Well , Shanty was not far off from delivering on the eclectic menu options , but one thing that could be the downfall is that back step to the upper part of the restaurant, huge liability, their is no warning , sign and / or signals of that step as a "HAZARD", hate to see all the owners hard word go to waste because someone broke their neck on "THAT STEP". Would imagine many people came to their demise on "THAT STEP" as I did, not to mention the poor staff that has to deal with "THAT STEP"! read more

Dined here for brunch today. We were a party of 9, looking for a quick bite to eat before our flights back home. The restaurant was very busy, and they were taking reservations. Luckily, there were exactly 9 seats at the bar and we were given the opportunity without a reservation to be seated immediately. Success! We ordered the eggs Benedict, fish and chips, omelettes, lobster roll, hamburger, chicken sandwich, egg sandwich. Every single meal was delicious. The crispy potatoes were also very yummy. Absolutely no complaints! The service was fast and efficient. They didn't even bat an eye that we were such a large group ordering only food at the bar. It was a great experience with friendly staff. Last weekend, I made a trip back to The Shanty and have to say I was so disappointed. I want to give them another try, but I really don't want to have a repeat of my last experience. I ventured in on a Friday night, just a party of one. I was offered a seat at the bar, which was fine by me. I ordered a cocktail that sounded tasty, and based upon my past experience, I expected it to be delicious. This was the first disappointment. It was so strong I couldn't drink it. I never want to be that jerk that asks them to remake it so I drank what I could and left the rest untouched. The next problem that was very apparent was the fact it was DEAFENINGLY loud. I had to repeat my order a number of times so the server could hear me. I was very, very grateful that I came alone. Had I brought a friend, we would have went hoarse trying to have a conversation within 1 foot of one another. People were literally screaming over one another. I don't know if this is due to the buildings construction, but it sounded more like a packed, rowdy bar than a place to grab some food. I ordered a side (brussel sprouts) and a small plate of salmon since I was looking forward to their desserts. To my surprise, my small plate was not at all what I expected. Instead of salmon, it was a dish with lox. Yes, I realize they both come from the same fish, but one is served hot and one is served cold (as well as dried and salty). The dish was okay; however, it was really not what I thought I was ordering and think the menu should make it clearer. Despite the disappointment and the overly salty brussel sprouts, I decided to see if their desserts were as delicious as ever. After all, this was my main reason for coming in. Turns out they rotate their menu and none of what I had previously loved was on the menu any longer. I would have been up for trying something new... but 2 of the three desserts had nuts in them (which I along with a ton of other people are allergic to) and the third was chocolate, which I do not like. I understand these things happen, but the waitress was super rude about it when she came to check what I wanted. I'm not sure if she had been drinking or was just snotty. We were a little thrown off by the name, thinking this was a dive, but it's really nice. The service is great and the food is interesting and tasty. My wife and I got a bunch of plates to share: Bacon & Brussels salad (I enjoyed it a little more than my wife); Sweet Soy Wings - my wife really like them; Baked Brie - my wife loved this and it's huge (great for sharing, but I don't care for Brie); Steak Tacos - I enjoyed them; House Pickled Vegetables (my wife was all over those), and Grilled Asparagus - those were all mine! read more

took me a year of having this place saved in my bookmarks to finally get here--but goddamn those wings had me flying high sweet-soy wings were crispy and delicious, with just the right amount sweetness and saltiness ribeye was cooked perfectly, but I bummed hard when I heard they didn't have steak sauce some acid would've been great for breaking up all that meatiness and carb overload of the dish P.S. if you're gonna do anything meaningful with your life, it should be trying these crispy brussel-sprouts--your life is mediocre without em super cute, retro, and laid back atmosphere; attentive staff and adorable old traditional style bully boy whiskey bottles filled with water on each table will be back for beer and wings soon! read more

Looked for a restaurant with good reviews that also happened to be open on a Tuesday, which was our 25th anniversary, to enjoy a meal together. Hadn't heard of this restaurant before, and were hoping the name was ironic, as we were coming from 30 minutes away. Setting up a reservation was a snap, and thankfully they use OpenTable, which makes everything easier. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find a modest building, and a full parking lot with enough space for us We were greeted at the door by a polite hostess, and immediately seated at our reserved table. The restaurant and bar area were buzzing with happy folks who all seemed to know each other. The waitress brought the menus, which were brief, but focused, and when I say EVERYTHING on the menu sounded excellent, that's not an exaggeration! We got the mini Gyros and apricot bruschetta for appetizers. The Mini Gyro were absolutely delicious! Served like little tacos! The bruschetta were savory. My wife got the bay scallop bucatini, and I got the seared ahi tuna. Both meals were delicious, good looking, and the right temperature. I have to say, I loved the tuna bowl. So good! Highly recommended! The service was friendly and thoughtful. The atmosphere was semi-private, but lively. The restaurant was very thoughtfully decorated. Always good...we have been going to The Shanty for years. Drinks are great, and the menu is solid.

