Might help everyone to be aware these are retail franchises. I've done business with The UPS Store in Pleasant Hill for over a decade now, but recently relocated to Alameda and got my mailbox here. I've also used their printing, shipping, and drop-off services over the past six months since my arrival. In reading some of the reviews, a few things become apparent: 1. There's been a significant management change--for the good--since a year ago. Odessa runs the place today, along with Jo and others, and they are nothing less than smiling, multitasking, customer-focused forces of nature. I cannot speak to who ran things before; I just know Odessa runs for her customers...literally. 2. In scrutinizing some of the more critical prior reviewers, a peek at their histories reveals some tend only to post negative reviews (lots of "ones"; seldom "fives"). This may be because they feel more inclined to warn than praise, but it is worth noting. 3. There seems some degree of misunderstanding just exactly what a UPS Store is, how it operates, and that they are indeed a for-profit entity. And, yes, they are under contract to abide by their franchise rules, which do include things like those $1 handling fees, etc. [I recall when the owner of my previous UPS Store explained the company enacted a policy change where they would no longer supply blank (free) UPS shipping labels for drop shipments...but to be clear, they do still accept these shipments.] Along those lines, how could they possibly keep their doors open if they accept, process, and outbound shipments with zero compensation for themselves? If customers want free service, they can go to their local US Post Office, or official UPS terminal. UPS Store is just that...a *store* which renders services for fees. So, if you haven't been in for a while, and you can accept the speed and convenience of a fee-for-service business model, you owe it to yourself to stop in and give Odessa, Jo, and the others a second chance. As for me, you'll never find me standing 30-deep in the line at the Post Office. No thank you. read more

I have been trying to get notary services, yet every time I go I, the notary says she cannot sign. I ask why and she gives a vague response that does not explain why she cannot do it. Once she said she cannot sign originals, another time she said she cannot do it if all signers are there at the same time, even if it is arranged for her to be the notary for each signer. The biggest issue I have with the last one is about a week or so before I went in, I called explained that I wanted to sign my portion, have it notarized, put that form in a box I have at this location and have the second signer come in, sign and put the completed form back in the box to pick up.....the UPS notary said this would be fine. I go in today and now it's "both parties have to be here at the same time." Well I read the 2020 California Public Notary Handbook from the notary.cdn.sos.ca.gov website which states that if she is going to notarize a deed or trust, (aka "the original" she said she couldn't notarize, on page 9 and 29 of the handbook) the only additional thing needed was a finger print. And with Regards to "being their at the same time" that fell under the Jurat (her explanation not mine, page 12 for those still reading) all it says is that the signer and the notary need to be in person, NOT all signers at once! If both signers appear in front of this notary with proper identification it doesn't matter if the signers are together it matters that the notary and each sign are together. Look if you are going to offer a service, offer it, but understand what service you're offering and how to provide said service! If your a notary, you need to understand the requirements and not make up your own because you don't understand how to do your job! Lastly if she provided any level of customer service, I likely wouldn't be so irritated with her ignorance! But every time I'm in there, EVERY SINGLE time, regardless of what service I need she can never seem to do anything for you....Maybe if your dropping off or picking up packages this place is fine, if you need ANYTHING ELSE, I'd try the FedEx store two blocks up. I will definitely be cancelling my mailbox with this location. read more

For some reason seems like they don't want returns. Came here three times in a week to return amazon stuff. First time, they were over capacity not taking returns. Came two days later on a Friday and said the system was down and not taking returns from amazon. Fine. Ok. Came today, and same thing. They were over capacity again and not taking packages due to capacity. 1) if your system was down Friday, why is there a backlog of pickups? 2) the guy in front of me was deciding for next day shipping or two day shipping for a package, which he was paying for at the store. This UPS Store will make you want to pull your hair out! They will randomly be full and not accepting any new packages so you have to turn around and go home and try a different day. Today they randomly closed at 4:30 p.m. so yet again I have to go back home and come back a different day. Do yourself a favor and go to a different one if you can. read more

They charge $5 to print a label from Amazon plus $.25 a page. That's completely ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and find a different UPS store. There are plenty of them. read more

We had a sticky situation with needing to have a name changed on our mailbox. The employee was very patient and explained clearly what we needed to show her. She processed the request easily and with a smile. This small team works quickly to get people in & out, especially since there is usually a line outside waiting - in order to abide by the 3 person rule in place right now. read more

