The Stave is a nice location, in an upcoming neighborhood. However when I enter I have to walk through the cigar patio and I was greeted with smoke. The interior was clean and new, a fairly large bar with plenty of seating elsewhere. I drove 20 miles to specifically come to this bar because I was told they did Scotch flights. When the bartender greater us and I asked about the flights and she notified me that the only do those on Wednesdays. I was obviously bummed and since the bar was empty at the time she was gracious enough to allow us to do it. I was handed two cards with a couple different predetermined flight options most options were about $20-$25 for three glasses. I was disappointed by the lack of options. The flight setup was great, the glasses were set on a large wooden disk with a handle and an eye dropper and water. After the flight I looked at the rest of the available scotches and their options were pretty limited and their prices were really high. Typically $5-$6 higher per glass than most bars I go too. Overall the service was good, and the presentation of the flights was great. But the scotch choices were limited and the prices were too high. You'd be better off going to The Blind Donkey just down the street. read more

We come here all the time because we work very close at another bar downtown. Every time I have been here I have been treated so badly by the bartenders. Blatantly told no to drinks for no reason - it was not last call and I had not been drinking prior so I was not needing to be cut off. It's disrespectful, especially to those of us who are also in the service industry. It makes me sad that if we are treated so poorly, I can imagine how regular patrons are treated. Sadly they will continue to do well because of location, but I hope you consider the manner in which you will be talked to if you come here. read more

A great place. They've got a nice beer and wine list, and a slick interior bar. i wish they had a broader menu than charcuterie plates (which I love). But as it was slow, they were cool enough to let us bring back some tacos from across the street. I LOVE this place, and here's why: 1) The drinks here are extremely well done. From the large selection of scotch and whiskey (which ranges from affordable to very classy and distinct) to the regular cocktails, this is a place where you can expect top-notch, classy drinks. 2) The outdoor section is very nice/fun: There is a large outdoor area which is right in the middle of the action at The Promenade. A lot of enjoyable scenery/people-watching from here (although the Downtown LB crowd is still kinda lame and unsocial, but that's not The Stave's fault). You can enjoy your vapes/cigars here on very nice stools and seating area, amongst very comfortable heated rocks which are also visually pleasing. 3) The inside section is equally as nice: Although I must confess I haven't sat in here (because I'm always outside with a cigar), it's good-looking, quality interior decor and atmosphere. Fun and lively but also safe and classy. 4) The vibe is safe and classy: You won't have to worry about the undesirables - wannabee thugs, angry/belligerent people looking to start a fight with someone, etc... The times I've come here, the crowd is polite, considerate and mannered. I think they could be more social and out-going, but at least they aren't anything you have to watch your back about, which is very important when you're trying to relax, forget your troubles, and enjoy time with a friend or date. 5) The music is not too loud: This is one of the biggest issues I have with a bar. Some bars play music where you can't hear yourself think. I will never understand the appeal of that. In a club it might be justifiable, if there is a large dance-floor and you're there only to dance, but in a bar you are there to talk with your friends or other patrons. If you have to hurt your throat to communicate... well that's a place I will immediately leave. The Stave has a nice volume level to where they let the patrons enjoy themselves and communicate, instead of beating them down with obnoxious music. One constructive criticism is that the servers could be more attentive. They are usually nice, but there is room for improvement here. Most times we have to wait a long while to have someone ask for an order, and we usually end-up either having to go to the bar ourselves, or track a server down (if we can find one). It would seem there is money to be made here, so why not have attractive, outgoing, eager servers to make the vibe more fun and better, while at the same time getting better tips? At any rate, I'm very grateful to have The Stave in this area, in which I am a local home-owner. read more

