Was there for private event. Having done some event planning in my life. I feel that they should have spread the tables around a bit. It was a large room, and all the table were on one side of the room. Could have easily spread the table apart a bit and not affect the buffet line. The food was not gourmet, but it was not bad. Actually it was pretty good. I don't live in NJ any more , so I'll probably not visit again. But if you live in town, give it a try. read more

3.5 stars When The Village Inn opened in Wayne several years ago, it was known as "Mark's Village Inn". I am not sure if the chef or ownership changed with the name, but I noticed that my visits after the modification were not quite as delicious. The restaurant seemed much more like fine dining initially, and more like a nicer pub now. There was a front deck with a large television showing sports, and I heard the place had an active happy hour scene. Despite its newer, more casual nature, my last two experiences were for large celebrations. I attended a baby shower there about five years ago and an engagement party recently. The engagement event was held in their back party room, which was a good size and completely separate from its main dining room. The event included an open bar, but there was not one in the private space, so we had to go into the main bar, which was fine but is worth noting. In terms of the service, it was efficient without being rushed, and the team seemed mainly on top of things. However, one of the coffee mugs on my table had a lipstick stain on it. The food was served as a buffet that was laid out in a spacious way that easily allowed for attendees to move down the line and make their selections. The food chosen by the hosts included: -Make your own garden salad from mixed greens, black olives, cucumbers, shredded carrots, tomatoes, onions -Bowtie Vodka -Tortellini Carbonara -Rice Pilaf -Steamed Vegetables with garlic and herbs -Salmon with Lobster Cream sauce -Steak with mushrooms in gravy -Fresh sliced Italian bread I did not try the pasta, but the rice was so nutty and flavorful. The salmon and steak were also excellent. The vegetables and salad were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. There were also assorted cookies, double chocolate cupcakes, and a layer cake with vanilla pudding inside for dessert, though I was not sure if those had been provided by the restaurant. The sweets were paired with carafes of coffee that were dropped off at each table. The coffee was, sadly, pretty awful. It was burnt and watery, rather than rich and bold. My granddaughters baptism was held there this past Sunday. The room was great but the 9 tables my daughter requested were all set for 10 people yet there were 66 total attending! And there was nowhere to put the extra chairs other than line them against the walls. So we had to scramble to reset the tables as guests were arriving. Not off to a good start! Food was decent except the fried calamari was not good! When the restaurant was booked, John (owner?) agreed to change the alcohol package from $9pp for carafes of wine and pitcher of (warm) beer to just carafes of wine for $9 each. Well guess what, he didn't hold up to that agreement and my daughter was charged $9pp for alcohol. There were so many people that didn't drink, especially since it was a 12pm party. So yes I am the weirdo who goes to an Italian restaurant and has a wedge salad. But here's the thing. I love a wedge salad, and rarely do you see a wedge salad on a menu. And rarely is it done well when it is on the menu. It's a simple affair and it requires crisp fresh lettuce, tasty bacon, and fresh blue cheese. This one was well done. I very much enjoyed it. We split the fried calamari as an appetizer. It was the large ring frozen kind but it still hit the spot as much as any deep fried appy does. All in all we enjoyed the meal. read more

This was our first time back since the renovation. When we walked in we knew it was not going to be the same. It's used to feel cozy and warm. It was a charming Italian restaurant that had a bar and the food was good. Now it's clearly a bar that is trying to serve food. (Bad food) Before we ordered you could hear all the people at the bar talking and yelling F this F that. We tried ignored it and decided we would order something "safe". For apps we ordered the French Onion soup and the pretzel with cheese dip. The soup and pretzel were good the cheese dip well not so much. Who charges $14 for a pretzel. I guess a better question is why did I pay $14 for a pretzel. We both ordered the BLT burgers with fries for our meal they were only $1.00 more than the pretzel (I guess that should've been a warning). They brought the burgers to the table and upon upon inspection you could tell that the tomato and pickle were old. The fries tasted like they were cooked in VERY old oil and the burger was