This is a trendy restaurant located in the outdoor mall. We found parking on a Sunday afternoon on the street. There is metered parking right in front! Walking in you will see this place is popular and trendy. The host promptly greeted and seated us. We were told we had a 90 min timer to eat. Our server took our order without writing anything down which always makes me feel like it's a fancy restaurant. However, something happened and we never received our third meal. It was three of us. The server said she put in the order but the kitchen didn't see it so she rushed the meal. It came out shortly after she rushed it. So this is something happens at restaurants and the server and kitchen corrected it and took it off our bill. What more could we ask for? We can't ask for perfection but only to appropriately fix mistakes when they are made. Also, my salad had the wrong dressing but it was good dressing at least so I didn't send it back. Turns out not writing down didn't work for our server. The prices are about $15-$20 per meal and $15 per drink. There are a couple of TVs to watch sports but with a time limit, you can't watch a whole football game here. Also two of the women toilets were broken and only one worked. The burgers we had were good and very juicy. The poutine fries were soft and cheesy. Overall the food was very good. I had a bourbon basil lemonade which was very well made. The holiday special drink was also great! Four stars for very cute ambiance/decor with a trendy vibe, excellent food, okay service besides the mix up, very well made drinks, decent priced food, and tv for sports. However, the 90 min time limit makes this place feel unwelcoming and I would prefer a place with no limit especially if I'm spending $50-$60 per person for appetizers, food and drinks. I would rather take my money somewhere else where I am welcome to relax as long as I want. I was catching up with a good friend so I didn't want to feel rushed. Good food but that would be my reason for avoiding this place and finding another spot. If that doesn't bother you then have fun! read more

The bad: Our waitress, Serenity, really seemed like she didn't enjoy her job. She was rude and had poor customer service. Maybe she needs a couple days off to rest in after a long weekend or find a career her talents would be better suited in because this is not it if that's how she treats guests. Also I've never been in an establishment where they start putting chairs up while guests are still eating!!!! This was extremely unconventional and bizarre to see. The State offers the best customer service & the servers are friendly and reliable. The food was delicious! We got the shrimp tacos and lobster mac n cheese! Both are extremely delicious. It's important to note that you can add on more tacos, but you cannot subtract any from your order. The ambiance was super satisfying as everyone seems laid back and having a good time. We came here for dinner thought we would try something new. Looked up the menu and it seemed really good. I set up reservations using the open table app and asked for a booth since it was a anniversary dinner. (Yes I put that down on the reservation for a booth and it was our anniversary). We arrived ahead of time and they had my reservation and we were seated in what they call a community table. Right in the front by the door there was another person there who didn't look to happy we were sitting there. When I asked if there was another option for seating. I was told no because everything else was booked. I did see the other seating options that were empty and then later got filled but by the time we were wrapping up. Our server who was very nice, greeted us and took our order. When our appetizers fried oysters came I asked for silverware. After a while the server came back saying they only had one fork and gave us some plastic forks with the one fork. He said the dishwasher was broken and they had no silverware. We were patient thinking maybe it was temporary but never got silverware. The oysters were good and had a decent flavor. Our food came out good thing we were sharing because we had to eat out meal with one fork. We had the pork chops and shrimp Mac and cheese. The Mac and chesse had a good taste but it seems some part were way over seasoned than other sides of the dish. The pork chop were cooked well and the habanero jam gave it a good taste and small kick but not really spicy. Our server was nice but hardly saw him, it took a long time to see him to ask for a refill, or our bill. The whole time we are having dinner people waiting for their seat are just sitting there taking loud, it got crowded and hard to enjoy a quiet anniversary dinner. Well with all that you would think that would be the worse of it but I was wrong. Later that evening, I got so sick from the food let's just say it's been 3 days and I still feel bad. My wife also got sick and if you asking how do I know it was The State and not somewhere else. My wife and I hadn't seen each other all day and that was the only place her and I ate together. Since we both got sick sharing the appetizer and main dish not hard to see where it was coming from. Not sure if because the dishwasher was broken and things were not properly washed or sanitized or the food wasn't cleaned but something from that kitchen got us sick and I have to think maybe others did that same day. So if you were there on Saturday the 5th and got sick you weren't alone. Very bad experience and not the way I would have liked to spent our anniversary. read more

We are long time fans of The State, and have had some delicious food there. Recently, the last two times the food hasn't been as good. The poutine was almost all cheese with very little fries. This is a great restaurant. It's in Victoria Gardens, close to all the shops, other restaurants and parking. They have a cute speakeasy that is great for dates & socializing with friends. I left feeling ripped off after ordering their $25 Dahlia margarita. I had high expectations in terms of presentation and taste. My first thought when I received it was literally "WTF". We looked up all their "exclusive" ingredients thinking they probably used high end Tequila. Nope! $30 bottle of tequila and margarita mix was pretty much what made up this "exclusive" drink. We ate here for my aunts birthday and at the start there was 5 different servers that came to us and took our drink and food orders. And then waited 1 hour for the food to come out and as we had our food my step dad order the shrimp tacos which are