Stopped by this place just to try it. I wasn't that hungry so I only ordered three sides: the Bourbon-glazed green beans with bacon, the brisket chili and the street corn. Both side veggies were the seasonal veggies. Mmmm... WOW! The taste is stellar. I wasn't even that hungry and I ate every bit of what I ordered. I am wildly impressed and honestly didn't expect much. They have beers on tap and a full bar. The place has a huge outdoor patio with an overhead shelter. The building is a former residential home so it sits in the middle of a residential area that's nice. The staff and locals are very friendly. And neighbors walk here to frequent this establishment. I had the brisket "white Wall" sandwich and a side of turkey breast with the seasoned fries as a side. Sorry to say, the best part of my visit was a very nice, cute bartender. The brisket was moist as well as the turkey. They both had a smokey taste and smell, but not a good kind of hardwood smoke, more a my neighbors house is burning down aroma. The horseradish sauce was overpowered by the unpleasant smoke smell. The pickled onions were barely present and tasteless. The turkey had a weird fatty skin that was just plain disgusting. The owner ( i assume) kept popping in and out if the kitchen watching me. ( very creepy vibe) he put 2 types of BBQ sauces in front of me. One was a thick Kansas City style reminiscence of Sweet Baby Rays. The other was a light Carolina looking sauce tasting like a very bad attempt at a remoulade. The menu is very weird. He has "Smoked Salami"and "Smoked Corned Beef Brisket" on the menu. Doesnt sound appitiappitizing at all. Who smokes cured meats? After my food came, some guy came in, sat behind me and proceded to shout drink recipes to the bartenders for the weekend specials to get rid of unwated overstocked liquor. Definatly a buzz kill of any fragment of atmospher in the place. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. Sorry guys. You have to do better. read more

Fantastic BBQ! I ordered some late night BBQ and got a half rack of ribs and a half pound of brisket(i was very hungry). Being from Texas, I'm very particular about my brisket but this was amazing. So good. And the BBQ sauce along with it gets two thumbs up. The rack of ribs were good but not the best. I also snagged a side of Brussel sprouts and mac n cheese. The mac n cheese could use some work but the Brussel sprouts were delicious. Overall, I would return for the brisket and try some other sides! read more

I'm from Memphis TN and Memphis claims they have some of the best BBQ in the country with that being said this was some of the best BBQ I have ever had hands down. I had a different experience at Stellar Hog last night. I stopped in to watch the hockey game and have dinner. I ordered the half slab of ribs with beans and Coles slaw. The plate (tin pan) could barely hold the food and the ribs were cut into two bone. I had a butter knife and no space to cut them. Also, only the lap napkin, no additional napkins to wipe your hands. The beans were barely warm, I think the slaw was actually warmer. The worst was the ribs, very dry, especially the section with the part of the tenderloin attached. Maybe they were just old, it was 6 PM so they were probably cooked the night before. I was pretty disappointed, next time I'll stick with the pulled pork. read more

Ate here for the first time today. It was phenomenal! We shared the cheesy pulled pork fries (half order) and were too full to even eat our meal. They were delicious! I got the Smokey Reubenson and my mom got the White Wall. The corned beef was smoked to perfection! My mom said her brisket was great, too. I can't wait to go back for a cocktail and those fries! The food was really good. Piled on Turkey. Thick cut and smoked. Yum. Service was decent. The patio was real nice!!

Perfect corner bar ambiance with HREAT bbq. 1/4 lb size availability let us try several meats, all spectacular. Weather was bad so we didn't get to sit at huge outdoor area but comfy inside with live music was perfect. read more

Just picked up my take out quarantine order - delicious! Everyone was very friendly, while waiting we talked about how things are going and found out that they are running on a smaller kitchen due to renovating their main kitchen, Wow, doing a great job on a limited kitchen!! Because I waited a little bit (really not long at all plus I was early) they threw in some extra goodies. Certainly not necessary but graciously accepted, They didn't know it but this extra is going a long way to provide a meal for some friends that need a little extra help - or just a really great meal! We passed through St. Louis on our way home to Austin and found this gem on Yelp. Definitely worth the detour from the highway. It was a Friday night with talented live music on the patio and a very cool vibe (again from Austin, so we know our live music). Locals were super friendly and recommended some great dishes. They had already sold out of brisket, turkey & ribs by 6:30PM but pulled pork, speciality sandwiches and sides were all solid. We tried a little bit of everything--smoked wings & cheesy pulled pork fries for appetizers (portions were more than enough for 5 of us, including 2 teen boys). Southside Smoke, SSLT and Smokey Reubenson sandwiches did not disappoint. Brussels sprouts, mac & cheese, beans, slaw and creamy cabbage were all delish. Having both great BBQ and tasty sides is not easy to find, but this place has it. Not to mention a decent craft beer selection. If we were staying in town, we'd still be there! read more