well below average. I am speechless that they can't serve a good burger and fries with fresh ingredients. I was here today for a baby shower. They had a great layout of food! Calamari, bruschetta, and tomato/cheese as apps, salad followed by penne vodka, the main meal, and then fruit bowls. The penne vodka was great! I ordered the steak which said it came with mushroom sauce but there were no mushrooms. Maybe it was in the sauce? The steak was tough, not too tasty but not horrible. Other guests were saying the chicken franchise was great! They didn't have ingredients to make a skinny margarita at the bar but you have to remember it's a typical bar and that is expected for the casual place it is. Having been here several times in the past and having a 50th surprise party here we were looking forward to eating here again. Place was remodeled a bit and does look very nice that's why it's getting 2 stars. They changed the menu and it's definitely not anything like it used to be. It was bigger with a variety of choices now it's smaller and has a very bar menu feeling. From the start I could just tell it wasn't going to be a good experience. The server was very nice and did try hard but was completely inexperienced and couldn't answer not one question we had. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria and she wasn't sure if we could. She had to ask. Finally it shows up. It was ok. We see other tables with bread so we ask for bread since they didn't bring any. They bring it. Now we ask for butter because they forgot it. We order a few appetizers and salads that show up and we're just ok. To even try them we had to ask for silverware because there was none on the table. I ordered the cowboy steak for dinner. I ask if it's a ribeye- she has to ask. Yes it's a bone in rib-eye. Perfect please cook it black and blue. What's that. I will have to ask. She comes back out and says the chef knows how to cook it like that but would rather I order something else for fear it comes out wrong and I send it back. Omg really. What chef says that. Come on. Needless to say when it comes out it's not black and blue and there is no bone. $38 for a below average steak. I mean can you be more wrong. 2 others in our group ordered the ribs. They were definitely cooked days before and just heated up and drowned in sauce to hide the dryness of them. Another had the mahi-mahi. Dry and flavorless. It just goes on. Pirogies ordered by someone else were average at best. We finished up had a quick coffee and no dessert for fear we would be disappointed again and we leave. It's a shame because we used to like it here but sorry to say we will not be back. He needs to train everyone in the place actually how to do their jobs. Even the runners need help. When they brought out our entrees the appetizer plates were still on the table and they actually stood there with our plates looking at us and had no idea what to do. Not impressed by the food or service at The Village Inn. I say outside with a friend which is a small little deck patio. Nachos were ok, I can name a dozen places where they are better. There wasn't much meat and they weren't plated nicely either. Margarita pizza was super disappointing. I think the picture says it all. The pork chop dinner was lacking flavors. The service was pretty slow for it not being very busy. Also the beers on tap were served in a small plastic cup which I didn't like. Plenty of better places in Wayne to visit. read more

Giving a 5 star here. Haven't been here in a few years, so my wife were looking to stop and have a libation or two on a Saturday afternoon. We like to try different spots, so I accessed my memory banks and we took the 10 minute drive to Wayne. Village in is tucked away off Valley Road, been there for years. Walked in to front bar area and greeted very warmly by Dave the bartender. Dave gets an A+ for being personable, professional, and a great mixologist. Incredibly friendly too. He's exactly the type of person you want making a first impression! My wife had Tito's Vodka martini. The have Tito's on tap so bonus. I had a snakebite with Angry Orchard cider and Guinness. Dave wasn't familiar (it's not an Irish pub) but I explained and he made a couple great ones. We decided to try steamed clams and stuffed meatball apps while we sat at the bar. My wife loves clams, she said that the butter served with them was one of the best accoutrements she'd ever tasted. The meatballs were really good and perfect for sharing. Tucked in a corner of Wayne which I've never before visited despite having resided in Wayne for 15 years. A friend had a Groupon and asked us to join. Entrance and bar area seem nice and appears bigger than it actually is (large wall mirror). Bar seemed to have a decent mixed crowd. Greeted by a friendly hostess and seated immediately. Waitress was pleasant, helpful and attentive. Olive bread