Was there early tonight, slow not many people where at the place. We were seated at bar table. We were given drink menu and then after about 5 minutes looked around nobody doing anything in fact the bartender was stacking wine corks as a game not paying any attention to anyone. Finally from the back of the bar the younger male bartender asked what we wanted, he would not even come out from behind the bar. He did not seem like he wanted to be there AT ALL and we had to pay for that. Drinks came in traditional size martini glasses as opposed to the new size (larger) that most serve in. I don't mind the classic size however they were not close to being full so the based on price and poor service (obviously he did not want to be there) I would not recommend this place. read more

I find it interesting how people give this place bad reviews. I suppose some individuals naturally have a negative disposition? I was at the Stave last night and I must say, it was a fulfilling experience. The first thing that caught my eye when I walked in was the layout. It feels like they spent a little extra on materials and overall decor. Once I sat down at the bar with my date, the bartender, Dexter, came over and inquired about our tastes for the night. I let him know I was leaning towards a wine and he brought over 2 different bottles of Cab and let me sample each. Both were delicious so it was easy to choose. The night progressed seamlessly thanks to the relaxed and comfortable ambience. Service remained pleasantly consistent and at one point, one of the managing partners, Natalie, came over and began talking to us about the bar and its vision. It was an enlightening conversation, helped by the fact that she was genuinely interested in our company and perspectives. We talked about her experiences as a businesswoman and about the bar's direction. Let me tell you, they're on to something...something good. The Stave is a diamond in the rough considering the somewhat sketchy clientele and atmosphere on Pine St. weekend nights. Overall, this place is not about being "happening", it's about quality, from its beer and wine selection, to its service. It definitely helps that when coming up with the formula for the bar, Natalie and friends left out the drop of pretentiousness. Walk in and ask for Dexter or even Natalie and simply ask "How are you?" Trust me, they'll make you feel right at home. I will definitely be back to the Stave soon! read more

Straight out of an AMEX Commercial. Crowd on a Wednesday night were all late 30s to 50s. Drink menu is very beer and whiskey centric. If you and your group like those two, you'll be golden. Want diversity? Go elsewhere. We ordered a couple of cocktails from the menu (Lemon Drop Martini for my friend and a Chet Baker for me). My drink came out as an Old Fashioned (bartender fixed the mistake). Her's came out as the WORST Lemon Drop I've ever tasted (mind you, I used to be a craft cocktail bartender). Absolutely loved this place! Came on a Friday night for drinks with some friends and was pleasantly surprised. It is located in a prime spot and the atmosphere is very welcoming. Their style is very old fashioned and classic, which I love. The furniture, stem wear and decor are very tasteful without being over the top. The music was quite nice as well. They have lovely spacious patio with fire pits. They have a sophisticated menu; don't come in here looking to do gummy bear shots and order cosmos for all of your girlfriends. A gentleman made some very nice conversation with me and it turns out he was one of the owners. I could tell their goal is to provide a nice, comfortable space where anyone can enjoy a drink. The staff was also very polite and prompt. Try the Moscow Mule, it is amazing. Served in a copper mug, it is perfectly balanced. I will definitely be coming here again. read more

I have to give props to places that improve, and I think Stave is one of them. Came back in recently for a later-night drink. I was actually pleasantly surprised. There was a decent crowd of people inside but not stuffed. Some of the improvements since my first review? - Beefed up food menu that also includes food from Michael's Pizzeria (which is delicious) - Expanded drink menu that now includes specialty whiskeys, signature cocktails, while still keeping a decent wine and beer list. I tried their "Old Fashioned" which was actually super smooth, and they had some interesting Whiskey's and Tequilas on the menu. The server, unfortunately, was not as versed on the menu as she could have been. I think the specialty whiskeys help differentiate the Stave from Congregation, District Wine and the other places that have similar offerings. The ambience is great and for a pre-meal apero or after dinner cocktail, I would come back to the Stave. I do hope they upgraded their charcuterie platters and then they would be awesome in my book. read more

