This restaurant brings respect to the world of museum restaurants. Usually overpriced and pretentious, museum restaurants are neither noted for their cuisine or their service. The Wright, located in the landmarked, Frank Lloyd Wright designed Guggenheim Museum, changes all that. It's a unique little gem, replete with exciting menu items, a subtle and tastefully-designed space, and a staff that makes one feel cossetted, safe and very, very, special. There's a lovely ambiance in this small space. A recent lunch consisted of the marvelous Hallloumi Tacos and homemade Cavatelli. The Halloumi Tacos are sublime and absolutely delicious. They are seasonal and not available year-round. Although the cavatelli was well made, the sauce it found itself in was overly salted and less than special, a small misfire for this diner. Desserts are extensive and equally delicious. So is the coffee. But what must be noted is that as good as the food is, the restaurant staff is special. A shame it is on my recent lunch visit to have such wonderful art installations by Sarah Crowner be a part of this dead space. Again ... what happened? Right on time my friends and I were for our 12:45pm reservation. Surprisingly empty was the room. Not much of a reception stand with scattered papers and two obnoxious blue bathroom keys. Whaaat? Still we stood waiting with no server in sight. Finally a head popped up from the bar and motioned us to come on in and sit anywhere. Another few minutes before a server showed up with menus. Not good. Making the most of it, we ordered. I must admit that the saving grace to this whole experience was my Colorful and Delicious Chicken Chopped Salad and my Beautiful and Scrumptious Key Lime Tart. Simply the best meal I had in New York. We came in on a whim, as the snack store at the Guggenheim was mobbed. We took a chance, since it was close to 1:30. They had 1 open table, and we were thrilled. Until of course my boys (& hubby) looked at the menu... they were borderline horrified. No burger here boys, and hubby, prepare to spend a bunch of $$$. The bread basket offering was some of the best ever. Hot, crispy assorted & begging for gobs of the salted butter. We obliged. - The poached chicken - my 16 year old & hubby declared this one of the best meals ever eaten. Smooth & velvety with a fresh pea sauce that was fresh as a garden. - The halibut - my other son devoured. It was light as a feather in a delicate citrus. Every bite was scarfed up. - My lobster salad was beautiful and fresh. The lobster was poached, and there were cool little cubes of apple "jello" mixed in with my salad. WOW!! The atmosphere was elegant & a total extension of the museum. If I didn't know better, I'd assume Mr. FLW was the general manager it was that spot-on. Very disappointed. Arrived for a late lunch, about 3 pm on a Friday. Menu sounded good. Found it Bizarre that you have "fine" dining if you sit in a booth and cafe food served on paper plates if you sit at one of the bars. The design of the restaurant is part of why I wanted to eat there and it was pretty nice. Our waiter was very nice and friendly although never refilled our water or tea. The food... Salmon over kale was excellent. Kale and cauliflower salad was good. The burger on a brioche bun arrived on an English muffin!?!? Completely killed it for me. The salad that came with it was so salty I could not eat it. And by salty I mean it was twice as salty as the potato chips that also came with it. A few peeves that should be addressed. Every time a patron flushes the toilet of dries their hands in the restrooms down the hall , you hear it. The kitchen closed while we were dining and we were offered desert about 3/4 of the way through our meal, which was appreciated. The individual behind the bar counting out the cash drawer, clanking every coin in it was unacceptable. The look is there the menu sounds good. Meals are well prepared, use a lot of different ingredients that complement each other. Service is attentive. Great recommendations for wine from the bartender and hostess. I The seared diver scallop was the only thing I didn't care much for; fishy taste, didn't seem fresh at all. Maybe that was just one time. The pink snapper was very refreshing. It was a new item on the menu, and I was glad to have chosen it! II Wild striped bass was immersed in a coconut broth; it was good but not amazing. Same goes for the salmon. The duck was juicy and fatty, which I really appreciate. And of course, you can't go wrong with the lobster. Desserts Mango Mousse definitely is a good choice, very powerful and the sorbet really draws out its flavor. Dark Chocolate Mousse is for dark chocolate lovers (duh), really intense. Pretty good, didn't blow me over. The eggplant, red pepper and goat cheese terrine was pretty, and the chicken schnitzel was tasty, but I'm not sure the prices are justified. I suppose it's what the market will bear - The Wright (or is it "The The Wright"?) is attached to the almighty Guggenheim, the Mecca to hipsters worldwide. We shared a really lovely autumn salad with slices of kumquat and goat cheese. and a beef/mushroom burger with fingerling potatoes, then shared a very small portion of chocolate cake with chocolate mint gelato. What a beautiful tourist trap. When I say beautiful, I mean the overall design, the lighting, the layout, and the use of colors and materials are gorgeous. And when I say tourist trap, I mean everything costs twice as much as it should, and the service is what I like to call "faux fine dining." The food is fine, but not $20 omelet fine. And if I pay $20 for an omelet, I expect to have my coffee refilled, my water refilled, and maybe a "How is everything?" from my waiter. No such luck. The restaurant is cozy, colorful