and dipping oils were tasty. Martinis from the bar were good; liked the small shakers which offered a top off after sipping. Food was good - salad was good but was missing the nuts advertised on the menu. Tasty French Onion soup. Soft shell crabs deep fried and tasty, although the oil may not have been hot enough as they seemed a bit oily. Other table guests had good dishes too (see photos). Everything was solid but none were outstanding. Deserts were good - notable were the mini jelly donuts, served warm. Cappuccino was extra weak. The waitress re-did them without a shrug but while better, still weak. Decor needs a serious refresh. Rustic is cool but rustic and off white is odd. Convenient if you live in Wayne but wouldn't travel from afar to visit. Local Wayne folks should give it a try. read more

We really expected so much better from this restaurant based on their Website description and its location. Especially since they suggest/recommend reservations and that you dress accordingly, specifically for dinner. We dined during their lunch hours. They offer a limited lunch menu and not much in the way of substitutions. The atmosphere is very nice. We chose to sit in the dining area instead of the bar area. Although our/the only Waitress/Bartender was busy between the Bar area and the dining area, she was very friendly, welcoming and attentive (to us anyway)! The Baby Back Ribs (with like 15 french fries) were kinda on the short/small side, way to lightly sauced, tasted a bit like they were freezer burned or just old, and on the dry and overcooked side, especially for $22.00. The cheeseburger and the Meatball Parmesan hero were fairly priced and of good quality, for $8.00 ea. The $8.00 Lobster Bisque soup, in basically a big cup, was not worth it for the size, quality and the invisible/non-existent lobster. The French Onion Soup was tasty but we feel also was a bit overpriced at $7.00, for again, basically a large cup. We feel the owner/partner who was hanging out, solely at the bar, should have come around to the Only Two tables of patrons to at least say "Hello" or "Happy New Year". Also note worthy: There is plenty of free parking in their lot, but they really need to clean outside their restaurant. The entire length of their wheelchair ramp was littered with broken/fallen tree branches and leaves and cigarette butts. There were Many Full Ash Trays on the outside tables And On the hand rails, and there was a complete Mussel shell on the ramp! Visited this place after a long absence, but in the past was always above average. Last night hopefully was just an off-night but the service and food were terrible. Arrived at 615 and walked out at 715. In that time we saw our waitress just 3 times. We couldn't get refills on our drinks and the rice ball they served me was ice cold in the middle. I couldn't complain because the waitress was non-existent and the rest of the staff appeared to be afraid of her, and wouldn't help us. We Went to this restaurant this past sat on a recommendation from a friend and we were not disappointed. Called ahead hours before for a table of 4 at 7:30 and I was accommodated. We ended up arriving a few minutes early and were seated immediately. The menu was full of specials from appetizers to desserts and I wanted to order most of them. We ended up getting the meatballs, sesame chicken and torpedo shrimp. I have to say they were all delicious and the portions were much bigger than average. The meatballs were so delicious I could have just eaten them alone, but I tried both other apps that were also very good. Our waitress was so busy with all the tables, but handled every one like a pro. She was super friendly and never lacked attention to detail. The owner Chef John was constantly walking around to make sure everything was right and helped answering any questions on the menu for us and others that inquired. House salads arrived a short time later and they were just very tasty. Fresh greens topped with a nice light dressing. The food is ALWAYS a treat at this local haunt. It's like NYC fine dining close to home. Contemporary American cuisine with a seasonal flare. The Asian Salmon with Hoisin sauce is my favorite every time. And don't skip dessert, which is plated beautifully, as are all their dishes. I highly recommend this place! read more

