The Soup Market in the Milwaukee Public Market is a favorite of ours there, but this location seems like a different business, entirely. There's a young male employee here, who's attitude is just the worst, and is doing the business a disservice. On one visit my mom tried to order about four different sandwiches, to all which he deadpan replied "we're out of that", until we had to prod him to tell us what actually was available. (Also, not sure why they were out of so many items on their menu). On a different visit, I was ordering soup for a sick friend, ordered my soups and then asked about which soup "stocks" they had (an item always on the menu at the Public Market). Same employee responded with derision for asking for an item that this location does not offer- as if I was wasting his time, and was asking for an item way out of bounds for the Soup Market. I love the Soup Market soups (I'm a devoted customer at the MKE Public Market location), but this location is severely lacking. read more

Visited Vliet Street location. Ordered a cup of the Indonesian Chicken Satay soup and a cup of the Chicken & Sausage Gumbo. Both were delicious! I added a chunk of fresh house-baked bread for $.99, and that was also really good. They forgot to add the butter, but I took the order home so I had butter there. The pace is small, and it was busy on my visit, but the two employees seemed to have a system that worked, and we were all provided service and received our food fairly quickly. I bought my soup from Sendik's just for reference sake, it wasn't from the store and it was reheated. I bought the vegetable tomato florentine with orzo pasta. It was AMAZING with flavor. My only issue is the carrots were in HUGE chucks. Maybe that is pleasing to others, but if I have a small pasta, I like my vegetables smaller. I will definitely buy it again. What a pleasant surprise right in the Heights!! I was hesitant to go based off of prior reviews mentioning service but I have nothing bad to say about the service! We opted for a cup of chicken noodle, a cup of tomato basil bisque and a Rueben. The noodles and chicken were added to the bowl first and the broth + veg was poured over the top. I love this idea because it keeps the noodles fresh but it also ensures you get a similar amount of noodles and meat each cup or bowl you order! It was a yummy chicken noodle but not the best I've had. The tomato bisque, on the other hand. Omg. Out of this world. It was phenomenal!!!! A little chunky, flavorful and it had a beautiful color to it. I dunked my Rueben in the soup and loved the combo. While making the Rueben the girl asked if I wanted sauerkraut and cheese - yes and yes. She also asked if I wanted thousand island dressing - yes. I'm glad she asked!! Not everyone wants all the toppings! Our order was placed for take out so she packaged the dressing in its own container so the sandwich wouldn't get soggy. This Soup Market is located on Vliet street on the south side of the Washington Heights area. It is a small retail store front that has limited seating and appears to be set up mostly for carry out. I've been to this location twice, now. Both times, I have gone to get soup to carry out. Both times, I have ordered the tomato bisque, which I think is outstanding; some of the best tomato bisque I have eaten. Price point, wise, some may consider the soup may be a bit expensive. I've only purchased the quart to go and notice that I pay several dollars more for the quart than at other restaurants that sell soup-to-go. It is nice to have a neighborhood soup shop so close to home. Its convenient to park at the unrestricted street curb, run in, and take some delicious soup home for a quick meal. read more

Stopped by here on my way home sick from work yesterday, wanting some comfort food. The place is very small with just a couple tables, but those tables were full. They had about 8-10 options for soup, and a few options for cold sandwiches, grilled sandwiches and salads. I got a pick two for about $7, with a cup of broccoli cheddar and a half ham/swiss sandwich on a pretzel bun. Service wasn't friendly, just "what do you want" and "next". I was in and out in a few minutes though so it was efficient. When I asked for the broccoli cheddar he just grabbed a bag and slit it open on the line and dumped it all in. When I got home, the soup was not hot and the bigger chunks of broccoli were in fact cold. The sandwich had a good amount of ham on it so I appreciated that. read more

Treated like crap...great soup! Ever go to a target, Walmart or other big box store and your presence and willingness to give them your hard earned money seems like it's a pain in there ass to take? That was my experience. No warm greeting no Q&A about the place the soups or the process of ordering. There was 1 other person in there so it wasn't that it was busy at all. Originally, this empty property was set to be a place called "The 53rd Street Deli." I was interviewed and hired and the place quietly never grew over months and months.It never opened. Then one day a giant sign went up telling me that The Soup Market (known for its Bay View location on KK) was going to open. Not sure what went down, but I was still pumped. The place is extremely tiny. There are about 4 tiny tables with tiny chairs in a narrow space in front of their counter, which takes up a good 75% of the space. That is okay, I always get my soup to go. The soup is delicious and fairly priced for a quart. They have fresh bread they make daily that I can purchase for next to no money. It really helps for a poor college student. I haven't tried their sandwiches yet. Service has been great and we were given a 10% neighborhood discount the last time we went. read more

When I was in my late teens I worked as a lunch-time server at a local pub. It was a pretty much a bar that slung fish fries and club sandwiches to white and some blue collar guys. What always surprised me was the reverence some of customers had for our homemade soups. Rain or shine, I remember these weird loyalists who came in JUST for the soup all year long. I remember one guy telling me, "Do you know how hard it is to find a place that serves great homemade soups?" He did not mean it to be question, he was reprimanding me for not taking this soup thing seriously. That was a LONG time ago and I have never been casual about homemade soup since. The Soup Market makes 6 Homemade Soups daily. One can refer to the 'Soup of the Day' on the website, but that would be for the amateur move. I recommend you go to the Soup Market's Soup Forecast to craft a strategy. I recommend Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday or whenever you can get Grilled Shrimp & Black Bean Soup with Guacamole, Mardi Gras Chili with Beans, Vegetarian Fennel & Brussels Sprouts Bisque and the all important, must-have African Peanut Soup. These selections tell you something about the artisan quality of the creations but the actual implementation is outstanding. No large stainless steel tubs steaming the soups all day until they reduce down to a thick sludge of salty bouillon. Bags of perfectly preserved product are kept in hot water baths and are tapped only once the service line runs out. And they do run out. The Vliet Street location is tight because of the soup's popularity and added to the homey feel of a soup place. The service was fine and almost beside the point (I'm not reviewing a generation or making a commentary about people self-absorbed with social media), This place is great and does soup really well. Love this place! We live near by and eat hear at least once a week. Everything tastes great, it's an easy in and out without feeling that heavy "fast food" feeling. One time I even dropped my whole bowl on the side walk just outside, and they replaced my order no problem. read more