I stopped by to drop a package off at 8:40am and it was closed, completely dark with no one outside. It was supposed to open at 8am. There was no sign on the window to say otherwise. read more

When business owners adopt a " hands off " way of doing business and leaving it up to incompetent , nonchalant , care free people such as Mr Shane the supervisor to run a once promising business like this one things will always go south. This young man " Mr Shane " needs a basic coarse in customer service and how to be respectful to his seniors. Its a total shame what this place has come to . Mr Shane the supervisor made a mistake on my USPS Postage and also over charged me by 100% / double the price of what it would have cost at the post office. The postage was never used and my money was never refunded. Base on the situation I went to the post office and re-purchased the same postage for half the cost. To be over charged is not good, but to be dismissed and disrespected on top of been overcharged is the ultimate. Mr Terence seems to be a younger and new employee however with the sub par service and non productive culture been displayed by the supervisor . Mr Terence will soon be contaminated and be of no use to the mission of taking this business ahead . The owner needs to take a serious look at the team and do some pruning . read more

This is an awful UPS store. Every time I go in, the employees are rude and condescending. Come on, man you work at a UPS store, get over yourself. They charge extra for everything. Today, it was $1 to put a small piece of tape on my amazon return bag. When I come here, it is because I'm staying on our boat where I don't have a printer. If I print a return label at this store, they charge for use of the computer plus each page I print. On the door it says something like "owned and operated by a member of your community". Well, this member doesn't act the part. It's a sharp contrast to the UPS store I go to in Santa Cruz where I always leave with a smile on my face. This place is like a trip to the DMV. You can expect it to be slow, painful, and probably the worst part of your day. You expect the staff to be consistently unhelpful, uneducated in basic cashiering, and uninterested. You expect to be nickel and dimed and to have whatever you need go as slowly as possible. I come here out of desperation to ship packages and print pages because it is close but I always regret it and about 40% something goes wrong in the process. She tells me to grab a bubble mailer , I did $12.00. Then the manger tells her to not seal it ,rather bend it over until lable is ready. I say I want it there Monday or Tuesday , what is the cost? Manager comes over and says LOUDLY & RUDELY ," 1st off we aren't guaranteeing the delivery ,Monday OR. Tuesday and if it doesn't make it , NO REFUNDS . Then she tells me for Tuesday it's $96.00 !!!! WTAF ????. The man behind me who has a box there , says under his breath " USPS " I said " are they open on Saturday ? " Yes " he responded . So no I grab my item out of bag , and the manager says " ok but I have to charge you for the mailer bag" I said " NO YOU DONT ! and you shouldn't have told her to bend it before giving me the cost , and I walked out.. I went to my normal FED EX ! A- the same bags , EXACT bags are $2.29 , the cost Monday $ 46 Tuesday $24. GUARANTEED !!!And the service was great. UPS Store does notary , again for an astronomical cost, GO TO ISLAND NOTARY ON PARK ! they are a fraction of the cost . They also GAVE ME THE MAILER & ADDED AN EXTRA ONE TO PROTECT IT, NO CHARGE. I used to love the friendly service, and fast, convenient location, but over the past 8 months something has been happening internally, I believe. The service has degraded into mass confusion, and the management and staff turnover has increased so I never even know the staff's names any more- new face every single time I walk in. There are always long lines, and the staff seem to be doing their best, but DEFINITELY NOT a friendly atmosphere to spend 20 minutes in, while idly waiting in line on my 30 minute lunch break! There are much better, and cheaper options around the corner at FedEx, and if you must use UPS, go out to Bay Farm Island- this store is a disaster for customer service. When I talked to the big boss Stephanie Islas, who is the manager over many of the franchise stores, I told her about my sister's long wait time, rude or nonexistant customer service, and told her how much this store has degraded in recent months. She reflected my observations and was rude, curt, and raised her voice a lot to me- telling me if I didn't like it I could find some other place to ship packages. Kind of telling that a manager over several stores adopts that attitude in direct conversation with long-time customers, and then you see it on a daily basis in the staff's attitudes. read more

