Hopefully my friends from Bend don't see this or hate me for it, but honestly i didn't find this place very appealing. I'm not a whiskey drinker, but they are, so we all gathered for some food and drinks before splitting up for the evening. Hubby and I wanted beer, we asked what was on top - all local - which is super awesome - but if i'm not from there, i have no idea what you just said. I asked him about them and if they were hoppy. Not very much of an answer and i ended up with an un-drinkable beer for me. The food. It's fru fru. My table mate got the chicken pot pie and i anticipated food envy - alas it's was de-constructed, so there was no crust. WHAT? You can't call it chicken pot pie if there isn't any pie! I went with the french onion soup. No gooey cheese on top, only 1 little crouton... sigh. Good for a dress to impress date night, but Bend doesn't really seem that place for that. read more

Conceptually this place would be really great - whiskey and hearty grub. However the service is awful. The bartender spent most of his time chatting with groups of friends at different tables instead of making drinks, so the waitress was left scrambling around trying to cover the entire bar. We were ignored with empty drinks for around 15 minutes. We wanted to get food but that was impossible without an actual server to order from. Eventually a group of 20 people crowded in and that was our signal to leave. Won't go back unless they learn how to run a restaurant. read more

Really? If you're calling yourself a whiskey bar, and even getting cute with the (e), you probably ought to know the basic tenets of the spirit. There's a French whiskey in the Bourbon category, 2 blends listed in the single malts, and when I asked about the age statement on a Rye, the owner told me it didn't have one because it's less than 4 years old. The blood & sand cocktail tasted like a melted cherry jolly rancher. If that's his free pour, he might want to straw test and spend some time practicing. Perhaps the biggest problem was that neither the owner nor the other bartender bothered to ask why the undrinkable cocktail just sat full at our table. Instead, they charged us. So much for service. If you want a regular bar with a better than average whiskey selection, and a vibe a lot like a McMenamins pub, this is the spot. If you want a knowledgeable caring staff and a good cocktail, hop on the freeway and head out of town because I haven't found it in Bend. read more

Went to Stihl for my birthday on Friday, 12/5/14, with another couple. Even though it was a Friday, there was ample seating available. My wife and her friend got there about 5 minutes before us boys. They immediately asked the waitress for some waters. We arrived and waited another 5 minutes before we finally had to stop the waitress to place our drink order. Again with the wait - 2 Redbreasts and 2 beers. We actually had to flag her to our table AGAIN to order our food. BTW, still no waters. It's amazing that she would walk by our table multiple times without acknowledging us. It seemed we were inconveniencing her and she couldn't be bothered. Finally got the food after another long wait along with our waters and drinks. Pork chops were great though bordering on overcooked. Very flavorful and the sides were perfect. The burger was a little overdone (mediocre) but the fries were excellent. All in all, the food is above average. The service is horrendous. For a bill just under $200, I expect a little more on service. Good food will only get you so far in this town, especially in that little pocket off the main drag Stihl is located at. Not a long lasting track record of restaurants in that space. Keep up that service and you won't be around much longer, I expect. I tipped her accordingly though I think I may have been a little too generous. Maybe a new employee or RE-TRAINING is required!!! Let me begin by saying that my husband and I have always had positive experiences in our visits here. Not always amazing, but always positive. However, I am concerned by their increasingly lackadaisical attitude toward proper restaurant/bar operation. In September, they received a 78 on a health inspection, which, though not horrible, is not a passing score and suggests some need for serious improvement. Unfortunately, they don't see to have found a long-term solution to these issues, because things have gotten worse. On their most recent health inspection (from May 23rd), they scored a 47. This is very VERY far from passing, and indicates that the establishment is being run with very little consideration for state laws or the well-being of their customers. I, for one, will be staying away until some assurances have been made that they are cleaning up their act and have made appropriate changes to staffing/management that allowed this situation to exist in the first place. read more

I don't know why this place isn't slammed to the gills EVERY NIGHT. BEST FOOD IN BEND. PERIOD! If my mom made food this good, I would still live at home and wouldn't care what my girlfriend thought. I LOVE your whiskey selection and your staff helped me to discover a new favorite islay for me...HUGE props as I would say that the probability of someone's recommendation that will stick with me is about 1 in 10.....and for me to discover a new whiskey...excellent. I HIGHLY recommended this place for a romantic date night.. it kind of small inside and all the tables are bar height and I like that.. the food was so good, they say small plates but as you can see by my pictures it was plenty to share.. we sat at the bar and tried a couple of their signature cocktails they were made with flair from the friendly bartenders working there.. we are surely going back here.. do yourself a favor and try several of the appetizers. . Went to visit with my friends, first time at Stihl last night 3/28. How should I put this: The place was packed. Everyone loved the food. The drinks were flowing. And that's where my issue starts. By the time I got to my senior buddies (65 years of age), and they had been there for several hours, eating and drinking, it was quite obvious that they had had enough to drink. But the waitress kept coming and they kept ordering. No regard for their state of intoxication. Don't get me wrong - I'm for people having a good time and enjoying themselves. But these guys had to drive home. No way in hell. Really Stihl? I know everybody wants to make a buck, and waitresses want big tips, but they have to be aware of the drinking laws in our state. You don't serve drunks more booze. Luckily I was there and I drove my friends home, or they would have killed somebody if not themselves. Got kicked out because I date one of the bartenders exes. I was threatened with cops and other means while asking for a reason I was being asked to leave. I was not intoxicated and had not acted at all inappropriately and never was given a reason I wasn't welcome there besides "as long as I work here you are not welcome". Not the type of business I'd like to support and honestly. This place could burn to ash and the community would not miss it. Shit cocktails and even worse staff. read more