a great place for whiskey fans! I like this place. It's coo and has a slight more mature crowd than some of the other bars in the area. If you're a whiskey fan then this is the place. Their menu doubles as guide on the definitions of whiskey and bourbons etc. They also have a pretty good selection of Sake and beers too. We've been a few times, first time we tried a few different things, she really paid attention to what we like and gave great suggestions. My Mrs loves the Christmas in a glass, she said it tastes just like christmas lol. I'm a big fan of The Liberation. I'm sitting outside, enjoying beers with the company of about 10 people I just met at the bar. I do what I have done every time I come to this bar for the past 2 years. I enjoy a drink and at some point step outside of the premise to smoke cannabis. This has never been an issue and several bartenders know I do this and have communicated that I cannot smoke on the property. They are aware my tab is open while I leave and smoke. Tonight, one bartender sees me pull my belongings out and I proceed to tell her I am going to step off the property so that I can smoke. I do not have any cannabis open at this point. She says ok and has no issue with it. 5 minutes later (after I smoke off the property) I return to the bar and as I'm putting my belongings away another bartender comes up and tells me to put everything away (mind you I have no cannabis out at this point either - just clean utensils to smoke with). I say ok, although I disagree that what I'm doing is against any policy - everyone around me has smoking utensils out and is actively smoking with them. Nevermind that the person next to me was literally smoking a blunt. Most were smoking cigars and cigarettes. I put my belongings away and 2 minutes later the first bartender comes back and tells me she has to "check on me" to make sure I'm not smoking and have my stuff out. She said "you're good, I was just told I had to check on you." I said "if you'd rather me leave, I'll just leave." I walked over to the chase register and asked the bartender for my check. Next thing I know the bartender who came to "check on me" is following behind, only to come tell me it's not her decision to tell me that and proceeds to flash her weed leaf necklace at me (not sure what impression that was supposed to leave). I told her "I don't care about your weed necklace. I don't enjoy my time here and I want to leave. That's all!" She goes "Listen! A man should not be talking to a woman like that!" And tries to tell me to 'shut my mouth' because I'm talking too much (imagine the response if I tried to tell her to shut her mouth! Absurd...) I literally asked a different bartender at the cash register for my check, which she was actively working on, when the first bartender ran up on me to show me her cannabis necklace. You've got to be kidding me that you have to bring gender argument into this. If I don't enjoy my time somewhere, I'm going to leave. Don't chase me down and get mad at me for it. I used to love this place, but I doubt I'll be a regular here again unless they prove to be hospitable again. I'll come back and personally speak with a manager or whoever, as I don't have any beef with the employees. But this was a very unreasonable response to my legal and respectful actions. We don't have to agree, but you don't have to make it personal. I even told her it's not personal between me and anyone at the company. I understand the policy, and it's not one I agree with, so I'll leave. No need to throw a fit about it and tell me I'm talking to a woman "like that" (like what? I'm still not sure.) read more

As usual, The Stave excels on all the levels I care about. The room is like a warm blanket, the staff is comforting and the other patrons continue to be some of the most interesting people one could ever meet. Sundays with Anthony are great as he plays killer jams. Tobie and Nicole are the blondes one wish one knew in high school. For two such beautiful women, I've never experienced such big hearts. Brian is fun because, although I stick mostly to beer, he is knowledgeable about the whiskies and has very colorful descriptions of their taste, etc. and knows all the sports what's-what on the TVs above the bar. And then there's Tania, one of the first bartenders I met when I started coming to the bar. She's been nothing short of aware, efficient and, above all, good company with a great sense of humor. If you're lucky to have any of these folks or the other members of the staff at your service, you're really not lucky. It's just a great day at The Stave. read more

He then goes and takes orders and serves 3 women who came in after my buddy and me. Not sure if it was racial (we are both minorities), but he completely ignored us for 3 women and their dog. Very enjoyable laid back classy establishment. From the moment you walk in .... It is a truly impressive looking bar. They have a wide selection of specialty drinks and the table service is always very smooth and punctual. The staff are very knowledgeable about helping you choose the right drink for your personal taste. The bar back last time i was there was a class act and truly made my cousin who is a US ARMY VET a special trio of drinks as a thank you for her service... A class act. DRINKS: love love LOVE the whisky list here!! I'm a total whisky newbie but Stave has enough choices for someone like me as well as someone who's been drinking a lot of whisky for a while. I usually like to start with a cocktail or something that quenches my thirst so I had a few of their specialty cocktails and they were all very unique and interesting :) SERVICE: I guess service can be hit-or-miss. Thus the 4 stars instead of 5. First time I was at Stave, it was a week night. We easily found seats, was able to get a bartender's attention relatively quickly (I specially recall a female bartender saying 'Thanks for waiting' when taking my order even though I didn't wait too long). And drinks were served promptly. We inquired if they had a specific whisky not on the menu and I was impressed that the bartender immediately knew which one we were talking about. Side note: I was getting water for my group at the self-service water station. A fellow customer (who if I remember correctly from my drunken brain said he used to work at Stave?) helped me carry my waters to my table. Nice bartenders behind the bar and nice customers, made my day :) Second time, it was a Friday night and the place had a totally different vibe. I understand it was busy and I don't mind waiting a bit on a Friday night but it wasn't the same level of courteous service I experienced on my first visit....waited much much much longer each time I ordered anything and even longer for the bill but no "Thanks for waiting/Sorry for the wait" and when you've been in the restaurant business before those little things matter. It wasn't BAD service per say, but since I experience really good service the first time, I guess I expected a bit more. However, even this night there was a fellow customer that was super friendly and nice. They must be doing something right if they attract cool customers :) read more