Back in t he day The Village Inn was a wonderful restaurant. The owner , John Martino ( a Culinary Institute of America trained chef) apparently spent his 3 PPP loans on other things . Knowing several restaurant owners who received them I guess John got about $500,000 in forgivable loans Was that his new white Porche Macan in the lot ?..... Right away there were several telltale signs that wasn't going to be a good experience . A NJ Lottery Quick Draw kiosk greeted us as we entered the hostess area. My husband and I sat at a high top in the bar near the new sliding windows overlooking the new deck. We chose the bar because the dining room was noisy. Our waitress ( I wish I got her name ) came and took out drink order and handed us paper menus . They were dog eared but not dirty . Drinks arrived and my husband asked if there were specials because he looked at the website . He was told "Since covid, the menu is pared down". We ordered salads. When an Item stated has a certain produce I would expect it. On a Caesar salad shaved Parmesan is not grated cheese. What ever pre grated cheese was sprinkled on my salad was tasteless. The croutons are also packaged . Not the best but provided texture. Hubs got a wedge salad . It was adequate for him. Entrees were scattered all over the place. Who ever printed the menu did not take the time to group like entrees together. Not a big deal breaker details matter. I ordered blackened Shrimp tacos waitress said they were her favorite . Hubs got the Ultimate BLT burger, special sauce on the side because the waitress couldn't tell us what it was because it was "that special". Thing looked promising at this point. I ignored the Blue Moon condiment basket placed on the table and the plastic sticky salt and pepper shakers placed on the table. Usually it is used outside ,but ok . Food arrived and it looked okay. Hubs tasted the special sauce and pushed it aside. I tasted and found it to be "old" tasting . Mayonnaise based with possibly some blackening spices and chopped garlic. I really couldn't tell because the sauce probably was made Tuesday and sat in a dirty squeeze bottle, un refrigerated for hours during service. A burger is a burger but the Hawaiian bun was cold. Like just removed from the refrigerator cold. My blacked shrimp tacos were disappointing . A while they were seasoned they were not blackened. You can't because the size shrimp used would over cook if blackened WHO USES SALAD SHRIMP ON AN ENTREE if it isn't a shrimp salad . I did eat one to notice there was no avocado as stated . The waitress returned. I told her I was disappointed because you do not use salad shrimp on tacos. She took it away told the owner (John) who was hanging behind the bar took it off the bill and bought me another menu. The owner looked at our table several times but never came over to make it right, apologize, or recommend something else. I did not order a replacement. I did get a club soda which tasted musty. The heads on the dispensing guns need to be cleaned and possibly the lines need to be blown out too. We paid the bill and left the appropriate tip . Our waitress was extremely apologetic every time she came over, which was good ,but the owner would have been better. I pulled her over as we left and thanked her for her attention but the owner John is a jerk. He should have come to out table. This is what an owner does. I guess his regulars do not mind the crappy food. They mostly just drink and play "Quick Draw" another bad sign this place has gone down hill. I do not expect John will reply to this review. While he proudly displays his CIA diploma , it does not show at his restaurant. There is only one 5 star review since 2020. I hosted my Cousins Bridal Shower here and it was an amazing experience! The food was delicious, the wait staff was extremely helpful and very friendly, and everyone who attended the party raved about how great of a time they had. In addition the banquet room was private and beautiful. There was a large variety of food, 2 pasta dishes, chicken, salmon, steak, salad, dessert and appetizers! I am not from the area so before booking here I visited serval other venues and researched at least 20 other restaurants. I am beyond pleased with The Village Inn and am so happy we decided to book here. If I ever need to book a party another party in North Jersey I will be going back to the Village Inn. We went here for the second time (GroupOn) and I really do like this place. The atmosphere 'takes you back'... kinda old and rustic. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was very good too. Saturday my appetizers included a Sushi Pizza, with a rice crust, first time for this special and surprisingly found it much better than expected. Next up was Torpedo Shrimp that I normally won't order when fried but exception made and enjoyed. Last was large shrimp cocktail as the finisher, plump and fresh. I purchased a groupon online a few months ago and since then have been coming back. My first experience was excellent, but since then it has only gone downhill. I ordered the Quattro Formaggi Agnolotti since it was absolutely delicious and in such a small span on time the quality has gone down. It's a small, mom and pop restaurant, that has a very homey atmosphere. And with this they have a very outdated restaurant and a staff that's not the best in terms of customer service. Compete with someone to see who gets the most compliments! LOL 3. Find