, but in fact, it was stew. I should have figured this out when they asked me if I wanted it on the side, so it was my fault. Despite this, it was a slightly damp but still delicious burger. Ok, you know when you're on a road trip and you pass all these kitschy, roadside cafes and restaurants and wonder whether or not you should stop and give it a shot because more often than not you will be greatly disappointed? Well this is DEFINITELY NOT one of those times!! We were in Littleton, Colorado visiting friends who also have a home in Crested Butte, and they have driven by The Shaggy Sheep for the past 9 years and never stopped in once. Fortunately, today was the day they ended that record! I can't begin to tell you how awesome it was! From the moment you walk in you can feel the love in the room and you get an immediate feeling of being "home". In fact, the first person to greet us is affectionately called "mom" by everyone. Now mom is pretty sassy, and really quick witted, and she also truly makes you feel like one of her own. I was so worried that I wasn't going to like the food because I wanted so badly to review them, and lucky for me, and you if you're ever in the area, it didn't disappoint! There were four of us and we all fell in love with The Shaggy Sheep. I had the Tequila lime chicken which was really moist and tasty, two of us had their Smoked brisket which they both said was delicious, and one of us had their Carnitos tacos, which also didn't disappoint! I also tried their green chili soup, which if you love a little heat, which I do, you should definitely try it! As we were waiting for our food I took a little stroll around the storefront where they were selling various sweatshirts and t-shirts with their logo, and REALLY beautiful handed-knitted hats made by none other than mom herself! I was so bummed that I live in South Florida because I honestly wanted to buy one! But what I DID buy, and I highly recommend you do as well, was some of their homemade preserves! I bought the blueberry, mixed berry, strawberry, and my absolute favorite, their mango jalapeño! In fact, we made a pork tenderloin that night and served that on top of it, and OMG was it amazing! So don't pass up this one in particular. It would even be great on a piece of cheese! And speaking of "don't pass up", DEFINITELY leave room for one of their fruit filled pies or one of their scones, all of which were great! The pies are individual sized which at first I thought were empanadas, because that's what they looked like. We were pressed for time so I bought four pies and two scones to go, and I'm really glad I did! They were all REALLY delicious and they didn't skimp on the filling, but my favorite was the pumpkin. I just happen to love pumpkin, not inferring the others weren't equally as delicious. I also happen to love scones but I do find more often than not they are much drier than they should be. There were not. They had the perfect amount of moisture and their flavor, I chose peach, was so delicate and delicious! Hopefully I haven't ranted on too long, but if you're ever in the area and want really good, really hearty, homemade cooking and baked goods, served by a staff that is so warm and welcoming that you feel like family, DO NOT DO LIKE MY FRIENDS DID FOR NINE YEARS, be sure YOU stop at The Shaggy Sheep. And if you do, please give "mom" a hug from me!!! OMG, I ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION THE FRENCH FRIES!!! I don't know what they do to their fries, well actually I do but I swore I wouldn't tell anyone, but their French fries are freaking AMAZING!! DEFINITELY order some for your side. But if you do you may as well order a side for the table otherwise you'll be lucky if you get to eat any of your own once one of your table mates tastes yours! What a gem! This fun, cozy diner is in an area with not a lot of food options. That said, they certainly don't rest on their laurels because of it. We came for an early lunch driving through. I had the Quinoa Salad with chicken. It was fresh, delicious and filled me up. My husband had the brisket tacos (they were on special), and he loved them as well. Likely similar to how many people stumble on The Shaggy Sheep, we were heading back from skiing and I-70 was backed up. We pulled up yelp and discovered the Shaggy Sheep. The parking lot is pretty big and at grade, so you can go to one end if you need some speed to merge back onto 285. We had called to make a reservation (highly recommended due to COVID) and the staff was very thankful that we did. When we walked in, there were a bunch of hats and scarves for sale on the left that were super soft and presumably knit from Shaggy Sheep wool! Our waitress was Morgan (who has a super cool tattoo sleeve) and she was spectacular. She brought us water and took our drink orders and since we were ready to order our meals, she also took those! Our food came out quickly. I had ordered the short rib with beets and my wife got a burger with fries. I was very excited to try the short rib, and I was not disappointed. I merely needed a fork to cut through the rib. There was a nice crust on it and the flavor was good. The beets were just slightly undercooked or under-pickled. They were firmer than I was comfortable putting my fork into, but the flavor was great. I like when the taste and texture is closer to the original of my food. My wife's burger was also great. I thought it was cooked well and the toasted bun provided a nice little crunch on the inside. That was a nice surprise. This will definitely be a "recommend to friends" and "need to go back" for me whenever we're driving through that area of 285. read more

We have driven past this place at least 20 times in the past two years and every time talked about stopping there... today we finally did! We were not disappointed. This is on the inside just as you would imagine from the outside - a cozy, cottagey feeling place with a bar and a dining room with a little fireplace (gas I think, but still nice) and a little shop with branded and sheep-themed items. Their menu is not lengthy, but there's something for everyone. Our child has an egg allergy so sometimes it's tough for her to eat out, but luckily everything on the kids menu was egg free. I had the burger, with the shaggy sauce, and my husband had the chicken wrap and a cup of the green chili. The chili was spicy, which he was fine with, and the burger was perfect. Hand cut fries were good and salty. I think our waiter was probably pretty new, but did a great job and everyone there was super friendly. Picked up a mug on our way out. So imagine the absolute Triple Word Score in finding the Shaggy Sheep! It's delicious, it's uncompromisingly down-home friendly, and best of all, it's right here in my backyard. Sarah and the entire crew are nearly as delicious at the Chipotle and Lime Chicken sandwich. The potato soup is proof positive that the Universe loves me and wants me to be happy. Breakfast usually consists of three parts Joy and two parts Butter, along with whatever Chris and his team pads that out with (try the jalapeño biscuits!) In the summer, the Airstream trailer out back is a welcome addition. The food here is delicious! I tried the green chili and tacos, and my husband ordered the ruben sandwich - the special of the day. The tacos had a different seasoning, i enjoyed quite a bit, and then i took a bite off the ruben sandwich and made me want my own (but i stuck with my tacos). All in all, it was all very yummy! Upon entering, we were greeted warmly, seated immediately, and were asked what we would like to drink. When our server came back with our drinks, she took our orders. My friends ordered sandwiches and salads and I ordered the carnitas tacos with upgraded carnitas french fries smothered in green chile. Our food came out quickly and tasted so delicious. About midway through my lunch, I decided to get an arnold palmer because their lemonade looked so good. When we asked for separate checks, our server didn't bat an eye, which is great because some places frown upon separate checks.
