Came here with my sister, 2 kids and my husband. We waited and they kept apologizing about no tables near the kids area. We said we'd wait, but a few other guest came in and were immediately sorted. I'm very visibly pregnant and the host asked us if we'd like to sit at a high top table. My kids are 2 and 5. There's no way that's happening. Again, I told him we would wait. At this point, I'm upset because numerous people have been seated in the area we were waiting on. I can't comment on the food, because we haven't even tried it. We're just visiting this area and I really wanted to try it . I haven't eaten all day and now At this point, I will NEVER come back to try this place. This is a great local place to eat. Some of the things that I have enjoyed the most here are: - Jalapeño pork chop - Pecan-crusted tilapia - Coconut cream pie - Cornbread (in the free bread basket) - Southern greens (side) - Spinach (side) If you eat healthy, there are decent choices for daily use, but be sure and save up one of your indulgent meals for a visit here to have their corn bread and coconut cream pie. The pecan crusted tilapia (I get it every time) So good and the cornbread and rolls really good too. Our service was fine, but our meal was a bit lacking. I ordered fried catfish, red beans and rice, and string beans. Red beans and rice was good, although it looked a little old, but the rest of my meal was a different story. My fried catfish was so thin that it seemed really burnt and almost shattered as I try to pull it apart with my fork and knife. I sent it back, and it was replaced. The replacement was another extremely thin cut of catfish. Even then, it just seemed dried out, and with little flavor. The string beans seemed very bland, being the obvious choice for a restaurant that is named after it. Also, the strings that held the beans together were not removed. My favorite part was the red beans and rice, and the rolls that came with the meal. seems like if there are certain things on the menu that they can't figure out how to do remotely well, that they should just remove that item from the menu. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, and maybe removing this from the menu wouid free them up, to have more fresh options. It wasn't terrible, that I certainly wouldn't go back for it. My first and last time visiting this establishment. If I hadn't been there to witness it, I literally wouldn't believe it. 4 of my Co-workers told me of their experience about two weeks ago, so I asked them if I could join them for lunch, since that's where they were going. Our lunch is at 12, and we made it to the restaurant roughly, 12:05, 12:08 at the latest and were seated quite promptly. About 12:15 a waitress comes and takes our drink orders and we order the food as well because of the limited time we had. About 12:20, two ladies come in and sit at the table next to us. They order and sit and wait for their food. About 10 minutes later, they get ALL of their food. Now, out of all of us at the table, Only one person ordered real food--the rest of us got appetizers. Our food came out at about 12:50, with one of my co workers only ordering fries...YES, FRIES. Over 40 minutes for fries? So, of course she and another co worker asked for a refund, as we only had 10 minutes left for lunch. I was hungry and wasn't going anywhere else, so he (the manager) discounted my check and that of my best friend. I paid and as we were leaving, I heard the two Caucasian ladies having a conversation about us. Verbatim--she said: "Do they always have to act like that?" I don't know about y'all, but I'm the nicest and the most professional person that I know, but when those words left her lips, I saw red. I turned around and said, "Excuse me?" but before I could walk back in that direction my best friend grabbed my arm and pulled me out the door as to not cause any scene. They sat us in the Rosa Parks section...and I never understood why people have preconceived, racist, or unrealistic thoughts about people of color, but will hire African Americans to cook, raise their kids, and eat their food. Pardon the expression, but that food is only good because there is some COLOR in the kitchen of the establishment. I won't be back, ever. I felt so disrespected and uncomfortable. We ate here 6 years ago. I liked it but husband did not so we hadn't been back. Today I needed some roast beef pot roast. I was on a mission. I remembered this place. Me and my sons went. They are in elementary school so their foodie skills aren't developed yet. But they liked the kids meals. I liked the $5 price! We ordered the baked white fish (not recommended) and meat loaf (ok) with brussel sprouts (highly recommended) and southern style greens (also highly recommended). I highly enjoyed the vegetables and would easily get those again. The complimentary rolls were good. For drinks, we ordered 2 milkshakes - these are not recommended if you're not used to this style. What a great meal. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes and black eyed peas! It was tender and juicy with a home made gravy, piled high on the plate. The black eyed peas were some of the best I've had anywhere and the corn bread was sweet and yummy. My husband had chicken fried steak with mashed taters and greens. He was pleased as well. The greens needed a little salt and pepper but they were cooked to perfection. My sister had the pan fried chicken breast with sweet potato casserole and spinach. The chicken was probably the best thing on the table but the sweet potato casserole was a little different and wasn't a huge hit. My brother-in-law had chopped steak with green beans. The steak was tasty but the string beans were out of this world, considering the name of the restaurant, that shouldn't surprise me.Everything is supposedly homemade and tasted that way!! I recommend this restaurant highly but if you're not into lots of children with dinner, ask to be seated away from the children's play area. Our visit this past Sunday evening was very disappointing. If the restaurant been crowded I might be able to excuse slow service, but it wasn't crowded. We waited at least 25 minutes for our orders ( chicken fried steak specials and 2 kids' meals) and absolutely nothing we were served was hot. I'm guessing the reason for the delay was that our orders were left sitting for a while at the serving window. Not a meal to remember-- at least, not in a good way. read more

OK, I am cranking up the rating for String Bean to a solid Four Stars. It is good to FINALLY find a home-style dinner in the North Dallas Area. The chopped steak was above average and overall everything was very good. Service was Excellent. Desert was also well above average..I had the Coconut Cream Pie. Double-Yum! Giving this three stars more for history than this visit to their new location. We've been wanting to try it for sometime, as this space has been a musical chair of different businesses. I think it works well for the String Bean and is much improved over their previous location which was run-down and in a sketchy strip center that is still trying to come to terms with the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood in which it resides. Service, as usually is the case at the String Bean was good. Friendly. Only negative is that the waiter, failed to not charge us for our kid meals (Kids eat free on Mondays, which we didn't know until we walked in) and I missed it when I paid and only realized I'd been overcharged on the drive home which miffed me. Food though was average. I had the chicken strips with gravy and mashed potatoes and spinach. The mashed potatoes were warm at best. Part were cold. Spinach was ok. Not great. Chicking strips had a weird consistency made palatable by the gravy I dipped them into. The kids meals, which as I've noted, weren't free was spaghetti and didn't look appetizing (another tip for the SB folks...put the noodles in a bowl for the kids. Easier for them to eat and will save your bus boys from having to pick up noodles.) Wifes veggie plate was ok she said. Not great. So a big mediocre for the food. Which is upsetting but the new locale and all, I think we'll be back and give the SB another go...as I hope they can make it in that space which again, I like. read more

The five-star rating for The String Bean for the following reasons: The prices are very reasonable. You get a complementary bread basket with your choice or wheat or regular white rolls, and cornbread. You can get the whole basket of one type of bread or a mix of all three. The consistency in good taste and quality in the dishes is second to none. Although I usually go with the Big Texas, a few of the other dishes are very good as well. My wife gets the pecan-crusted tilapia most of the time we come eat here. About three or four of the sides offered here are noteworthy, such as the sweet potato casserole, fried okra, and southern greens. Waitstaff provide prompt and hospitable service. So glad my grandfather recommended we go here, was delicious comfort food! My kids really enjoyed the playroom, they played while we ordered and waited on our food. The prices are great, kids meals are $5 which included their drinks and a cookie for dessert. I had the meat loaf, with steamed spinach and steamed yellow squash, YUM!! It was all so great and tasty, but I could not get enough of the yellow squash, so perfect!! Very tender and seasoned just right. We enjoyed our visit and will for sure