Rustic ambience. A bit chilly so bring a jacket. Apps: yam fries which were steak fry style. Super crispy on the outside and the perfect amount of softness on the inside. I really liked their cilantro aioli that came with it. I mixed it with Tabasco and it was perfection. Brussel sprouts. Perfectly crispy but a bit oiler than I anticipated Sirloin. Ordered medium rare but came out rare. Still delicious. The chimichurri sauce on the top was fantastic. It sat on a bed of greens which lacked flavor and texture. TV dinner. Chicken perfectly crisp and moist on the inside but the batter wasn't seasoned. The smoked Mac and cheese tasted a bit more like butter than cheese (but my friend who loves Mac and cheese loved it) the Cole slaw was great. The corn was charred nicely and sweet and buttery. This was the perfect restaurant for our recent dinner with family. Food was great, prices were reasonable, service was attentive, and the atmosphere was cozy. We were a party of seven, so we called ahead for a reservation, which I love that they take. We were tucked back in the back and enjoyed the warm corner, and the fact that there was no loud music so we could easily talk to each other. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the fish and chips and the fries were amazing. They are generous with the portions too. I also got to try the bacon and brussel sprout salad, which I would order again. Well it has been a year since the Shanty opened, and they were on point then, since I have had okay dishes. I really want this place to rock, since I can walk there, but the kitchen is not up to my standards. I'm not very forgiving on food, and the craft. So please read my review with a grain of salt. I like the place, the staff and the menu however I think they need to tighten up the kitchen . I am willing to see the Shanty grow but I think the food is not up to the place. It's been less than a year since my last five star review of The Shanty, but every time I go there I never cease to be amazed with their cuisine, their staff, and their wonderful and friendly owner, Kara. I only wish they were open at lunchtime because I'd be dining there even more often! See my last review for basics re The Shanty, because this one is just to say how absolutely wowed hubby and I were with our most recent dinner. You must try their brand spanking new winter menu, containing many new drinks (I tried the Bar Maid and it was luscious!), new apps (pulled pork nachos were excellent), new salad: Roasted Brussel Sprouts salad with crispy chunks of pork belly, goat cheese and of course the delicious crunchy Brussel sprouts - to die for good (and HUGE)! Cioppino (delicious!) and the coupe de grace: Cold Fusion Creamery Cinnamon Ice Cream sandwich served between two magnificently, deliciously awesome Snickerdoodle cookies for dessert. We should have taken pix but we couldn't stop eating long enough to do so! You really need to try the Shanty if you have not - and if you have, go back! The new winter menu is awesome! read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in all of Rhode Island. Such a cozy spot with great drinks and even better food. Do yourself a favor and get the Bacon and Brussels salad. It's a personal favorite, and although they change up the menu quite a bit, the salad is a Shanty staple. (But really, you can't go wrong with anything you order). Service is always spectacular and it only gets better after a handful of "adult" chocolate milks. read more

