We were exploring the west end of our city today and decided that we were going to eat at The Table. We arrived early - 11:30 and the crowds had just started to gather. So, their mission is simple. Everyone has a seat at the table, even if you can't afford to pay. There are three paid positions in this restaurant. The rest are volunteers. Even the servers. Let me start by saying that our experience was nothing short of amazing and our food was delicious. We had the pulled chicken sandwich (very large bun picked with pulled chicken), meatloaf sliders, and veggie pepperoni. Our sides including parm fries (which were out of this world delicious) - hot. Crunchy. Topped with a handful of cheese. Yummy. You order ala cart and they offer fries and salads and such for sides. The meatloaf sliders were absolutely delicious. Topped with cheese and pickles on a small bun that was not soggy and had a delicious buttery flavor. Deeeellliicioussss. The veggie pepperoni was served with almond cheese (made into a pimento spread if you will) and my guest said it was absolutely delicious. Served on focaccia bread. Crunchy but not hard. She would have it again and recommend it. We also had the soup of the day. It was called old fashioned goulash. It had a delicious flavor. I might have given it a different name but the name didn't matter because it was awesome. We also inhaled a delicious piece of cookie butter cream cake. It was a simple two layer yellow cake. The cookie butter icing was out of this world. It was whipped. And I could've honestly eaten it without the cake. It was so amazing. We ate the cake first because it was the last piece available. I did a LIBA bus tour of the economic development of the west end of Louisville. While we were here we wanted to have lunch. This spot has got some good press so we wanted to check it out. It has a small but seasonal menu. Since everything is sourced fresh they change the menu throughout the year. We got the meatloaf and strawberry salad. Both were very good and cheap! Sandwiches were $6. Salads were $5. Sides were $2. Drinks $1. Our servers were volunteers and tips went to paying for someone else's meal. Also the vibe was very cheery and happy. This place is wonderful. All of the fantastic things I had heard about The Table are true! The food here is top quality and very tasty. All of the employees and volunteers we encountered were very friendly and you could tell how much they just loved being there. My mom and I split the pulled ham and Swiss and the meatloaf sliders and I had the soup of the day which was a sweet potato and ham with manchego cheese and she had the pumpkin chili. Both soups were delicious and perfect now that we're finally having some fall weather. The sweet Potato soup was so different from anything I'd ever had before but it was just so yummy. I would absolutely eat it again. I also really enjoyed both sandwiches. I think the meatloaf sliders were my favorite but it was definitely a close call. I really loved the beet relish on the meatloaf sliders. The sweet and tangy flavor was the perfect compliment to the savory meatloaf. The pulled ham though was also so yummy. It was so different from any other ham sandwich I'd ever had and not at all in a bad way. It was like ham sandwich meets pulled pork and I loved it! He molasses aioli was perfect with it also. I can't wait to go back again! The suggested prices are also super reasonable. We did pay a bit more to "pay it forward" but for such a delicious meal it was well worth it! I went into The Table for the first time today. I am ecstatic about their food, so delicious. Prices are more than reasonable. The atmosphere is down home and warm. How could I not have known about this wonderful restaurant?! VEGAN OPTIONS This place is freaking awesome. I haven't been inside yet (Covid-19) but have gotten curb side pick up. With the prices I opened my box and was shocked at how big these portions are!! Stopped to have lunch, as soon as you enter you are made to feel at home. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. OMG...An Ultimate Foodies Must Have!!! This limited menu with perfect sounding food was what brought us into Louisville during a drive past on our long roadtrip from Chicago to Orlando. The ingredients & descriptions were spot on . The sandwiches were packed with flavor profiles that inhanced each experience/bite...ok every bite was an experience!!! As an award winning cook myself, I am picky when I go for "good food" and it's just ok, I just won't eat it. As you can see, we ate EVERYTHING! The smoked chicken sandwich was so good, my husbandis looking forward to burping! Ewe, but true! I had the curry sweet potato burger, and it was the perfect flavors & textures. The pickled veggies were just the right kick of acid. Veggie pumpkin chili was so good too. Now, I have 8 trophies for my 3 different chilies, & their's was excellent! A farm to table atmosphere in a place with a beautiful mission. Now, that being said, we had no idea of that aspect until after we arrived. I have been meaning to eat at the Table since I heard about it and I finally stopped in while exploring Portland during the arts and heritage festival a few weeks ago. The food was AMAZING. We ordered one of everything to share and it was all great. There was an Irish theme that day so we had beef stew, a potato fritter/dumpling and sausage. Everything was incredibly reasonably priced - you'd be asked to pay at least double in NuLu or the Highlands. Everyone was incredibly friendly and was happy to answer questions