But do not let that scare you away from this lunch time gem The menu is smaller but has unique selections. Everything I've had is delicious. The volunteers are always extremely nice, fast and efficient. The prices are cheap and they even offer a work for your meal program for those who struggle financially. I must be out of touch and out of the information loop because I just recently learned about this restaurant. It offers simple food that tastes just as the menu describes. I must admit that I do not think of the Portland area when I envision restaurants that offer good, healthy food. So, I'm really glad that this area has this establishment as a nice addition to the neighborhood. The colorful mural on the side of the building alerts you that the inside must be a really good place. The front of the restaurant touts a feeling of "natural goodness" and it invites you to cross the threshold of the front door. As soon as you do, you are welcomed by volunteer servers, who will, depending upon the crowd, tell you to sit at any table that you desire. If you have not visited prior, they will tell you of the mission and concept of the restaurant and give you a menu. Because they have contracts with local farmers and growers, the menu offers dishes made from seasonal spices, fruit and vegetables. My burger was tasty. The table is a very warm and welcoming place. The location offers street parking that's all very convenient with no longer than a 2min walk to the front door. All the people are super sweet and attentive they're truly a team, as soon as we were seated our drink order was taken, as soon as our last person arrived our food order was taken promptly! First of all we were told the cake is fantastic and limited so we ordered the cake first . I shamelessly snuck a bite before the food came ya know just to confirm . Ok so as you see they have a very nice selection on the menu fresh seasonal salad and soup options, and an array of different sandwiches. I really enjoyed the pulled chicken sandwich on the jalapeno cheddar roll with a side of pasta salad and cheese burger soup! My friend really loved the meat loaf sandwich and the strawberry asparagus salad and the garlic Parm fries! Everything was served fast and d fresh! The flavors were on point! My only complaint would be the potatoes in the soup and the egg salad (we ordered to go for dinner) weren't quite al dente and the egg salad was a bit dry. Besides that they're amazing! This small restaurant had piqued my interest ever since I heard of its mission to feed everyone who "sits at our table." Honorable, to be sure. And I love that it opened its doors on the west side of town, in an area in need of healthier, affordable dining options. The Table specializes in farm-to-table dishes -- a far cry from the nearby fast food. So I was very excited to finally get the opportunity to dine here. I really didn't know what to expect, and what I found was a small restaurant, simple interior, no wait and friendly servers. From what I've read about this restaurant, the servers are volunteers, but you wouldn't know that from their service. They definitely seemed at ease and to know what to do. I got the bacon blue flatbread, which is made with hickory smoked bacon and smoked blue cheese, topped with acorn squash, arugula and honey. I wish the sandwich was a little heavier on the squash and honey, but I love this combination and would get this again. The bacon was thick; they definitely didn't skimp. I also got the parmesan fries on the side. Now, Louisville is a town that excels at french fries. (I'm looking at you, Sidebar and Mussel and Burger Bar.) So my bar for fries is rather high, and this is especially true for parmesan fries. These fries were OK. Just OK. They were light on the parmesan, but the fries had a nice crispness and seasoning on them. My meal came to the very affordable $8. I wish I would have remembered to "pay it forward" and add some extra to my bill to help pay for a meal for someone who can't. Next time, for sure. And there will be a next time. The Table is a hot lunch place, but the turn around for a table is not too shabby. My coworkers and i went around prime lunch hour 1215pm and it was jamming. Lots of people there, but we still got a table instantly. There were 5 of us. The mission is what did it for us. Everyone is incredibly nice and it really is pay what you can mission with suggested $ amount. Inspiring mission statement, dedicated volunteers, and amazing food. You need to go eat at The Table as soon as possible! I followed The Table on social media for months before their opening. It was so wonderful to see this project come together (virtually) and then experience it firsthand. The dining space in Portland is rustic industrial. We sat at a cozy, two-top in the front window on a busy Friday afternoon. We arrived at 1 pm, but things stayed hopping almost until closing time. The wait staff are all community volunteers and we found everyone to be so warm and welcoming. They were genuinely happy to be there and to lend a hand. One even gave us each a rose on our way out the door! I've been stalking the Veggie Philly Cheesesteak ($6) on Facebook for a while. I ordered it with a small garden salad as a side ($2). You can do a sandwich, side, and soda (Coke products are served here) as a combo for $10, but I'm trying to stay away from sugary drinks. My friend had the grilled cheese and two, side salads. She tried the roasted