    Classic Italian Cold Cut
    Evelyn W.

Got the South Philly Steak and Classic Italian last night, both on the homemade seeded rolls and they were fantastic. The team is generous with all the high quality ingredients, the price is so justified. Also, kept half the South Philly Steak for leftovers and it reheated beautifully the next day in the airfryer. But beyond that, it's a small unassuming place and the owner is a great guy. He has created a small business that makes you feel really good about supporting. He's doing great things for the community AND the subs are incredible.

1/8" thick steak with lots of gristle
    Mike M.

I really want to like this place, I honestly do. Their pizza is good, and the chicken parm is solid. Unfortunately, the steak and cheese is a hard pass. I ordered the South Philly steak. They were out of long hots, which isn't a huge deal, but seems would be a major part of the flavor profile. It comes with a garlic aioli, which I'd strongly recommend skipping. It's extremely heavy on the aioli with very little garlic flavor, and the added provolone actually takes away from the overall taste rather than enhancing it. The real issue, though--the nail in the coffin--was the steak itself, which is obviously the most important part. It's advertised as being shaved fresh on site, but the trimming and consistency need serious work. I ended up throwing away more than half the sandwich. Even picking through the meat, a large portion consisted of thick, roughly 1/8-inch thick slices full of gristle (see picture) that were impossible to chew. That's not what I expect from a $19 cheesesteak. I'd expect that quality from a Market Basket sandwich, not from a place like this, and that was genuinely disappointing. As a side note, the house-baked sesame roll is a nice touch, but it really should be toasted. As served, it was overly soft and heavier than a typical sub roll. Two stars solely based on the cheesesteak. It's not a one-star review only because the pizza and chicken cutlets are still good here.

    Pepperoni Pizza

First time visiting the Square Deli. It will not be my last. We ordered a pepperoni pizza with hots and all I can say is it was the best pie north of New Haven I have ever had. Absolute perfection. The photo says it all ... the ingredients were world class, preparation was masterful, and the char was epic! After we chatted about the steak sub with some patrons I had the opportunity to try a steak and cheese ... again, just amazing! Sliced ribeye, cooper sharp, and a seeded bun ... an homage to the best in Philly. Do not miss this experience! Thank you Chris ... see you soon!

Steak & Cheese w/ peppers and onions

Tried this place today for the first time. It was packed ! We waited for steak and cheese on sesame bread for almost half an hour ( i'm not complaining-- it's a popular spot :) My husband loved it, and i ... liked it. It definitely good quality meat, good chunks of nicely cooked peppers and onions ( we asked to add it ) and lots of cheese , but the bread was a little burned and the meat was under seasoned to my taste. Yet we would definitely go back.

Cheese pizza (labeled "Our Cheese" in the online menu).

Wow. Just wow. After getting pies from here over the years, I've gotta say, THIS is the best place for a pizza in the Boston area in my book. I've ordered their cheese pizza ("Our Cheese" in the online menu) for pickup on several occasions, and it always hits the spot. The tomato and basil combo is fantastically done in particular. I can't even wait until I'm home to eat - I usually wolf down a slice right then and there once I get into the car. The shop itself is also easy to get in and out of for pickups (they've got an insulated rack near the door itself), and it feels like your classic neighborhood pizza spot atmosphere. So happy we've got Square Deli around. I've been getting pizza in the Boston area for over 25 years, and this is for sure the spot!

It's a regular average size sub actually I think Meridian Market Lodge subs are bigger than that

They offer BBQ plates, sandwiches, wraps, chicken wings, chicken tenders, fried foods (fries, okra, pickles), and sides (mac n cheese, candied yams, garlic mashed potatoes, rice, collard greens, BBQ pit beans, potato salad, grilled vegetables, & potato salad). The pricing is moderate. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($16.99 plus hospitality fee and tax) served with choice of side and pickles. Since I parked very close to the food stall, I sat in my vehicle (with flashers) for 5 minutes and quickly retrieved my order. The pulled pork sandwich was a good size with cole slaw, tender sweet BBQ pulled pork on a thick soft egg bun. The pulled pork was mostly lean meat, a bit dry, but it tasted just fine. The potato salad was pretty good, which had firm gold potatoes, chopped red onions, celery, egg, mustard, mayo, and seasonings and dill pickle chips on the side. I enjoyed my food in the vehicle before heading back home. I will have to try some of their other meats and sides on the next visit to Wade BBQ.

