Inside the hotel is very pretty, but overall the facilities are not competitive with The Peninsula or other spas in the area. Also the service list is pretty limited, for example there are no oxygen facials or upgrades that other spas in the area offer. Came to the Palmer House for a pedi and had Sheena with the essential pedicure. She was very helpful and kind. Helped me in the pedi cube and had me choose my color. She cut, shaped and filed as my toes needed it! It was very relaxing. There were other people either staying at the hotel or just coming in for their service. My boyfriend booked a surprise massage for me bc we were staying here for Valentine's weekend. I get checked in and the lady tells him there is a 18% gratuity included already. Not sure if that was mentioned when booking. Followed the lady to the spa area and went to change. Robes are comfy and I was told to wait to be called. They asked if I want water or wine but I didn't know if wine was extra so I asked for water. Got called and was helped by sandy I think her name was. Awesome service and a clean, calming setting. The vicchy shower treatment was very good, but felt a little uneven because the specialist manually mover the showerheads back and forth. The spa could also use a more comfortable sitting area once you're in your robe. These didn't take away from us having a really good experience, but if addressed would make it pretty much perfect! read more

This review was tough to right because there are some good staff there such as Gloria. However, this review is regarding management. As someone who's been to the spa twice in the past, I can honestly say that I think it's a great place to go but is poorly managed. The first time I went, the manager, Danielle was very nice and her staff was good. Again, I really hit it off with massage assistant Gloria. Moreover, what enticed me to come back was that I got a discount for buying two massages. Fast forward to last month. When I asked if I bought two massages, can I get a discount like I did last time. Danielle told me that she couldn't on the weekends because " the weekends are our busiest times and we have to honour our masseuse contracts." When I explain to her that you guys gave me a discount last time for two massages and it was on the weekend she replied " well I can't speak to that." Even though she was the one that gave me the discount! Then I received an email saying that she could do it if I bought an additional couples massage for over $500. To me, it just felt greedy. I tried to get a discount for the two massages that I bought last time, and this time she's not able to give me a discount for the two massages, but will give me a discount if I buy three. And again, I had to spend an additional $500. When I got there, I was able to see Gloria again and she was very nice. Danielle, on the other hand was a different story. She was very crass, sassy and unprofessional. Not to mention, she didn't even greet me, even though she knew who I was. In all, well, there are some good massage staff there, I just think management ruins it for everyone. I'm not sure I would go back there. It was a complete let down. Especially considering I went back there because I enjoyed the first time. My recommendation is to use the spa elsewhere. There are plenty good ones in the city. Thankfully I used a groupon and didn't pay full price. However, what I got still didn't seem worth the $199. The gal who did my mani and pedi was sweet, but like she said.... she painted like a two year old. Overall I think she did a really good as the cuticles are nicely trimmed, nails filed well, polish is smooth & she got in the corners. Unfortunately she also painted my skin (which she was good about cleaning up). The salon had a decent variety of seasonal colors (reds, dark colors) a few brights and handful of neutrals. Something (hopefully) for all. The guy who did my massage.....I swear he had to have had on sandpaper gloves 'cause his hands were ROUGH. Kind of made my skin crawl. Thankfully, the service was shortened since my previous one went over and I had another to go to. Anyway, the massage wasnt at all relaxing. I left feeling like I need another. The gal who did my facial was very friendly and welcoming. Oddly, feels like she spent more time massaging my arms, shoulders and legs. Anyway the facial was ok. She tackled the areas i mentioned as a concern, but when I left I saw there were still spots that needed to be extracted. Now the room was dim, so maybe that's why she missed areas. Guess they could use brighter bulbs. Also, at one point she was using coconut oil on my face. I was a bit surprised (i could have used that at home). I thought salon quality products would be used. Three things that really bugged me were: 1) there weren't locker rooms; i had to undress in a bathroom. 2) there arent any lockers so I had to carry my stuff from appointment to appointment. 3)there's no relaxation room so once all done I had to just sit in chairs right by the bathroom, treatment rooms, and everyone (in the spa area) walking by........oh, while holding my purse, coat, and bag of my clothes. I've been to several spas from Aveeda Institute serviced by students to The Four Seasons..... this was sadly the worst. read more