God! This place is not good. From the snotty bar manager to the weak, watered-down cocktails, to the subpar quality of meat, es no bueno! Really awful! My pork was beyond fatty and inedible. Repulsive is an apt description. I also witnessed a server being harassed by a drunk patron and no support was given to the server by management. Is business that bad here that y'all are willing to sacrifice an employee? What jerks! This place was recommended to me. I'm going to have to rethink my friendship with this person. read more

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This is a relatively new (open about 2 years) City of St. Louis #BBQ place in a former neighborhood restaurant/bar, so don't be surprised that everything around this south St. Louis gem is residential. My 86-year-old mom is a BBQ maven and said their ribs are some of the best she's ever had. Sauce is BAKED ON, which is essential, for her, to good ribs. They also provide table sauces to add on, but we did not need any added sauce. GREAT VALUE We had a half-slab of pork with 2 sides and one half of a hoagy bun (toasted, buttered) for $15 + tax, which was an amazingly great deal (new menu: GO!). WHAT WE ORDERED We split the ribs and bun and I had a few fries. I delightedly ate the other entire side (of something I've never had before), "Creamy Cabbage," which was an unusual mixture of green cabbage, corned beef, and something saucy that was cheesy/milky, with great seasoning and warmth, as my treat (it was my birthday lunch celebration, and Mom hates cabbage and corned beef together). We had more than half the crispy french fries (crispy as asked, but a bit too salty for Mom; she scraped salt off before eating) and 2 of the 6 ribs to take home for another meal for Mom. GOOD SERVICE and sufficient help when the new menu tripped up our server a few times (just rolled out this week; not great training, there). ,Nice renovation inside. They also have an outdoor "beer garden," but we stayed indoors (88 degrees and humid today). SEATING & AMBIANCE Has about 6 seats at the bar, 3 - 4 at each of 2 high tops, many 2- and 4-seaters at regular tables. No booths. Plenty of space to walk around. Outdoor seating we didn't see, but probably tables. One problem, but they fixed it: the indoor house music was not only too loud when we arrived, but the house music competed with the kitchen music where we sat (two different types and not pleasant to navigate the conflicting audio of those). We requested and they happily turned down the house music and the kitchen turned theirs off, unasked. Clean bathrooms (Ladies' Room had 2 separately roomed toilets with one shared sink) near the kitchen. Sometimes has live music (listed on chalkboard, but no one had updated this since 8/12/18). LOCATION Parking: on -street, all around and in front. Small lot adjacent. Easy to get to: go via I-55 (via I-255/I-270) and over from Loughborough, etc., or take I-64/40, then meander through some beautiful neighborhoods by getting off at Kingshighway. Use your local knowledge or GPS directions to reach it from your highway exit (it is NOT obvious at all, but it's past Gravois), on the corner of Leona and Burgen Aves. Near the beautiful Holly Hills and Carondelet Parks, and St. Matthews and Concordia Cemeteries. Very close to the Mississippi River, so not far at all from Illinois BBQ lovers. LOGISTICS They offer both eat-in and carry out. Beer and wine lists. Closed on Tuesdays. Opens at 11 AM. read more

Stellar Hog is our favorite quarantine restaurant discovery!! How this wasn't on my radar before is beyond me since we live pretty close, but I'm glad we know what's up now. They have online ordering which was super easy to use, and pickup was quick and easy. Everything we got was delicious and traveled pretty well. I had the pulled pork, baked beans and brussle sprouts and they were all excellent. I can't remember what my boyfriend got but there wasn't any left so I assume it was ok ;) We were starting to get burnt out on our usual BBQ spots, so our Stellar Hog discovery came at the perfect time! Can't wait until it's safe to eat in a restaurant again because this is definitely our kind of place and I fully intend to become a regular. read more

