I've been coming here for years. The poutine is always amazing and all the other appetizers. My go to is the spicy fried chicken sandwich and my fiancés is the meatballs with extra bread cause they don't give enough. I could've sworn I had the smash burger here before but when I ordered it this time I was a little confused. There was nothing smash about these patties as they were much more than a quarter inch thick. The onions and bacon on it were delicious, but then I asked for extra 1000 island. There were no pickle chunks in it and was more of just mayo and ketchup with some paprika. Also, the onion rings were heavily breaded so if you're into that, cool. My fiancé got the spinach artichoke grilled cheese with chicken and while delicious, very messy and hard to eat. It comes with potato chips and they aren't cooked evenly in my opinion. This is a trendy restaurant located in the outdoor mall. We found parking on a Sunday afternoon on the street. There is metered parking right in front! Walking in you will see this place is popular and trendy. The host promptly greeted and seated us. We were told we had a 90 min timer to eat. Our server took our order without writing anything down which always makes me feel like it's a fancy restaurant. However, something happened and we never received our third meal. It was three of us. The server said she put in the order but the kitchen didn't see it so she rushed the meal. It came out shortly after she rushed it. So this is something happens at restaurants and the server and kitchen corrected it and took it off our bill. What more could we ask for? We can't ask for perfection but only to appropriately fix mistakes when they are made. Also, my salad had the wrong dressing but it was good dressing at least so I didn't send it back. Turns out not writing down didn't work for our server. The prices are about $15-$20 per meal and $15 per drink. There are a couple of TVs to watch sports but with a time limit, you can't watch a whole football game here. Also two of the women toilets were broken and only one worked. The burgers we had were good and very juicy. The poutine fries were soft and cheesy. Overall the food was very good. I had a bourbon basil lemonade which was very well made. The holiday special drink was also great! Four stars for very cute ambiance/decor with a trendy vibe, excellent food, okay service besides the mix up, very well made drinks, decent priced food, and tv for sports. However, the 90 min time limit makes this place feel unwelcoming and I would prefer a place with no limit especially if I'm spending $50-$60 per person for appetizers, food and drinks. I would rather take my money somewhere else where I am welcome to relax as long as I want. I was catching up with a good friend so I didn't want to feel rushed. I'd never been to this restaurant before but came in after a team building escape room event nearby. I usually drink vodka, water and mio water flavor but I didn't have it with me so I was at a loss of what to drink. Our server Felicia suggested the girl next door. It was AMAZING, just the right amount of sweetness. She was very knowledgeable about the drinks and was really nice and attentive. We had a group of 13 with a 5:30 reservation after a scheduled rehearsal. The rehearsal ended early putting us an hour ahead of schedule, arriving at 4:30. We informed the staff and were told as soon as the group at the large table were done, we could be seated. At 5, the group left. Mind you, it's not that busy in the establishment at this time. It's now 5:05, 5:10, 5:15 and no movement on seating us; just an empty table with hosts and hostesses circling. That table sat empty and we were finally seated at 5:30. As we were, informing us there was a 2 hour limit. We all thought, with such poor service we'll never get out in 2 hours. The poor service continued, taking 15 minutes to take a drink order and another to deliver and take our food order. My partner and I patronized The State during a recent weeknight. I recommend this establishment with slight reservations. When The state isn't overwhelmed with customers they provide some of the best food at Victoria Gardens. In the past I have ordered sandwiches, and burgers. On this night I ordered the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. The salad is thoughtfully prepared. While typically restaurants overcharge for bagged salad, the State offers fresh, unchopped, romaine leaves. The dressing is creamy and, typically, it is an entree sized offering. (And, if you prefer a traditional serving, you may ask them to chop your lettuce into strips.) What prevents The State from earning higher praise is their service. More often than not we see our servers 3 times: to take our order, to take the bill, and to check on us after we've received our food. That means that you have to grab different servers if you need a refill, or ketchup, or if you drop a napkin, or if you wish to order a desert or other fair. It is not uncommon for us to wait 20 minutes before we receive the bill. At times, after a prolonged wait, we've had to hunt down servers to receive the bill. In sum, The State offers good food, but provides inconsistent service. read more