and very appealing. I ordered the Diver Scallop Carpaccio. I did not like this at all. It was pretty fishy and I just couldn't bring myself to eat much of it. My Bf ordered the salad and the mushroom vinaigrette was great. The pink snapper tartare was good compared to the scallops but not amazing. I absolutely loved the Long Island Duck, perfectly cooked with crispy skin and a good amount of fat. I didn't really care for the truffle honey glaze but the brussel sprouts really went well with the duck as a contrast of flavor and the duck jus. The Maine lobster was great too. The salmon was a little dry and the striped bass in coconut broth was ok. The chocolate souffle was really rich but the lychee complemented it so well. Definitely my favorite of the night. Simple, fresh dishes, bright, modern decor and a typical UES crowd resulted in a surprisingly enjoyable experience. I started with the scallop and shrimp with sea urchin sauce while the girlfriend had the tuna sashimi with lime honey mustard pickled red onions and asian pear. The scallop was surprisingly sweet and delicious and while the shrimp was a little undercooked, it still tasted good and was definitely better than the usual overcooked shrimp. For mains, I had the halibut with potato-chive sauce and the girlfriend had the split pea risotto. The fish was cooked perfectly and seasoned well (despite a little too much white pepper on one part of the huge piece of fish) and the potato-chive sauce was a revelation. It really took me by surprise. The risotto was equally delicious. When spending $60 per person for lunch to eat at a restaurant like this you have certain expectations. Among those are that you will get the food that you order and fairly good service. If you are eating at Burger King you don't expect a high quality meal and an attentive waitstaff. Conversely when dining at an establishment like "The Wright" you do expect them. This review isn't to say that this was the worst food I have ever eaten but rather it is some of the worst food that I have ever paid $60 a person for lunch for. One of the very main issues is that they didn't serve the food that was advertised. My wife ordered the pasta of the day which was supposed to have muscles and shrimp in it. The muscles were easily identified but when we pointed out to the waiter that there was no shrimp in the dish he responded that there is shrimp it is just to small to see. Unless they are serving sea monkeys I believe that most shrimp are visible to the naked eye and if the shrimp truly are to small so see I would think maybe that should have been made clear at the time of ordering. I ordered Rosemary Roasted Chicken with Mashed Potatoes. I did get some chicken but it did not taste the slightest bit of rosemary and it came with this strange brown gravy that while OK, it was not what I was expecting. Also the only Mashed Potatoes on a plate the size of a 14" pizza was about a tablespoon full used as a glue to hold the chicken to the plate. There was also a side of carrots that were served severely overcooked and cold. It had the consistency of a Del Monte canned carrot just poured straight onto the plate at room temperature. Again not the worst food I have ever eaten but a REALLY poor value for the price. We finished with an Apple Crumble and a dollop of gelato. This was one of the most unremarkable deserts I have ever eaten. The Gelato was served too warm and was mostly melted by the time the plate arrived at the table and the apple crumble was fiarly cold at room temperature. The apple crumble I had expected would have some notes of a nice brown sugar and apple, but was in fact a very bland desert with almost no taste. It was like eating a hockey puck of cardboard. The Gelato taste was excellent but there was barely more than a teaspoon full of it on the plate and it was mostly melted. I spoke to the waiter and gave him my grievances, and he pretended to no longer speak English and basically blew off the complaints. Because we ate most of the food I paid for the meal, but I also spoke to the Manger and let her know that they had done and extremely poor job in the quality of food and the service. My advice to you is to avoid this restaurant unless they lower their prices to a Burger King level, because that it the quality of food and service that this establishment provides. read more

I really want to describe this place as a "hole in the wall" but that would just conjure up images of a dive bar found in a back alley. Not quite something you'd say about a museum restaurant (which is exactly how it is labeled on the street entrance "Museum Restaurant"). I entered from the museum entrance so I got to walk through the lobby of the Guggenheim. If no one pointed out that the restaurant was there, I wouldn't have found it. If I used the street entrance/exit, it would've taken me a little longer than if i was looking for any other restaurant. Basically, it's not obvious that a restaurant is there unless you are looking for it. Now about the food... Besides complimentary bread, they also provided an amuse-bouche (bite size morsel, the appetizer to the appetizer) and after the entree, a palette cleanser. The amuse-bouche was a shrimp poached and laid on top of a soy sauce reduction. Shrimp was cooked perfectly except I found the sauce overly salted. I ordered off the prix-fixe menu which wad $45 for an appetizer (mixed greens or gaspacho) , entree (the sirloin, lobster, or another choice which i don't remember because i was debating between surf or turf), and dessert (mango mousse or chocolate tart w/ sour raspberries). I chose (drum roll) the gaspacho with the sirloin (turf won), and the mango mousse (because it came with a margarita sorbet and a great way to kick off a Saturday