Loved the atmosphere and the food here. The ribs were very good, tender babybacks with a great rub, nice smoke ring, and light glaze. Really didn't need sauce, but I immediately fell in love with their slightly spicy version of a Carolina mustard sauce. It provided a nice balance to the sweetness of the glaze. The pit beans were some of the best I've had in St. Louis. Chunks of tender brisket, and you could taste that it was smoked with the meat. The atmosphere of this place has the feel of a clean, relaxed, local friendly bar. I immediately struck up conversations with the friendly regulars, the bartender was super friendly and top notch, they had a nice local craft beer selection but I opted for a bottle of Bud "fat". There is also a nice outside covered beer garden. This was my first time here, and I'm told the brisket is top notch. That's what I'm going for next time. They also feature a smoked corned beef which is a bit unusual, but I was told that's also amazing. I'm glad to have another good bbq option in town, and I didn't even have to wait in an hour long line for my lunch! Good stuff! read more

Playing catch-up from a January 2018 visit... Wow, seriously? Smoked Corned beef? Smoked WHOLE chicken wings, that's the 'drummie,' 'flat' and 'tip' in their natural, connected state the way wings SHOULD be served! Smoky, juicy and perfectly seasoned. The smoked corned beef was amazing. A taste i'd never experienced and will certainly never forget. My friend even got a second sandwich to go for the next day! The bar has "neighborhood" written all over it, but as an outsider, i felt more than welcome. There was karaoke the night I was there with performers that have certainly been there a time or five! This place is great. a simple, straightforward menu with a cozy atmosphere. The dining rooms limited tables tease what must be a gigantic outdoor space that I will definitely revisit when it's not single digit temps in STL. read more

I had a Dad and Daughter Saturday with my Father and we stopped at The Stellar Hog for lunch. We loved it! It has a nice smoke smell when you walk in but it's not overpowering like some places. We ordered the half order of the Cheesy Pulled Pork Fries for an appetizer. Honestly, this was so delicious and so much food had we finished them we both wouldn't have eaten another bite. Each component of the dish, the French Fries, the pulled pork, the cheese, and the mustard BBQ sauce was good on its own but together it just rocked. I'd order this again and again. Best "dirty" fries I can think of in St. Louis. For lunch he got the Smoked Corned Beef Brisket with Macaroni & Cheese and I got the Smoked Beef Brisket with Cole Slaw. It was all excellent. The brine on the corned beef, the rub on the brisket, the bark, the level of smoke, etc. Do yourself a favor and go here. It's great. I left with a t-shirt. We'll be back. Bravo. read more

Every year I treat my staff to a Holiday Lunch. This year, they chose The Stellar Hog. I've worked South City for over 3 years and WHY have I never heard of this place??? Shame on me! The order was emailed the night before, with an anticipated pick up time of 12:00 pm. I arrived right at 11:55 and was immediately greeted by the woman behind the bar. She was pleasant and had a lovely smile! I told her I was there to pick up an order to go. She offered me something to drink while I waited, I politely declined. She introduced herself as "The Mom"... of the chef. I asked her about the place, she told me some of the history. This place really does look like a hole in the wall in the middle of a neighborhood. Do not allow that to fool you! The bar is beautiful, the place is simple but nicely decorated and it's much bigger than I thought. Then, out comes Alan. He sat down and we started chatting about the establishment, our backgrounds, food in the area, etc. He too, was quite pleasant. Then... the food. Wow. I'm a fan of smoked brisket... it takes a lot to get 5 stars from. the slices were thick, juicy, NOT dry at all... I opted for the seasonal vegetables, which were cabbage and I'm not a fan. In their defense, I had no idea what I was getting. I also ordered a side of pit beans. Perfect blend of sweet and salty. The pulled pork fries were great, ribs... perfect pull to them, not fall of the bone, the asparagus salad, YES PLEASE. Needless to say, I WILL be returning! Great job Stellar Hog! Just a couple extra recommendations. First, the bloody Maries are great. They make their own mix and will put a piece of bacon in it along with the olives and pickled okra. Next, I finally tried the pulled pork cheesy fries. Pretty much the ultimate comfort food. And the proportions allow you to get everything in each bite. Finally, the fried pretzels with cheese are even better than they sound. No batter, just fried and crispy on the outside and warm and soft in the middle. read more