be back. I loved this place! I went on a Tuesday for lunch and had their frito pie special for the day and it was delish. The chili was authentic homemade chili with red kidney beans and they served it with jalapeño cornbread which would melt in your mouth. I have no idea how this place gets good reviews other than to say this is an obvious sign that most people have no clue what "home cooked" food means. I'm about to give up trying to find a chicken fried steak that is not pre-made, frozen, and then reheated someway and served. The cream gravy was from a box (or maybe a jar). My chicken fried steak was actually still cold (2nd time in two weeks at two different "home cooking" restaurants). My daughter actually asked if we were at Diary Queen, since that's virtually idential to what we got. The vegetables also are not fresh. ITS NOT HARD TO USE FRESH INGREDIENTS. And if you advertise as a "home cooking" restaurant, that's what I expect. For $10 a plate (plus a couple bucks for a drink and another $2.50 for a salad consisting of lettuce that had gnats running all over it -- which my daughter that was fascinating), and you get a $18 meal that's worth $5. I'm not even that picky -- NHS, Texas Roadhouse, Houston's -- all have great fresh, hand breaded CFC and veggies. Again, I have no idea how this gets repeated high reviews. I can only assume most people don't cook at home and really just can't tell the difference between a fresh hand bread steak and a frozen one, the difference between fresh and canned green beans, what fresh fried okra tastes like, what the difference in fresh corn and canned (or maybe frozen?) corn is.... The corn dogs (daughter) are, I'm 99% sure, the ones from the Blue Box you buy at Walmart (not unusual for the kids menu). The only thing saving this from a 1 star was the fact that both the kids loved the macaroni. As noted on my Norma's review, my quest for FRESH home cooking continues to strike out. Visited for a meal 6/01/20. First, the waiter told us that they had no lemon for our iced tea because there was not enough demand for lemons to warrant ordering them. When the food arrived, the whole kernel corn was at room temperature, at best - green beans had no seasoning - and we had ask for salt and pepper. Also, the corn bread was gooey and under-cooked. At one time (when they were located at Coit & Spring Valley), this was one of our favorite restaurants. I LOVE this place! Great food, warm and friendly service, and unbeatable prices. I miss my mom's home cooked meals and this place is about as close as I can get without traveling back home. Whenever we're here there are always faces that seem to be the "regulars" who are talking and laughing with the staff, who have been working there for years! (Some more than 20yrs!) I've never had anything that wasn't delicious. My favorites are the tilapia and the catfish but of course the cornbread is a must. Don't forget the black eyed peas! Recently I had the tortilla soup and it was wonderful. I've been here for both table service meals and for brunch buffet. Food is always hot and yummy! A must if in the area. This place has been around since 1977. I have been to all 4 locations the one restaurant has been in. My Dad stopped and got dinner the night my brother was born on his way home. They have the best home style cooking whether you are getting Chicken Fried Steak or Pot Roast or Meatloaf they have 19 side items to choose from. My favorites are Meatloaf, Pot Roast or Chicken strips. But I know the Chicken Fried Steak is awesome. Take your kids and enjoy Debbie and the gang make dinner for you without breaking your bank. By the way save room for the cobbler of the day with their homemade ice cream. It is the best desert I have ever had at a restaurant. read more

It is really good food and not terribly expensive. I tried the breakfast buffet once, I was not a fan. I don't know if they still have it. But other than that misstep everything else I've tried is great. The Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken are really great, possibly the best thing they serve. Sodas are bottomless too. Their is a great stop for a sit down restaurant. I know Yelp says it's an American restaurant, which I agree, but it has a southern slant. Cornbread, chicken fried steak, and of course string beans. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. Always good. Do not pass up the deserts. The service is always spot on. Food is ok, could use some updating. I walked in today and was totally ignored by hostess. In fact she looked past me to greet guests she clearly knew. Sat myself at the bar and nothing. Clearly the bartender was in the kitchen getting her other guest food. Not one server or the hostess acknowledged me.
