This place has become an institution in my book, I'm in the area two or three times a year. Inevitably I'm going to end up at Toast on at least one of these visits. Generous portions of standard Breakfast fare at very reasonable prices. Exceptional service! Nice crisp bacon, they served at least 5, maybe 6 excellent strips with my order of the Toast Classic. Appreciated the free refill that came with the Hot Chocolate, as mentioned, service is exceptional. Nice rural feel to this ample sized diner located in the downtown of a quiet mid-sized city. Classic American diner! Not the fanciest place around, but that's kind of the point. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Pretty sure I was the only guest whose name they didn't know. Being a brunch place, I had to order breakfast for lunch! My meal did not disappoint. the Breakfast Manhattan is only $6.95 and includes 2 biscuits, 2 eggs, 2 biscuit size sausage patties and hash browns... all covered in sausage gravy. Delicious and huge serving. More than your money's worth. I've been working in Anderson for almost 2 years. It's a shame I had not tried this place until now. I'll definitely be back. read more

I should have taken a clue from the lack of dinner/lunch reviews. It would seem this restaurant's strength is breakfast. The diner is small, quiet, low key, and no frills. That's what I was looking for and found it. The service was good, and the food came out hot & quick. The soup seemed homemade. The mashed potatoes were instant and the brown gravy was pre-made. I probably should have ordered the white gravy, but was told it was sausage gravy (not sawmill/ pepper gravy). Another reviewer mentioned meatloaf lunch, but I didn't see it on the menu. read more

I meet a group of 4 or 5 other guys at The Toast for breakfast every Thursday morning. I've only tried three of their breakfast offerings (Philadelphia cheesesteak omelet, breakfast Manhattan, and country fried steak) in the six months we have been meeting there. All three are so incredibly delicious that I can't bring myself to try something else. The service is also outstanding. We have the same server (Christy) every week, and she is great. Most weeks she anticipates our arrival and has our table already prepared for us. I also find the portions to be quite generous. I've never left still hungry...and at a reasonable price. The Toast is such a unique restaurant with a diverse menu. There really is an option for everyone. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't start your meal with a huge cinnamon roll (unbeatable). I had a little time to kill before a meeting and this place looked cool. It is an old school diner with a lot of history in a small town. The Good: -It was packed at 11:30 on a Wednesday. Locals must love it and that means something. -The service was friendly. Not slow but not fast. -The breakfast I had was delicious and huge. The menu said omelets were the specialty so I tried one. Sausage and cheese. The Bad: - I love old school dive diners but this place needs updated and cleaned up. There was an unpleasant smell that actually made it hard for me to enjoy my food. The bathroom was in the middle of the dining room and had paper thin doors. The carpet really needs to be replaced. read more

Making this place non-smoking was a HUGE improvement (since Madison County--and the STATE, for that matter--isn't civilized enough to enact any kind of decent non-smoking laws). The food hasn't changed, and is still good--haven't tried the lunch offerings yet, but I love their breakfasts, especially the omelettes. Four stars for my meatloaf lunch today. All of the portions were very generous. I could have easily shared this lunch with another person because I did not finish it (but that did not stop me from ordering dessert). The meatloaf had lots of chopped onions and green peppers, it was juicy & tender-- not at all dry, and the sauce was pretty good (maybe a little too ketchupy). I was surprised how good the mashed potatoes and gravy turned out! If they have peach cobbler a la mode on the menu, I suggest you get an order for the table. We stumbled upon this place while we had an hour to kill before a concert at the Paramount Theatre. There aren't many other options around so we thought how can you go wrong with breakfast food? You cant! Toast was no exception. It was very quiet when we walked in. We were greeted and told to sit where we liked. Soon many other concert goers flooded in and you could tell the one server was overwhelmed. He kept apologizing for the time it was taking to refill coffees and get our food but honestly he was doing an outstanding job! The coffee was so delicious (not your average burnt diner coffee) and the food was outstanding! Everyone in there was raving about it! I had the grilled cheese and my husband has a chicken sandwich.
