Sometimes I crave home cooking, and I mean not my home cooking. lol! When I want home cooking, The String Bean always satisfies this craving for me. It's been in business for many years, and I have watched it transform over the years. But what they have going on now is the best, in my humble opinion. The bread is delicious - every time. I love bread, so this means a lot to me because many restaurants treat bread as a last thought. But not The String Bean. No sir! It's always fresh, fluffy, and tasty. Their chicken and dumplings used to be only available on Saturday nights - now, it's on the menu, and that makes me happy. It's really tasty! The service is consistent and always friendly. Maybe because we have been coming here for so long, but it feels like you're walking into a families house when coming here to eat. Tonight, we ate outside because the restaurant is getting updates. Based on the reviews, I did not know what to expect! The ambiance was okay, just very basic. We were greeted and seated promptly. Our server was very polite and efficient. There was no cocktail/wine/beer menu so my husband just ordered a Jack and coke. For appetizers, we got mozzarella sticks, they were pretty decent. For entrees, I got blackened tilapia with broccoli and onion rings. The serving was big. I was really impressed with the tilapia, it was well seasoned and had a good spice level. The blackened chicken Southwestern salad was also huge, the chicken was tender and grilled onions added a lot of flavor. For dessert, we got the coconut cream pie, it was delicious. Always good food and great service. Been coming here for years, walked in Sunday after church. Freshly painted walls everything looked very nice, did not think it looked bad before. So Grand Reopening October 4th. Great waiter today, I had the Turkey and dressing special, my lady had chop steak special and Mom had veggie plate, sweet tea and water with lemon all around. This place has a full bar as well, nope not for me, but help yourself. New menus but all the wonderful comfort food, pies and root beer floats you can handle. I have no doubt we'll be back soon. We ordered the Thanksgiving dinner to go and had pickup on the day before Thanksgiving. Food was delicious and hit that homemade mark that you want in a holiday meal! Once in awhile, we would crave southern homestyle comfort food, especially chicken fried steak, which brings us back to care-free school cafeteria days. Upon searching around the area, we gave The String Bean a try. Upon entry, it feels warm and cozy, and we were quickly seated at one of the booths. Our waiter was friendly, welcoming, and professionally nice. Just love the energy and a warmth! For appetizer, we ordered a chicken quesadilla, which was crispy on the outside with lots of big meaty chicken pieces and bacon and mozzarella cheese on the inside. Next came the chicken fried steak along with two sides of veggies for each of us. Although this may not be our number one favorite chicken fried steak in Texas, it is still pretty tasty; and the entree portion was good for the price and everything was fresh. We had the chocolate creme pie for dessert; a little too sweet for us, but nice to complete the meal. Overall a great dining experience! read more

It used to be a favorite for after Church on Sunday. We haven't been in a couple of months so I don't know if they changed ownership or management. Service is still great but the food was terrible. The menu is completely redone and no longer offers the small portions segment with the same sides. They did allow me to order the 55 plus portion but now the Mac and cheese, and baked potato is an up charge and they took off the fried green beans! Why?? BIG MISTAKE! We asked for cornbread and rolls, rolls looked fresh but the cornbread had dry, hard spots on some pieces and the other piece wasn't even done. I didn't eat it. Then out comes the pot roast with a gelatinous blob of gravy on top. The "loaded baked potato" had no butter. The corn was lukewarm. I should have sent it all back. Go back to what made you popular! And then comes the check, now unless you are ordering 3-5 pm they now charge a larger amount for the smaller portion and the new price is hard to see on the menu. I ate here today for lunch. First time I've gotten food from here in about 30 years. I'd have to say it was surprisingly bad. I got chicken fried steak mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. Mashed potatoes were good. Chicken fried steak seem to be prefab. Previously frozen possibly from Sam's. And had an odd flavor like it wasn't fresh. The rolls weren't baked in house they were just some store-bought not good type. That's pretty lazy. Green bean casserole. What can I say .I thought it was a pretty much standard recipe. Casserole implies more than two things to me it's multiple things. Well they decided to leave the fried onions out of it. The only thing that gives green bean casserole any flavor or texture. This was just cream of green beans. Nothing added to the beans except some kind of paste that they charge an extra dollar 10 for. Maybe the other things they sell are good but if they cut this many corners and don't care about making it flavorful I see no reason to return. Went there with some other retired friends. Walk in and the place looks great and inviting , but that is what it is an old