Fantastic little spot with a great menu and friendly servers. We sat at the bar so we could glimpse at a hockey game throughout the meal. Both bartenders were great. We started with an order of wings, which were excellent (I would prefer non-battered wing, but the sauce was excellent). Wine selection was good. I had the bibimbat which was very tasty. Went here for the first time while traveling. It was wonderful. Everything was very good plus they had my favorite Reisling. We ordered the sirachi egg rolls which were top notch. I had the chicken over risotto and it was perfectly cooked. I couldn't have asked for anything more. The service was on it's A game as well. Had big expectations after reading the fellow Yelp reviews. Staff: lovely Ambiance: cool & hip and also clean Food: squash soup was VERY bold, smokey and a bit over salted. Lobster roll with fries- the lobster was SWIMMiNG in mayo and sat in a soggy pool of shredded lettuce on a buttered bun. I've had my fair share of lobster rolls being from New England- this was not a good example. I have to say the hand cut fries were delish. Chicken yellow curry- again very deep and smokey. Stopped here for dinner on a Sunday night. Overall a wonderful dining experience. My wife and I have driven past this small restaurant many times and finally made the time to check it out. We both were delighted with everything. Food, service, and drinks were great. The fish and chips were an excellent improvement on the standard fare that you would get in most places. The beer batter was perfect and the cod was obviously fresh, not the bland scrod that many places like to substitute. The house cut seasoned fries were a flavorful surprise and the artichoke tartar sauce was excellent. They were out of crab on our visit, so my wife's wedge salad was prepared with lobster instead, but this didn't hurt the dish. It was crisp, fresh, colorful and tasty. I seem to be rambling on a bit so one additional note, save room for dessert! They just added a bread pudding with pistachios and caramel that is amazing! I have been dying to try the Shanty since I first read a review in Rhode Island magazine. The TV dinner is fascinating but I am gluten free so that's out. No worries! They have plenty of dishes that fit my needs! My friend, Tina and I split the special....ground beef tacos. Very tasty! The rice is bland but we didn't really need it to fill up. We also split the Korean bbq lettuce tacos. Amazing! So fresh, perfectly spiced. 100% worth it! We chose to sit at the bar because we did not make reservations and we would've waited 40 minutes. The bar was perfect! We plan on trying every (gluten free) item on the menu! They even offered a gf tart! Please try this small, artsy, wonderfully yummy restaurant!! read more

Stumbled upon this place while driving. Live nearby and wish we discovered it sooner. Very quant atmosphere. Sat at the bar, bartender was very nice. We split the Brussels spout salad which was delicious. If we each ordered one I can't imagine being able to eat the main course. Very generous portion. Found the Shanty on Yelp while visiting RI from NJ. Made a last minute reservation Friday night for dinner, food, service and ambiance was excellent. Our server was great, food came out fast, hot and delicious(for the most part). We started with the flaky flavorful mushroom tart, I had had the bacon and Brussel salad with shrimp, my dad had the fish and chips we both loved our meal. Mom had the appetizer beef taco's as her meal, the beef was so tough, she had to spit it in a napkin, the flavor was there, the cut of the beef was wrong. I took one star off for that. Even with the beef being tough we will certainly return when we are in town. We are in RI quiet often. read more

Went the other day with my partner. I ordered the rack of lamb which was good. My partner ordered the steak medium rare and it came out well done. We sent it back and it came back medium well. He also thought the steak tasted off and low quality. The waitstaff were super nice and did give us free dessert because of the steak. I would not go back due to food quality. read more

Do you want to pay restaurant prices for a fast food experience? Go here! The worst part was the waitress, she made us feel like she had a stop watch going and after a certain amount of time she was going to personally pick us up and throw us out. I read on the reservation that it only guarantees that you can have your table for 1 hr and 15 min but this woman acted like it was her personal mission to turn over her tables in record time no matter what. Now I understand if it was busy or if she was trying to close everyone out at the end of her shift but her section had a handful of open tables and it wasn't at the end of her shift because it was 2 hours before closing. She was so pushy that after dropping the bill (we'd been there for 40 minutes) she came over, opened up the billfold, and then asked us for our cards. I've literally never had that happen anywhere. I just wanted to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and she was shoving us out the door every step of the process. The menu sounds like it's innovative and interesting but in reality the food falls far short of the expectations they write. The drinks were just bad, not like they had too much alcohol, they just didn't taste good. The food was under seasoned and the duck and butternut squash ravioli was drowning in a pool of sauce with some 4-5 scraps of left over duck on top, not exactly worth $29. The decor in the restaurant is nice but unless you go at an off hour, the parking lot is a nightmare, it's very small and hard to navigate since most people drive SUV's nowadays. The chalkboard at the front door features the local farms from which The Shanty sources all their ingredients, emphasizing their farm-to-table philosophy. The Shanty prides itself on the gourmet reimagining of certain classic comfort foods. While the menu does change seasonally, certain staples are always present. Most notable is the TV Dinner which features a delicate fried Cornish game hen, smoked mac-and-cheese, cole slaw, a seasonal vegetable (currently sweet potato mash), and a seasonal dessert (currently an apple crumble). Other popular menu items include the flavorful Sweet Soy Wings and the mouthwatering Yam Fries that are served with a charred poblano cilantro aioli and are so good, you may never crave a regular potato fry again. Over the years and countless visits to the Shanty, I have come across so many incredible seasonal dishes and specials that have sadly came and went. Some that come to mind include the tuna tartare nachos, the lobster bread pudding, and the seafood crepes. The bright side of an ever changing menu is that I'm constantly discovering new favorites almost each time I visit.