We waited at the bar for our table. There were several open, but obviously staffing was an issue. We were seated shortly after. We sat unattended for about 10 minutes. A woman came by with waters for the table next to us, and noticed us. She warmly greeted me and asked me if I needed something. I told her that we would like to order, but had been here a while without any attention. She immediately jumped in and took our orders. I asked her if staffing was an issue, because look, it seems these days people are not willing to work. She said yes, a "few" servers failed to report to their shifts. Rosa did everything she could to make it seem like we mattered. She took our order and delivered to us so quickly. The waffles were delicious. The artichoke grilled cheese was mouth watering. Fries were perfect and food all came out piping hot. Service is on point! She kept asking us if we needed anything and was so pleasant. I thanked her for her kindness and care and told her we were so happy with her willingness to work hard to cover the restaurants shortage. What a gem she is and should be acknowledged. This review is only reflective of the host. Mother's day for dinner we had a reservation for 5:30pm and we checked in via text as we were on the way and we arrived around 5:50. Now, typically there is about a 15 min grace period at most restaurants and while I understand that it is a major holiday and it may be different, (and we were late) it was the way the situation was handled that was upsetting. We were told we can either find our own spot in the bar area and bring our stroller to a high top or wait. After scoping out the bar area we figured it wasn't suitable for our situation so we advised her we'd be willing to wait, again understanding we were late. The host then proceeded to advise my partner she couldn't even take our name down yet due to being overbooked. My partner then took it upon himself to check Open Table and they had a reservation open for 7:00pm, which he took then refreshed and there was one for 6:15pm, which at this point it was around 6:05pm, weird considering we were advised they were overbooked. She then advised we would be next to be sat (there were now a lot of open tables and absolutely nobody waiting) but since our one year old wasn't included in the reservation she could not give us a high chair. I guess fair, (?) we had the stroller he could sit in anyways and truthfully it's what I wanted to eat so yes, we chose to stay and were taken to our table. Upon being sat our server approached us and I had to ask for a kid's menu because said host didn't provide one, nor was our son given the kids fruit starter they typically bring out, unless again that wasn't done for mother's day. We came here for dinner thought we would try something new. Looked up the menu and it seemed really good. I set up reservations using the open table app and asked for a booth since it was a anniversary dinner. (Yes I put that down on the reservation for a booth and it was our anniversary). We arrived ahead of time and they had my reservation and we were seated in what they call a community table. Right in the front by the door there was another person there who didn't look to happy we were sitting there. When I asked if there was another option for seating. I was told no because everything else was booked. I did see the other seating options that were empty and then later got filled but by the time we were wrapping up. Our server who was very nice, greeted us and took our order. When our appetizers fried oysters came I asked for silverware. After a while the server came back saying they only had one fork and gave us some plastic forks with the one fork. He said the dishwasher was broken and they had no silverware. We were patient thinking maybe it was temporary but never got silverware. The oysters were good and had a decent flavor. Our food came out good thing we were sharing because we had to eat out meal with one fork. We had the pork chops and shrimp Mac and cheese. The Mac and chesse had a good taste but it seems some part were way over seasoned than other sides of the dish. The pork chop were cooked well and the habanero jam gave it a good taste and small kick but not really spicy. Our server was nice but hardly saw him, it took a long time to see him to ask for a refill, or our bill. The whole time we are having dinner people waiting for their seat are just sitting there taking loud, it got crowded and hard to enjoy a quiet anniversary dinner. Well with all that you would think that would be the worse of it but I was wrong. Later that evening, I got so sick from the food let's just say it's been 3 days and I still feel bad. My wife also got sick and if you asking how do I know it was The State and not somewhere else. My wife and I hadn't seen each other all day and that was the only place her and I ate together. Since we both got sick sharing the appetizer and main dish not hard to see where it was coming from. Not sure if because the dishwasher was broken and things were not properly washed or sanitized or the food wasn't cleaned but something from that kitchen got us sick and I have to think maybe others did that same day. So if you were there on Saturday the 5th and got sick you weren't alone. Very bad experience and not the way I would have liked to spent our anniversary. read more

The food is great. Service is perfect. We really enjoyed everything about our experience here. The State also has a "secret" speakeasy as well. This was so fun. You have to read and agree to the rules before you can enter. They make you sign that you will follow the rules. Then they take your back to the "employees only" area and you go into a secret area. In this area, there are only drinks and appetizers available. If you want entrees you have to go to the main restaurant. I love that they have a vegan friendly entree and appetizer. The vegan pasta was really good! It did have a kick to it, and was a little on the spicy side for my white self. But it probably wouldn't be spicy for other people.