root vegetable and four potato salad. We were told that these were being rotated off the menu and some new items would replace them by early Feb. she loved all her picks. My sandwich was filled with smoky mushrooms in a rich, Ale-8 cheese sauce. The bread was terrific and held up well to the filling. My side salad had crisp greens and homemade croutons that was complimented by a knock-out, Ranch dressing. I held off from ordering dessert since I was headed to Scarlet's after lunch. The Table is a pay-what-you-can restaurant with incredibly inexpensive suggested prices. They have solid sandwiches, good salads, and my favorite Parmesan fries! During COVID, they have been offering free hot meals for food insecure folks and, at times, they have also had online ordering available for lunch. The Table is awesome! It's high quality food, made with locally grown fresh ingredients, for a very reasonable price. They offer suggested prices for dishes, but The Table is operates under a pay-what-you-can model. They value a place where everyone is welcome, and that includes those that can't typically afford to dine out for meals. They embrace a pay what you can afford concept by providing a few payment options. You can pay the full amount of the suggested meal price, you can pay for your meal plus a little extra to pay it forward, or you can pay with your time in service (they let people clean the restaurant, bus tables, do dishes, etc. for meals). This is such an awesome thing, because I think so many people take for granted the fact that they can dine out whenever they want. This review is solely based on my takeout experience on Friday- I can only imagine how great it is to dine in at The Table. I came in around an hour before close and I was greeted immediately and asked if I was dining in with them today or taking something to go. When I told them I wanted to order some takeout, they gave me a menu, which is short and sweet. The friendly guy at the counter informed me that their menu changes about every three months or so, but one dish that has been consistent is the chicken sandwich. I was trying to decide between the ham and cheese and the chicken sandwich- that sealed the deal for me. Chicken sandwich, it was! I also order Parmesan fries and a side salad with ranch. My drive to work was about 35-40 minutes and the food seemed to hold pretty well! The only thing was that the jalapeño cheddar bun on my sandwich got a little bit firm which made it difficult to eat. Other than that, everything was great. The sandwich definitely lived up to its reputation. I think that my favorite thing about it was the bacon jam, which brought all the flavors together. The fries, which came with ketchup, were fresh cut and delicious. They were covered with shredded parm, which is my favorite. The salad with ranch was simple and came with locally grown greens, carrots, radish, purple cabbage, and croutons...but it was insanely good. The ranch was awesome. I drove by the Table a million times before finally stopping in. Always wanted to, but I'm only in Portland on Saturdays for yoga (the restaurant is closed on weekends). Glad I finally made it over for lunch on a weekday. This place is wonderful! The staff is so friendly and attentive. The food is delicious, seasonal and so cheap! Plus, I love that it's a "pay what you can" model -- good food, good mission. I've tried a lot of things off the menu, but since they change it every season, my descriptions won't do you much good (short shelf life). But the salads are usually killer. In summer, they had a watermelon salad with feta. Right now (fall), they have this Autumn salad with apples, shredded pumpkin and molasses dressing. Loved this place! It is settled in the Portland neighborhood and goes a unique philosophy for a restaurant pay as you can. Yep. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised by the set up. The main dining area is a bit snug but they offer larger rooms in the back. Portland does not have the greatest rep and as the only non fast food restaurant in the area this place is great! The staff of volunteers and neighborhood residents were nice and very proud of the restaurant as they should be. This place stayed busy! The food was delicious, I had a meatloaf sandwich on a brioche cornbread bun with collard greens on top and parmesean fries...it was all less than $9. For real!! However, as the restaurant does not accept tips and practices the pay it forward principle, I paid enough for someone else to have what I had. I had been wanting to try the place for a while but really never had the opportunity to make it to the area, that should not have been an excuse because it is well worth the drive. I love the mission of The Table and was excited to try after I also saw that the food had good reviews. The place was packed at lunch time, but we were seated within ten minutes. We tried the meatloaf sliders and smoked chicken sandwich with fries and watermelon salad. The fries were extra crispy and has a good portion size. The watermelon salad was also pretty good, with lime and basil and crumby cheese, but not as much watermelon as I was expecting. The meatloaf sliders were a delicious combination of melted cheese and pepper jelly, although the size of the two sliders were pretty small. You can't really understand Louisville or its history without understanding its western neighborhoods; the ones that most affluent eastern Louisvillians