I've attended two different events: Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. The event is three courses and if you don't think you'll get full from hors d'oeuvres, you're seriously mistaken! Love this place. You enter a fantasy world straight out of Downton Abbey, or Edwardian England, and spend two hours sipping three different types of tea, which are perfectly paired with three different food courses. First savory, then scone heaven with freshly-made clotted cream and a jam (ours was a blood orange curd), then the dessert course, if you didn't get enough sweetness from the scones ladened with their accoutrements. They have fancy hats lining the wall leading into the various tearooms. These tearooms can house large groups all the way down to curtained off rooms for four people. The decor is divine and the waitstaff equally so. If your group is small (four or less people), you get to escape into your own little drawing room with the curtain drawn to give you privacy from other guests wishing the same privacy. My friend and I barely noticed there were others doing the same thing just feet away from us. We were thoroughly submerged into another world. Beware: If you're not used to eating a ton of sugar, you may find yourself in a post sugar coma the rest of the day, like I did. Those two hours with my friend were pure heaven, but boy did I suffer afterward. It was worth it. I agree with Lyssa D. about asking for two savory courses the next time I go. For the sweet, I'd stay with the scones course. And beware: The amount of food in front of you is misleading. Yes, they all are samplings, but those samples add up quickly. You may find yourself slowing down on the eating and almost wishing there wasn't more to try. But it's all good. If you can pace yourself, do. It's such a shame there aren't more options here in ABQ. Coming from a big city with about a dozen options for afternoon tea, there is a range of options to suit everyone's taste. I personally enjoy afternoon tea somewhere posh and elegant (e.g. The Drake Hotel Michigan Ave) not kitschy or froufrou. That being said St. James tearoom isn't my style. The tea was good, the service could have been better. I asked the woman waiting on us if she could bring an extra cucumber sandwich because I am semi-vegetarian and did not want to partake in the chicken salad, something that was conveyed when the reservation was made. And she basically said no. The reservation process was a bit awkward, you leave a voicemail message and they call you back. About once a year, I venture into this Tearoom for some tea with my fellow female engineers for a fun celebration. Year after year, St. James Tearoom has always been consistent with their introduction of each different type of teas, how to drink them as well as pairing them with the delicious finger foods. If you're ever in Albuquerque, you simply must go there. And if you're the sort of person that responds to the fact that a millennial just said simply must instead of have to go, then believe me this is the place for you. We were absolutely flabbergasted by how incredible this place is. Firstly, the tea comes in at around $43 before tax with service included ( but do leave a tip anyway, as the service is some of the best you will ever encounter). We've paid up to three times that amount for high tea in major markets like Los Angeles and London, and didn't have half the experience that we had here today. I'm sure other reviews will tell you about how each month the tea is themed, but what they may not tell you is the unbelievable amount of love, care, and attention to detail that has gone into every aspect of this business. It was the kind of attention to detail that you would expect from a hopeless romantic DIY-er who had an unlimited wedding budget. It was my birthday, and I was greeted with a special note on my table, a signed card on heavyweight stationary, and as I left I was given enough tea to make a large pot of my favorite tea that we tried that day (To top it off, as soon as you finish a pot of tea they give you a different flavor to try). We dined in the lovely, calming Garden because of covid concerns, but our excellent server offered to give us a tour once our tea had finished. The inside feels like Disneyland, yet manages to be sophisticated. Every aspect is themed down to the smallest detail. The service rivals the Waldorf Astoria, and the gift shop is excellently curated. This business honestly makes me wish that I could go back to every other five star review I've ever given, and give them a four or four and a half, because it's so vastly overshadowed almost any meal I've ever had. This will absolutely be one of my favorite meals in my life, because it was such an incredible and Unforgettable experience. How I wish there was something comprable in Los Angeles. THIS PLACE IS LEGIT. I have never been to a tea room before and this far exceeded any of my expectations. The portion sizes were small, but with the selection of finger food, I left extremely full. I just love afternoon tea, and St James Tearoom is an afternoon tea experience that is truly unique. Their set menu changes on a monthly basis and is always based on a theme. One month it could be Jane Austen and The Chronicles of Narnia a different month. The thing that is most unlike any other tea experience I have had is that each party gets their own secluded little "nook" in which they take tea. Each nook is filled with cozy, vintage furniture. I came here on Friday as a girls night out/baby celebration. None of us had ever been before. The experience was really wonderful. Very intimate setting. I would say it is semi private because there were curtains between the tables so you couldn't see your neighbors but you could hear the conversation. There were 5 of us so we had two couches and a small long narrow table between us. My only real complaint is that we could have used more space on the table. It was pretty tight with all the dishes. The food was amazing! There were three courses, savories, breads, and sweets. My favorite was the sweet bread with the curdled cream. Our server was very nice. Initially I had told them just a few of us wanted decaf/herbal and we all ended up drinking that. The decaf was just a regular decaf black tea. It wasn't too bad. Then we had the lemon soufflé. It smells and tastes like a sugar cookie. This was my favorite. We ended the night with Van Gogh Smiling which is a beautiful pink color. Be warned! You MUST make a reservation, even for a party of two. They only make enough food for each sitting time and that's it. I was able to make our reservation with a 48 hour notice although I recommend giving them a little more time. We cut it close with the special food requests (vegetarian). read more