Beautiful Spa but honestly one of it not the worst massage I've ever had. I've held off on not writing this review for awhile but every time I reminisce and look at old photos I become slightly disgruntled. For starters this was a gift from my best friend and she shelled out $300 on a gift certificate as a birthday gift. I was honestly saddened because I wanted to say no thank you friend . I know how hard she works for her coin but I also knew that there were so many other spas in Chicago with better service. It was the day before my birthday and I decided what the hey I may as well book a room for the night and utilize my spa certificate. For starters the hotel is EXTREMELY dated from the hallways to the guest rooms, it seriously needs an upgrade. I made my appointment and at no time was I told that the spa would be closing at the time I made my appointment. I arrived early to check in but because of the confusion in finding the right stairway and elevator to get up to the spa I was 10-15 minutes late for my appointment. I was their last client for the day. I was honestly surprised expecting a full spa experience seeing is that the service was $165 plus an automatic gratuity. I was reluctant because I actually felt bad for the masseuse who'd talked the entire time of my service. I'm all for being communicative but it's my time to relax and release my own stresses and I had to hear about her and her car accident and her and her husbands injuries the entire time. I'm always open to being a sounding board for others and do have a way where people just naturally open up to me but this particular day I just wanted peace. She explained she had just been recovering from an injury and only worked there on Sundays. The massage itself was lackluster and I honestly cried out of shear disappointment when I left. I wish my friend could've gotten her money back. The entire experience was horrible. All I wanted for my birthday was some peace and quiet and to relax and actually have a good massage. I've been to so many places throughout Chicago and have had way better experiences at places that I've paid $60-$100 for, places which I would gladly til and revisit. I have been holding on the remaining balance of my gift card since. The service was so bad I haven't wanted to go back. No exaggeration it still haunts me a bit. The year started off extremely rocky for me and I've had to endure a lot since the beginning of the pandemic (to which we all have). My friend knew I needed this and while she tried her best this was NOT the experience I was hoping for. I expected for almost $200 that I wouldn't be rushed into my service or that I'd actually experience being able to rinse off, take a shower, sip my champagne afterwards and enjoy the rest of the spa amenities. On another note if the spa closes at a certain time guest shouldn't even have the option to book an hour before the spa closes if the services are going to be rushed and you won't get the full experience. On the upside I can say the masseuse was pleasant and kind throughout the entire ordeal but I really just wanted some peace and quiet and an actual REAL massage, not someone just rubbing my body for 40 minutes. They also need better signage and directions on getting to the spa. Once you reach the floor of where the spa is located there are convention rooms but no real signage that leads you to the spa. It looks dated and creepy there to say the least. Only reason I'm even giving this place 2 stars is that I actually empathized with the woman whose just trying to make a living for herself and her family. The technician really had no clue what she was doing, misshaped nails, thick and uneven polish application that five hours later still is not dry and is smudging, painful cuticle removal. My friend and I decided to treat ourselves to a spa day. I walk past the Palmer House elevators to the spa on the way to work and decided to give it a go! The moment we checked in it already felt relaxing. Everyone was super friendly. The locker room/shower suite was an interesting set up but I assumed that was making use of the original architecture of the building. We did the hydro tub and a wellness massage. After our treatment we relaxed on the couches and were offered a beverage. I had tea and my friend had a glass of wine. I am admittedly NOT a spa person - I came here as part of a bachelorette party and was dreading it the entire weekend. I was slotted to get a facial, which I was equally unexcited about as I have an aesthetician in my family and could get a free facial if ever I really wanted one (I had plenty in my youth... I didn't want another). HOWEVER, on to the five stars - this experience was FANTASTIC! I had my facial with Gisele, who was an absolute gem and made an experience I was very unexcited for something I enjoyed most out of the entire weekend! The entire spa itself is beautiful - nothing super ornate like the rest of the hotel, but simple and relaxing. Upon arrival, we were offered water, tea, or wine (wine!) and filled out some paperwork while we waited for our respective services. Gisele came and asked me questions about any problem areas I felt I had with my face and really wanted to know what my priorities were. She seemed to adapt the service to fit what I was looking for, and explained all of the products used and what their purpose was. Coming from a family that used a lot of the same products on the job, this was awesome! My face felt great afterwards, and Gisele is also a massage therapist so gave some great arm/neck massages while whatever was on my face sat and did its work. I had so much fun talking with Gisele and getting her recommendations on products. I highly recommend going to her! I was at the spa with six other ladies who had massages, mani/pedis, and hair blowouts. Everyone said that their service was great. I got the sole revival because I struggle with plantar fasciitis. There were three lotions set out. I love that this spa has tons of deals on sites like Groupon, Living Social, Yelp, and Gilt City. I bought a voucher for a facial on Gilt City. The facial I had was fantastic, shout out to Giselle for doing a great job! I would give the facial itself 5 stars. They use very gentle products and my skin felt so soft afterwards. I found the whole experience very relaxing. The overall look in the spa is very modern, which I would expect from a high end hotel. I like that they provide you with a robe and slippers. The biggest draw back of this spa is