reductively refer to as "the West End." And frankly, we won't ever be a whole city, one that heals a history of racial and socioeconomic divisiveness, without your concerted effort to venture west of Ninth Street. In truth, our West End is many different neighborhoods that boast some fantastic residential, church, and community architecture. Some of its neighborhoods are middle class and solid (though all are facing ongoing stress). Still other West End neighborhoods merely need some new TLC to raise up. So, if you're one of Louisville's many east-o-centric citizens, please consider getting over that now and taking an interest. To that end, I highly recommend you begin your journey beyond directional geography by grabbing lunch at Portland's new pay-it-forward restaurant, The Table. Located on Portland Avenue just west of Tim Faulkner Gallery and McQuixote Coffee & Books, that trio alone make for a nice combination afternoon outing. Keep in mind that the East Portland/Shippingport area where The Table is located was always the least ostentatious working class area of Portland, and the area has been in decline since the Great Flood of 1937 began nearly a century-long exodus. That exodus has been exacerbated by complex forces, including (mostly illegal) redlining and pervasive disinvestment. But there's a movement afoot to counter those forces, led by New Directions Housing and more recently joined by Gil Holland's Portland Investment Initiative, which has already committed a lot of capital to redevelopment and historic preservation that also notably embraces sound principles that will do more than just push poor people to other areas. The Table serves high-quality lunch fare with a purpose so don't get the idea this is a soup kitchen. The menu is chock full of tasty, chef-created deliciousness. And, its interior is a rich environment, warm with wood tones, bustling with guests and history, one that triumphantly embodies its stated purpose. If you're not familiar with the pay-it-forward concept, not to worry, as The Table's menu and placard explains how it all works and it is easy to follow (and more about the movement is one edifying Google search away). The small menu offers salads, soups, sandwiches, and dessert made from locally grown food.  Nothing on the menu is over $7; you can get a lunch special with any sandwich, side, and drink for $10.  My sides and salads were fresh and delicious.  The main dishes can be tweaked a bit (the chicken was a bit dry and the soup a tad salty) but it still makes for an enjoyable dining experience.  The restaurant itself is chic and modern, with a community room and office space attached. The concept of the restaurant is a social worker's dream coming true (this social worker at the very least). Healthy food options using locally grown food with a mission geared toward social justice, equality...I love that it's one more new place in Portland. I love the pay what you can afford concept: pay for what you ate, pay extra (pay it forward) to feed others, or work to pay back your meal. I'm not sure if this is an ongoing arrangement, but the day I visited, our server was a volunteer. Therefore the tip we wanted to give her went toward donations (to feed others) instead of actual tipping. I would support the restaurant even if the food wasn't good, but it was. The restaurant was bright and airy, with a country chic feel to it. Think Cracker Barrel, but lighter, brighter and a little more personal--simple, clean bare wood furniture and mason jars. The food was good and tasted home made. I ordered the vegetarian Philly Cheesesteak (no meat) and was satisfied and full. The sandwiches are cheaper than average price for a restaurant sandwich. I seriously don't know how this was my first visit, my parents have a business just 2 blocks away, and I've had to have driven past it dozens of times. I was meeting a friend and she suggested it. I got there and put my name in, it took about 5 mins to be seated but it was prime lunch time on a Friday. Upon looking over the menu I noted that prices where suggestions and it was noted "pay what you can afford". The staff are volunteers, any tips or additional payment is placed into the funds to cover those who cannot afford to pay. The food was fabulous. We both had the grilled cheese, it's white cheeses with thin sliced apples on a lovely bread. I added the sweet potato fries while my friend gad the soup of the day, creamy mushroom. I love the concept of The Table and it's been on my list of places to try for a while now. As someone who goes to church and regularly donates my time and money to help others, I want to support a business that does that+then some. Their menu lists prices, but they operate on a pay what you can model. Their servers don't accept tips, but you can offer a donation that will pay it forward. The restaurant has tons of natural light and is decorated in a neutral color scheme with great black and white prints of Lou long ago. I love history and it's a great way to see how our pretty city used to look! We were there for a speaker luncheon and sat in the back meeting room. It is huge! Tons of room for various meetings- I'll definitely consider it in the future! The food was the real highlight of our visit. My coworker got the bacon flatbread with the side salad. She loved it. I was intrigued by the veggie po boy and it did not disappoint! The sandwich was bursting with flavors and was seriously delightful!
