We ordered 2 Old Fashioned Burgers and 1 Full Chicken Nuggets Plate with French fries. We all drank water. Our burgers were delicious. They were cooked perfectly and with all of the toppings on the side. My son didn't care for the chicken nuggets and barely ate them. Not good! Came down to the stockyards and wanted to grab a bite before walking around. Came to the star cafe for brunch. First of all, the bunch menu is 5 items, no real options. I orders the star plate, which is two eggs. Bacon or sausage, home fries and toast or biscuit. The eggs were ordered over medium but were easy. The potatoes overcooked, the biscuit wasn't cooked through and still doughy, and bacon limp. The coffee was equally disappointing. She orders the waffles, which were room temp when they arrived. Not sure how you mess up such a simple order based on this small menu but they accomplished it. The ambiance is a bar, not cafe. It's probably 120 years old, run down and beat up. We are happy that we went up the street because the food, drinks, and service were so good at The Star Cafe. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned so well. The BLT had so much bacon! We stopped in here for a drink and snack whilst we were exploring the Stockyards area. We sat at the bar and ordered a beer for my partner and I had the TX Peaches. The cocktail was nice but it was a little too sweet for me (personal preference more than there being anything wrong with the drink). We ordered a chicken fried chicken sandwich to share. The food arrived quickly and the sandwich was delicious! We both agreed it was probably the best fried chicken sandwich either of us had ever had. The chicken was juicy and the batter had so much flavour. The fries were tasty but could have been cooked for a little bit longer. Also want to shout out our bartender (whose name I didn't get so very sorry). He was so friendly and was giving us lots of recommendations for things to do in the area. The reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the bathroom situation. The ladies room was not very nice and you aren't able to put toilet paper in the toilet itself (there is a sign specifically saying this) and I found the whole experience a bit unpleasant. I understand their piping is old but having to put your used toilet paper into a bin (where other people have also put their used paper) was just not nice. Our total bill, including tax and tip, was $45 which we thought was great value. I would definitely visit again (although not if I need to use a bathroom haha). read more

2nd time to visit the stockyards. Originally came here to eat at another restaurant that was showing they had fried bologna sandwiches.....unfortunately they had "gone out of business". As we walked by the star cafe a couple was coming out and we inquired if it was any good? They responded it's delicious. They weren't wrong! We started off with the fried pickles. YUM! Visited this evening for some dinner with two family members, none of us have been here before so we thought we'd give it a try! When we arrived a gentleman was sat by the door outside, asked how many, went inside (of the nearly empty restaurant) to let the host know how many. Odd practice but that's none of my business. We sit down, order (1 steak and baked potato, one steak and mashed potatoes, and one country fried steak with mashed potatoes). I head to the restroom and wait in line, as someone was in the women's room, and when they come out it's one of the servers still wearing her servers apron.....in the bathroom. I've served at several establishments in different states and never has that been a normal practice. Anyway, we get our salads they were all pretty good for a salad that's included in your meal. I finished mine with ranch. We all receive our plates the roll is mediocre, my fried steak was good but the breading just fell right off, and the mashed potatoes were sub par. As for, the baked potatoes with the steak, the one who got it said it tasted old. As they have worked in restaurants for years they have a taste for that and would know the difference between a fresh/good baked potato and an old one. But I will say the service was good, our water cups remained filled and they were very polite. Too bad the food and hygiene practices weren't matched. read more

The servers were all very friendly and nice. They were attentive as well. The chili had a nice flavor but temperature wise maybe like it was just heated to like warm? Kind of reminded me of hormel maybe. But it was good. The burgers were both very good. Bacon was flavorful. Buns were toasted. The fries were fresh cut and tasty. Fried pickles were good as well. We placed our name on the wait list; it was a Thursday evening. We finally got seated. We knew it was going to be slow and we were right. We were served our appetizers relatively timely but our meal took sooooo long. It took over an hour from the time we sat down to finally getting our meal. The real clincher for the one star rating. How can two steaks (with one being a $40 cut of meat) be cooked well done when we asked for medium rare? This is Texas; well done steaks are unheard of, especially when you're in the Stockyards area. The waitress didn't seem to care and gave us some attitude when we pointed out the steaks. She informed us they had one cook working that night. Whether that's true or not is unclear but what was clear was that our steaks were very overcooked. And the waitress had the nerve to bring our salads to us after our meals were finally served. She asked us if we still wanted them cause "some people don't want them after their food arrives." Hell yeah we want our salads. We're paying for them since they're part of the meal. Seems like that was their ploy for cost savings - serve the salad after the meal is served. She did the same thing to the customers sitting behind us. Chicken fried steak was top notch, really, most things on the menu were. Can't really say that anymore! Menu has changed, and everything is pricier. Ordered our usual chicken fried steak... no salt. No kind of flavor, of anything. Although crispy on the outside the meat itself could have been passed as tasteless cardboard. Chicken fried steak is thicker and smaller than the previous portions too. Mashed potatoes were definitely from a box and the collard greens which are supposed to be flavorful, were not. The Star Cafe should be ashamed to serve steak in the Stock Yard. If you want to wait over an hour for shady service and over cooked steaks, you've come to the right place. After ordering, we waited over an hour for our food. We were surprised that our steaks were brought out before the salads. When we asked about the salads, our waiter said she didn't bring out the salads because she assumed we didn't want them anymore. We overheard this same salad question at the table next to us. It seems like a shady business practice to cut costs by trying not to serve what's supposed to be included with your entree. The worst part of our meal was when we found all of our steaks cooked well done when they were all ordered medium rare. Our waiter said the steaks would be comped, and our receipt still had the steaks shown. They did take 10% off, but truthfully, you couldn't pay me to eat a steak like that again, much less wait an hour to get seated, and then another hour to wait for food. It was an awful experience that I hope others who enjoy their steak to avoid. I want to support small businesses, but this place will not earn my business again. read more

When we arrived they checked our temperature and sat us at tables that were socially distanced. Our server was attentive and friendly he brought our drinks and salads that came with our meal out promptly. The salad was nice and fresh and a good size. Both myself and my husband had the chicken fried steak as recommended and it was great. The biscuit was soft and fluffy and the mash potatoes and gravy were creamy and delicious. We were on Northside today and hunger pains began to persist so we stopped by The Star Cafe. The sign on this classic diner says the place has been going strong for over 30 years. It's packed it the rafters with memorabilia and "Cowtown" charm. And as for the food, it's exactly what one would expect ( and want) from a little cafe, good hearty comfort food.