or offer suggestions. It's no-frills service, but you don't go here for a Michelin starred dining "experience." In a city filled with delicious food, this place stands out. Why? Because of what it is and what it stands for. No one leaves there hungry, even if you walk in the door with $0 in your pocket. Food insecurity and hunger are real issues in Louisville, especially the west end, and The Table is doing what it can to combat the problem. Making sure that anyone who needs healthful, quality food regardless of the ability to pay is a mission I can get behind. What a great concept. Pay what you can. A true gift to our community. The Table serves fresh comfort food at very reasonable prices. We had lunch and each of us ordered different items. We had the grilled cheese which was overflowing with cheese and it had a pumpkin butter on it which made it a little sweet. Very good. Also had the sweet potatoes fries which I really didn't care for. They needed to be cooked longer, not crispy enough for me. Also had a pulled ham and cheese sandwich which was my favorite of the sandwiches and the parmesan fries which were excellent. Last sandwich was the pulled pork and it too was good. We split a piece of oreo cteame pie which was suburb and I really dont like oreos. It is a big area and prices are suggested on the menu. Oay what you can. You can volunteer for a meal or just as an act of generosity. Staff were all friendly and ant tipping goes to feed those who can't pay. On street parking and a very clean well run establishment. It is a very loving and warm place. My meal was ok, it was affordable and filling. I had some disappointment about the food and the service, but I will just let it slide. Well, I am in love with this concept. What you have here is a restaurant offering locally sourced, farm to table food, at a reasonable price, in an area that doesn't have the culinary options and restaurants that you might find in the "hipper" parts of town. They offer several payment methods, operating in the "pay what you can" concept. You can pay the cost of the meal, pay what you can afford, pay with service if you can't afford the meal, or pay it forward with either money or service for those who can't afford their meal. All of the waiters and waitresses are volunteers, and they don't accept any tips, but encourage any tip you may leave to go to the "pay it forward" option. Sounds awesome, right? It is! And here's what makes it even cooler: their food is great. They offer hearty, delicious meals that are locally sourced. They have soups, salads, sandwiches, and sides. You order everything a la carte, but the prices are so reasonable it's hard not to order one of everything. My mom and I got a conglomeration of things: the roasted root salad, potato soup, Parmesan fries, veggie cheesesteak sandwich, and a new salad that they hadn't put on the menu yet (I forget the name!). The mission of this place, which is that everyone deserves a good meal, already had my attention. Let's be honest, most free kitchens have lackluster food, despite the heart being in the right place. Or, pay for your meal plus a little for the next person. Can't pay? No big. Work off your meal by helping at the restaurant. Brilliant and community oriented mentality. (Volunteers are welcomed , too!) My parents and I eagerly visited the bustling Portland restaurant with the mentality of reviewing it as a restaurant, not a mission. We were instantly greeted by a joyful volunteer, explained the structure, and given a table in the industrial-modern room. The menu, you guys!!! The menu is filled to the brim with a few, but all mouthwatering, selections including artful salads, sandwiches, and fabulous desserts. I finally decided on the Philly Cheese steak with sweet potato fries, which also was my dad's choice, and my mom got their salad with root veggies. Although the wait was a little long for our food, it was well worth it. My sweet potato fries were large wedges of crispy, soft centered, seasoned goodness. The Cheese steak was so good and smothered in yummy cheddar, that I ordered one to go for my boyfriend. My mom's salad was absolutely beautiful, topped with fresh citrus and crisps. Honestly, everything was top-notch, and very well priced for any patron who comes in the door. The menu rotates based on what is in season, and what local ingredients are available. You'll never be bored with their offerings, and what a wonderful way to support the revitalization of the area! P.S. One of the volunteers came to every table and gave out fresh daisies. Any place that practices a way of doing business similar to The Table gets a 5 in my book. This is a nice little lunch spot that offers suggested prices but allows you to pay what you can. If you have less than the amount of the food, pay less and volunteer a bit of your time. If you have more than the amount and want to "pay it forward" for the next customer...feel free. They also have a large amount of meeting space in the back of the building. There is a church back there too. This is such a nice fixture for Portland to have in their neighborhood. :) I would like to go back and try more. I was there for a work retreat so I didn't really get the restaurant experience. I did not expect to experience such a high level of customer service. The sweet ladies who served us were friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We practically invited them to sit down and join us for lunch. But really, let's talk food. Such fresh, high quality ingredients and we loved the flavor combinations.