Ok so this is just an update to a previous review. In the 3 plus years that my mom and I have been coming to St. James we have always had an amazing experience. We've only had one snafu and it happened in April. We are members of a church organization and wanted to have an outing with our group. Initially we had reserved for a group of ten but had some last minute add-ons to the group. So we asked if possibly we could be accommodated for 12. Unfortunately there was a miss communication and I awaited a call to say if they would be able to accommodate. Unfortunately we were unable to accommodate the last two people so myself and my mom decided to let the ladies experience St. James. Through phone conversations we tried to make a reservation for later that afternoon incase they had a cancellation. We were told we would be contacted if there was one. Normally it wouldn't have been an issue but we go every month in honor of my Grandma, so it has special meaning. Fortunately they were able to accommodate us at the 4pm teatime. Which we were very grateful for. I would also like to thank Kim for very generously comping one of our teas. As always tea was amazing. I also celebrated my birthday at St. James as I have done for the past three years. I enjoy the regalness that is the Royal May Tea. I absolutely love this tea menu! They made my birthday memorable as always. Also huge thank you to Mary our awesome tea hostess with the mostess!!! She is always an awesome addition to our teatime. I have been here two times and I have to say I was pretty disappointed in my most recent reservation. I took my mother out for teatime and we chose to sit outside. I called ahead of time to see what the accomodations were with the heat. I was told there would be misters and fans, which I was ok with. When we arrive we were sat outside of the normal outside dining area without misters or a fan in 100 degree heat. We were also often forgotten about because we were segregated from everyone else. I also noticed there was an unused table in the normal outside area where we could have been seated. We requested water near the start of the service and had to ask for it a second time before it was brought out after waiting about 30 mins. We were forgotten about again when it was time to switch out the teas twice and also when we were to receive out lavender towels. With the amount we spent on service and buying teas from the gift shop I would have expected a better service. I hope that this was a one time experience and will try the tea room one more time before deciding whether or not we will come back. read more

With all the hype surrounding this place, I was so excited to celebrate the month of february for their valentine's day special. We made the online reservation to their special valentine's day tea. I believe it was $52 per person, so we spent over $100 for two people. It's really steep but that's because it's one of their special events. With the $52 you get a small private room, three tiers with various types of food, and three different types of tea. I do understand that tearooms are expensive, and we come there for three things: atmosphere, tea, and delicious pastries/sandwiches/food. The only reason why I'm giving this place three stars and not 2 stars is because the atmosphere was nice given the small private room and we liked the tea. This tea room however, completely failed at serving good food. I'm not saying the food was inedible, it was simply mediocre and didn't leave us wanting more of their food. I don't think the event is worth $52 because I can have just as much of a great time not being in a private room, enjoy better food, and spend less money. The scones tasted like KFC biscuits. The macaron wasn't good. The piece of veggie leaf that had some kind of cheese on it tasted really weird and the veggie was old and shriveled. Biting into the pink heart was like biting into a rock. The red heart was like any other sugar cookie you can buy at walmart. I just didn't like the food they served on February for their valentine's day special. I do love going to tea rooms so we might give this place another try. We probably won't be doing their special events but maybe the regular afternoon tea. Last year we held my bridal shower there and it was a truely incredible experience! They change their menu every month, generally refelcting a theme appropriate to current events of the particular time of year, like their Queen's Jubilee menu last year, or their Prince George menu recently. Tea is always served in three courses with a tea paired with each course, savories, breads, and desserts. Generally, I'm just eating my way up to get the the desserts which are always wonderful! This is an amazing attraction in the North Valley that anyone visiting Albuquerque should experience. The themes of the "tea party" are unique and well done. When I went, the tea party's theme was Alice and wonderland. The decor and food corresponded perfectly with this theme. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing.
