This restaurant is kinda dicey and way out of my comfort zone, but I tried it anyway. It's basically a lunch counter. There's only like 3 booths and the counter, on the other side of which you can see them cooking up your food. Come in, seat yourself, order your food, shut up and eat it. It's really that simple. I sat at a booth so I couldn't see my food being cooked. I doubt I would have eaten it if I did. The husband and I both ordered the halibut plate. It didn't look like that much food, but we both got fairly full quickly. I barely finished half my food. The fish was a tad over cooked but really good nonetheless. They don't fuss with too many flavors there. Just appreciate the fish. The plate is served with a healthy helping of fries and coleslaw piled high. The fries were perfect! So good. The coleslaw was a congealed yet runny form of overdressed cabbage and carrot. I wouldn't suggest it to the faint of heart. My husband said it was like eating a bag of vinegar covered, overdressed shredded lettuce that was past it's prime. Next time I'll just get double fries. Yea, yea! I'm going back! I'm proud of me too. If you haven't tried white spot there's really nothing to lose. Literally. It's not cheap, but its affordable and it's good. Be sure to have a root beer float too. Had lunch here today. Their halibut sandwich is the best I've ever had! The filet was larger than the bun and about one inch thick... cooked to absolute perfection! Their coleslaw on the other hand leaves a bit to be desired. They make it with cayenne (I think); the sauce for the slaw is orange in color and it's spicy. It's edible (just not my favorite). Maybe skip the slaw and order the fries instead. With breakfast, a burger, or the halibut, you definitely can't go wrong at this place. I got the breakfast sandwich which is basically bacon, eggs and cheese in bread. It was exactly that, nothing more, nothing less. My wife got the veggie omelette. It was just ok. I haven't been to the White Spot since the day I signed the papers for induction into the Navy. ( the recruiters used to be right next door) That was back in 1971. I've been gone for a long, long time, but some things never really change. The food was good then. It's every bit as good now. Maybe a touch better! I stopped in this morning for breakfast. The new owners were both friendly and helpful. I ordered a hamburger patty with eggs, potatoes and toast. They cooked it exactly the way I requested, and had it on the table quickly. I was very satisfied with the food, the service, and the cleanliness. The coffee was strong and flavorful, a rival to Starbucks own. Over all, this local cafe is back on my list and will remain there. I will return, again and again. (Hint; try their halibut sandwich. I hear it's to die for!). read more

White Spot Café is the little local place that you want to eat at. Nothing fancy about this place, no big neon sign, because they don't need it. The food speaks for itself, located a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of downtown we stopped in for breakfast one morning. We apparently overwhelmed them by taking up all the seating in their establishment, which wasn't hard to do considering there was only enough seating for about 30. Nevertheless the two employees handle our large group very well getting all our drinks out, and taking all our orders rather quickly. The food was simple but very flavorful, and cooked to order. The portions were generous and were presented well. Breakfast is served till I believe 11am then they switch to the lunch menu. We attempted to try lunch on another day, but did not make it before they closed shop. I recommend trying the White Spot Café if you're in downtown Anchorage, and please bring cash, no cards accepted. Though they have an ATM in the back if you need it. read more

A small diner with a basic ambiance that serves standard breakfast can totally hit the spot! When we walked into this diner, I had no big expectations at all. The menu was quite standard - nothing really fancy. We ordered a plate of omelette with potatoes on the side. They neatly split into two plates for myself and for my husband - such a nice touch. I've been coming here for over 20 years - through three different owners, maybe I've been here 500-600 times, mostly the last 5 years. It's better than ever - the new owners have upped the game tremendously. The quality of the food is terrific, and the service is a THOUSAND times better. I have always enjoyed this place! I give it a five star because they are a old style diner not trying to be anything else, well, because they don't have to!! They have old school decor with all the first photos and the place back from 1959. I sometimes really appreciate the the diner feel, hole in the wall with the best food!! I had the halibut sandwich with fries! Omg spot on! Extremely fresh halibut, perfect crisp of veggies, and buns are to die for, yet so simple! My hubby had the bacon cheeseburger, obviously one of the best! Oh and a plus!!! They extended their space and they also have beer and wine now! My husband and I came here twice while in Anchorage. The first time we stopped in they had just finished serving breakfast but graciously agreed to serve us breakfast anyway. My husband had eggs, bacon and reindeer sausage and really enjoyed it. I had a ham and cheese omelette, which was loaded with ham and cheese and was quite tasty. Their hash browns are good as well. Simple homemade grub. Actually made, not taken out of a box and fried. I had the chicken fried steak and it was made from an actual steak, battered and then fried. home fries are cut and cooked right there. No choice about bread, wheat or nothing. Don't bother asking for menu tweaks, they tell you that right on the menu. If you want food like it's cooked at home.... by somebody that can cook, then this is the place. The waitress that took our order and served us was very polite and kept the coffee and water coming without being obtrusive. The only negative I had was that the plate had a narrow center so that if you cut or pressed food near the edges the plate tipped up. The staff here are very ignorant of their customer service toward people other than caucasiens. Just seen group of educated family of 5 leave the cafe even though they came in early and were "visible" and sat on a table where the waitresses can see. Unfortunately, the other party of 4 that came in like 1/2 hour later and were immediately served because of their "white looking privilege" customers (according to one of their waitresses). This is a must eat at place whenever we're in Anchorage. It's a local hole in the wall, greasy spoon with the BEST halibut sandwiches ever. The breeding is light and crispy and the fish is so fresh and flaky. Then add the homemade fries and coleslaw. Oh I'm already missing this place. It was so busy when we were there, the place was packed. There was only one person waiting tables and she did awesome. Kept our drinks full, checked on us and even took the time to find me a t-shirt that I just had to have. The halibut sandwich was about $15 and fish and chips are $18. If you check around you realize that's not a bad price for Anchorage. It's within walking distance to many of the hotels. Just a little bit away from downtown. I couldn't give them a 5-star rating because the seats are very worn and the place needs a facelift. read more