friendly restaurant that is warm and inviting. The waitress is great as she always is which is a reason to go there. We ordered Meat Loaf, Catfish, and Chicken fried steak with gravy. Food came very fast and was very good, good home cooking for sure. Greens taste like my Moms, other vegetables were spot on. I had a biscuit and a cornbread which was very good as well. This restaraunt had gone through a couple change of hands after the origional owners sold it. The second owners were bad. The food was really bad. The server was terrible. Went with my family of 7. The original String Bean (from the 70's) was excellent for the many years I ate there, but then it took a downward turn, and I stopped going. However, I have revisited now several time and it is as good as ever! If you're in the mood for home cooking with the best coconut pie ANYWHERE, this is the place! The waitstaff is delightful. I had been coming this restaurant when it was located closer to Spring Valley operated by the original owners. It had great food. When it was sold to a corporate type owner, it fell down in quality. I came a few times but it was so bad, I stopped coming. I heard there were new individual owners and gave it a try. It was excellent like the ole days. My family and I dined at String Bean Richardson on a Sunday about 1PM. I fully expected there to be a restaurant full of people. However, there were several available tables. This is important because it took a little over an hour to get our food from the time we arrived, or about 45 minutes from the time we ordered. Our waiter was Zachary. He was nice enough, but not great at checking on us for refills. Given the amount of time it took to receive our order, it would have been nice to have had more attentive service. The 2 stars is for the service and for the cold mashed potatoes I was served after waiting so long. I wasn't about to send my plate back. There's no telling how long it would have taken. I could easily understand the time taken if the restaurant was full, but that wasn't the case. Having said that.........if my rating was based on the chicken fried steak alone, I would give it 5 stars. It was definitely some of the lightest, crispiest, and most tender CFS I've ever eaten. Sadly, I probably will not make the drive again based on the frustrating experience. A discount offered, or even a sincere apology from the manager would have gone a long way in this situation. read more

I've been dining in or ordering To-Go from String Bean for years! Even back in the day when they were located at Coit & Spring Valley! Really love the Campbell & Coit location even better! You can even dine in the small patio if the weather is nice. My favorites are the pot roast with mashed potatoes (your choice of white or brown gravy that I always get on the side) and sliced carrots. You can pick from rolls or cornbread or a mixture of both. I love their moist cornbread! I used to get the chicken fried chicken, pan-fried, but they changed something in their breading recipe spice wise and it's no longer my favorite. Hubby likes the chicken fried steak. I love how they rotate the veggie and dessert of the day. It's posted on some white boards throughout the restaurant. Highly recommend the coconut cream pie for dessert! Or the fruit cobblers are good too. Pre-Covid when dining in with the grandkids, they had a great play area and it was nice to sit nearby where you could keep an eye on them while having adult conversation at your table. Lots of booths and tables spread out throughout the restaurant. Other customers always seem to be enjoying their meals and it's just a nice place to get a good home style meal. Our server this visit was Misha and she was great - food was served super fast and with a smile. We visited this place for my daughter's birthday, and I was initially hesitant as I prefer sticking to what I know. However, I decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I particularly enjoyed the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and greens - everything was delicious, except for the mac and cheese, which tasted store-bought. The cornbread is A+!!!! Overall, it was a great experience, and we plan to visit this place frequently. The service was satisfactory. Initially, I was taken aback by the ambiance, as it seemed to cater mostly to older Caucasian diners. However, I soon realized that it didn't matter, as everyone was friendly and welcoming. The string bean was near by and that's what's on the menu for the day. It was around lunch time and it was not very busy seemed to be nothing but regulars. I ordered the chicken fried steak with onion rings and broccoli as my sides. I had my topped off with brown gravy, the broccoli was good cooked perfectly. The chicken fried steak was good, the brown gravy was a bit salty but it passed not to the point where it overpowered. The corn bread was moist and good as well. Went here bc I had a groupon and I honestly have to say one of my top 5 experiences since moving to the metroplex 14yrs ago. The food is fresh and righteously seasoned, the cornbread fluffy and tasty ( put the butter down it is not needed), and Dave was on point with the service. The blackened salmon over rice with green beans, and mac n chz was a hit! The peach cobbler had me wanting more as I type my review. It was PERFECT with ice cream on the side.