My mother has had a box here for years. Great staff. Most of the time. I understand it's the holidays, and you probably want to hate your life because you work at a shipping store, during the holidays..... That being said, the wonderful ladies here have always been great! (I've only had interactions with people of the female persuasion up until the past couple of visits) The kid with the last name Lee, well it's like he missed the part of the training video where part of your job is being attentive to the client. Even a simple thing like a smile and maybe some acknowledgement that he has just walked away from you mid sentence. It's almost like dealing with a teenager. Might as well be rolling his eyes and scoffing. At least that's how I feel when I get done interacting with him. Maybe there is something deeper. Chip on the shoulder. Maybe he hasn't warmed to me. Maybe he should be a barista in a quaint cafe. Attitude would fit right in there. Nah, these are common courtesy issues. Most likely societal. Give him the benefit of the doubt. So back to this hole in the wall. The people are generally nice. It is a corporate arm, so don't expect anyone to bend over backwards to help you, it's just a J-O-B to them. Lots of fiddly paperwork stuff. ID's and signing of forms. I think I'll buy my labels online even if I have to pay more because I don't know how much it weighs. Slap the label and drop it off. (Did you know you can pay $2 to use their tape? Tidbit) It's really too bad I feel the need to write this. It's like being a jerk to your waiter, don't expect your food to come out unsullied. Bears the question then, how many packages or pieces of mail will they 'lose' of mine or my mothers? See how professional these folks can be from this point on. read more

Not all UPS Stores are created equal and here's why... I come here mainly to drop off packages. One thing I do always ask for is receipt. Most UPS stores will hand one out (except the Lafayette UPS Store and they say it with an attitude). This one is no different. Customer service is always friendly. One time, I even witness them assisting someone else with packaging using their own tape. Most shipping stores will tell you to buy one (beware of Jack London Mail --they are a cheap ass and bitchy too). This UPS store gets a thumbs up from me. read more

A while back I was going to let my mailbox contract run out and take my business elsewhere, due to a smug and ineffective staff at this store. I dreaded having to interact with them and therefore went in as little as possible, sometimes letting my mail pile up. Then one day a new face introduced herself as Odessa, the new manager. Since that day, she has greeted me (and all her other regulars) by name every single time I walked through the doors. Her staff is friendly, helpful and clearly respect each other. When a very important package wasn't delivered on time (UPS delivery apparently didn't realize their own store was open on a bank holiday, really?), She made some calls, tracked it down and made sure it was available for me to pick up at the nearby distribution center that day. Today, walking through these doors feels like a small-town business where everyone knows each other and they really care. Needless to say I renewed my mailbox. read more

We wish I saw the rating prior. We had a customer ship to this store for a thank you to a group of nurses that are working nearby and staying in an AirBnb while they are on the front lines of this pandemic. When she called to check on status, they very rudely said that they don't accept UPS packages unless you own a box. Having never heard of this before, we called and were informed that they WOULD accept it but there would be a fee for holding. So we shipped. We were then notified that the package was refused. When we called, the manager was very abrupt and said "It's my store- my rules!" When we asked why we were told that there would be a fee to hold it the previous day, she replied, "No idea who said that, but my store my rules." and hung up. This is the single worst UPS store (any store) I have ever dealt with. When I finally went on Yelp and looked at the other one star ratings, I kicked myself. Should have done that first. They actually held a package I had sent to the store and would not give it to me unless I signed up for some ransom like service for $40. Talk about extortion. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this store and the manager. When we went to pick up the package, first we were told that it was not there. But the tracking information showed it had been delivered. Then after complaining, the package miraculously appeared the next day, BUT THEY WOULD NOT RELEASE IT. They insisted we sign-up for a $40 service fee in order to be able to collect the package. They actually returned it to sender because we would not pay the extortion fee. These people should all be fired. I have already filed a complaint with UPS corporate. I am going to track down the owners of this business and voice my complaint personally. Just incredibly poor service. I don't have words to express how bad it was. UPS should revoke their franchise. read more