the layout and overall facilities of the hotel. I would give the facility 3 stars. In the spa (located on the 5th floor) you have to get changed in a bathroom and the waiting room is basically the hallway. Although all the chairs are very comfortable they definitely need a better waiting area that feels more intimate. To use the sauna, fitness center, and the pool you have to take the elevator up to the 8th floor. Once you get off the elevator there are no clear signs for which direction to walk in. The pool and the hot tub are a huge disappointment. The whole area seemed kind of dingy. The hot tub was dirty and underfilled. Although the pool area has comfy couches they don't have any long chairs to really lay out on. Lastly, there is no tranquility room, or anywhere even for some piece and quiet. I was really looking forward to lounging around and reading my book but that just wasn't a possibility. Especially since there were tons of kids in the pool. Overall if you are coming here for just the spa services then I would highly recommend, but if you are more looking for the Spa day experience then this is not where I would go. read more

I started out not too impressed but now I am WOWED by the services. I bought a Living Social package that really was a great deal. When I called several times to make the appointments, I had to leave a message- no one was there during regular business hours to make an appointment? When I finally did get my appointments, they insisted on getting my credit card number to guarantee it, and explained the cancellation policy 3 separate times. Then I received 4 phone messages 48 hours prior confirming my appt and the cancellation policy. A bit of overkill. When I arrived, I had to ask for directions because the signing is sadly lacking. Take the State Street elevator to the 4th floor and go up the stairs to the almost completely unidentified spa area. (See my photos). I arrived early so I could get changed and start relaxing, but there was literally no one there to check me in. I called, and could hear the phone ringing at the desk right in front of me, but it went to voicemail. A little card or sign letting guests know what time someone is at the desk would be appreciated. At 8:40am a woman came out to the desk and started loading it up to prepare for the day. She checked me in and was pleasant and helpful, got me a robe, a locker, explained the pool etc. on the 8th floor. And from there it just got better and better. I started with a facial and it was one of the best I have ever had. The products were beautifully and subtly scented, the aesthetician skilled and friendly. She explained what she was doing as she went along without disrupting my relaxation. Next a massage. Heaven! I know I snored at least once but the masseuse was kind enough not to giggle. Last, a lovely mani pedi. I think I was upgraded, because the LS voucher said shape and polish. The nail area was very cool. The pedi stations were little banquets with pillows and a drop down table for a phone or whatever, with the mani stations right by the window. After my polish is dry, perhaps a swim? Nothing too special about this visit mind you this is the very nice Spa has a upscale feel to it even starting from the customer service desk But as far as the services which I'm critiquing they were subpar I did not enjoy the facial whatsoever it was the worst part of my service and the products used were not -african-american skin friendly . my face with your left with residue that I actually had to wash off she said it was a sunscreen that maybe the SPF was over 50 cuz it left and white waxy buildup on my face that I actually had to wash off twice in order to not have the residue It was not relaxing or very cleansing, the esthetician seemed preoccupied or just didn't want to be there The massage we opted to get a couples massage where we're pretty much massage in two separate rooms which had a wall that can be open so you can view the other person the massage was okay no real complaints other than she used her elbows a lot during the massage and I'm not used to that I'm used to hands a little bit of the forearm massage but 95% of mine was forearm only, that took a while to adjust to but she was very nice and kept checking to make sure I was okay I just wasn't used to her technique I had called The Spa because I was worried about the negative reviews and I found out what exactly they expected in needed of me so there won't be any problems as I was celebrating my anniversary so we arrive within the 15 minute grace period when he were able to get the robes wherever to get the shoes yes you do dress in the bathroom they do give you a bag to put your items in I don't see that as a problem you're able to store that in the room if it's a small spa you normally do get dressed in the rooms I don't really see an issue with that I don't need a locker , I did not have enough time to do the swimming in the sauna so I really can't speak upon that read more

Tierra was awesome! I am fairly new to Chicago, and had not gotten a haircut in about 8 months. The spa itself is gorgeous, very relaxing, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Tierra was very professional, but also very friendly and made me feel comfortable. The 1st time with a new stylist can be a little anxious. Tierra was very intuitive about what I wanted, happy to see Pinterest examples to make sure we were talking about the same look, and she was honest about what could or could not be done with the length, texture, condition of my hair. The entire process was very easy, comfortable, and professional. I highly recommend the spa, and Tierra, and I will surely be back! I was in town for Lollapalooza, and scored a VIP wristband and wanted to look my best, so I booked a hair blow dry and make-up session. I was very fortunate to get Melissa who did a fabulous job with both