Unless you wanna wait an hour or so, it's best to arrive 30min before they open to beat the rush. It's incredibly cramped and rushed inside, and you may need to share a table with others if you're a smaller party. Food is quite pricey but well worth it. We ordered the oysters (they've got a variety so you can choose), clam chowder, lobster roll, cioppino, and johnnycake. Oysters were fine, but the clam chowder was absolutely dismal. Not sure what happened, especially since it's so highly rated, but it was extremely watery and almost completely unseasoned. It could've definitely used salt at the very least. If I didn't know it was from Neptune, I'd have given it a 2/10. To my relief, the lobster roll was the total opposite. Succulent, juicy, heavenly. It was like being in Maine. The cioppino was also very good. The Johnnycake was an interesting but fun way to end the meal. It's a sweet pancake-like cornmeal covered in a syrupy glaze and topped with smoked bluefish paste, crème fraiche and caviar. I've never had anything like it. Nothing was super overpriced, but I personally prefer next door (Paulini's), which is much cheaper and while it isn't as good, it also doesn't require waiting in an hour in line. However, I think Neptune's is definitely worth a try as long as you're willing to wait in line.

The sauce was very buttery/oily but lacked depth in flavor imo. It was greasy, mushy and bland at the same time. Octopus itself was pretty good. Lobster pasta: enjoyable overall but the lobster tasted rubbery/overcooked. It might be better if they just toss the lobsters in towards the end instead of cooking it so much. The lobster meat portion was very generous. Overall, I was not disappointed, but also I wasn't super impressed.

They were the dark horse that I never would have thought about ordering normally. Biscuits for dinner? Eh. But they were delicious and lighter than expected and the pimento cheese I could have ate by the spoonfuls. The oysters were clean and delicious. Everything you hope to have from Northeast oysters especially being from Texas where most of the places here serve Gulf oysters that don't even come close to comparing. I could have drank the mignonette. The pimento mac n cheese was on point and flavorful (and again that pimento cheese, yum). The wagyu burgers were so good. The burger was tender and flavorful, the bread was soft and light and slightly sweet, and the onion ring added a great texture to the mix. Think of a amped up western burger. The ambiance was a cool vibe yet a home feel. We were seated quickly but it took awhile for anyone to acknowledge us. Service was good once it started and the food came out quickly. If we ever make it back to Boston, it will definitely be on our list to revisit. Great late dinner spot. Simple foods done right. (Oh, and the drinks were delicious. I wanted to try them all. The philosophy here is simple: handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and the kind of lively trattoria energy that makes you feel like you wandered into something real rather than something staged for tourists. We walked into a small, intimate space that feels authentically old North End, with street level seating and a downstairs dining room that fills up fast on most nights. The energy when it gets loud and busy only adds to the warmth of the room, making the meal feel more fun rather than overwhelming. If you are looking for a quiet, candlelit dinner, timing your visit carefully or requesting a window table upstairs is worth doing. The vibe otherwise is bustling and inviting, the kind of place where the noise level actually enhances the experience. The pasta is where things really shine. The truffle mushroom ravioli is outstanding, the kind of dish that stays with you, and the lobster diavolo has real depth and kick to it. The seafood plate, loaded with scallops, shrimp, sea bass, salmon, lobster, and calamari over fettuccine alfredo, is a serious undertaking in the best possible way. The zucchini flowers are delicate and worth ordering if they are available. Bread comes to the table, and the drinks are solid. On the flip side, some of the simpler pasta dishes can feel under seasoned compared to the more composed plates, and the pricing reflects the neighborhood, so you are not walking out cheap. Service is generally warm and attentive, with a mix of staff that has that authentic Italian restaurant feel. The pacing moves at a good clip, sometimes a little fast, but the energy of the room makes it work. For a North End dinner that delivers on homemade pasta and fresh seafood without trying too hard to be anything other than what it is, Trattoria Il Panino is a solid pick.