MADE ME SICK So I drove down to long beach go meet a friend for dinner or something small to eat. We walked around a bit looking for something but everything just seemed unreasonable. We finally came across The Stave which looked like a cool whiskey place and I'm a whiskey guy so what the heck and they had some small plate stuff. To make it short, we order a cheese plate and the spinach artichoke dip with jalapeño. The artichoke dip came out and I was immediately concerned as they dip spilled out the side of the glass dish. It was obviously microwaved minutes before. We were hungry so we started to eat it, the dip was maybe luke warm to say the least, mostly cold. I immediately started to feel uncomfortable. The cheese and meat platter that we ordered came out after. The platter was fine except the description on the menu didn't really coincide with the cheese that we received so it was even questionable if we got what we ordered. Now my friend is a big cheese guy and explained that the platter itself wasn't even set up correctly as a cheese platter should be. I told him in sure the guy in the back hasn't a clue about how to get it up cause it sure didn't look like it. By this point my stomach is just feeling horrible, I told my friend I had to leave cause I'm feeling really sick, I started sweating and getting a migraine, I had to drive another 25 minutes back to Hermosa and immediately was over the toilet throwing up.....puked my guts out. I am in love with this place. They've been open for abouth 3 months I believe. They have the cleanest restrooms I have ever soon, everything is newly remodeled and the location is perfection. The wine bar itself is gorgeous. Staff is knowledgeable and very sweet, cheese was delicious, wine was fantastic and a wonderful beer selection. The two outdoor fireplaces are beautiful and keeps you warm on a cold night. I've been here a handful of times, a great place to watch the game with a few friends (I'd recommend that big groups sit outside) or with your S/O on date night. I've been here twice and on the first occasion just had two of beers after a long day. If i had reviewed The Stave Bar then it would have received a much better rating. Don't get me wrong. This is a nice corner bar with outside seating and a comfortable interior. No complaints about the service. BUT, the last time I was here, walked out with a bill of $56 for two drinks; was a little confused and slightly annoyed (not from the alcohol, BTW). I'm not one to skimp on good food or drinks but this was a little much. I had two (2) double-neat Highland Park 12yr Scotch during the 2.5 hours I was there. Happy Hour? Came here last night for the Grand Opening... The interior is sleek minimal, a little expected, but I love the marble slat tables and ebony colored bar stools. Wine selection is excellent. As someone who has spent her entire life living wining an dining in the LBC I can attest that you will not find these wines at any other Long Beach joint. The Staff - Waitresses were nice girls eager to offer wine suggestions. My favorite waitress was the blond in the animal print top- she was very personable. The manager however, tall stocky brunette was abrupt and left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. My suggestions for The Stave- 1. Learn your market/ surrounding pop. (Most LB businesses don't) 2. Customer Service and being appreciative go a looong way! (Ask your neighbor George about that) 3. Offer something unique to the area (Live performance of string instruments would add to the ambience (Quetzal Guerrero) and definitely wine tastings) I've watched many come and go... Went here the other night for my FI's birthday. Pros: -The Jukebox! 3 songs for $1, we were all picking songs all night. -The decor: dark and cozy atmosphere, tin ceiling, comfy chairs, and their bathrooms are spotless. -The vibe: All different types of people, old, and young. Everyone is polite and there to just hang out with their friends. No douchebags, yay! Cons: -Inconsistent drinks. My friend and I both got a "White Winter Old Fashioned," and his was incredibly sour, and he had more drink overall, while mine was super sugary and barely looked like 1.5oz of liquid total. Glaringly obvious discrepancy between the two. Night and day. -PRICEY. At the end of the night we had quite a large bill... so y'know, pre-game at home, come in and get maybe 2 drinks, and then go home. This place is awesome. We have been YEARNING for a whisky bar, like this, in LB. The drinks are good. Moscow Mule is served in a proper copper mug. The vodka selection is great, considering they specialize in the whisky. Apps are really good too. The cheese and salami platter is my favorite. Yup, another wine/beer bar in downtown Long Beach, right across from Congregation Ale House. It's a pretty nice one, though, with tasteful modern decor and cool outdoor fireplace bars--yes, you sit at a bar and the gas fire pit is in front of you. It's a wine bar first and foremost, so while you'll find a craft brew selection, it's not that big. My friend and I just wanted to get a drink and some snacks, and the food here is definitely on the snacky side. Charcuterie plates, nuts, etc. It's a before or after dinner kind of place so don't expect to get a full meal here. That said, we enjoyed a nice relaxing time in front of the fire chatting and snacking over our drinks. Afterwards we were still feeling a bit peckish so we walked next door to Wockano to take advantage of their late night happy hour menu. This wine bar is in a great location in downtown Long Beach right across from Wokcano. The Staves coo. They have a very expensive and rare whiskey there called Pappy Van Winkle. My rich Cambodian friend ordered it here and said it was really good. I tried a sip, but I wash't able to enjoy it too much because it was pretty loud. If I'm going to enjoy a whiskey of that magnitude, I want to do it in the comfort of my own home or maybe a more intimate bar setting. Pretty decent selection of craft beers and an even better selection of whiskeys. I ordered a Moscow Mule, which was strong and very refreshing. Problem is, when you order this drink, they hold your ID hostage until you return the cup. That's fine, and I understand but it's annoying when you're trying to get out of the place and the bar is super busy. I waited in line for 20 minutes just to return my cup and get my ID back. I probably could have cut in line and just gotten it over with, but I was drunk already and didn't want to potentially start shit with the tall, buff white folk with their backwards hats. I came here on a second occasion for a work event and ordered all the Chimay blue I wanted because it was company paid for! You know what else was company paid for? The lasagna! And it was surprisingly really delicious. Each bite was deliciously cheesy with the perfect balance of sauce, pasta and cheese. It was so good, we ordered 3 of them and all shared. Maybe it tasted so delicious because I knew it was free? Shit! Now that I think about it, I should have ordered the Pappy Van Winkle during my work event. It was late and the staff seemed too busy socializing with what looked like their friends, maybe regulars, to get our second round. Our waitress was distracted, brought me a red instead of the white one...I guess what I ordered came in both...I pointed to the red, and I get she made a mistake, but she sounded a bit condescending when I pointed out she brought the wrong one...."Well it DOES come in a red..." Then maybe she should have said that from the get go. I have been here before with another server, so maybe it was just her. Great addition to Long Beach, and a great addition to the Promenade area. The atmosphere and decor is amazing! THIS is where you want to spend your Winter (and Summer) nights. The heat lamps and firepits in the center of the tables are awesome! They are even in perfect view of the TVs inside. Selection of drinks is VERY diverse. No food. Yes that right. No real food. Just some very expensive platters to pair with your wine tastings. I celebrated my birthday here this past weekend. The owner was a joy to work with to set up the private space. When we got there, check in and setting into the space was so easy. Everyone was so nice and helpful, and allowed separate checks so that made paying way easy. Drinks were tasty, especially the whiskey sours. Food wise - they have a relationship with Michael's pizza so we got pizzas from there and they deliver to Stave. Awesome time. read more