my hair and make-up - She was also a joy to spend time with, and gave me some great make-up tips for myself! I have been here several times prior to them closing the massage location down. I use to love this place. It was recently reopened last year and since it's closure this is my first time and I have been there. The layout is quite unique you enter on the fifth floor through the elevators closest to State Street upon entering the play relaxation music it's very neat and organized in there several different items that you can purchase their advertised in there waiting area. The seats in the circle waiting area I'm not too comfortable. You will get full access to the gym which is located on another floor if you use the spa services. They have several deals on Groupon and LivingSocial and travel zoo we can get spa packages at this location. They always have water tea or little snacks available. Staff are friendly. The massage was not great the masseuse started 10 minutes late it and 10 minutes early. When I brought this to the attention of staff they informed me that there's time allotted time for communication pertaining to the services. However prior to and following I did not communicate with the masseuse. I had already completed paperwork in advance. I felt that they stiffed me. In addition I asked for an additional service of a back melt. It was applied but left on my back. At the end of my service I was left asking for a hot towel and attempted to wipe off the waxy scrub. Removal should of been included or my therapist forgot. Well the competition is fierce in Chicago. How do you reopen to make silly mistakes such as this? The pedicure in a manicure stations are still on hard benches with pillows to provide support and minimal cushion. I'd say you could do better. read more

I bought a gift certificate online for a massage for my sister in law. I paid $100 for $200 in services. We went to get massages. When I made the appointment I mentioned the gift certificate. Once we arrived they told us that the certificate excluded massages. I guess I didn't read all of the fine print, but the woman I made the appointment with should have pointed this out. I asked to change my service to one covered by my certificate. They refused because I booked a masseuse. They had my credit card on file so I didn't have much choice in the matter. We got the massages and paid an extra couple hundred dollars. I left very angry and embarrassed. Before my gift card was going to expire I called to make an appointment. I wasn't going to throw the money away. They told me they could not honor my gift certificate because the spa had a new owner. They gave me the contact information for the previous owners. They, of course, did not return my messages. The spa has always been in and affiliated with Hilton. I hold them responsible for at least matching my gift certificate. This is fraud. I spoke to a manager at the front desk. She referred me back to the spa. She the offered to help. She said she would email the spa herself and then email me. I never heard from her. read more

Update from my previous review.... I'm changing my review from 1 Star to a 4star because Anne reach out to me to offer me a make up experience and I have to say it was awesome. They were EXTREMELY accommodating on when I could come and the service was exceptional. I was in serious need of a blowout and Samear did an AMAZING job, double wash, great attention to detail and awesome conversation. He is an A+ stylist. I would highly recommend him. All in all I believe that this spa wants you to have a great experience. I'd recommend voicing any dissatisfaction and give them an opportunity to make it right because they absolutely will. ‼(Previous Review)‼ Oh man!! I just left my Service and am completely disappointed and disgusted... besides the fact that my massage room was VERY LOUD (lots of traffic and elevator noise) I was massaged with cold lotion and the massage therapist seemed to forget what she was doing. A nice space tucked away from the hustle and bustle but having facilities on two different floors is really awkward. I've been here a few times - my last experience was an average massage and less than average facial with a very new esthetician. I understand that everyone needs to start somewhere and that service improves with training and experience. However, I resent being forced to pay an automatic 20% "gratuity" (before any promotional values) for average or sub par service. Gratuity: a favor or gift given without claim or demand. I had a fantastic manicure and pedicure here about 10 days ago. This is the first time I've had a manicure last 10 days. No chips, no breakage. The pedicure is still looking great, too! Yesenia took very good care of me. She was professional and friendly and thorough. I could see she took great care in the work she does. The facilities were clean, tidy, calm and serene. I was asked several times if I wanted tea or water. After my services I was invited to stay and relax while the nail polish dried. I was not rushed. I was having trouble scheduling a haircut at home, so I scheduled one here during my stay at the Palmer House. I am so glad that I made an appointment - Sameer was fantastic! His experience and expertise as a hair stylist was much appreciated it. He gave me a hairstyle that was more flattering and fit my face more than before. I really enjoyed our conversation and felt this was a genuine experience. I would highly recommend Sameer and would love to come back if I didn't live so far away! My first visit was so great that I came back the next day for a massage! Lily was a wonderful massage therapist - she paid attention to the areas that needed the most TLC. I felt connected with her and enjoyed our light conversation as she took care of me. Would certainly come back again - it was a fantastic way to treat myself. read more