Great little whiskey bar tucked away around the corner of the Franklin Crossing building. There have been a string of really cool bars here but they don't seem to last because the location is off the beaten path of Bond Street. They have a great selection of whiskeys, as the name implies. And the prices are all very reasonable compared with other whiskey bars I've been in. They also have some very tasty house cocktails. But it doesn't end there! The food is amazingly good too. And very reasonably priced. They have creative small plates if you're just looking for a snack (try the steak fingers - AMAZING!). And they also have great entrees. We had four of us and we each ordered something different and shared and they were all great! Atmosphere is subdued swank (yes, I did just coin that term). Walking towards The Stihl Whisk(e)y Bar I pondered... Chainsaws and booze? Bad combo for most people but perhaps they support ER docs and limb specialists by keeping them in work. And isn't it a STILL and not a STIHL? And Whisk(e)y? whats up with the ( and the E and the )? So this morning I set out to find out. Yes, a STILL is what they make alcohol in and everything I can find on STIHL is that it's a number one selling brand of chainsaw (I do like mine). Did the chainsaw family decide to dabble in booze? And the E? I find that the Scots spell it whisky and the Irish spell it whiskey, with an extra 'e'. This difference in the spelling comes from the translations of the word from the Scottish and Irish Gaelic forms. Whiskey with the extra 'e' is also used when referring to American whiskies. So it seems they wanted a sign that made everyone happy and the bartenders wouldn't catch constant crap for. BTW I'm listening to Crosby Stills Nash and Young (another name to make everyone happy) as I write this. Seems appropriate, no? KUUDOS to The Stihl Whisk(e)y Bar for hosting a fundraising event for Street Dog Hero and their wayward pups from around the world. What a great night. Poor service. Love the ambience of the bar, but the service was terrible. We were a group of four and the bartender/waiter brought us menus quickly, then we never got another look from him or the server. He brought drinks to the tables next to us and would turn his back before we could get his attention. We sat there for 30 minutes visiting as it got busier and finally said forget it. Used to be one of my favorite hot spots when this place opened - but in the last few months super disappointed with the service and won't come here again. Good luck getting the attention of a server or your drink from the bar in less than 20 minutes. When you do finally get that delicious glass of whiskey, it's been sitting so long that it's watered down. We were one of 3 tables in the whole place. Our server grabbed our cards and left them sitting by the computer for anyone to grab for 15 minutes before she finally decided to run them and let us leave. Worst. Experience. read more

Apparently it's a thing in Bend to randomly add other people drinks to the tourists' tabs. My wife and I were on our honeymoon having some drinks at this bar. We started talking to another patron about her mountain bike incident. She broke her nose in three places and has road rash on her shoulders and knee. When we asked for the check, they thanked us by putting an extra three drinks on our tab. When I asked about the additional charges, I was told that they were added because we were sitting and talking to the gentleman next to us. He showed up 20 minutes later and obviously knew the bartender and did not know us. I like the whiskey and the atmosphere, but this place is shady. read more

Literally the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Came here as a group of 4 to celebrate my friends birthday. We got a seat promptly which was great, unfortunately the rest of the experience here was horrendous. We were given a server who was quite simply the rudest, most unfriendly server I have ever had. It took 15 mins to order a drink, we ordered our food with our drinks as it was taking forever. The server came out with water that was luke warm. We drank it because we were thirsty within about 2 mins and our water was never refilled for the rest of the night. We asked if they offered anything to celebrate birthdays. We were abruptly told no and that was that (again a first, I've never been told no to that question before). We waited and waited, finally got our drinks. 40 mins went by and still no food. The server came by and dropped off our silverware, we asked if the food would be coming out. His reply was "it's first come, first served, there's a lot of ppl ordering food". This was a Lie as the table behind us arrived later than us and got their food before us. Finally the food arrived, it was gross. Freezing cold like it was purposely left longer than it should be. Not once, whilst we are did our server check on us, ask how the food was, offer us a second round of drinks, we actually had to ask the chef who ran our food to us to get drinks. Once we finished our cold, bland food we waited and waited, our dishes sat there forever. Finally I caught his attention and asked for the check. I sent an item back and told him I would have sooner should he have checked on us. He had the audacity to state he had checked on us, this is a complete lie. Not once did he check on us, as I previously mentioned, he didn't so much as refill our water. Needless to say his tip was left as zero. Tips are not mandatory, they are earned via respect and professionalism. We were truly appalled at the way we were treated especially after wanted to visit for so long. It really is a shame that an establishment such as this hires people of that caliber. We will not be returning and I suggested you avoid this place at al costs. We arrived early for dinner so we could get a table that would accommodate a car seat...yes, we are the family bringing a 4 month old to a whiskey bar (we had a gift certificate.) Had delicious drinks (ginger cube will be replicated at home) and started with truffled tots. SO MANY DELICIOUS TOTS. Meals were fish and chips (good, not amazing) and the pork belly Cobb. The Cobb is probably the best deal for a $13 salad in town, chock full of goodies. We wound up getting a box for the rest of the tots and the pork belly pieces I couldn't finish from my salad. My husband and I were here visiting and we were looking for a chill place to get some good drinks. We came across this place and it was a bit busy (not surprised because it was a Friday night at 9 pm) but we had a great time. Great, excellent choices for whiskeys and great tasting drinks! Best, the servers were super attentive and helpful. We didn't eat any food so I can comment but the service was friendly and quick. Only downside was the darkness in the back of the restaurant.
