This is my 6th or 7th visit since I discovered this place less than a month ago. A server immediately came to take my order as I sat down at a table. It turned out his mother-in-law and her husband own this restaurant and he had arrived from Portugal 3 hours earlier to visit family here. True to Portuguese tradition, he was as friendly, warm-hearted, and generous as I remember most folks I met in Portugal and 40 mins later we were still chatting about Portugal and exchanged anecdotes about our experiences both there and here. After a delicious meal of Singha beer, friend sole surrounded by exquisite fresh vegetables, and Panang curry with sticky rice, I left with a gift of one of the only two bottles of Super Bock beer that João had brought over from Portugal (and is not imported to the U.S.) - this is a sampling of what a delightful family this is. During these times we were unable to go out since curfew started. So we decided to look for a Thai place and I'm very familiar with a lot of Thai food. And I was so excited to get this for my daughter because what can go wrong with fried rice and simple fried chicken which is always boneless. And sadly to say they didn't make an effort because the fried chicken was just pitch black. I didn't know if that's how they like to present it but once we tried it out..... It is Oakland - There are many other better options. Ordering experience: 1. Made my order over the phone and was told food will be ready in ten minutes and be there by then. 2. Even though he takes credit card, the owner of a one man shop insisted I pay in cash once he saw a few bills in my wallet. I said I need the cash and he kept insisting I give him some cash and pay some on my card - LOL - I called in the order to support local biz by not using the menu app. 3. Right after signing the reciept, he says, okay, give me 10 minutes to cook your food. Ha - so I guess he didn't trust my phone order which he got wrong and over charged me for anyways. And I think their hours may be different -- I was able to go during the afternoon on Monday. So, I ordered 2 curries through Doordash by accident (I didn't verify the order until last minute that it was incorrect and wanted a seafood salad). I called the Dasher to get my order situated or if there was any way to change or add it. Doordash customer service contacted me about 10 minutes later telling me they're not able to remove the other curry item and that I would have to pay an extra $10 for the added seafood salad. I said it was fine and it is okay to pay an extra $10 to the overall order (which should have totaled out to about $30-35). Two hours go by as I wait for my meal and I end up receiving [still] the two curries WITHOUT the calamari salad. I would think with that much time and going through all the phone calls and corrections, my order would be correct-- but it wasn't. My cousin and I were the only ones there for lunch on a Saturday; where was everyone? I hope Vulcan sticks around because they have some good eats! I placed an order though GrubHub for a lunch delivery. My order came missing 2 curries, 1 noodle dish, 6 ordered of rice and an appetizer. I called the cafe back and tried to tell them what happened, but the women who was working the phone didn't speak great English (which is totally fine, her English is better than my Thai). I attempted to tell her a couple of times what happened and instead of her being patient and trying to understand what I was saying (you know, as a paying customer), she HUNG UP ON ME! That is so rude! I wasn't yelling or cussing, literally nothing to make her hang up on me about, other than the fact she didn't understand what I was saying and didn't want to talk to me anymore. Though the location is not ideal and very well hidden, I must say it will all be worth it. Everything I had was just so amazing! The Thai Milk Tea: SUPERB & AUTHENTIC! I have never had anything as good as it. The Pad Thai was just amazing! And the portioning would never be a problem for every meal, they give generous portions which is very rare now. It was the first time I tasted papaya salad too and it was so good! The pumpkin curry was amazingly different. I know it's unusual but hey it's one of the most recommended by authentic Thai diners. I think the 5-star reviews are fake. It's almost as if they are DELIBERATELY making bad food here. My old standby Vulcan has sadly changed hands and the new chef (well, I don't know how new since it's been a couple of years since I ate here) are not anywhere near as good the others. I ordered Koong Tod, crispy corn cakes, yellow curry, Thai tea and steamed rice. First, my food was cold, even though I picked up within 10 mins of ordering. My Koong tod was all egg roll wrapper and the shrimp inside was half the circumference of a pencil. Not at all like the light, crispy, meaty Koong tod from the old Vulcan. All I could taste was thought, soggy egg roll wrapper. The "tangy" dipping sauce was just sugar water with green bits floating in it. I took a sip of my tea and almost vomited. It tasted like they made the tea from toilet water -- a seriously fishy/algae aftertaste. I immediately dumped it out. The crispy corn cakes were also cold and not crispy at all. They were ok flavor-wise and I could tell they'd be good if they were actually fresh. The yellow curry was super watery and they gave me tofu instead of the chicken that I ordered. It had cabbage and cucumbers in it which are odd choices for curry that normally comes with carrots, onion and potatoes. There was one sad, grainy potato chunk in it. Even the steamed rice had a slight sewer smell. I threw everything out, not wanting to risk getting sick. I'm never coming back. Worst $40 i ever spent. The street leading up is a dead end by some artists studios and warehouses so the parking situation isn't the best but luckily there is street parking. The shrubbery was hiding the entry sign so for a couple of seconds I looked lost trying to find the place. I arrived and found a group of four friends eating inside. After a couple minutes of waiting, i ordered my food to go. The prices at this place are pretty good for a Thai place. There are many entree dishes under $10. The older woman behind the counter, I assume was the owner, was so sweet to me as I waited. She even offered me some free rice from their happy hour (free serving between 11a-1:30p) which was perfect for my salmon in panang curry. I also ordered basil friend rice (it's a tad spicy but I loved it) pad thai and an order of satay chicken. Everything was declicious and spent about $40 on all the dishes, not including tip which I added on electronically. This is a cute place for lunch or intimate date in a super casual setting.