small, took an additional 15 minutes longer due to them putting pico on them then had to take it off. Then my bother ordered the steak with 2 sides only came out with one side we asked about the other side and it took 40 minutes longer to bring his second side out. And we respectfully asked to take off the shrimp tacos due to the inconvenience of time. Management argued and insinuated the policy over and over again about why they can't take the tacos off and continued to escalate the issue other than de-escalating the situation causing my aunts birthday to be absolutely horrible! My friend and I met for lunch on a Monday. We love how the front walls open up so it's almost like you're sitting outside. It's definitely a cool hangout spot for drinks and food. Service was good and the food was fresh. We both ordered the spinach artichoke grilled cheese but I got mine with a side Caesar. I loved my grilled Caesar salad. It had a unique twist being grilled and I enjoyed the dressing. The sandwich was good but I could have used a lot more cheese in mine. I actually was questioning if there was any cheese included. This is one of the nicer sit down restaurants at Victoria gardens. It has this old timey bar vibes with dark moody lighting. It was super busy when we got there. We put our names down for 2 people, and they said wait times would be about an hour. They texted in about 30 minute saying they had our table ready outside. I was hesitant at first as it was extremely cold, but as soon as we walked into their patio section their heaters were on and it was nice and warm. I asked our waitress for a drink recommendation, and she recommended the forbidden fruit drink which was delicious. Both mine and our friends drinks were super strong which was great for the price. The poutine is delicious, it's the best I've had. I'd go back again just to order that as my entree. The cheese was nice and toasted at the top and it was the perfect portion for two people. 8/10 For my entree I ordered their classic state burger which has this amazing buttery croissant bun. I've never had anything similar which made this burger a stand out. I would also rate this 8/10. The side salad with their house vinaigrette was also delicious. It was described as a side salad topped with almonds, but my serving only came with 2. It didn't make any difference, it was delicious regardless. It was just something funny I took note of. Our server was extremely attentive and walked by multiple times for refills. She never kept us waiting more than a few minutes for any service. This might be my new go to spot at Victoria Gardens. For reference, we came in at around 8pm on the weekend before Valentine's Day without a reservation. I'm not sure how busy they are other weekends. Gave this a 2nd try... chicken n waffles again. Also tried the avocado toast ( not a fan of the garlic apoli, too overpowering on it) I would want to come back for brunch, but they need better service. I don't appreciate a place where you need to keep pulling people to help you. I feel like the prices are really good, that's why i came back. It would be nice to have your water refilled without having to ask every time. That is really annoying. I ordered fries and never got them.. i had to ask for water more than twice, we had to ask for more beer for my table, bad, bad service. This happened last weekend, too, but my girlfriend was the one that kept bugging other waiters, i was hoping bad swevice was a one-time thing.. i guess it's not. The hostess said that the booths were for some reservations coming up. I'll start by clarifying the food was pretty good, but the issue for the stars deduction was the lack of service we got. I'm usually not picky with service esp if it's busy bc I get it, it's a little hard to keep up, but the experience with service my partner and I had was almost abysmal. We came in around nearly 2PM on a Sunday and it was still pretty popular. Hostess asked if we had a reservation and we said no, and the hostess said we could either be seated on the patio or at the bar. We settled for the bar area since it was pretty hot out. Was told to seat ourselves, but while we sat down, no one paid us any attention. No one gave us any menus or checked in on us or offered water, and it took so long to wave someone down just to get the menu. Finally we got the menu and we noticed a few open seats and tried to wave someone down again and asked if we could switch from the bar seating to the table. The server said she'll check and then never got back to us and we sat there, ignored for some time before another server came to check in on us. I watched as other servers circled around to the other tables and check in on them while it was crickets at our area. Food came out and it was solid! I got the steak which was well seasoned with a nice crust. My partner got the bacon burger and onion rings which they said was pretty good. No one really checked in on us while we were eating but I didn't mind that part too much since we didn't need anything, but when it was time for us to get the check, it took so long for us to be able to even wave someone down. Overall the food was great but the lack of service and attention made me feel unwelcome and ignored. It was a bit surprising considering how many reviews talk about attentive service, yet I didn't experience it at all. It's a 3.5 stars experience for me but I felt like it should be rounded down rather than up since I didn't feel comfortable at all when dining. Maybe I'll give the State a chance again in the future with a reservation, but I think regardless if you have a reservation or not, the service shouldn't be this bad. Everything about The State is superb. This is an upscale restaurant, so if you ghetto- keep yo self at home. Lol The State is very nice and fancy. Adorable, glitzy decor. Comfortable seating. The food is great. Service is perfect. We really enjoyed everything about our experience here. The State also has a "secret" speakeasy as well. This was so fun. You have to read and agree to the rules before you can enter. They make you sign that you will follow the rules. Then they take your back to the "employees only" area and you go into a secret area. In this area, there are only drinks and appetizers available. If you want entrees you have to go to the main restaurant. I love that they have a vegan friendly entree and appetizer. The vegan pasta was really good! It did have a kick to it, and was a little on the spicy side for my white self. But it probably wouldn't be spicy for other people.