At first, I wasn't very impressed with The Stave. The waitresses did not know the menu at all. We had to educate them a bit on the wine list actually. It's obvious they don't do much training there. At that point in time, I would have given this place 2 stars - 1 for the nice atmosphere and 1 for a decent beer list. I returned over this past weekend because I heard they now serve cocktails - which they do. The cocktails are really good. They did a good job on the cocktail menu, and it seemed like the waitresses we had, knew a lot more about the menu than before. I think this place is getting better with time. Although I would recommend that if they are positioning themselves as a whiskey / bourbon / scotch kinda bar, that you start offering summery drinks like a mint julep ;-) read more

Good whisky selection and atmosphere! The bartender was very knowledgeable and when I asked to try something new he was visibly excited to make a selection for me and picked the perfect drink based on my usual. On a Saturday the indoor seating was a little noisy for a non-shouting conversation, so I annexed to the patio and was quite content. As a bonus, their seating has a view of the promenade and the people watching was SPLENDID. While all of these things were lovely, what really will bring me back to the establishment is their beef jerky. Yes. I said jerky. There are a few tv's to watch a game without the loud sports fanatic screaming. The drinks are great. On another Long Beach adventure with my sister, we stumbled upon this bar. She, a LB local, had already been there before, but this was my first time. I would have to say that i enjoyed it. Specifically, i enjoyed my drink and the fact that they have a juke box. You walk in and there are two options, left or right. I really liked the table layout and there was a lot of seating space available and it was a Saturday night! First thing was first, the music. The juke box was an odd mixture of old school rock and random soul albums and 2 Bob Marley albums. So i naturally picked one of each. As for the drink, there were too many to pick from, their drink menu is huge! So my sister ordered me a Irish Mule. I've never had an Irish Mule but it is now a favorite. Jameson and ginger beer. As a big fan of Jameson, i was suspicious about mixing it, but it was delicious! It was refreshing but also was true to fine whiskey. it was 12 bucks, steep for my wallet but to have as a treat to myself every once in a while. I recommend this place for a nice whiskey/bourbon or any of their other fine cocktails. Enjoy! read more