night). The gazpacho was delicious. It was literally a red tomato gazpacho swirled (I repeat, SWIRLED!) with a yellow tomato gazpacho, with a chunk of tomato in the center and topped off with a gazpacho sorbet. Needless to say, if you are not a fan of tomatos/chilled soups, then don't order this. But it is a perfect summer soup for me. I was so close to licking the plate clean but I was in public. My sirloin was cooked medium rare and it was tender. However the sauce was overly salted (like the amuse bouche). My appetizer really set the bar too high for the entree to jump over. The palette cleanser was a lychee sorbet with some sweet orange juice and slices of sweet orange. It was very good. Light and delicate. It did it's job. My dessert was closer to the appetizer bar than the entree bar. It was served with small bits of mango so that was a bonus. I finished it and I really shouldn't have because my waistline has been under attack and I do need to practice some self control but that's an issue for the blogs, not a restaurant review. Overall it was an enjoyable meal. Not quite memorable (besides the gazpacho) and the atmosphere was bland. The decor was great (it is in the Guggenheim after all) but it was pretty quiet and not many people, esp on a Saturday night. The service was good. They were very attentive and knew everything on the menu by heart and recommended me a great white wine (I know. white wine with sirloin?! to be fair, i don't like the taste of red wine...i only drink white and i also didn't drink my wine during the entree. just the appetizer and dessert so don't judge me too harshly). **FOR THE RECORD: I made the reservation via VillageVines.com so I got a 30% discount off the entire bill, alcoholic beverage INCLUDED, so the pricing was reasonable for me.** read more

This place is awesome!! My sister, mother and I stopped by after spending the afternoon in the Guggenheim, without expecting much. I ordered the steak tartare with the quail egg. OMG, the best steak tartare I have ever had. It was sumptuous and fresh-my mouth waters just thinking about it. My mother got some risotto dish (forget what the flavoring was) which was heavenly as well. The atmosphere was cool too. So I was disappointed when I returned to find an almost empty restaurant, and that my fish was undercooked and had to be sent back. And that when I ate the fish, asparagus, ramps dish I was overwhelmed by too much added salt...and the menu doesn't mention that the ramps are pickled ramps. Moreover, the bartender was missing from the bar and the waiter ended up making my cocktail which ended up acceptable but not as good as it was during previous visits. Came here for a lunch with some girls. I always love the Guggenheim but didn't even go into the museum this time, and never had dined in the restaurant before. The restaurant was quiet with only a couple other tables occupied. The menu had a nice selection but since I had a few too many the night before I opted for the burger. We started with chips and guac for the table. It was good, but not the best I have ever had. The burger and fries were good, not great. One of my friends had the carrot soup, which looked amazing. The service was just ok. I would come back for lunch with ladies, but only if I were in the area. Lovely little restaurant within the Guggenheim with great food and contemporary decor! My other half had a artfully designed square block of rib meat on top of polenta and I had my diet fare of asparagus with pistachios and a side of brussel sprouts. Everything was really delicious and beautifully presented. Enter a basically triangular space, on the smallish side, in primarily white (floors and tables) with punches of color in slats on the walls, over the porthole windows. There is a sleek bar which occupies just under a third of the space with banquettes on an ell, with a communal high-top table with pride-of-place in the center. There is also a lovely surfboard shaped table for 8, with half the seating in chairs, the other in a curved banquette mirroring the shape of the table. The seating is perfectly designed for parties of any size to be comfortable. A pleasant looking space, but even with hard surfaces and conversations everywhere, the noise level is low. This is rare, and a great thing, since so many people meet friends for lunch at museums, and they can catch up with each other, enjoying their own conversation. The staff is immediately present, friendly and engaged, and remained so. Their is an a la carte menu, as well as a Prix Fixe. I chose a carpaccio starter, followed by risotto with lobster and fresh peas. The carpaccio was bright with micro greens, pana gradano and citrus segments. The risotto was perfectly cooked, with a well developed broth, in a heated bowl, staying warm until the last delicious bite. Iced forte' tea was brewed at the table, by a friendly and attentive server. I definitely will return and recommend it for ambiance and service, as well as the food which is obviously created per the season and market availability. There is an outside entrance but it's locked with no sign as to why, so you have to go through the main entrance of the museum to get in. I had a baby beat salad with citrus Pistacios and greens, Steak and potatoes augratin, crazy chocolate desert thing. though I was disappointed having nearly raw meat when I requested medium, could happen anywhere. Ok, so after an afternoon at the Guggenheim, we looking for an easy bite. The Wright is in the museum and fit nicely. We had the 50/50 burger. It was AMAZING!! The butter-squash soup was also very good. Service was excellent and they were very accommodating with any request. If there is one complaint it would be about the portion size and the prices.