I have been coming to this store for 5 years now and I feel something should be done for the great people that work there. Recently I found out that they work over time without overtime pay, no sick leave and no raises. The owner has many of these stores and has been making a lot of money, thanks to the hard work of his employees. They have been quitting because of the work condition. It's UPS. You go in, do what you have to do, get out and get on with your life. I came here to get the live scan fingerprint for licensing reasons, and seriously though, who would've thought it would be $86 to get your fingerprint?! I might as well have went to the police station, but I didn't have time to waste, so I just went with it. Live scan is pretty cool, no ink, no mess, just digital image of your fingerprints. Pretty cool, right? Yeah, I'd like to think so (minus the fees for it of course). But customer service-wise, I'd have to say they did a mighty-fine job. They also have made up rules and policies that they scribble onto official documents. They don't try to help you solve your problem at all, and don't care about customer privacy including data. "Paying patrons", I believe, would greatly appreciate getting "Group texts" or "Group emails" (i.e., similar to the store's billing reminders) when employees find it necessary to close early. 1 Star is too much of a compliment for the women that are working in this location on Monday February 24th at 1215 in the afternoon. I called an hour prior asking if ink fingerprints were done at this location. They lady on the phone told me yes come before 4pm. I'm here at 1215pm and they are telling me to come back between 2-5pm because they are going on lunch. I live in Oakland, the closest location to me is this one or in Hayward. I've owned a box for several years now and have had nothing but outstanding service from all staff members. Very courteous, helpful and will go out of there way to assist with last minute errands for irresponsible people like myself that wait till the last minute to do important post office stuff. What is helpful is that there is a US PO at Raley's across the parking lot as well. I haven't had to use it much, but it's a good convenience for non-UPS stuff and for sending 1st class mail/'packages. All in all, the staff gets an A+ and the fees are reasonable for what you get. They always remember my name and even my box number. Sometimes there is a long line, and one of them will grab my mail for me so I don't have to wait because I lost my box key. Thanks! read more

This store (or company) is a huge rip off. I'm trying to send a shoebox sized package to AK and I was told for the slowest shopping method (ground) that I'd have to pay $60! Also, my box was packaged and ready to go and they make you fill out this long package slip with information that is already on the box. What a waste of time, no thanks! read more

I went to have notary services done at 5:30 and even though they had 3 people working and no customers in the store they refused to provide notary services because they were "short handed". I use notary services quite a bit and normally ups stores provide a great service but not this location. read more

I ordered my Christmas gifts online which was divided into two separate shipments. The first package was received as normal via this same UPS store. But I had to go there multiple times to get my 2nd package of the order. Before I went in there today, I called a couple of days ago and the store manager said the package was there and asked me to come in any time to pick it up. I went in there to pick it up today after 1pm. The store manager said they had the package but couldn't release the it to me unless I sign up for 1 year of UPS service for $35, plus $5 transaction fee!! I was totally pissed. Why should I pay for something that I don't need just to claim my package that I have already paid for? Why can't the store sort it out with their affiliate business partners about whichever error whoever might have made? I did not have all the necessary details or knowledge to deal with your order fulfillment partners and process! And why should I bear the cost of somebody else's mistake by paying something unnecessary? But no, the store manager showed no sympathy - I was given the blunt take it (for $35 + 5 transaction fee) or leave it (forfeit my ordered/paid merchandise.) offer! Christmas plan is ruined. Avoid this place as it messes up with customer's packages and the owner and personnel there have zero respect of customer needs/rights. read more

Whereas the basic service I pay for (a mailbox) is mundane enough, Mayra and Reina behind the counter could not be more helpful or cheerful - definitely the gold standard in customer service. I've had nothing but great service from this store. In particular, Erika has been amazing. We have a mailbox here and have all of our packages delivered here. They always greet us when we come in and have everything ready for us. I've had a couple of things notarized here, and that's been easy as well. I'm not sure why people are leaving negative reviews. It's a service business, and there will always be people that are disgruntled, but they need to separate not liking the rules from dumping on the employees. This place has gone down hill over the years while their prices continue to grow. They rarely, if ever, check in your package deliveries until the day after they are delivered. In other words, add at least a day to your expected delivery date. And even then, they no longer put your delivery notices in your mail box. Instead, you have to wait for them to shuffle through the pile of notices, while crossing your fingers that they haven't lost yours. Furthermore, they no longer offer discounts when you pay for a full year. And not only do they charge for everything but their prices are shockingly exorbitant. For example, a $2 print job at the local print shop costs $25 at this UPS store. Very bizarre. As for their staff? Some of their staff are great. Very friendly and helpful. Others? Not so much. I highly suspect they're not paying their staff much, as they seem to have an extremely high churn rate. read more