I like this place. It's just slightly more expensive than Congregation so of course, it's just slightly less crowded. Ordering a Moscow Mule and having it served to me in the appropriate cup pleases me and my icy Siberian roots immensely. This is a nice, classy, dark, moody neighborhood bar. It would get 5 stars if it didn't have a television. And I haven't tried the munchies. But there is a good jukebox. Fits in a business district. Because it's surrounded by lofts, there are hipsters here too. All of the servers are very nice and attentive. This is strictly a wine, beer, champagne bar. Good for a date, to meet some friends before or after dinner, or to take a client. I believe you can even get one of their large tables reserved if you have a big group. Also has a nice outdoor seating area with a couple of table fire pits. No food served here. Only a small cheese plate or hummus plate. Came here on New Year's Eve intending to stay for a drink and move on. But because we were having such a nice time, we stayed here all night. When we arrived the TV was blaring. Why do establishments, that are not Sports Bars, insist on having the TV sound turned up? We did not want to hear Ryan Seacrest. I don't know anything about the beef jerky, but the drinks fall flat. I REALLY wanted to like this place because it looks so cool, but I found that the drinks aren't very good and are wildly inconsistent. My friend and I ordered a Moscow Mule and they both tasted so different. Luckily for me, mine was pretty good, but unfortunately for my friend, hers was terrible. Not sure what happened there, but I thought it might just be a fluke. Anyway, next I ordered a Paloma, and it was TERRIBLE. Granted, I know that they aren't a tequila bar, but neither is the Congregation, or the Federal Bar, or any other bar where I have ordered it and I've never had this problem. I've also never returned a drink, but this one I literally couldn't drink because it was so bad. SO bad. Needless to say, I ended up just sticking with Moscow Mules. This place was empty the first time my hubby and I walked in here, but it was during the earlier part of the day. I was shocked the place is packed by 10pm after filling up starts at around 9pm when I went here for my 2nd time with a bunch of friends. I avoid public restrooms bec people aren't clean and most establishments do not keep up on their restrooms frequently enough for my comfort, but I actually used this restroom and didn't get the heebie-jeebies. The sink had a difficult time sensing my hands but that's it. It is a really cool atmosphere and nice trendy mix in decor. I feel like they made DIY projects, lower end items, and nicer decor, mix together beautifully. I made a new friend and she is a regular here so I'll be hitting up this place every now and then. They have lots of drinking options. Probably more than most newer bars do. read more

I have passed this bar I don't know how many times and never went in till last Saturday. So I asked the bartender which wine do he recommend under the list of LIVELY of red wines. This is a cigar lovers spot to be! Great setting, always a cool crowd, and the best part...you can smoke cigars! The outdoor patio is perfect for people watching, or hanging with company. Quite possibly the best drinks in Long Beach presently. One of the only places that's getting the classics right. The Old Fashioned, Side Car, and Manhattan are all perfect. Lots of places are doing the Moscow Mules in copper mugs these days. So is The Stave. And if you ask, they'll do an Irish Mule which is the same drink with Jameson instead of vodka. Nice. The bar is great looking and comfortable. The charcuterie plates are great. You can order pizza from Michael's and they'll bring it right to you. The only improvements I can imagine would be the addition of egg whites for drinks like the Whiskey Sour, and an improved jukebox selection. Classy drinks go down better with classy music. How about some Fats Waller, Django Reinhardt, and Art Tatum? And while I recognize I'm in the minority here, I'd love to see a nice bar in Long Beach with no TV. read more

Fantastic layout at Stave, including nice bar and bar seats. You can tell they put a lot of effort and thought into the interior design here. Very comfortable. Since it's a corner spot, you have nice views of the Promenade and Broadway as you sip on a foamy Kilkenny. The outside is what comes alive, especially in this Spring as it warms up. A great area to sit outside with a burning cigar and people watch as you crack jokes with your friends. Tremendous spot, can't beat it in LB. Our bartender, Julie, was on her game.
