I had such a great experience at The Tomato Head, and a huge part of that was our waitress, Meredith. She knows the menu like the back of her hand--seriously, she's tried every combination imaginable and helped us decide between a couple options. Her recommendations were spot on. I ended up getting the Oh Boy half sandwich, and I love that you can order it as a half. I was torn between that and the Tuscan chicken, but I would order the Oh Boy again in a heartbeat. I also had the pasta salad with both ranch and tahini--such a great option because you always want to try more than one dressing! We tried the Southwest salad too, and it was perfect with the chipotle ranch. Another really cool thing is that you can buy their dressings or hummus to go, which I'll definitely be doing next time. I also had a mocktail that was super fresh and felt really clean--kind of like their version of a spicy margarita, and it was delicious. Overall, great food, great options, and amazing service. Not much to look at and nothing unique about it. Everything was clean, place seems to be pretty new. Hostesses were friendly and we got a table for lunch immediately. Food was mediocre. Lamb sausage was nothing special. Tried a vegan pepperoni -- wouldn't recommend. $60+ for two pizzas was an obscene price for the quality and the location. It's Knoxville, not DC. We tried Tomato Head for the first time today and had mixed feelings about the experience. Service was fine as we were greeted promptly and our server was friendly and efficient. Ambience was meh with lousy (loud) acoustics. I could easily hear the crying babies from across the restaurant as well as the conversations from surrounding tables. Our food was fine. I opted for a sandwich and my wife had an appetizer for her meal. We probably would have opted for something more substantial but... The prices for pizza here are outrageous. On the menu there are several 14 inch pizzas that are priced OVER $40!!! Give me a break, I can go down the street and get a 3-course steak dinner for $39.99 at a really nice restaurant. Yes, I know that management will probably respond to this review crying about rising costs. There's just no way to justify a 14 inch pizza that costs close to $50. I'm native Knoxvillian and I don't know when I fell out of my Tomato Head habit, but I'm back! Real food I didn't have to cook is exactly why I eat out. I had a small Oh Boy sandwich on wheat and a cup of tomato soup. It was delicious and surprisingly affordable. I could have spent more at Wendy's. Service was great. We stopped by with a party of 8 before heading downtown. We split into an adult table of 4 and a kid table of 4. The kids thought it was fun because they got to hang out with their friends. The food tasted better than last time this time. The air head is nice and puffy. Once you cut it open it shrinks, but the garlicky flavor is good. I was visiting from out of town and asked someone that lived in Knoxville if they had any food recommendations for lunch. They named this spot right away, so I had to give it a try! I did the 9" make your own pizza option with chicken, red onion and green peppers for take out. What a pleasant surprise! There was a solid cheese pull with every bite, the chicken had a really nice flavor and was super tender and the veggies were delish. My wife and I decided to eat outside on their large, shaded outdoor dining patio. Our server, Christian, was very attentive and efficient throughout our meal. We had one of their draft beers. You can always go right with the Shulz Brau Pilsner. We shared one of their 9" pizzas with sundried tomatoes and lamb sausage. Two concerns were that it took a really long time to get the pizza, and it was expensive ($20 for a 9" pizza!). However, the pizza was excellent. A lot of toppings and a great crust. Still looking for a good pizza in Knoxville. The Tomato Head has great reviews on Yelp so had to try. Got a yuppie/woke vibe from pictures of the atmosphere I had seen. It took me two years to try this place because of this preconception. It was all women working there when I finally went. The service was very good. The waitress came and checked on me three or four times during my meal. I went during lunch. For lunch you have the option of choosing specialty slices. For the price point of seven dollars and upwards the slices are not big enough. The dough was OK. Nice and crisp. Based on my slice, I think they might be overloading the toppings to make up for an exceptionally small slice. This throws off the flavor balance of a good pizza slice. I also had a calzone. I ordered a ham and onion calzone. The dough on that tasted more like a bread than what a good calzone would taste like. It was overloaded with onions, more than you'd expect. The ricotta was more dry and clumpier than you would expect. If there was mozzarella in it, it was barely noticeable. If I were to describe my calzone, it would be an onion bread with a little bit of clumpy ricotta. It wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't call it a calzone. The sauce on the side was good. I also had an ice tea. Their ice was very good. I would come here if you are looking for good service and sandwiches. If you are looking for a good traditional pizza, this ain't it. read more

The cocktail was balanced and very pleasantly tart. We were seated and ordered the hummus plate, a small chef salad, and an oh boy sandwich. First, I had this veggie burger recently. It was quite good. Would probably give a 4 star. This time, I have never had something fall apart like this did. I eventually received a fork to move on after the first bite. What is remarkable is how difficult it was to eat even with a fork. Really disappointing. Perhaps the simplest endorsement is best when it comes to The Tomato Head (on Kingston Pike, near West Town Mall): my wife and I always always always eat there, twice a year, for both our anniversaries (first date, and wedding day). I was taken here by a local and couldn't believe such a great menu was available. I'm from SoCal and I have food allergies so it can be hard to dine in places. I had a hard time deciding between all the vegan and gluten free options - it all looked so good! The food was some of the tastiest of our trip and the gluten free bread is homemade and some of the best gluten free bread I've ever had. The service was very good and the food came out accurately. So, the food is awesome. Fresh, locally sourced, scratch made with love, without a doubt. Flavors layer and then linger on the palate...really good food. I have always been pleased and occasionally impressed. Cheap food ain't good. Good food ain't cheap. Tomato Head is a great place to run up a $50-$60 tab (2 adults, 2 kids, reasonable lunch with a couple of sodas). That's ok as long as you recognize the quality that's in the food...just be prepared for the sticker. Downside: Service always lets me down. Every time. Without a doubt. I always find servers to be disinterested and, often, just staff is no more engaging. Honestly, I occasionally sense a general irritation from staff, seemingly just from having to be at work. I can't imagine it's really that way but I ever feel particularly welcome there. So I enjoy TH. Wonderful food. Little pricey but that drives quality.