a constructive way to get your anger out if the place really stunk as opposed to burning it down in the middle of the night! LMAO But yelp there is something about you that I REALLY DON'T LOVE AND REALLY DESPISE! You need to allow for half star ratings! It's driving me crazy. This place is a textbook example of 3 and a half stars. It's better than "A-ok" but it doesn't quite reach the status of "Yay I'm a fan". I am in a state of curmudgeonly critic limbo! What do I do? Well... My heart tells me to go with 4 stars but my mind says 3 stars. For this review, the mind wins. It's fall short in some areas that my mind cannot forgive. Here's the breakdown Food: 3 and a half stars: For our appetizer, my girlfriend had the baked brie while I had the polenta with sausage Bolognese The polenta was a solid textbook dish. The polenta was deep fried producing a nice textural contrast between the soft polenta on the inside and the crispiness on the outside. It was a good solid dish but not a homerun. It could have used a bit more seasoning and lacked the internal creaminess one looks for in polenta The sausage Bolognese was the star of this dish. It was very tasty served in a simple marinara sauce that worked well with the polenta. It accomplished what a sauce is supposed to do. Compliment the dish without overpowering it. I tried my girlfriend's baked brie in a raspberry sauce. It was tasty but she makes a dish similar to this that is better. The baked brie had a croissant like consistency but I didn't really feel that the brie was the highlight of the dish. It tasted like a store bought croissant with a little cheese in it. Nothing in the dish really jumped out except the raspberry sauce. It was really sweet but really good. For our entrees I had the Potato crusted sea bass in a dijonaise sauce while my girlfriend had the filet mignon. The Sea bass for me was good but the dish didn't really come as advertised. I was expecting a potato crust much like one thinks of panko breading . Instead, the "potato crust" was just a bunch of French fried onions on top of the sea bass. Not cool and definite false advertising. Very disappointing. However the dish redeemed itself once I tasted the sea bass. The fish was prepared perfectly, fall apart flaky and just enough seasoning without overpowering it. Plus it was a good portion size. (Size does matter LOL) The mashed potatoes that came with it were quite good. Nice creamy texture with just enough butter to make your heart stop but not so much where your heart stops permanently. Excellent accompaniment The haricot verts (Green beans) that came with it were also really good. Had a good snap and crunch that worked well with the other components on the dish. Very pleased with it. I sampled my girlfriend's filet mignon with shitake mashed potatoes. It was good but again not a home run. You could definitely taste the Madeira gravy which I felt overpowered the dish a bit too much. The shitake mashed potatoes were good but I don't think the combination of the two made sense. They should have been served separately. When a fleur-de-lis pattern is in the raspberry sauce in both the appetizer and dessert that says something about attention to detail. 3.5 stars. Everything was good, just not quite to the great level. Like I told the bf, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Village Inn if someone was in the area. The food was solid, the service was well above average, and the place was cute (if a little loud once it became crowded). But nothing was crave-worthy or great. A bit loud too. I ordered the artichoke appetizer, and received the brie en croute. Since the brie was one of the things I was thinking of ordering, I didn't mention it. The brie was okay, but it was a simple dish that I've made at home in 30 seconds. The berry compote was good. The bf's parmesean polenta was good, but again, nothing special. The bolognese that came with it was really flavorful though, with lots of sausage-y depth. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly and was a great cut of meat. The dish as a whole, however, just lacked seasoning. It came with a nice madiera wine sauce, mashed potatoes with shitake mushrooms, and green beans. All good, nothing great. I felt the same way about the bf's chilean sea bass, although he was quite pleased with it. Our lava cake for dessert was also really good, although it came to us pre-erupted. The plates were all presented beautifully. Weird thing about the reservation. I called Saturday morning for a 6 pm reservation. The man on the phone said they had 5:30 or 8:30 open. No problem, I booked 5:30. At 5:30, we were one of two tables in the large dining room in which we were seated. At 6, there were still at least 10-15 empty tables. When we left around 7:30, there were still a few empty tables. Maybe they were staggering for the chefs, but it seemed extreme to me.