I really enjoyed this place. With a cool atmosphere (half indoors, half out) and a large variety of drinks, I was definitely not disappointed. Drinks are slightly pricey, but I suppose that's to be expected in the area. You can also order pizza, which I guess they then get from a nearby pizzeria - though it didn't feel like it took a long time. We got the margherita pizza, which was decent enough. Terrible service. We visited on a Saturday night, to our surprise it was not busy at all. However, we waited at the bar for about 20 minutes and not one bartender acknowledged us. The BEST white russian I've ever had in any bar here in Long Beach, it's a simple drink but our bartender tonight, Brian, made it at an entirely different level of awesome. My few of my co-workers and I came here for a random happy hour after work. I believe it was a Monday or Tuesday, I forgot which, but around 6 PM it was super quiet. We were probably only 1 of 2 parties there, which was okay because we got our drinks right away :) Also during that time, the happy hour deals were great with well priced cocktails and appetizers. The space is medium size, with a good amount of seating inside and also outside. The place kind of has that classy, dark, and sophisticated look about it, but they were playing Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" in the background. The staff here were pretty nice, friendly and helpful! Overall, I think this was a cool spot to check out in the Downtown area. It has more of a chill, relaxes vibe compared to what you would like nearby (like on Pine). I'm sure my experience on a weekday would be somewhat different to how it is on the weekend. However I think I can find myself here again for drink whenever I'm back in the area. read more

The bar itself is beautiful, dark wood and leather booths. Great atmosphere. The wine selection here is just okay in my opinion. And the sparkling wine list is very minimal. (Only one actual choice of champagne by the bottle.) The rest is Proseccos. I would stick to beers here. They have more options when it comes to the beers. But then why go here for beers when you can go next store to Congregation which has an even BIGGER selection?! Roomies and I go here often for a draaank and it's a cool place. Located in downtown Long Beach and right across from Wockano. Great location, very cool vibe and decor inside. Staff has always one of the big reasons we come here, bartender and waitresses are always friendly and give us good pours. Outdoor area is way cool with a fire table and lots of seating. We usually post up there and can easily kill a couple hours and a couple drinks here. Whiskey selection is really deep and the bartenders know all about the different types and can help you select what's right for your taste. One complaint, food is limited to pizza delivery from the place a few doors down but it looks like they have room for a kitchen. They probably would stay more busy if they came up with a small menu. read more

Was there early tonight, slow not many people where at the place. We were seated at bar table. We were given drink menu and then after about 5 minutes looked around nobody doing anything in fact the bartender was stacking wine corks as a game not paying any attention to anyone. Finally from the back of the bar the younger male bartender asked what we wanted, he would not even come out from behind the bar. He did not seem like he wanted to be there AT ALL and we had to pay for that. Drinks came in traditional size martini glasses as opposed to the new size (larger) that most serve in. I don't mind the classic size however they were not close to being full so the based on price and poor service (obviously he did not want to be there) I would not recommend this place. read more

I find it interesting how people give this place bad reviews. I suppose some individuals naturally have a negative disposition? I was at the Stave last night and I must say, it was a fulfilling experience. The first thing that caught my eye when I walked in was the layout. It feels like they spent a little extra on materials and overall decor. Once I sat down at the bar with my date, the bartender, Dexter, came over and inquired about our tastes for the night. I let him know I was leaning towards a wine and he brought over 2 different bottles of Cab and let me sample each. Both were delicious so it was easy to choose. The night progressed seamlessly thanks to the relaxed and comfortable ambience. Service remained pleasantly consistent and at one point, one of the managing partners, Natalie, came over and began talking to us about the bar and its vision. It was an enlightening conversation, helped by the fact that she was genuinely interested in our company and perspectives. We talked about her experiences as a businesswoman and about the bar's direction. Let me tell you, they're on to something...something good. The Stave is a diamond in the rough considering the somewhat sketchy clientele and atmosphere on Pine St. weekend nights. Overall, this place is not about being "happening", it's about quality, from its beer and wine selection, to its service. It definitely helps that when coming up with the formula for the bar, Natalie and friends left out the drop of pretentiousness. Walk in and ask for Dexter or even Natalie and simply ask "How are you?" Trust me, they'll make you feel right at home. I will definitely be back to the Stave soon! read more