I think of it as "The Soup Store". And I love the soups. But there are a couple of things that are crazy. The other locations have a "soup forecast" on the The Soup Market's website. It gives you a chance to see when your absolute favorites will be available. For instance, I am IN LOVE with the African peanut chicken soup. But it's not always being served. I can look online at the other stores and see when it will be available, but the Vliet location does not seem to participate in this forecast thing. Honestly, it would be a huge help. I've also had sandwiches that I loved. I enjoy going but like anything else in the neighborhood, parking can be a challenge. Vliet Street always feels a little frightening when you have to park on it. I will come back because of the soup and I am hoping for a forecast! read more

I went back to The Soup Market to give it another shot. I tried three more soups. The worker gave me the completely wrong soup but I didn't realize it until I got home. I clarified multiple times which ones I was ordering, so maybe it was an off day for her, either way it was incorrect. I do know now to ask for bread that hasn't been cut. I got 3 pieces this time (1 that had been sliced off already and 2 that the worker sliced in front of me from a new loaf.) The pre-cut slice was stale on the outside but the other 2 pieces were good. The worker told me I could always heat the bread back up in the oven if it is stale, but that doesn't really help when you are taking it back to the office. I'd still keep a 3 star review. The soups are decent but nothing mind-blowing. They suffice to hit the spot on a cold day. read more

This location is close to home, making a last-minute lunch super easy. I've only seen two staff there and they are pleasant, but certainly not good at customer service. The man seems constantly confused about what he should be doing, and the young woman was wearing pajama shorts one day. Service is quick, things usually taste good, and my soup was only cold once. They have a few sandwiches if you need an accompaniment to your soup, but they have a great selection of soups and always a vegetarian choice. The cookies are also pretty good. Good tasting soup but quantity is pathetic. I had a tasty stew a few months ago so went back and tried the chicken dumpling twice since, only to find a few dumplings and pieces of chicken. The both is kept separate and they add the chicken and dumplings w/a small scoop (less than 1/8 cup size) and then charge $7.00. Price is high for a bowl of broth! Staff is nice. read more

I'm out an out-of-towner that occasionally travels to Milwaukee for work, and I love coming here for lunch on a chilly winter day. The soups are delicious and affordable. Bowls of hearty vegetable soup are less than $8 with tax. Everything about this place is great except for their choice of takeout material. They're using styrofoam containers. Polystyrene foam may seem like a cheap convenient material, but its true costs to health and our environment are borne by others, including taxpayers and consumers. Milwaukee should ban polystyrene take-out food containers. They are not recyclable and their known carcinogens leach into food. Safer, more sustainable alternatives are easily available. I would happily pay more for my Soup Market soup if they would switch to a recyclable alternative. If Panera can do it with their soups, so can Soup Market! read more

Visited this location on three occasions. First time I ordered an andouille sausage soup, paid for it, waited, and then was told it was sold out. It was 10:30 in the morning. (They open at 10:30 in the morning!) The girl behind the counter looked at the digital menu above her and confessed that she couldn't identify any of the soups warming before her because the manager hadn't updated the menu. So I settled for a "chicken something." It was good, so I stopped in a week later. This time I ordered the root vegetable stew. When I got in my car and opened the bag, I had the root vegetable stew and a nice chunk of bread, but not butter, napkins or utensils. The stew was lackluster at best, probably because it was lukewarm, but I decided to make a third visit, anyway. It was the coldest day of the year and I wanted soup. I didn't want to stop because I dreaded the inept service, but it was close and I rationalized that the soup was probably made in Bay View and shipped to the Vliet Street store, so if I kept an eye on them, I could get great soup at a decent price. Simple enough. I ordered the chicken dumpling. I grabbed a bag, packed my own napkins, asked twice for a spoon, got a fork, asked again and got a knife and the requested spoon, and then had one of the girls journey somewhere in the back to return with a single pat of frozen butter. When I returned to work and opened my soup, five minutes after ordering it, on the coldest day of the year, it was cold. Six bucks for a bowl of cold soup. Suffice it to say, I crossed the Soup Market on Vliet Street off my list. And I'll have second thoughts about stopping in at the Bay View store again. read more

I could go 5 stars for the soup and 1-2 for the service. While the younger kids that work here are unpolished but at least pleasant, the woman running the register most Fridays leaves much to be desired. She is consistently short and unpleasant, reluctant to give anything but perfunctory service. Have a Small Shops card? "Well, give me your phone number because the card screws up the machine!" Ask a question about the menu and get reprimanded because you should be reading what's above. Want crackers instead of bread? Better be happy with one packet after reminding her that she didn't put them in your bag. She behaves as though the customer is lucky to be there, not the other way around. During today's visit, they were out of turkey and tuna salad by 12:20. The other locations aren't run this way. A quality product like this shouldn't be marred by a consistently poor customer service experience. read more
